Chemical composition of manganese nodules and crust collected from the Hakurei Maru Cruise GH74-5, September-October, 1974, in the Eastern Central Pacific Basin by the Geological Survey of Japan according to: Analyses and sample manganese deposits data from Cruise GH74-5 (private communication) (unpublished), Scripps Institution of Oceanography. http://www.ngdc.noaa.gov/mgg_mmbib/showref.jsp?mmbib=MIZUAA7702.

The cores and dredges described in this report were taken on the GH74-5 Expedition in September-October, 1974 by the Geological Survey of Japan from the R/V Hakurei Maru. A total of 36 cores, dredges and submarine camera sites have been visited. The survey conducted an investigation of the manganese deposits in the Eastern Pacific Basin and the East of the Okinawa islands

The olive ridley is the most abundant seaturtle species in the world but little is known of the demography of this species. We used skeletochronological data on humerus diameter growth changes to estimate the age of North Pacific olive ridley seaturtles caught incidentally by pelagic longline fisheries operating near Hawaii and from dead turtles washed ashore on the main Hawaiian Islands. Two age estimation methods [ranking, correction factor (CF)] were used and yielded age estimates ranging from 5 to 38 and 7 to 24 years, respectively. Rank age-estimates are highly correlated (r = 0.93) with straight carapace length (SCL), CF age estimates are not (r = 0.62). We consider the CF age-estimates as biologically more plausible because of the disassociation of age and size. Using the CF age-estimates, we then estimate the median age at sexual maturity to be around 13 years old (mean carapace size c. 60 cm SCL) and found that somatic growth was negligible by 15 years of age. The expected age-specific growth rate function derived using numerical differentiation suggests at least one juvenile growth spurt at about 10–12 years of age when maximum age-specific growth rates, c. 5 cm SCL year−1, are apparent.

During Cruise VA 04/2 of the R. V. Valdivia in 1972, numerous samples were collected of manganese nodules, sodiments, and the pore water of the Sediments in the area betwoen 6° N and 11° N and between 149° W and 154° W in the Central Pacific. This paper reports on the geochemical study of 70 manganese nodules from 12 stations (box-core and dredge samples). The nodules Irom a single Station vary considerably in diemical composition. These variations are of the same magnitude as the variations in nodule composition over the entire survey area. The ratios of manganese to nickel, copper, and zinc show good positive correlation as do the ratios of iron to lead and, to a lesser extent, of iron to cobalt. No correlation was found between the environment of the manganese nodules and their metal content. Three internal zones, the outer. intermediate, and core zones, of some nodules were studied in detail. Trends of differences of Chemical composition from surface to core were found for numerous elements and elemental ratios.

Detailed mineralogical characterization of micronodules is given. The main regularities of variations in composition of micronodules from Central Pacific sedimentary rocks of different ages are revealed. New data on structure and structural features of manganese minerals are reported.

This report of the GH76-1 cruise mainly includes the results of the on-board observations in the survey area of the medial-eastern part of Central Pacific Basin (5 degree -10 degree N, 170 degree -175 degree W) and partly of analytical work at the on-shore laboratory. In addition, the results of some on-board optical and geophysical works along the tracks of Japan-Ogasawara-survey area-Hawaii, are described in appendices. The GH76-1 cruise of the R/V Hakurei-maru was carried out from the 10th January to the 9th March, 1976 as the second phase field work of the Geological Survey of Japan five-year research program of study on the manganese nodule deposits of the Central Pacific Basin and also as a part of the National Research Institute for Pollution and Resources research program of technological study on the exploitation of deep sea mineral resources. The GSJ research program (F.Y. 1974-F.Y. 1978) aims at providing basic information on the manganese nodule distribution and their origin on the deep sea floor of the Central Pacific Basin bounded by the Marshall Ridge to the west, the Christmas Ridge to the east, and the Mid-Pacific Mountains to the north. The first phase of investigation was carried out during the GH74-5 cruise in the eastern part of the area (6 degree -10 degree 30'W, 164 degree 30'-171 degree 30'N)(Mizuno and Chujo, eds., 1975), and the present second phase covered an areas of 5 degree square, just west of the GH74-5 area.

Eight measurements of heat flow in the Pacific floor were made during Cruise 48 of R/V Vityaz; four on the Manihiki Plateau, three - on the Marcus-Necker Rise, and one - in the Hawaiian Trough. Higher than average heat flows, up to 3.2 HFU, were recorded on submarine uplifts.
