Joint sentiment-topic (JST) model was previously proposed to detect sentiment and topic simultaneously from text. The only supervision required by JST model learning is domain-independent polarity word priors. In this paper, we modify the JST model by incorporating word polarity priors through modifying the topic-word Dirichlet priors. We study the polarity-bearing topics extracted by JST and show that by augmenting the original feature space with polarity-bearing topics, the in-domain supervised classifiers learned from augmented feature representation achieve the state-of-the-art performance of 95% on the movie review data and an average of 90% on the multi-domain sentiment dataset. Furthermore, using feature augmentation and selection according to the information gain criteria for cross-domain sentiment classification, our proposed approach performs either better or comparably compared to previous approaches. Nevertheless, our approach is much simpler and does not require difficult parameter tuning.

The antioxidants butylated hydroxytoluene (BHT, 1 mM) and d-α-tocopherol (10 μM) completely attenuated protein degradation in murine myotubes in response to both proteolysis-inducing factor (PIF) and angiotensin II (Ang II), suggesting that the formation of reactive oxygen species (ROS) plays an important role in this process. Both PIF and Ang II induced a rapid and transient increase in ROS formation in myotubes, which followed a parabolic dose-response curve, similar to that for total protein degradation. Antioxidant treatment attenuated the increase in expression and activity of the ubiquitin-proteasome proteolytic pathway by PIF and Ang II, by preventing the activation of the transcription factor nuclear factor-κB (NF-κB), through inhibition of phosphorylation of the NF-κB inhibitor protein (I-κB) and its subsequent degradation. ROS formation by both PIF and Ang II was attenuated by diphenyleneiodonium (10 μM), suggesting that it was mediated through the NADPH oxidase system. ROS formation was also attenuated by trifluoroacetyl arachidonic acid (10 μM), a specific inhibitor of cytosolic phospholipase A2, U-73122 (5 μM) and D609 (200 μM), inhibitors of phospholipase C and calphostin C (300 nM), a highly specific inhibitor of protein kinase C (PKC), all known activators of NADPH oxidase. Myotubes containing a dominant-negative mutant of PKC did not show an increase in ROS formation in response to either PIF or Ang II. The two Rac1 inhibitors W56 (200 μM) and NSC23766 (10 μM) also attenuated both ROS formation and protein degradation induced by both PIF and Ang II. Rac1 is known to mediate signalling between the phosphatidylinositol-3 kinase (PI-3K) product and NADPH oxidase, and treatment with LY24002 (10 μM), a highly selective inhibitor of PI-3K, completely attenuated ROS production in response to both PIF and Ang II, and inhibited total protein degradation, while the inactive analogue LY303511 (100 μM) had no effect. ROS formation appears to be important in muscle atrophy in cancer cachexia, since treatment of weight losing mice bearing the MAC16 tumour with d-α-tocopherol (1 mg kg- 1) attenuated protein degradation and increased protein synthesis in skeletal muscle. © 2007 Elsevier Inc. The aim of this review is to present a coherent treatment of the fundamental aspects of the science that underpins current technological practices, and future advances, in the stabilisation of synthetic organic polymers. Aspects of polymer oxidation are introduced first before discussing the role of antioxidants, with numerous examples, to illustrate their basic mechanisms of action. The state of the art is discussed with particular emphasis on recent development and progress.

An investigation, employing edge-on transmission electron microscopy, of the microstructure of aluminide diffusion coatings on a single crystal y' strengthened nickel base super alloy is reported. An examination has been made of the effect of postcoating exposure at 1100°C on the stability of the coating matrix, a B2 type phase, nominally NiAl. Precipitation in the coating is considered with respect to both decomposition of the B2 matrix to other Ni-Al (plus titanium) phases and the formation of chromium bearing precipitates. A comparison is drawn with behaviour at lower temperatures (850-950°C). © 1995 The Institute of Materials.

Ocean acidification and warming will be most pronounced in the Arctic Ocean. Aragonite shell-bearing pteropods in the Arctic are expected to be among the first species to suffer from ocean acidification. Carbonate undersaturation in the Arctic will first occur in winter and because this period is also characterized by low food availability, the overwintering stages of polar pteropods may develop into a bottleneck in their life cycle. The impacts of ocean acidification and warming on growth, shell degradation (dissolution), and mortality of two thecosome pteropods, the polar Limacina helicina and the boreal L. retroversa, were studied for the first time during the Arctic winter in the Kongsfjord (Svalbard). The abundance of L. helicina and L. retroversa varied from 23.5 to 120 ind /m2 and 12 to 38 ind /m2, and the mean shell size ranged from 920 to 981 µm and 810 to 823 µm, respectively. Seawater was aragonite-undersaturated at the overwintering depths of pteropods on two out of ten days of our observations. A 7-day experiment [temperature levels: 2 and 7 °C, pCO2 levels: 350, 650 (only for L. helicina) and 880 ?atm] revealed a significant pCO2 effect on shell degradation in both species, and synergistic effects between temperature and pCO2 for L. helicina. A comparison of live and dead specimens kept under the same experimental conditions indicated that both species were capable of actively reducing the impacts of acidification on shell dissolution. A higher vulnerability to increasing pCO2 and temperature during the winter season is indicated compared with a similar study from fall 2009. Considering the species winter phenology and the seasonal changes in carbonate chemistry in Arctic waters, negative climate change effects on Arctic thecosomes are likely to show up first during winter, possibly well before ocean acidification effects become detectable during the summer season.

The Ming deposit, Newfoundland Appalachians, is a metamorphosed (upper greenschist to lower amphibolite facies), Cambro-Ordovician, bimodalmafic volcanogenic massive sulfide (VMS) deposit that consists of several, spatially-associated, elongated orebodies composed of stratabound semimassive to massive sulfides and/or discordant sulfide stringers in a rhyodacitic footwall. Copper is the main commodity; however, the deposit contains precious metal-bearing zones with elevated Au grades. In this study, field observations, microscopy, and micro-analytical tools including electron microprobe, laser ablation inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry, and secondary ion mass spectrometry were used to constrain the relative timing of precious metal emplacement, the physico-chemical conditions of hydrothermal fluid precipitation, and the sources of sulfur, precious metals, semi-metals and metals. The ore mineral assemblage is complex and indicates an intermediate sulfidation state. Pyrite and chalcopyrite are the dominant ore minerals with minor sphalerite and pyrrhotite, and trace galena, arsenopyrite and cubanite. Additional trace phases include tellurides, NiSb phases, sulfosalts, electrum, AgHg±Au alloys, and oxides. Silver phases and precious metals occur predominantly in semi-massive and massive sulfides as free grains, and as grains spatially associated with arsenopyrite and/or sulfosalts. Precious metal phases occurring between recrystallized pyrite and within cataclastic pyrite are rare. Hence, the complex ore assemblage and textures strongly suggest syngenetic precious metal emplacement, whereas metamorphism and deformation only internally and locally remobilized precious metal phases. The ore assemblage formed from reduced, acidic hydrothermal fluids over a range of temperatures (≈350 to below 260ºC). The abundance of telluride and Ag-bearing tetrahedrite, however, varies strongly between the different orebodies indicating variable ƒTe₂, ƒSe₂, mBi, and mSb within the hydrothermal fluids. The variations in the concentrations of semi-metals and metals (As, Bi, Hg, Sb, Se, Te), as well as Au and Ag, were due to variations in temperature but also to a likely contribution of magmatic fluids into the VMS hydrothermal system from presumably different geothermal reservoirs. Sulfur isotope studies indicate at least two sulfur sources: sulfur from thermochemically-reduced seawater sulfate and igneous sulfur. The source of igneous sulfur is the igneous footwall, direct magmatic fluid/volatiles, or both. Upper greenschist to lower amphibolite metamorphic conditions and deformation had no significant effect on the sulfur isotope composition of the sulfides at the Ming deposit.

TRIB2 is a member of the mammalian Tribbles family of serine/threonine pseudokinases (TRIB1-3). Here, we studied murine haematopoiesis after Trib2 ablation under steady state and proliferative stress conditions, including genotoxic and oncogenic stress. At the steady state, we found that TRIB2 loss did not adversely affect peripheral blood cell counts and populations. No detectable significant differences were found in the populations of haematopoietic stem and progenitor cells. However, Trib2-/- mice had significantly higher thymic cellularity due to the increased proliferation of Trib2-/- developing thymocytes which give rise to increased number of mature thymic subsets. During stressed haematopoiesis, Trib2-/- developing thymocytes demonstrate hypersensitivity to 5-fluorouracil-induced cell death. Nevertheless, Trib2-/- mice exhibit accelerated thymopoietic recovery post 5-fluorouracil treatment due to increased cell division kinetics of developing thymocytes. In an experimental murine T-cell acute lymphoblastic leukaemia (T-ALL) model, Trib2-/- mice had reduced latency in vivo which associated with aggressive T-ALL phenotypes and impaired activation of mitogen-activated protein kinase. Gene set enrichment analysis showed that TRIB2 expression is elevated in immature subtype of human T-ALL enriched with mitogen-activated protein kinase signalling. However, TRIB2 expression is suppressed in mature subtype of human T-ALL. Thus, TRIB2 emerges as a novel regulator of thymocyte cellular proliferation, important for the thymopoietic response to genotoxic and oncogenic stress, and possessing tumour suppressor function. In Drosophila, Tribbles promotes degradation of String which is an orthologue of mammalian CDC25 phosphatases in order to arrest cell cycle during embryonic development. Here, we showed that the role of Tribbles-induced degradation of String is evolutionarily conserved in TRIB2. We found that TRIB2 interacts with CDC25B/C but not CDC25A isoform. Overexpression of TRIB2 promotes polyubiquitination and degradation of CDC25C. Hence, future works are warranted to examine TRIB2-CDC25C interaction in the context of developing thymocytes and in T-cell acute lymphoblastic leukaemia, the malignant counterpart.

Abstract: We present an optical sensing methodology to estimate the fatigue damage stateof structures made of carbon fiber reinforced polymer (CFRP), by measuring variations on the surface roughness. Variable amplitude loads (VAL), which represent realistic loads during aeronautical missions of fighter aircraft (FALSTAFF) have been applied to coupons until failure. Stiffness degradation and surface roughness variations have been measured during the life of the coupons obtaining a Pearson correlation of 0.75 between both variables. The data were compared with a previous study for Constant Amplitude Load (CAL) obtaining similar results. Conclusions suggest that the surface roughness measured in strategic zones is a useful technique for structural health monitoring of CFRP structures, and that it is independent of the type of load applied. Surface roughness can be measured in the field by optical techniques such as speckle, confocal perfilometers and interferometry, among others.

This work presents an optical non-contact technique to evaluate the fatigue damage state of CFRP structures measuring the irregularity factor of the surface. This factor includes information about surface topology and can be measured easily on field, by techniques such as optical perfilometers. The surface irregularity factor has been correlated with stiffness degradation, which is a well-accepted parameter for the evaluation of the fatigue damage state of composite materials. Constant amplitude fatigue loads (CAL) and realistic variable amplitude loads (VAL), representative of real in- flight conditions, have been applied to “dog bone” shaped tensile specimens. It has been shown that the measurement of the surface irregularity parameters can be applied to evaluate the damage state of a structure, and that it is independent of the type of fatigue load that has caused the damage. As a result, this measurement technique is applicable for a wide range of inspections of composite material structures, from pressurized tanks with constant amplitude loads, to variable amplitude loaded aeronautical structures such as wings and empennages, up to automotive and other industrial applications.

ABSTRACT: Organic residues from sugarcane crop and processing (vinasse, boiler ash, cake filter, and straw) are commonly applied or left on the soil to enhance its fertility. However, they can influence pesticide degradation and sorption. The objective of this study was to assess the effect of adding these organic residues on the degradation and sorption of fipronil and atrazine in two soils of the State of Mato Grosso do Sul, MS, Brazil. The degradation experiment was carried out with laboratory-incubated (40 days; 28°C; 70% field capacity) soils (0-10cm). The batch equilibration method was used to determine sorption. Fipronil (half-life values of 15-105 days) showed to be more persistent than atrazine (7-17 days). Vinasse application to the soil favored fipronil and atrazine degradation, whereas cake filter application decreased the degradation rates for both pesticides. Values for sorption coefficients (Kd) were determined for fipronil (5.1-13.2mL g-1) and atrazine (0.5-1.5mL g-1). Only straw and cake filter residues enhanced fipronil sorption when added to the soil, whereas all sugarcane residues increased atrazine sorption.
