An Analysis of the Link between Ethanol, Energy, and Crop Markets, November 2006

This study analyzes the impact of price shocks in three input and output markets critical to ethanol: gasoline, corn, and sugar. We investigate the impact of these shocks on ethanol and related agricultural markets in the United States and Brazil. We find that the composition of a country’s vehicle fleet determines the direction of the response of ethanol consumption to changes in the gasoline price. We also find that a change in feedstock costs affects the profitability of ethanol producers and the domestic ethanol price. In Brazil, where two commodities compete for sugarcane, changes in the sugar market affect the competing ethanol market.

Daniel Sudermann als Romanleser. Spuren weltlicher Literatur des Mittelalters in einer geistlichen Büchersammlung der Frühen Neuzeit

Der Beitrag untersucht Handschriften mit weltlichen Texten, die sich aus der geistlichen Büchersammlung des Spiritualisten und Schwenckfeld-Anhängers Daniel Sudermann (1550-ca. 1631) erhalten haben oder für diese Sammlung erschlossen werden können. Anhand von Lektürenotizen Sudermanns in seinen Handschriften sowie einem kommentierten Bücherverzeichnis, aber auch anhand von inhaltlichen Bezügen der Texte untereinander werden mögliche Anziehungspunkte und konkrete Leseinteressen rekonstruiert, die Sudermann mit der Profanliteratur des Mittelalters verbunden haben könnte. Dabei erweist sich, daß Sudermann die weltliche Romanliteratur des Mittelalters entgegen der bisherigen Einschätzung durchaus gewürdigt hat. Allerdings las er sie nicht mit der Faszination an der Fiktion, die ihren mittelalterlichen Lesern zuzutrauen ist, sondern rezipierte sie im Sinne historischer Quellen, wobei zwei Interessenschwerpunkte zu identifizieren sind: Sudermann beschäftigte sich mit der fabulösen Frühgeschichte des Christentums in Indien, an die eine große Mehrzahl der aus seinem Besitz bekannten weltlichen Texte direkt oder indirekt anschließt. Daneben galt seine Aufmerksamkeit adelsgenealogischen Informationen, die er der mittelalterlichen Romanliteratur entnehmen zu können glaubte. Den Aufsatz begleitet ein Faksimileabdruck von Sudermanns Autograph des kommentierten Bücherverzeichnisses.

Peroxisome proliferator-activated receptors A link between endocrinology and nutrition?

Peroxisome proliferator-activated receptors (PPARs) are members of the nuclear hormone receptor superfamily like the steroid, thyroid, or retinoid hormone receptors, which are ligand-activated transcription factors regulating gene expression. PPARs mediate the induction of the enzymes of the peroxisomal and microsomal fatty-acid oxidation pathways by hypolipidemic drugs such as clofibrate and are probably also involved in the gene expression of other lipid-metabolism-associated proteins that are controlled by fibrate hypolipidemic drugs. That PPARs play an important role in the regulation of lipid metabolism is reinforced by the discovery of their activation by physiologic concentrations of fatty acids. This observation raises the question of whether fatty acids are ligands of PPARs, which would imply that nutritional fatty acids can act like hormones.

Decision-Making in Social Enterprises: Exploring the Link between Employee Participation and Organizational Commitment

This article studies the influence of the procedural justice resulting from participation in decision-making on employees' affective commitment in social enterprises. It also examines whether any potential link between participation and commitment is due to social exchange, as is the case with for-profit companies. The study is based on data from employees of French work integration social enterprises. The results confirm the positive relationship between procedural justice and affective commitment and the mediating role of perceived organizational support and leader-member exchanges. Managerial recommendations are then given to best maintain or increase employees' involvement in the decision-making processes of social enterprises.

Transcription factors link mouse WAP-T mammary tumors with human breast cancer.

Mouse models are important tools to decipher the molecular mechanisms of mammary carcinogenesis and to mimic the respective human disease. Despite sharing common phenotypic and genetic features, the proper translation of murine models to human breast cancer remains a challenging task. In a previous study we showed that in the SV40 transgenic WAP-T mice an active Met-pathway and epithelial-mesenchymal characteristics distinguish low- and high-grade mammary carcinoma. To assign these murine tumors to corresponding human tumors we here incorporated the analysis of expression of transcription factor (TF) coding genes and show that thereby a more accurate interspecies translation can be achieved. We describe a novel cross-species translation procedure and demonstrate that expression of unsupervised selected TFs, such as ELF5, HOXA5 and TFCP2L1, can clearly distinguish between the human molecular breast cancer subtypes-or as, for example, expression of TFAP2B between yet unclassified subgroups. By integrating different levels of information like histology, gene set enrichment, expression of differentiation markers and TFs we conclude that tumors in WAP-T mice exhibit similarities to both, human basal-like and non-basal-like subtypes. We furthermore suggest that the low- and high-grade WAP-T tumor phenotypes might arise from distinct cells of tumor origin. Our results underscore the importance of TFs as common cross-species denominators in the regulatory networks underlying mammary carcinogenesis.

Marketing management is one of the necessary functions for the success of any company. Through the Marketplace platform ( marketing games) , the challenge was to manage a new marketing division of an international microcomputers company through a company called The Link , with the primary mission of creating and implementing marketing strategies for two years and ensure the return on investment of stakeholders , in a real and competitive landscape.
