The article presents a study of a CEFR B2-level reading subtest that is part of the Slovenian national secondary school leaving examination in English as a foreign language, and compares the test-taker actual performance (objective difficulty) with the test-taker and expert perceptions of item difficulty (subjective difficulty). The study also analyses the test-takers’ comments on item difficulty obtained from a while-reading questionnaire. The results are discussed in the framework of the existing research in the fields of (the assessment of) reading comprehension, and are addressed with regard to their implications for item-writing, FL teaching and curriculum development.

Contact dermatitis is a common inflammatory skin condition characterized by erythematous and pruritic skin lesions that occur after contact with a foreign substance. There are two forms of contact dermatitis: irritant and allergic. Irritant contact dermatitis is caused by the non–immune-modulated irritation of the skin by a substance, leading to skin changes. Allergic contact dermatitis is a delayed hypersensitivity reaction in which a foreign substance comes into contact with the skin; skin changes occur after reexposure to the substance. A medical condition referred to as “shoe dermatitis” is a form of contact dermatitis caused by the contact of the foot with parts of the shoe due to these materials. Shoe dermatitis is a diagnostic and therapeutic challenge and is a common type of contact dermatitis. It is imperative the foot and ankle physician become familiar with recognizing signs and symptoms of shoe dermatitis so that their patients can be accurately diagnosis and appropriately treated to avoid secondary infections and disability. This review will first present causative factors for the etiology of shoe contact dermatitis supported by clinical-based evidence as found in the medical literature. Secondly, a description of the signs and symptoms of shoe contact dermatitis will be presented in a narrative fashion. Finally, both treatment options and preventative measures to avoid shoe.

Land-use change and intensification threaten bee populations worldwide, imperilling pollination services. Global models are needed to better characterise, project, and mitigate bees' responses to these human impacts. The available data are, however, geographically and taxonomically unrepresentative; most data are from North America and Western Europe, overrepresenting bumblebees and raising concerns that model results may not be generalizable to other regions and taxa. To assess whether the geographic and taxonomic biases of data could undermine effectiveness of models for conservation policy, we have collated from the published literature a global dataset of bee diversity at sites facing land-use change and intensification, and assess whether bee responses to these pressures vary across 11 regions (Western, Northern, Eastern and Southern Europe; North, Central and South America; Australia and New Zealand; South East Asia; Middle and Southern Africa) and between bumblebees and other bees. Our analyses highlight strong regionally-based responses of total abundance, species richness and Simpson's diversity to land use, caused by variation in the sensitivity of species and potentially in the nature of threats. These results suggest that global extrapolation of models based on geographically and taxonomically restricted data may underestimate the true uncertainty, increasing the risk of ecological surprises.

Deux objectifs seront poursuivis par la présente recherche. Le premier sera de déterminer le niveau de conceptualisation du langage écrit des enfants de la maternelle. Sur la base de ces évaluations nous poursuivrons le second objectif, soit de déterminer si une intervention particulière peut influencer le développement des habiletés cognitives et métacognitives nécessaires à la compréhension de notre système d'écriture. Les résultats nous permettront de formuler des recommandations quant à l'attitude pédagogique à privilégier avant d'entreprendre l'enseignement formel pour faciliter d'emblée l'entrée dans l'écrit. Par le biais de cette recherche, nous tenterons de répondre à plusieurs interrogations. Lorsque l'enfant entre en première armée, quelles connaissances a-t-il du langage écrit et du fonctionnement de notre système d'écriture? Que peut faire l'enseignante ou l'enseignant de 1re année pour améliorer l'accès au code écrit de notre langue? Comment doit-elle, comment doit-il ajuster ses interventions sans nuire au travail intellectuel déjà entrepris par l'enfant? L'approche théorique d'Emilia Ferreiro ainsi que les travaux de Downing et Fijalkow serviront de fondement à notre étude. Grâce à l'épreuve d'écriture inventée qui a donné lieu à la psychogenèse de l'écriture élaborée par Ferreiro, nous pourrons analyser les productions écrites des enfants. Les protocoles ne seront pas mesurés en regard de la réussite ou de l'échec, mais selon le niveau atteint: «les réponses étant seulement la manifestation externe de mécanismes internes d'organisation» (Ferreiro, 1987, p. 16). L'épreuve du langage technique de la lecture-écriture issue de la théorie de la clarté cognitive élaborée par Downing et Fijalkow viendra compléter nos informations en permettant de situer le degré de clarté cognitive des enfants.

This study is concerned with the significance of Jungian and post-Jungian theory to the development of the contemporary Western Goddess Movement, which includes the various self-identified nature-based, Pagan, Goddess Feminism, Goddess Consciousness, Goddess Spirituality, Wicca, and Goddess-centred faith traditions that have seen a combined increase in Western adherents over the past five decades and share a common goal to claim Goddess as an active part of Western consciousness and faith traditions. The Western Goddess Movement has been strongly influenced by Jung’s thought, and by feminist revisions of Jungian Theory, sometimes interpreted idiosyncratically, but presented as a route to personal and spiritual transformation. The analysis examines ways in which women encounter Goddess through a process of Jungian Individuation and traces the development of Jungian and post-Jungian theories by identifying the key thinkers and central ideas that helped to shape the development of the Western Goddess Movement. It does so through a close reading and analysis of five biographical ‘rebirth’ memoirs published between 1981 and 1998: Christine Downing’s (1981) The Goddess: Mythological Images of the Feminine; Jean Shinoda Bolen’s (1994) Crossing to Avalon: A Woman’s Midlife Pilgrimage; Sue Monk Kidd’s (1996) The Dance of the Dissident Daughter: A Woman’s Journey from Christian Tradition to the Sacred Feminine; Margaret Starbird’s (1998) The Goddess in the Gospels: Reclaiming the Sacred Feminine; and Phyllis Curott’s (1998) Book of Shadows: A Modern Woman’s Journey into the Wisdom of Witchcraft and the Magic of the Goddess. These five memoirs reflect the diversity of the faith traditions in the Western Goddess Movement. The enquiry centres upon two parallel and complementary research threads: 1) critically examining the content of the memoirs in order to determine their contribution to the development of the Goddess Movement and 2) charting and sourcing the development of the major Jungian and post-Jungian theories championed in the memoirs in order to evaluate the significance of Jungian and post-Jungian thought in the Movement. The aim of this study was to gain a better understanding of the original research question: what is the significance of Jungian and post-Jungian theory for the development of the Western Goddess Movement? Each memoir is subjected to critical review of its intended audiences, its achievements, its functions and strengths, and its theoretical frameworks. Research results offered more than the experiences of five Western women, it also provided evidence to analyse the significance of Jungian and post-Jungian theory to the development of the Western Goddess Movement. The findings demonstrate the vital contributions of the analytical psychology of Carl Jung, and post-Jungians M Esther Harding, Erich Neumann, Christine Downing, E.C. Whitmont, and Jean Shinoda Bolen; the additional contributions of Sue Monk Kidd, Margaret Starbird, and Phyllis Curott, and exhibit Jungian and post-Jungian pathways to Goddess. Through a variety of approaches to Jungian categories, these memoirs constitute a literature of Individuation for the Western Goddess Movement.

Two experiments tested the tolerance of steers (Bos taurus) to sorghum ergot (Claviceps africana) during cooler months in south-east Queensland. Sorghum grain containing 2.8% ergot and 28 mg/kg ergot alkaloids (84% dihydroergosine, 10% dihydroelymoclavine, 6% festuclavine) was incorporated into feedlot rations. In a previous study in summer–autumn, ergot (1.1–4.4 mg alkaloids/kg ration) severely reduced performance in steers when the temperature–humidity index (THI; dry bulb temperature °C + 0.36 dew-point temperature °C + 41.2) was ~70, whereas a THI of ~79 was tolerated by steers fed ergot-free rations. Experiment 1 was conducted in winter–spring, with rations containing 0, 2.8, 5.6, 8.2 or 11.2 mg ergot alkaloids/kg ration. All ergot inclusions depressed feed intake (14% average reduction) and growth rate (34% average reduction), even when the weekly average daily THI was less than 65. Rectal temperatures were occasionally elevated in ergot-fed steers (P < 0.05), primarily when the THI exceeded ~65. All ergot inclusions depressed plasma prolactin concentrations in steers. Experiment 2 was predominantly carried out in winter, with weekly average daily THI <65 throughout the experiment. Rations containing 0, 0.28, 0.55 or 1.1 mg ergot alkaloids/kg were fed for 4 weeks but produced no significant effect on feed intakes and growth rates of steers. Alkaloid concentrations were then changed to 0, 2.1, 4.3 and 1.1 mg/kg, respectively. Subsequently, feed intakes declined by 17.5% (P < 0.05), and growth rates by 28% (P > 0.05) in the group receiving 4.3 mg/kg alkaloid, compared with Controls. Plasma prolactin concentrations were depressed, relative to the Controls, by dietary alkaloid inclusion greater than 1.1 mg/kg, with alkaloid intake of 4.3 mg/kg causing the greatest reduction (P < 0.05). Cattle performance in these studies shows steers can tolerate up to ~2 mg ergot alkaloid/kg (0.2% ergot) in feedlot rations under low THI conditions (< ~60–65), but previous findings indicate a much lower threshold will apply at higher THI (>65).

O presente trabalho, subordinado à temática “Comando e Controlo na Artilharia Antiaérea”, pretende problematizar algumas das questões mais recentes relativas a matérias de segurança e defesa, fruto dos mais recentes acontecimentos. Por exemplo, refira-se o abate do voo comercial na Ucrânia, entre outros inúmeros casos que se constituem como fatores que levam a questionar a capacidade de defesa dos Estados face ao fácil acesso e baixo custo destes meios, à mercê de pessoas/organizações criminosas e terroristas. Assim, é premente a necessidade de aquisição, por parte dos Estados, nomeadamente de Portugal, de uma Artilharia mais robusta e com um sistema de Comando e Controlo automático capaz de combater as potenciais e prováveis ameaças aéreas. Esta investigação pretende, então, analisar o atual sistema de Comando e Controlo da Artilharia Antiaérea nacional, por forma a identificar as suas capacidades e, em paralelo, as suas vulnerabilidades. Concomitantemente pretende-se analisar o sistema perante as ameaças aéreas e as operações que deverá executar no âmbito dos compromissos internacionais, com o objetivo fulcral de identificar prováveis potencialidades que deverão integrar o referido sistema. Pretende-se, deste modo, propor uma revisão do atual sistema no sentido de colmatar as suas prováveis lacunas e capacitando-o para uma resposta eficaz e efetiva perante eventuais ameaças, na esteira dos compromissos internacionais. No início apresentamos uma ‘revisão de literatura’ para que o leitor se familiarize com os conceitos e nomenclatura em uso nesta reflexão. Subsequentemente, expõe-se a metodologia empregue e são abordados os sistemas de Defesa Aérea e de Artilharia Antiaérea e, posteriormente, o Comando e Controlo. De seguida, apresenta-se uma análise possível dos dados provenientes das entrevistas executadas. Baseando-nos na investigação realizada, conclui-se que a Artilharia Antiaérea corre o risco sério de não dispor de capacidade de defesa, a baixa e muito baixa altitude, se não forem adquiridos rapidamente os materiais imprescindíveis para que os sistemas possam cabalmente atuar.

Aim or objective To evaluate the effectiveness of behavioural interventions that report sedentary behaviour outcomes during early childhood. Design Systematic review and meta-analysis. Data sources Academic Search Complete, CINAHL Complete, Global Health, MEDLINE Complete, PsycINFO, SPORTDiscus with Full Text and EMBASE electronic databases were searched in March 2016. Eligibility criteria for selecting studies Inclusion criteria were: (1) published in a peer-reviewed English language journal; (2) sedentary behaviour outcomes reported; (3) randomised controlled trial (RCT) study design; and (4) participants were children with a mean age of =5.9 years and not yet attending primary/ elementary school at postintervention. Results 31 studies were included in the systematic review and 17 studies in the meta-analysis. The overall mean difference in screen time outcomes between groups was -17.12 (95% CI -28.82 to -5.42) min/day with a significant overall intervention effect (Z=2.87, p=0.004). The overall mean difference in sedentary time between groups was -18.91 (95% CI -33.31 to -4.51) min/day with a significant overall intervention effect (Z=2.57, p=0.01). Subgroup analyses suggest that for screen time, interventions of =6 months duration and those conducted in a community-based setting are most effective. For sedentary time, interventions targeting physical activity (and reporting changes in sedentary time) are more effective than those directly targeting sedentary time. Summary/conclusions Despite heterogeneity in study methods and results, overall interventions to reduce sedentary behaviour in early childhood show significant reductions, suggesting that this may be an opportune time to intervene.
