Horse ferricytochrome c (cyt c) undergoes exchange of one of its axial heme ligands (Met-80) for one or more non-native ligands under denaturing conditions. We have used 1H NMR spectroscopy to detect two conformations of paramagnetic cyt c with non-native heme ligation through a range of urea concentrations. One non-native form is an equilibrium unfolding intermediate observed under partially denaturing conditions and is attributed to replacement of Met-80 with one or more Lys side chains. The second non-native form, in which the native Met ligand is replaced by a His, is observed under strongly denaturing conditions. Thermodynamic analysis of these data indicates a relatively small ΔG (17 kJ/mol) for the transition from native to the Lys-ligated intermediate and a significantly larger ΔG (47 kJ/mol) for the transition from native to the His-ligated species. Although CD and fluorescence data indicate that the equilibrium unfolding of cyt c is a two-state process, these NMR results implicate an intermediate with His-Lys ligation.

In the beginning the surface of the Earth was extremely hot, because the Earth as we know it is the product of a collision between two planets, a collision that also created the Moon. Most of the heat within the very young Earth was lost quickly to space while the surface was still quite hot. As it cooled, the Earth's surface passed monotonically through every temperature regime between silicate vapor to liquid water and perhaps even to ice, eventually reaching an equilibrium with sunlight. Inevitably the surface passed through a time when the temperature was around 100°C at which modern thermophile organisms live. How long this warm epoch lasted depends on how long a thick greenhouse atmosphere can be maintained by heat flow from the Earth's interior, either directly as a supplement to insolation, or indirectly through its influence on the nascent carbonate cycle. In both cases, the duration of the warm epoch would have been controlled by processes within the Earth's interior where buffering by surface conditions played little part. A potentially evolutionarily significant warm period of between 105 and 107 years seems likely, which nonetheless was brief compared to the vast expanse of geological time.

The (vapor + liquid), (liquid + liquid) and (vapor + liquid + liquid) equilibria of the ternary system (water + 1-butanol + p-xylene) have been determined. (Water + 1-butanol + p-xylene) is a type 2 heterogeneous ternary system with partially miscible (water + 1-butanol) and (water + p-xylene) pairs. By contrast, (1-butanol + p-xylene) is totally miscible under atmospheric conditions. This paper examines the (vapor + liquid) equilibrium in both heterogeneous and homogeneous regions at 101.3 kPa of pressure. (Liquid + liquid) equilibrium data at T = 313.15 K have also been determined, and for comparison, the obtained experimental data have been calculated by means of several thermodynamic models: UNIQUAC, UNIFAC and NRTL. Some discrepancies were found between the (vapor + liquid + liquid) correlations; however, the models reproduced the (liquid + liquid) equilibrium data well. The obtained data reveal a ternary heterogeneous azeotrope with mole fraction composition: 0.686 water, 0.146 1-butanol and 0.168 p-xylene.

Context: There is evidence suggesting that the prevalence of disability in late life has declined over time while the prevalence of disabling chronic diseases has increased. The dynamic equilibrium of morbidity hypothesis suggests that these seemingly contradictory trends are due to the attenuation of the morbidity-disability link over time. The aim of this study was to empirically test this assumption.Methods: Data were drawn from three repeated cross-sections of SWEOLD, a population-based survey among the Swedish men and women ages 77 and older. Logistic regression models were fitted to assess the trends in the prevalence of Activities of Daily Living (ADL) disability, Instrumental ADL (IADL) disability, and selected groups of chronic conditions. The changes in the associations between chronic conditions and disabilities were examined in both multiplicative and additive models.Results: Between 1992 and 2011, the odds of ADL disability significantly declined among women whereas the odds of IADL disability significantly declined among men. During the same period, the prevalence of most chronic morbidities including multimorbidity went up. Significant attenuations of the morbidity-disability associations were found for cardiovascular diseases, metabolic disorders, poor lung function, psychological distress, and multimorbidity.Conclusion: In agreement with the dynamic equilibrium hypothesis, this study concludes that the associations between chronic conditions and disability among the Swedish older adults have largely waned over time.

Phase-equilibrium data and liquidus isotherms for the system MnO-CaO-(Al2O3 + SiO2) at silicomanganese alloy saturation have been determined in the temperature range of 1373 to 1723 K. The results are presented in the form of the pseudoternary sections MnO-CaO-(Al2O3 + SiO2) with Al2O3/SiO2 weight ratios of 0.55 and 0.65. The primary-phase fields have been identified in this range of conditions.

The phase equilibria in the Fe-Mg-Zn-O system in the temperature range 1100-1550degreesC in air have been experimentally studied using equilibration and quenching followed by electron probe X-ray microanalysis. The compositions of condensed phases in equilibrium in the binary MgO-ZnO system and the ternary Fe-Mg-O system have been reported at sub-solidus in air. Pseudo-ternary sections of the quaternary Fe-Mg-Zn-O system at 1100, 1250 and 1400degreesC in air were constructed using the experimental data. The solid solution of iron oxide, MgO and ZnO in the periclase (Mg, Zn, Fe)O, spinel (Mg2+, Fe2+, Zn2+)(x)Fe(2+y)3+O4 and zincite (Zn, Mg, Fe)O phases were found to be extensive under the conditions investigated. A continuous spinel solid solution is formed between the magnesioferrite (Mg2+, Fe2+)(x)Fe(2+y)3+O4 and franklinite (Zn2+, Fe2+)(x)Fe(2+y)3+O4 end-members at 1100 and 1250degreesC, extending to magnetite (Fe2+)(x)Fe(2+y)3+O4 at 1400degreesC in air. The compositions along the spinel boundaries were found to be non-stoichiometric, the magnitude of the non-stoichiometry being a function of composition and temperature in air. It was found that hematite dissolves neither MgO nor ZnO in air.

Adsorption of binary mixtures onto activated carbon Norit R1 for the system nitrogen-methane-carbon dioxide was investigated over the pressure range up to 15 MPa. A new model is proposed to describe the experimental data. It is based on the assumption that an activated carbon can be characterized by the distribution function of elements of adsorption volume (EAV) over the solid-fluid potential. This function may be evaluated from pure component isotherms using the equality of the chemical potentials in the adsorbed phase and in the bulk phase for each EAV. In the case of mixture adsorption a simple combining rule is proposed, which allows determining the adsorbed phase density and its composition in the EAV at given pressure and compositions of the bulk phase. The adsorbed concentration of each adsorbate is the integral of its density over the set of EAV. The comparison with experimental data on binary mixtures has shown that the approach works reasonably well. In the case of high-pressure binary mixture adsorption, when only total amount adsorbed was measured, the proposed model allows reliably determining partial amounts of the adsorbed components. The phase equilibria in the FeO-Fe2O3-ZnO system have been experimentally investigated at oxygen partial pressures between metallic iron saturation and air using a specially developed quenching technique, followed by electron probe X-ray microanalysis (EPMA) and then wet chemistry for determination of ferrous and ferric iron concentrations. Gas mixtures of H-2, N-2, and CO2 or CO and CO2 controlled the atmosphere in the furnace. The determined metal cation ratios in phases at equilibrium were used for the construction of the 1200 degrees C isothermal section of the Fe-Zn-O system. The univariant equilibria between the gas phase, spinel, wustite, and zincite was found to be close to pO(2) = 1 center dot 10(-8) atm at 1200 degrees C. The ferric and ferrous iron concentrations in zincite and spinel at equilibrium were also determined at temperatures from 1200 degrees C to 1400 degrees C at pO(2) = 1 center dot 10(-6) atm and at 1200 degrees C at pO(2) values ranging from 1 center dot 10(-4) to 1 center dot 10(-8) atm. Implications of the phase equilibria in the Fe-Zn-O system for the formation of the platelike zincite, especially important for the Imperial Smelting Process (ISP), are discussed.

Zincite and spinel phases are present in the complex slag systems encountered in zinc/lead sintering and zinc smelting processes. These phases form extensive solid solutions and are stable over a wide range of compositions, temperatures and oxygen partial pressures. Accurate information on the stability of these phases is required in order to develop thermodynamic models of these slag systems. Phase equilibria in the Fe–Zn–O system have been experimentally studied for a range of conditions, between 900°C and 1580°C and oxygen partial pressures (pO2) between air and metallic iron saturation, using equilibration and quenching techniques. The compositions of the phases were measured using Electron probe X-ray microanalysis (EPMA). The ferrous and ferric bulk iron concentrations were determined using a specially developed wet-chemical analysis procedure based on the use of ammonium metavanadate. XRD was used to confirm phase identification. A procedure was developed to overcome the problems associated with evaporation of zinc at low pO2 values and to ensure the achievement of equilibria. An isothermal section of the system FeO–Fe2O3–ZnO at high ZnO concentrations at 1200°C was constructed. The maximum solubilities of iron and zinc in zincite and spinel phases in equilibrium were determined at pO2 = 1 × 10-6 atm at 1200°C and 1300°C. The morphology of the zincite crystals sharply changes in air between 1200–1300°C from rounded to plate-like. This is shown to be associated with significant increase in total iron concentration, the additional iron being principally in the form of ferric iron. Calculations performed by FactSage with a thermodynamically optimised database have been compared with the experimental results.

The effects of ammonium sulphate concentration on the osmotic second virial coefficient (B-AA/M-A) for equine serum albumin (pH 5.6, 20 degrees C) have been examined by sedimentation equilibrium. After an initial steep decrease with increasing ammonium sulphate concentration, B-AA/M-A assumes an essentially concentration-independent magnitude of 8-9 ml/g. Such behaviour conforms with the statistical-mechanical prediction that a sufficient increase in ionic strength should effectively eliminate the contributions of charge interactions to B-AA/M-A but have no effect on the covolume contribution (8.4 ml/g for serum albumin). A similar situation is shown to apply to published sedimentation equilibrium data for lysozyme (pH 4.5). Although termed osmotic second virial coefficients and designated as such (B-22), the negative values obtained in published light scattering studies of both systems have been described incorrectly because of the concomitant inclusion of the protein-salt contribution to thermodynamic nonideality of the protein. Those negative values are still valid predictors of conditions conducive to crystal growth inasmuch as they do reflect situations in which there is net attraction between protein molecules. However, the source of attraction responsible for the negative virial coefficient stems from the protein-salt rather than the protein-protein contribution, which is necessarily positive. We establish sufficient conditions for the upper semicontinuity and lower semicontinuity of the solution set mapping S : Lambda(1) x A(2) -> 2(X) for such parametric implicit vector equilibrium problems. Methods for understanding classical disordered spin systems with interactions conforming to some idealized graphical structure are well developed. The equilibrium properties of the Sherrington-Kirkpatrick model, which has a densely connected structure, have become well understood. Many features generalize to sparse Erdös- Rényi graph structures above the percolation threshold and to Bethe lattices when appropriate boundary conditions apply. In this paper, we consider spin states subject to a combination of sparse strong interactions with weak dense interactions, which we term a composite model. The equilibrium properties are examined through the replica method, with exact analysis of the high-temperature paramagnetic, spin-glass, and ferromagnetic phases by perturbative schemes. We present results of replica symmetric variational approximations, where perturbative approaches fail at lower temperature. Results demonstrate re-entrant behaviors from spin glass to ferromagnetic phases as temperature is lowered, including transitions from replica symmetry broken to replica symmetric phases. The nature of high-temperature transitions is found to be sensitive to the connectivity profile in the sparse subgraph, with regular connectivity a discontinuous transition from the paramagnetic to ferromagnetic phases is apparent.

Climate change has a great impact on the build and the work of natural ecosystems. Disappearance of some population or growth of the number in some species can be already caused by little change in temperature. A Theoretical Ecosystem Growth Model was investigated in order to examine the effects of various climate patterns on the ecological equilibrium. The answers of the ecosystems which are given to the climate change could be described by means of global climate modelling and dynamic vegetation models. The examination of the operation of the ecosystems is only possible in huge centres on supercomputers because of the number and the complexity of the calculation. The number of the calculation could be decreased to the level of a PC by considering the temperature and the reproduction during the modelling of a theoretical ecosystem and several important theoretical questions could be answered.

János Kornai’s DRSE theory (Kornai, 2014) follows the ex post model philosophy which radically rejects the ex ante set of conditions laid down by the dominant neoclassical school and the stringent limits of equilibrium, and defines its own premises for the functioning of capitalist economy. In other words, the DRSE theory represents an extremely novel trend among the various schools of economics. The theory is still only a verbal model with the following supporting pillars as the immanent features of the capitalist system: dynamism, rivalry and the surplus economy. (The English name of the theory uses the initial letters of the terms Dynamism, Rivalry, Surplus Economy). The dominance of the surplus economy, that is, oversupply is replaced by monopolistic competition, uncertainty over the volume of demand, Schumpeterian innovation, dynamism, technological progress, creative destruction and increasing return to scale with rivalry between producers and service providers for markets. This paper aims to examine whether the DRSE theory can be formulated as a formal mathematical model. We have chosen a special route to do this: first we explore the unreal ex ante assumptions of general equilibrium theory (Walras, 1874; Neumann, 1945), and then we establish some of the possible connections between the premises of DRSE, which include the crucial condition that just like in biological evolution, there is no fixed steady state in the evolutionary processes of market economy, not even as a point of reference. General equilibrium theory and DRSE theory are compared in the focus of Schumpeterian evolutionary economics.
