A type of ZrO(2)center dot nH(2)O Was synthesized and its Cr(VI) removal potential was investigated in this study. The kinetic study, adsorption isotherm, pH effect, thermodynamic study and desorption were examined in batch experiments. The kinetic process was described by a pseudo-second-order rate model very well. The Cr(VI) adsorption tended to increase with a decrease of pH. The adsorption data fitted well to the Langmuir model. The adsorption capacity increased from 61 to 66 mg g(-1) when the temperature was increased from 298 to 338 K. The positive values of both Delta H degrees and Delta S degrees suggest an endothermic reaction and increase in randomness at the solid-liquid interface during the adsorption. Delta G degrees values obtained were negative indicating a spontaneous adsorption process. The effective desorption of Cr(VI) on ZrO(2)center dot nH(2)O could be achieved using distilled water at pH 12. (C) 2009 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

L-2-hydroxyglutaric aciduria (L-2-HGA, MIM 236792) is a neurometabolic disorder caused by the toxic accumulation of high concentration of L-2-hydroxyglutaric acid in plasma and cerebrospinal fluid. Distinct mutations on the L2HGDH gene have been associated with the clinical and biochemical phenotype. Here we present three novel mutations (Gln197X, Gly211Val and c.540+1 G>A), which increase the present deleterious collection of L2HGDH gene up to 35 mutations that we have compiled in this study. In addition, we used the haplotypic information based on polymorphic markers to demonstrate the common origin of Gly57Arg harboring chromosomes. OBJECTIVE To evaluate the correlation between ultrasound-estimated bladder weight (UEBW) in patients with different degrees of bladder outlet obstruction (BOO). METHODS We evaluated 50 consecutive non-neurogenic male patients with lower urinary tract symptoms (LUTS) referred to urodynamic study (UDS). All patients self-answered the International Prostate Score Symptoms (IPSS) questionnaire. After the UDS, the bladder was filled with 150 mL to determine UEBW. Patients with a bladder capacity under 150 mL, a previous history of prostate surgery or pelvic irradiation, an IPSS score <8, a bladder stone or urinary tract infection were excluded. After a pressure-flow study, the Schafer linear passive urethral resistance relation nomogram was plotted to determine the grade of obstruction: Grades I-II/VI were defined as mild obstruction, Grades III-IV/VI as moderate obstruction, and Grades V-VI/VI as severe obstruction. RESULTS The UEBW was 51.7 +/- 26.9, 54.1 +/- 30.0 and 54.8 +/- 28.2 in patients with mild, moderate and severe BOO, respectively (P = 0.130). The UEBW allowed us to define four groups: (i) UEBW < 35 g; (ii) 35 g <= UEBW < 50 g; (iii) 50 g <= UEBW < 70 g; and (4) UEBW >= 70 g. We did not find any differences in age, prostate weight, IPSS, PVR, cystometric bladder capacity, presence of detrusor overactive and degree of obstruction in the aforementioned groups. CONCLUSION Despite the fact that some studies have emphasized the value of UEBW as an efficient non-invasive method for evaluating lower urinary tract obstruction, our study suggests that UEBW does not present any individual correlation with LUTS or objective measurements of BOO.

In the kallikrein-kinin and renin-angiotensin systems the main receptors, B-1 and B-2 (kinin receptors) and AT(1) and AT(2) (angiotensin receptors) respectively, are seven-transmembrane domain G-protein-coupled receptors. Considering that the B, agonists Des-Arg(9)-BK (Arg-Pro-Pro-Gly-Phe-Ser-Pro-Phe), Lys-desArg(9)-BK or Des-Arg(10)-KD (Lys-Arg-Pro-Pro-Gly-Phe-Ser-Pro-Phe) and the AT, agonist (Asp-Arg-Val-Tyr-lle-His-Pro-Phe) have the same two residues at the C-terminal region (i.e. Pro-Phe), we hypothesized that TM V and TM VI of the B-1 receptor could play an essential role in agonist binding and activity, being these regions receptor sites for binding the C-terminal sequences of Des-Arg-kinins similarly to that observed to AT, receptor. To investigate this hypothesis, we replaced Arg(212) for Ala at the top of the TM V and the sequence 274-282 (CPYHFFAFL) in TM VI of the rat kinin B, receptor by the 32 receptor homologous sequence, 289-297 (FPFQISTFL) and subsequently analyzed the consequences of these mutations by competition binding and functional assays. Despite correct expression, observed at the mRNA and protein level by RT-PCR and confocal microscopy, respectively, no agonist binding and function was verified for the mutated receptors. Therefore, our results suggest an important role for Arg(212) in the TM V and a region of TM VI of rat B, receptor in the interaction with the C-terminal residues of Des-Arg-kinins, similar to that observed with AngII. BACKGROUND Long-term ethanol intake has been reported to evoke both hypertension and increase of systemic vasopressin levels in rats. METHODS In this work, we investigated the involvement of systemic vasopressin in the hypertension evoked in rats by long-term ethanol (20% vol/vol) intake for 2 weeks, by systemic treatment with the VI-vasopressin receptor antagonist dTyr(CH2)5(Me)AVP (50 mu g/kg). Moreover, plasma arginine-vasopressin (AVP) content was quantified using an AVP radioimmunoassay and the expression of vasopressin mRNA in the supraoptic (SON) and paraventricular (PVN) nuclei was measured using real-time PCR. RESULTS Mild hypertension was observed after 2 weeks of ethanol treatment when compared with control animals. Moreover, an increase in both the expression of vasopressin mRNA and the vasopressin blood content was observed in ethanol-treated rats in comparison to the OF control group. Basal blood pressure levels of ethanol-treated animals were significantly reduced by IV treatment with the V1-vasopressin receptor antagonist dTyr(CH2)5(Me)AVR However, dTyr(CH2)5(Me) AVP had no effect on the blood pressure of control animals. CONCLUSIONS The results indicate that mild hypertension is already observed at an early phase of ethanol consumption in rats. Because the content of circulating vasopressin was increased in ethanol-treated rats and their basal blood pressure returned to control levels after IV treatment with a VI-vasopressin receptor antagonist, it is proposed that increased circulating vasopressin content may mediate the hypertension observed in ethanol-treated rats.

The batch removal of hexavalent chromium (Cr(Vl)) from wastewater under different experimental conditions using economic adsorbents was investigated in this study. These adsorbents were produced from the pyrolysis and activation of the waste tyres (TAC) and from the pyrolysis of sawdust (SPC). The performance of these adsorbents against commercial activated carbon F400 (CAC) has also been carried out. The removal was favoured at low pH, with maximum removal at pH = 2 for all types of carbon. The effects of concentration, temperature and particle size have been reported. All sorbents were found to efficiently remove Cr(VI) from solution. The batch sorption kinetics have been tested for a first-order reversible reaction, a first-order and second-order reaction. The rate constants of adsorption for all these kinetic models have been calculated. The applicability of the Langmuir isotherm for the present system has been tested at different temperatures. The thermodynamic parameters (AGO, K,) obtained indicate the endothermic nature of Cr(Vl) adsorption on TAC, SPC and CAC. (C) 2001 Elsevier Science B.V. All rights reserved.
