Metallic Ru has been found to coexist separately with CaO, RuO2, and the interoxide phases, Ca2RuO4, Ca3Ru2O7, and CaRuO3, present along the pseudobinary system CaO-RuO2. The standard Gibbs energies of formation (Df((ox))G(o)) of the three calcium ruthenates from their component oxides have been measured in the temperature range 925-1350 K using solid-state cells with yttria-stabilized zirconia as the electrolyte and Ru+RuO2 as the reference electrode. The standard Gibbs energies of formation (Deltaf((ox))G(o)) of the compounds can be represented by Ca2RuO4:Deltaf((ox))G(o)/J mol(-1)=-38,340-6.611 T (+/-120), Ca3Ru2O7 : Df((ox))G(o)/J mol(-1)=-75,910-11.26 T (+/-180), and CaRuO3 : Deltaf((ox))G(o)/J mol(-1)=-35,480-3.844 T(+/-70). The data for Ca2RuO4 corresponds to the stoichiometric composition, which has an orthorhombic structure, space group Pbca, with short c axis ("S'' form). The structural features of the ternary oxides responsible for their mild entropy stabilization are discussed. A three-dimensional oxygen potential diagram for the system Ca-Ru-O is developed as a function of composition and temperature from the results obtained. Using the Neumann-Kopp rule to estimate the heat capacity of the ternary oxides relative to their constituent binary oxides, the standard enthalpies of formation of the three calcium ruthenates from the elements and their standard entropies at 298.15 K are evaluated. Recently, there has been growing interest in Ca modified BaTiO3 structures due to their larger electro-optic coefficients for their use in optical storage of information over conventional BaTiO3 crystals. Barium Calcium Titanate (BCT) shows promising applications in advanced laser systems, optical interconnects and optical storage devices. BaTiO3 thin films of varied Ca (3 at. % - 15 at. %) doping were deposited using pulsed laser ablation (KrF excimer laser) technique over Pt/Si substrates. The stoichiometric and the compositional analysis were carried out using EDAX and SIMS. The dielectric studies were done at the frequency regime of 40 Hz to 100 kHz at different ambient temperatures from 200 K to 600 K. The BCT thin films exhibited diffuse phase transition, which was of a typical non lead relaxor behavior and had high dielectric constant and low dielectric loss. The phase transition for the different compositions of BCT thin films was near the room temperature, showing a marked departure from the bulk phase transition. The C - V and the hysteresis behavior confirmed the ferroelectric nature below the phase transition and paraelectric at the room temperature.

Thin films of ferroelectric ABi2Ta2O9 bismuth-layered structure, where A = Ba, Sr and Ca, were prepared by pulsed laser deposition technique on Pt/TiO2/SiO2/Si(100) substrates. The influence of substrate temperature between 500 to 750°C, and oxygen partial pressure 100-300 mTorr, on the structural and electrical properties of the films was investigated. The films deposited above 650°C substrate temperature showed complete Aurivillius layered structure. Films annealed at 750°C for 1h in oxygen atmosphere have exhibited better electrical properties. Atomic force microscopy study of surface topography shows that the films grown at lower temperature has smaller grains and higher surface roughness. This paper discusses the pronounced influence of A-site cation substitution on the structural and ferroelectric properties with the aid of Raman spectroscopy, X-ray diffraction and electrical properties. The degradation of ferroelectric properties with Ba and Ca substitution at A-sites is attributed to the higher structural distortion caused by changing tolerance factor. A systematic proportionate variation of coercive field is attributed to electronegativity difference of A-site cations.

We have synthesized ceramics of A2FeReO6 double-perovskites A2FeReO6 (A=Ba, Ca). Structural characterizations indicate a cubic structure with a=8.0854(1) Å for Ba2FeReO6 and a distorted monoclinic symmetry with a=5.396(1) Å, b=5.522(1) Å, c=7.688(2) Å and β=90.4° for Ca2FeReO6. The barium compound is metallic from 5K to 385K, i.e. no metal-insulator transition has been seen up to 385K, and the calcium compound is semiconducting from 5K to 385K. Magnetization measurements show a ferrimagnetic behavior for both materials, with Tc =315 K for Ba2FeReO6 and above 385K for Ca2FeReO6. At 5K we observed, only for Ba2FeReO6, a negative magnetoresistance of 10% in a magnetic field of 5T. Electrical, magnetic and thermal properties are discussed and compared to those of the analogous compounds Sr2Fe(Mo,Re)O6 recently studied.

Nanoparticles (dia ~ 5 - 7 nm) of Bi0.5X0.5(X=Ca,Sr)MnO3 are prepared by polymer assisted sol-gel method and characterized by various physico-chemical techniques. X-ray diffraction gives evidence for single phasic nature of the materials as well as their structures. Mono dispersed to a large extent, isolated nanoparticles are seen in the transmission electron micrographs. High resolution electron microscopy shows the crystalline nature of the nanoparticles. Superconducting quantum interferometer based magnetic measurements from 10K to 300K show that these nanomanganites retain the charge ordering nature unlike Pr and Nd based nanomanganites. The CO in Bi based manganites is thus found to be very robust consistent with the observation that magnetic field of the order of 130 T are necessary to melt the CO in these compounds. These results are supported by electron magnetic resonance measurements.

The activities of CaO and Al2O3 in lime-alumina melts were studied by Knudsen cell-mass spectrometry at 2060 K. Emf of solid state cells, with CaF2 as the electrolyte, was measured from 923 to 1223 K to obtain the free energies of formation of the interoxide compounds. The results are critically evaluated in the light of data reported in the literature on phase equilibria, activities in melts, and stabilities of compounds. A coherent set of data is presented, including the previously unknown free energy of formation of CaO.6Al2O3 and the temperature dependence of activities in the liquid phase.

Phase relations in the systems SrO-Y2O3-CuO-O2 and CaO-Y2O3-CuO-O2 at 1173 K were established by equilibrating different compositions in flowing oxygen gas at a pressure of 1.01 × 105 Pa. The quenched samples were examined by optical microscopy, X-ray diffraction (XRD), energy dispersive analysis of X-rays (EDAX), and electron spin resonance (ESR). In the system SrO-Y2O3-CuO-O2, except for the limited substitution of Y3+ for Sr2+ ions in the ternary oxide Sr14Cu24O41, no new quaternary phase was found to be stable. The compositions corresponding to the solid solution Sr14−xYxCu24O41 and the compound SrCuO2+δ lie above the plane containing SrO, Y2O3, and CuO,displaced towards the oxygen apex. However, in the system CaO-Y203-CuO-O2 at 1173 K, all the condensed phases lie on the plane containing CaO, Y203, and CuO, and a new quaternary oxide YCa2Cu306.s is present. The quaternary phase has a composition that lies at the center of the nonstoichiometric field of the analogous phase YBa2Cu307_~ in the BaO-Y203-CuO-O2 system. The compound YCa2Cu306.s has the tetragonal structure and does not become superconducting at low temperature. Surprisingly, phase relations in the three systems CaO-Y203-CuO-O2, SrO-Y203-CuO-O2, and BaO-Y203-CuO-O2 are found to be quite different.

Phase relations in the pseudoternary system NiO-CaO-SiO2 at 1373 K are established. The coexisting phases are identified by X-ray diffraction and energy-dispersive X-ray analysis of equilibrated samples. There is only one quaternary oxide CaNiSi2O6 with clinopyroxene structure. The Gibbs energy of formation of CaNiSi2O6 is measured using a solid state galvanic cell incorporating stabilized zirconia as the solid electrolyte in the temperature range of 1000 to 1400 K:Pt, Ni + SiO2 + CaSiO3 + CaNiSi2O6 \ (Y2O3)ZrO2 \ Ni + NiO, Pt From the electromotive force (emf) of the cell, the Gibbs energy of formation of CaNiSi2O6 from NiO, SiO2, and CaSiO3 is obtained. To derive the Gibbs energy of formation of the quaternary oxide from component binary oxides, the free energy of formation of CaSiO, is determined separately using a solid state cell based on single crystal CaF2 as the electrolyte: Pt, O-2, CaO + CaF2 \ CaF2 \ CaSiO3 + SiO2 + CaF2, O-2, Pt The results can be expressed by the following equations: NiO (r.s) + CaO (r.s) + 2SiO(2) (qz) --> CaNiSi2O6 (pyr) Delta G degrees = -115,700 + 10.63T (+/-100) J mol(-1) CaO (r.s) + SiO2 (qz) --> CaSiO3 (wol) Delta G degrees = -90,030 -0.61T (+/-60) J mol(-1).

he standard Gibbs energy of formation of CaCu3Ti4O12 (CCTO) from CaTiO3, CuO and TiO2 has been determined as a function of temperature from 925 to 1350 K using a solid-state electrochemical cell with yttria-stabilized zirconia as the solid electrolyte. Combining this result with information in the literature on CaTiO3, the standard Gibbs energy of formation of CCTO from its component binary oxides, CaO, CuO and TiO2, has been obtained: View the MathML source (CaCu3Ti4O12)/J mol−1 (±600) = −125231 + 6.57 (T/K). The oxygen chemical potential corresponding to the reduction of CCTO to CaTiO3, TiO2 and Cu2O has been calculated from the electrochemical measurements as a function of temperature and compared on an Ellingham diagram with those for the reduction of CuO to Cu2O and Cu2O to Cu. The oxygen partial pressures corresponding to the reduction reactions at any chosen temperature can be read using the nomograms provided on either side of the diagram. The effect of the oxygen partial pressure on phase relations in the pseudo-ternary system CaO–CuO/Cu2O–TiO2 at 1273 K has been evaluated. The phase diagrams allow identification of secondary phases that may form during the synthesis of the CCTO under equilibrium conditions. The secondary phases may have a significant effect on the extrinsic component of the colossal dielectric response of CCTO.

An isothermal section of the system Al2O3-CaO-CoO at 1500 K has been established by equilibrating 22 samples of different compositions at high temperature and phase identification by optical and scanning electron microscopy, X-ray diffraction, and energy dispersive spectroscopy after quenching to room temperature. Only one quaternary oxide, Ca3CoAl4O10, was identified inside the ternary triangle. Based on the phase relations, a solid-state electrochemical cell was designed to measure the Gibbs energy of formation of Ca3CoAl4O10 in the temperature range from 1150 to 1500 K. Calcia-stabilized zirconia was used as the solid electrolyte and a mixture of Co + CoO as the reference electrode. The cell can be represented as: ( - )\textPt,\textCaAl 2 \textO 4 + \textCa 1 2 \textAl 1 4 \textO 3 3 + \textCa 3 \textCoAl 4 \textO 10 + \textCo//(CaO)ZrO 2 \text// \textCoO + \textCo,\text Pt ( + ). (−)PtCaAl2O4+Ca12Al14O33+Ca3CoAl4O10+Co//(CaO)ZrO2//CoO+Co Pt (+) From the emf of the cell, the standard Gibbs energy change for the Ca3CoAl4O10 formation reaction, CoO + 3/5CaAl2O4 + 1/5Ca12Al14O33 → Ca3CoAl4O10, is obtained as a function of temperature: \Updelta Gr\texto Unknown control sequence '\Updelta'/J mol−1 (±50) = −2673 + 0.289 (T/K). The standard Gibbs energy of formation of Ca3CoAl4O10 from its component binary oxides, Al2O3, CaO, and CoO is derived as a function of temperature. The standard entropy and enthalpy of formation of Ca3CoAl4O10 at 298.15 K are evaluated. Chemical potential diagrams for the system Al2O3-CaO-CoO at 1500 K are presented based on the results of this study and auxiliary information from the literature.

Homogeneous thin films of Sr(0.6)Ca(0.4)TiO(3) (SCT40) and asymmetric multilayer of SrTiO(3) (STO) and CaTiO(3) (CTO) were fabricated on Pt/Ti/SiO(2)/Si substrates by using pulsed laser deposition technique. The electrical behavior of films was observed within a temperature range of 153 K-373 K. A feeble dielectric peak of SCT40 thin film at 273 K is justified as paraelectric to antiferroelectric phase transition. Moreover, the Curie-Weiss temperature, determined from the epsilon'(T) data above the transition temperature is found to be negative. Using Landau theory, the negative Curie-Weiss temperature is interpreted in terms of an antiferroelectric transition. The asymmetric multilayer exhibits a broad dielectric peak at 273 K. and is attributed to interdiffusion at several interfaces of multilayer. The average dielectric constants for homogeneous Sr(0.6)Ca(0.4)TiO(3) films (similar to 650) and asymmetric multilayered films (similar to 350) at room temperature are recognized as a consequence of grain size effect. Small frequency dispersion in the real part of the dielectric constants and relatively low dielectric losses for both cases ensure high quality of the films applicable for next generation integrated devices. A capillary-enforced template-based method has been applied to fabricate Pb(0.76)Ca(0.24)TiO(3) (PCT24) nanotubes via filling PCT24 precursor solution, prepared by modified sol-gel method, into nanochannels of anodic aluminum oxide templates. The morphology and structure of as-prepared PCT24 were examined by scanning electron microscopy, transmission electron microscopy (TEM) and X-ray diffraction techniques. The obtained PCT24 nanotubes with diameter of similar to 200 nm and wall thickness of similar to 20 nm exhibited a tetragonal perovskite structure. High resolution TEM (HRTEM) analysis confirmed that as-obtained PCT24 nanotubes made up of nanoparticles (5-8 nm) which were randomly aligned in the nanotubes. Formation of some solid crystalline PCT24 nanorods, Y-junctions and multi-branches were observed. Interconnections in the pores of template are responsible for the growth of Y-junctions and multi-branches. The possible formation mechanism of PCT24 nanotubes/nanorods was discussed. Ferroelectric hysteresis loops of PCT24 nanotube arrays were measured, showing a room temperature ferroelectric characteristic of as-prepared PCT24 nanotubes. (C) 2011 Elsevier B.V. We present reduced dimensionality (RD) 3D HN(CA)NH for efficient sequential assignment in proteins. The experiment correlates the N-15 and H-1 chemical shift of a residue ('i') with those of its immediate N-terminal (i - 1) and C-terminal (i + 1) neighbors and provides four-dimensional chemical shift correlations rapidly with high resolution. An assignment strategy is presented which combines the correlations observed in this experiment with amino acid type information obtained from 3D CBCA(CO)NH. By classifying the 20 amino acid types into seven distinct categories based on C-13(beta) chemical shifts, it is observed that a stretch of five sequentially connected residues is sufficient to map uniquely on to the polypeptide for sequence specific resonance assignments. This method is exemplified by application to three different systems: maltose binding protein (42 kDa), intrinsically disordered domain of insulin-like growth factor binding protein-2 and Ubiquitin. Fast data acquisition is demonstrated using longitudinal H-1 relaxation optimization. Overall, 3D HN(CA)NH is a powerful tool for high throughput resonance assignment, in particular for unfolded or intrinsically disordered polypeptides.
