Cell-material interactions are crucial for cell adhesion and proliferation on biomaterial surfaces. Immobilization of biomolecules leads to the formation of biomimetic substrates, improving cell response. We introduced RGD (Arg-Gly-Asp) sequences on poly-ε-caprolactone (PCL) film surfaces using thiol chemistry to enhance Schwann cell (SC) response. XPS elemental analysis indicated an estimate of 2-3% peptide functionalization on the PCL surface, comparable with carbodiimide chemistry. Contact angle was not remarkably reduced; hence, cell response was only affected by chemical cues on the film surface. Adhesion and proliferation of Schwann cells were enhanced after PCL modification. Particularly, RGD immobilization increased cell attachment up to 40% after 6 h of culture. It was demonstrated that SC morphology changed from round to very elongated shape when surface modification was carried out, with an increase in the length of cellular processes up to 50% after 5 days of culture. Finally RGD immobilization triggered the formation of focal adhesion related to higher cell spreading. In summary, this study provides a method for immobilization of biomolecules on PCL films to be used in peripheral nerve repair, as demonstrated by the enhanced response of Schwann cells.

A highly sensitive nonenzymatic amperometric glucose sensor was fabricated by using Ni nanoparticles homogeneously dispersed within and on the top of a vertically aligned CNT forest (CNT/Ni nanocomposite sensor), which was directly grown on a Si/SiO2 substrate. The surface morphology and elemental analysis were characterized using scanning electron microscopy and energy dispersive spectroscopy, respectively. Cyclic voltammetry and chronoamperometry were used to evaluate the catalytic activities of CNT/Ni electrode. The CNT/Ni nanocomposite sensor exhibited a great enhancement of anodic peak current after adding 5 mM glucose in alkaline solution. The sensor can also be applied to the quantification of glucose content with a linear range covering from 5 μM to 7 mM, a high sensitivity of 1433 μA mM-1 cm-2, and a low detection limit of 2 μM. The CNT/Ni nanocomposite sensor exhibits good reproducibility and long-term stability, moreover, it was also relatively insensitive to commonly interfering species, such as uric acid, ascorbic acid, acetaminophen, sucrose and d-fructose. © 2013 Elsevier B.V.

The reaction between MgO and microsilica has been studied by many researchers, who confirmed the formation of magnesium silicate hydrate. The blend was reported to have the potential as a novel material for construction and environment purposes. However, the characteristics of MgO vary significantly, e.g., reactivity and purity, which would have an effect on the hydration process of MgO-silica blend. This paper investigated the strength and hydration products of reactive MgO and silica blend at room temperature up to 90 days. The existence of magnesium silicate hydrate after 7 days' curing was confirmed with the help of infrared spectroscopy, thermogravimetric analysis and X-ray diffraction. The microstructural and elemental analysis of the resulting magnesium silicate hydrate was conducted using scanning electron microscopy and energy dispersive spectroscopy. In addition, the effect of characteristics of MgO on the hydration process was discussed. It was found that the synthesis of magnesium silicate hydrate was highly dependent on the reactivity of the precursors. MgO and silica with higher reactivity resulted in higher formation rate of magnesium silicate hydrate. In addition, the impurity in the MgO affects the pH value of the blends, which in turn determines the solubility of silica and the formation of magnesium silicate hydrate. © 2014 Elsevier Ltd. A comprehensive study on physical and chemical properties of Mo/MCM-22 bifunctional catalysts has been made by using combined analytic and spectroscopic techniques, such as adsorption, elemental analysis, and Xe-129 and P-31 NMR of adsorbed trialkylphosphine oxide probe molecules. Samples prepared by the impregnation method with Mo loadings ranging from 2-10 wt.% have been examined and the results are compared with that obtained from samples prepared by mechanical mixing using MoO3 or Mo2C as agents. Sample calcination treatment is essential in achieving a well-dispersed metal species in Mo/MCM-22. It was found that, upon initial incorporation, the Mo species tend to inactivate both Bronsted and Lewis sites locate predominantly in the supercages rather than the 10-membered ring channels of MCM-22. However, as the Mo loading exceeds 6 wt.%, the excessive Mo species tend to migrate toward extracrystalline surfaces of the catalyst. A consistent decrease in concentrations of acid sites with increasing Mo loading < 6 wt.% was found, especially for those with higher acid strengths. Upon loading of Mo > 6 wt.%, further decreases in both Bronsted and Lewis acidities were observed. These results provide crucial supports for interpreting the peculiar behaviors previously observed during the conversion of methane to benzene over Mo/MCM-22 catalyst under non-oxidative conditions, in which an optimal performance was achieved with a Mo loading of 6 wt.%. The effects of Mo incorporation on porosity and acidity features of the catalyst are discussed. (C) 2004 Published by Elsevier B.V.

Silica-supported molybdenum surface complexes were prepared by the reaction between (N=) Mo(OtBu)(3) and silica via displacement of the tert-butoxy ligands for siloxyls from the silica surface. The structure of the surface molybdenum complexes was well defined by in-situ FT-IR, elemental analysis, H-1 NMR and C-13 CP/MAS NMR techniques. The surface complexes could undergo alcoholysis reaction with CD3OD and CH3OH in the same way as free (N =) Mo(OtBu)(3) and they show high catalytic activity and selectivity in olefin epoxidation. Initial rates up to 24.9 mmol epoxide (mmol Mo)(-1) min(-1) were achieved in the epoxidation of cyclohexene using TBHP as oxidant.

A simple preparation process of alkylamide phase for reversed-phase HPLC (RP-HPLC) is described. The process includes aminopropyltrimethoxysilane firstly reacted with octanoyl chloride, then the intermediate was coupled onto porous silica. The resultant bonded silica has a reproducible ligand surface concentration and homogenous bonded ligand distribution on the porous silica. Characterization of prepared packing was carried out with elemental analysis, solid-state C-13 NMR and Fourier transform infrared (FT-IR). Chromatographic evaluations were carried out by using a mixture of organic compounds including acidic, basic and neutral analytes under methanol/water as binary mobile phase. The results showed that the stationary phase have excellent chromatographic properties and can be efficiently used for the separation of basic compounds.

The novel (E,E)-dioxime, 5,6:17,18-dibenzo-11,12-(4-nitrobenzo)-2,3-bis(hydroxyimino)-7,16-dithia-10,13-dioxa-1,4-diazacyclooctadecane) (H2L), has been synthesized from reaction of (E,E)-dichloroglyoxime (1) with 2,3:14,15-dibenzo 8,9-(4-nitrobenzo)-4,13-dithia-7,10-dioxa-1,16-diazahegzadecane (2). The mononuclear Co(III) complex (4) of this dioxime was prepared by oxidation of the cobalt (II) complex. The -capped Co(III) complex (5) was synthesized by using a precursor Co(III) complex and boron trifluoride dietherate. The heterotrinuclear complexes (6) and (7) were prepared by reaction of (5) with NiCl2·6H2O and CdCl2·H2O, respectively. In addition, the homotrinuclear Cu(II) complex (8), has also been prepared by the reaction of this dioxime with CuCl2·H2O. The structures of the dioxime and its complexes were identified by using elemental analysis, 1H- and 13C-NMR, IR, and mass spectral data.
