High levels of local, regional, and global extinctions has progressively simplified communities in terms of both species and ecosystem functioning. Theoretical models demonstrated that the degree of functional redundancy determines the rates of functional group loss in response to species extinctions. Here, we improve the theoretical predictions by incorporating in the model interactions between species and between functional groups. In this study, we tested the effect of different scenarios of interspecific interactions and effects between functional groups on the resistance to loss of community functional groups. Virtual communities have been built with different distribution patterns of species in functional groups, both with high and low evenness. A matrix A was created to represent the net effect of interspecific interactions among all species, representing nesting patterns, modularity, sensitive species, and dominant species. Moreover, a second matrix B was created to represent the interactions between functional groups, also exhibiting different patterns. The extinction probability of each species was calculated based on community species richness and by the intensity of the interspecific interactions that act upon it and group to which it belongs. In the model, successive extinctions decrease the community species richness, the degree of functional redundancy and, consequently, the number of functional groups that remain in the system. For each scenario of functional redundancy, A, and B, we ran 1000 simulations to generate an average functional extinction curve. Different model assumptions were able to generate remarkable variation on functional extinction curves. More extreme variations occurred when the matrix A and B caused a higher heterogeneity in the species extinction probability. Scenarios with sensitive species, positive or negative, showed a greater variation than the scenarios with dominant species. Nested interactions showed greater variation than scenarios where the interactions were in modules. Communities with maximal functional evenness can only be destabilized by the interactions between species and functional groups. In contrast, communities with low functional evenness can have its resistance either increased or decreased by the interactions. The concentration of positive interactions in low redundancy groups or negative interactions in high redundancy groups was able to decrease the functional extinction rates. In contrast, the concentration of negative interactions in low redundancy groups or positive interactions in high redundancy groups was able to increase the functional extinction rates. This model shows results that are relevant for species priorization in ecosystem conservation and restoration

The Brain-Computer Interfaces (BCI) have as main purpose to establish a communication path with the central nervous system (CNS) independently from the standard pathway (nervous, muscles), aiming to control a device. The main objective of the current research is to develop an off-line BCI that separates the different EEG patterns resulting from strictly mental tasks performed by an experimental subject, comparing the effectiveness of different signal-preprocessing approaches. We also tested different classification approaches: all versus all, one versus one and a hierarchic classification approach. No preprocessing techniques were found able to improve the system performance. Furthermore, the hierarchic approach proved to be capable to produce results above the expected by literature

The study of superconducting samples in mesoscopic scale presented a remarkable improvement during the last years. Certainly, such interest is based on the fact that when the size of the samples is close to the order of the temperature dependent coherence length xi(T), and/or the size of the penetration depth lambda(T), there are some significant modifications on the physical properties of the superconducting state. This contribution tests the square cross-section size limit for the occurrence (or not) of vortices in mesoscopic samples of area L-2, where L varies discretely from 1 xi(0) to 8 xi(0).The time dependent Ginzburg-Landau (TDGL) equations approach is used upon taking the order parameter and the local magnetic field invariant along the z-direction. The vortex configurations at the equilibrium can be obtained from the TDGL equations for superconductivity as the system relaxes to the stationary state.The obtained results show that the limit of vortex penetration is for the square sample of size 3 xi(0) x 3 xi(0) in which only a single vortex are allowed into the sample. For smaller specimens, no vortex can be formed and the field entrance into the sample is continuous and the total flux penetration occurs at higher values of H/H-c2(0), where H-c2(T) is the upper critical field. Classifier ensembles are systems composed of a set of individual classifiers and a combination module, which is responsible for providing the final output of the system. In the design of these systems, diversity is considered as one of the main aspects to be taken into account since there is no gain in combining identical classification methods. The ideal situation is a set of individual classifiers with uncorrelated errors. In other words, the individual classifiers should be diverse among themselves. One way of increasing diversity is to provide different datasets (patterns and/or attributes) for the individual classifiers. The diversity is increased because the individual classifiers will perform the same task (classification of the same input patterns) but they will be built using different subsets of patterns and/or attributes. The majority of the papers using feature selection for ensembles address the homogenous structures of ensemble, i.e., ensembles composed only of the same type of classifiers. In this investigation, two approaches of genetic algorithms (single and multi-objective) will be used to guide the distribution of the features among the classifiers in the context of homogenous and heterogeneous ensembles. The experiments will be divided into two phases that use a filter approach of feature selection guided by genetic algorithm

OBJETIVO: Avaliar o método de Ulson de fixação intramedular associado à fixação externa variando a altura do travamento externo dos fios de Kirschner e sem fixação externa. MÉTODO: Foram utilizadas 18 tíbias de porcos, sendo realizada osteotomia transversal na região da tuberosidade e introduzidos dois fios de Kirschner intramedulares em cada peça, em três diferentes padrões de montagem: grupo I - travamento com minifixador externo com 3,0cm de altura; grupo II - travamento com 4,5cm de altura; grupo III: sem travamento externo. Realizaram-se ensaios mecânicos de cisalhamento, obtendo-se: carga máxima, limite de proporcionalidade e coeficiente de rigidez. RESULTADOS: Não foram encontradas diferenças significativas de carga máxima e limite de proporcionalidade entre os grupos; o grupo II apresentou maior coeficiente de rigidez. CONCLUSÃO: A altura do travamento dos fios de Kirschner no método de Ulson, dentro dos limites avaliados, não prejudicou a estabilidade do sistema de fixação da fratura.

FUNDAMENTO: A relevância do padrão de remodelação no modelo de ratos expostos à fumaça do cigarro não é conhecida. OBJETIVO: Analisar a presença de diferentes padrões de remodelação nesse modelo e sua relação com a função ventricular. MÉTODOS: Ratos fumantes (n=47) foram divididos de acordo com o padrão de geometria, analisado pelo ecocardiograma: normal (índice de massa normal e espessura relativa normal), remodelação concêntrica (índice de massa normal e espessura relativa aumentada), hipertrofia concêntrica (índice de massa aumentado e espessura relativa aumentada) e hipertrofia excêntrica (índice de massa aumentado e espessura relativa normal). RESULTADOS: Os ratos fumantes apresentaram um dos quatro padrões de geometria: padrão normal, 51%; hipertrofia excêntrica:,32%; hipertrofia concêntrica, 13% e remodelação concêntrica, 4%. Os grupos normal e hipertrofia excêntrica apresentaram menores valores de fração de ejeção e porcentagem de encurtamento que o grupo hipertrofia concêntrica. Treze animais (28%) apresentaram disfunção sistólica, detectada pela fração de ejeção e pela porcentagem de encurtamento. Na análise de regressão univariada, os padrões de geometria e o índice de massa não foram fator de predição de disfunção ventricular (p>0,05). Por outro lado, o aumento da espessura relativa da parede foi fator de predição de disfunção ventricular na análise univariada (p<0,001) e na análise multivariada, após ajuste para o índice de massa (p=0,003). CONCLUSÃO: Ratos expostos à fumaça do cigarro apresentam um dos quatro diferentes padrões de remodelação. Entre as variáveis geométricas analisadas, somente o aumento da espessura relativa da parede do ventrículo esquerdo foi fator de predição de disfunção ventricular nesse modelo.

The brazilian marginal basins have a huge potential to generate and accumulate petroleum. Incised valleys which are eroded in response to a fall of relative sea level are related to potential reservoir as well, modern drowned-valley estuaries serve as harbors to petroleum and salt industries, fisheries, waste-disposal sites and recreational areas for a significant fraction of the world s population. The combined influence of these factors has produced a dramatic increase in research on modern and ancient incised-valley systems. This research is one expression of this interest. The integrated use of satellites images and high resolution seismic (bathymetry, sides scan sonar) was used on the Apodi River mouth-RN to characterizes the continental shelf This area is located at the Potiguar Basin in the NE Brazilian Equatorial Atlantic margin. Through bathymetric and side scan sonar data processing, a digital Terrain Model was developed, and a detailed geomorphologic analysis was performed. In this way was possible to recognize the geomorphologic framework and differents sismofacies, which may influence this area. A channel extending from the ApodiMossoró river mouth to the shelf edge dominates the investigated area. This structure can be correlated with the former river valley developed during the late Pleistocene sea level fall. This channel has two main directions (NW-SE and NE-SW) probably controlled by the Potiguar Basin structures. The western margin of the channel is relatively steep and pronounced whereas the eastern margin consists only of a gentle slope. Longitudinal bedforms and massive ridges also occur. The first are formed doe to the shelf sediment rework and the reef-like structures probably are relics of submerged beachrock-lines indicating past shoreline positions during the deglacial sea-level rise. The sub-bottom seismic data allow the identification of different sismic patterns and a marcant discontinuity, interpreted as the Upper

High (H) and low (L) responder mice were selected for their ability to produce antibodies against sheep and human erythrocytes (Selection IV-A). In this selection, the difference in antibody responsiveness between H and L lines (HIV-A and LIV-A mice, respectively) was shown to depend mainly on macrophage function. The more rapid catabolism of antigens by macrophages in L mice has been suggested as the main cause of the low antibody production. Due to this high macrophage activity, L animals have been described as more resistant than H animals to intracellular pathogens. These animals were utilized as an experimental model of paracoccidioidomycosis. HIV-A and LIV-A mice were infected with Paracoccidioides brasiliensis by the intravenous route. As expected, H mice were more susceptible to P. brasiliensis with a shorter survival time and higher levels of specific antibodies when compared to L mice. Contrasting with the survival time, the lungs, spleen and liver from H mice showed typical nodular granulomas containing epithelioid and giant cells and few fungi. on the other hand, in LN-A mice, the lesions of these organs were characterized by looser granulomas with irregular borders and the presence of a large number of fungi, However, the adrenal gland showed different lesion patterns. In H mice these lesions were extensive and characterized by loose granulomas with numerous fungi, while in LIV-A mice the lesions were small and limited to the cortex. Moreover the HIV-A mice presented higher levels of serum corticosterone when compared to LIV-A ones. The higher susceptibility of H mice could be attributed to the extensive lesions of the adrenal glands. These results suggest the use of the H line from the IV-A Selection as an experimental model for further studies of adrenal involvement in paracoccidioidomycosis.

Objective: In an attempt to clarify the clonality and genetic relationships that are involved in the tumorigenesis of uterine leiomyomas, we used a total of 43 multiple leiomyomas from 14 patients and analyzed the allelic status with 15 microsatellite markers and X chromosome inactivation analysis.Study design: We have used a set of 15 microsatellite polymorphism markers mapped on 3q, 7p, 11, and 15q by automated analysis. The X chromosome inactivation was evaluated by the methylation status of the X-linked androgen receptor gene.Results: Loss of heterozygosity analysis showed a different pattern in 7 of the 8 cases with allelic loss for at least 1 of 15 microsatellite markers that were analyzed. A similar loss of heterozygosity findings at 7p22-15 was detected in 3 samples from the same patient. X chromosome inactivation analysis demonstrated the same inactivated allele in all tumors of the 9 of 12 informative patients;. different inactivation patterns were observed in 3 cases.Conclusion: Our data support the concept that uterine leiomyomas are derived from a single cell but are generated independently in the uterus. Loss of heterozygosity findings at 7p22-15 are consistent with previous data that suggested the relevance of chromosomal aberrations at 7p that were involved in individual uterine leiomyomas. Purpose: Three-dimensional finite element analysis was used to evaluate the effect of vertical and angular misfit in three-piece implant-supported screw-retained fixed prostheses on the biomechanical response in the peri-implant bone, implants, and prosthetic components. Materials and Methods: Four three-dimensional models were fabricated to represent a right posterior mandibular section with one implant in the region of the second premolar (2PM) and another in the region of the second molar (2M). The implants were splinted by a three-piece implant-supported metal-ceramic prosthesis and differed according to the type of misfit, as represented by four different models: Control = prosthesis with complete fit to the implants; UAM (unilateral angular misfit) = prosthesis presenting unilateral angular misfit of 100 pm in the mesial region of the 2M; UVM (unilateral vertical misfit) = prosthesis presenting unilateral vertical misfit of 100 pm in the mesial region of the 2M; and TVM (total vertical misfit) = prosthesis presenting total vertical misfit of 100 pm in the platform of the framework in the 2M. A vertical load of 400 N was distributed and applied on 12 centric points by the software Ansys, ie, a vertical load of 150 N was applied to each molar in the prosthesis and a vertical load of 100 N was applied at the 2PM. Results: The stress values and distribution in peri-implant bone tissue were similar for all groups. The models with misfit exhibited different distribution patterns and increased stress magnitude in comparison to the control. The highest stress values in group UAM were observed in the implant body and retention screw. The groups UVM and TVM exhibited high stress values in the platform of the framework and the implant hexagon, respectively. Conclusions: The three types of misfit influenced the magnitude and distribution of stresses. The influence of misfit on peri-implant bone tissue was modest. The salivary glands of Rhipicephalus sanguineus males at stages: unfed (control), at day seven post-attachment, and at days three and seven post-detachment from the host were examined using methods of enzymatic analysis and cell viability. At these stages of feeding, different staining patterns were observed in the cells of type IV, III, II and I acini, which were affected by degeneration in this sequence. Acid phosphatase reaction was inversely proportional to that of ATPase, while ATPase reaction was proportional to membrane integrity.Salivary gland cells of unfed males exhibited intact nucleus and plasma membrane, suggesting that the acid phosphatase detected may participate in the normal physiology of acini. In males at day seven post-attachment, intact membranes were observed in almost all types of acini, as well as stronger reaction for acid phosphatase, nuclear changes, and decrease in ATPase reaction, changes associated with the degenerative process. At days three and seven post-detachment degeneration progress, being observed loss of membrane integrity, nuclear changes, prominent decrease in ATPase reaction, and an increase in acid phosphatase reaction in the first case and a decreased of it at day seven post-detachment from the host. During cell death, alterations occurred in the following sequence: a) nuclear changes, b) loss of ATPase reaction, c) loss of integrity of the plasma membrane, and d) increase of acid phosphatase. The latter might be associated with the late degradation of cytoplasmic remnants, characterizing the process of cell death in glands of R. sanguineus males as atypical or non-classic apoptosis.
