During the Soufrière Hills eruption, vulcanian explosions have generally occurred 1) in episodic cycles; 2) isolated during pauses in extrusion, and 3) after major collapses of the dome. In a different eruptive context, significant vulcanian explosions occurred on 29 July 2008, 3 December 2008, and 3 January 2009. Deposits are pumiceous except for the 3 December event. We reconstructed the dispersal pattern of the deposits and their textural characteristics to evaluate erupted volume and vesicularity of the magma at fragmentation. We discuss the implications of these explosions in terms of eruptive processes and chronology, and the hazards posed by their sudden and often unheralded occurrence. We suggest that overpressurization of the conduit can develop over time-scales of months to weeks by a process of self-sealing of conduit walls and/or the cooling dome by silica polymorphs. This work provides new insights for understanding the generation of hazardous vulcanian explosions at andesitic volcanoes.

Objective: There were two aims to this study: first to examine whether emotional abuse and neglect are significant predictors of psychological and somatic symptoms, and lifetime trauma exposure in women presenting to a primary care practice, and second to examine the strength of these relationships after controlling for the effects of other types of childhood abuse and trauma. Method: Two-hundred and five women completed the Childhood Trauma Questionnaire (Bernstein et al., 1994), Trauma History Questionnaire (Green, 1996), the Symptom Checklist-revised (Derogatis, 1997), and the Revised Civilian Mississippi Scale for posttraumatic stress disorder (Norris & Perilla, 1996) when presenting to their primary care physician for a visit. Hierarchical multiple regression analyses were conducted to examine unique contributions of emotional abuse and neglect variables on symptom measures while controlling for childhood sexual and physical abuse and lifetime trauma exposure. Results: A history of emotional abuse and neglect was associated with increased anxiety, depression, posttraumatic stress and physical symptoms, as well as lifetime trauma exposure. Physical and sexual abuse and lifetime trauma were also significant predictors of physical and psychological symptoms. Hierarchical multiple regressions demonstrated that emotional abuse and neglect predicted symptomatology in these women even when controlling for other types of abuse and lifetime trauma exposure. Conclusions: Long-standing behavioral consequences may arise as a result of childhood emotional abuse and neglect, specifically, poorer emotional and physical functioning, and vulnerability to further trauma exposure. The rate of high energy cosmic ray muons as measured underground is shown to be strongly correlated with upper-air temperatures during short-term atmospheric (10-day) events. The effects are seen by correlating data from the MINOS underground detector and temperatures from the European Centre for Medium Range Weather Forecasts during the winter periods from 2003-2007. This effect provides an independent technique for the measurement of meteorological conditions and presents a unique opportunity to measure both short and long-term changes in this important part of the atmosphere. The Main Injector Neutrino Oscillation Search (MINOS) experiment uses an accelerator-produced neutrino beam to perform precision measurements of the neutrino oscillation parameters in the ""atmospheric neutrino"" sector associated with muon neutrino disappearance. This long-baseline experiment measures neutrino interactions in Fermilab`s NuMI neutrino beam with a near detector at Fermilab and again 735 km downstream with a far detector in the Soudan Underground Laboratory in northern Minnesota. The two detectors are magnetized steel-scintillator tracking calorimeters. They are designed to be as similar as possible in order to ensure that differences in detector response have minimal impact on the comparisons of event rates, energy spectra and topologies that are essential to MINOS measurements of oscillation parameters. In this generality. the answer is no, as proved by W.T. Cowers in 1996. In the present paper, we provide a very simple necessary and sufficient condition on the 10-tuples (k, l, m, n. p, q, r, s, u, v) in N with p+q+u >= 3, r+s+v >= 3, uv >= 1, (p,q)$(0,0), (r,s)not equal(0,0) and u=1 or v=1 or (p. q) = (1, 0) or (r, s) = (0, 1), which guarantees that X is isomorphic to Y whenever these Banach spaces satisfy X(u) similar to X(p)circle plus Y(q), Y(u) similar to X(r)circle plus Y(s), and A(k) circle plus B(l) similar to A(m) circle plus B(n). Namely, delta = +/- 1 or lozenge not equal 0, gcd(lozenge, delta (p + q - u)) divides p + q - u and gcd(lozenge, delta(r + s - v)) divides r + s - v, where 3 = k - I - in + n is the characteristic number of the 4-tuple (k, l, m, n) and lozenge = (p - u)(s - v) - rq is the discriminant of the 6-tuple (p, q, r, s, U, v). We conjecture that this result is in some sense a maximal extension of the classical Pelczynski`s decomposition method in Banach spaces: the case (1, 0. 1, 0, 2. 0, 0, 2. 1. 1). Suppose that X and Y are Banach spaces isomorphic to complemented subspaces of each other. In 1996, W. T. Gowers solved the Schroeder- Bernstein Problem for Banach spaces by showing that X is not necessarily isomorphic to Y. However, if X-2 is complemented in X with supplement A and Y-2 is complemented in Y with supplement B, that is, { X similar to X-2 circle plus A Y similar to Y-2 circle plus B, then the classical Pelczynski`s decomposition method for Banach spaces shows that X is isomorphic to Y whenever we can assume that A = B = {0}. But unfortunately, this is not always possible. In this paper, we show that it is possible to find all finite relations of isomorphism between A and B which guarantee that X is isomorphic to Y. In order to do this, we say that a quadruple (p, q, r, s) in N is a P-Quadruple for Banach spaces if X is isomorphic to Y whenever the supplements A and B satisfy A(p) circle plus B-q similar to A(r) circle plus B-s . Then we prove that (p, q, r, s) is a P-Quadruple for Banach spaces if and only if p - r = s - q = +/- 1.

The aim of this licentiate thesis is to examine how, and in what ways, vocational English is a part of English language teaching in the Building and Construc­tion Programme in Sweden, and what the influences are for such pedagogy. The main research question is how policy documents relate to the views of teachers and their educational practice regarding vocational English. The study consists of two parts: a textual policy analysis of the three latest upper secondary school reforms in Sweden (Lgy 70, Lpf 94, and Gy 2011), and semi-structured interviews with practicing English teachers in the Building and Construction Programme. The interviews are categorised by using Spradley’s (1979) semantic relationships and taxonomies. Balls’ (Ball, 1993) and Ozga’s (1990; 2000) concept of policy enactment is used in the analysis as well as Bernstein’s (1990; 2000) theoretical framework of classification, framing, and horizontal and vertical discourse. The results show that five of the six teachers in the interviews work with vocational English in some way. The study also shows that there is a distinct gap between policy and practice. Several of the teachers have the notion that they are supposed to work with vocational English and that it must be written down in policy somewhere. The greatest influence on the teaching for these teachers are their students, either indirectly or directly. Further, the study shows that different frame factors such as time poverty hinders the teachers from reading policy texts and cooperating with the vocational teachers in the Building and Construction Programme.

Este trabalho discute o que vem sendo entendido e praticado como democracia escolar. Embasa-se na teoria de Basil Bernstein (1996,1998, 2000) sobre “democracia e direitos pedagógicos”, avaliando o ensino fundamental e médio, em três escolas públicas no sudoeste do Paraná. Utiliza, na coleta de dados, os princípios de distribuição de imagens, de distribuição de conhecimentos e de disponibilização de recursos, que subsidiam e caracterizam os direitos de crescimento pleno, de inclusão e de participação. Explicita o processo de organização escolar, seus limites e possibilidades tendo em vista a gestão democrática. Realiza, através da pesquisa qualitativa etnográfica, uma leitura e compreensão de diferentes contextos de escola pública, interpretando suas semelhanças e diferenças, face à escola democrática possível. Apresenta questões para reflexão que envolve as possibilidades a) do crescimento pleno, b) do processo de inclusão e c) da dinâmica da participação, que podem levar as pessoas a manter, a transformar e a construir uma nova ordem social.

Industrial segment uses natural resources in a wide scale, but evaluate the use of these resources is a complex and new task. Few is known about existing methodologies of evaluation, mainly because of the fact that the value of this resource is more implicit than explicit. It is known that evaluation methods support the environmental accounting but the industrial community for an effective environmental management of their businesses does not yet use this tool in a regular basis. The main objective of this work is to analyze how companies who develop industrial activities on mining, siderurgy, paper and cellulose segments, are evaluating the use of natural resources for economic development, in terms of methodologies application for environment evaluation. Based on an explore research with companies from the segments previously defined in an intentional sampling and through a case study, it was possible to understand enterprise behavior according to the existing level of knowledge internalized on evaluation methodologies, to go deeper on an analysis of the premises and of the basis of the methodologies in an environmental accounting project of a paper and cellulose segment industry.

Este estudo analisa oito dimensões do currículo, da prática pedagógica e da avaliação, no ano letivo de 2004, em duas turmas de alfabetização de escolas públicas de Porto Alegre – uma Estadual e outra Municipal. O processo de alfabetização numa escola organizada por Séries é comparado com o realizado na escola organizada por Ciclos de Formação. Os resultados encontrados nestas duas práticas são comparados com os resultados obtidos numa prática de alfabetização investigada em 1984 (Veit, 1990), na mesma Escola Estadual. Esta investigação foi baseada na teoria do sociólogo Basil Bernstein (1996, 1998) e inspirada nas definições operacionais de uma pesquisa realizada em Lisboa por Morais et al. (1993). A comparação entre os três contextos educacionais apresentou diferenças acentuadas entre as ideologias de um e de outro sistema de ensino, sendo possível distinguir, na Escola Estadual, uma modalidade de Pedagogia Visível e, na Escola Municipal, uma Pedagogia Invisível.

Esta dissertação analisar gestão de marketing no agronegócio, especificamente no contexto da Associação dos Produtores de Soja e Milho do Estado de Mato Grosso (Aprosoja/MT); trata-se de uma iniciativa que pode ser considerada um novo perfil de liderança no sistema cooperativista. O problema de pesquisa é identificar quais são os fundamentos da gestão de marketing da Aprosoja/MT. Para isso, foi realizado um estudo de caso único, com finalidade exploratória e enfoque qualitativo. Durante a coleta de dados, além da análise documental, foram realizadas vinte entrevistas pessoais, primeiramente utilizando o método da teoria fundamentada, para posterior elaboração de um roteiro semiestruturado. Os relatos das entrevistas e o estudo de caso foram interpretados tomando por base o referencial teórico proporcionado por autores como Kotler, Levy, Vargo, Lusch, Zylbersztajn, Bialoskorski e Tejon, dentre outros estudiosos das áreas da lógica dominante de serviços (LDS), do marketing de relacionamento e do marketing do agronegócio. Os resultados da pesquisa indicam que a Aprosoja/MT tem uma visão e entendimento bastante avançados sobre os conceitos mais modernos do campo do marketing, não se restringindo ao marketing tático. Dessa forma, pode-se concluir que a Aprosoja/MT opera no nível estratégico do marketing, com forte orientação para o marketing de relacionamento. É possível afirmar que a gestão de marketing da Aprosoja/MT está fundamentada no relacionamento com seus stakeholders, em função do modelo da LDS.

Customer participation has been studied for decades; however, it gained a postmodern perspective around the year 2000. Customers have become co-creators of personalized experiences, moving from the audience to the stage. In the educational context, students must take responsibility for their learning process and participate in the production of the service. This changing is providing opportunities and challenges for higher education institutions (HEIs) to redefine their relationship with stakeholders, especially with students. This study is based on the service dominant logic (SDL) perspective because students are assumed to take the role of co-creators of knowledge in the educational setting. The research uses adapted frameworks and concepts applied in organizational, knowledge-intensive business services (KIBS) and also medical studies to advance the understanding of value co-creation in the HEI context. The current study addresses a lack of research in the higher education context focusing on defining students’ participation and students’ empowerment in higher education context. An empirical investigation was developed with traditional schools in Brazil. This investigation allowed the description of the constructs in the specific context. The description of student participation in HEIs context reflects the relevance of three dimensions – information sharing, personal interaction and responsible behavior. In the Brazilian context, responsible behavior is the weakest dimension in the construct, because the responsibilities are unbalanced between students and professors. The main reasons identified for this unbalanced relation were cultural issues and local regulation. Student empowerment was described as composed by four dimensions – meaningfulness, competence, impact and choice; however, one of them – choice – was identified as the weakest dimension, facing cultural and bureaucratic barriers for implementation in the Brazilian educational context. Moreover, interviewees spontaneously cited the idea of trust in the faculty as an important antecedent of student participation that must be considered when analyzing student participation and empowerment mechanisms. An additional contribution was the proposal of a theory-based framework for understanding the service dominant logic perspective in the HEI context, in which student participation and student empowerment were explored as mechanisms leading to positive student behavior toward institution.

O monitoramento da qualidade do solo pelos atributos físicos é importante para a avaliação e manutenção da sustentabilidade dos sistemas agrícolas. Um atributo indicador da qualidade do solo deve ser sensível às variações do manejo ao qual está sendo submetido. Este estudo teve como objetivo avaliar o parâmetro S como indicador da qualidade física do solo e a agregação de um Latossolo Vermelho distrófico, submetido a sistemas de manejo sem ou com a inclusão de plantas de cobertura em pré-safra durante 11 anos. Os tratamentos foram: sistema convencional (SC) e sistemas conservacionistas compostos por plantas de cobertura, crotalária (SDC), milheto (SDM) e lablabe (SDL). O delineamento experimental foi o de blocos casualizados, com quatro tratamentos e seis repetições; as camadas constituíram-se nas parcelas subdivididas. Os sistemas conservacionistas SDC, SDM e SDL apresentaram maior teor de matéria orgânica em relação ao SC nas camadas de 0 a 0,05 m. Maiores valores de diâmetro médio ponderado e geométrico dos agregados foram observados nos sistemas conservacionistas. O solo apresentou boa qualidade física determinada pelo índice S, com valores todos superiores a 0,035.
