O objetivo deste artigo é abordar a questão das vivências na perspectiva de L.S. Vigotski, tratando de suas fontes epistemológicas, de suas raízes na língua russa e de seus sentidos específicos, priorizando "A Tragédia do Hamlet, Príncipe da Dinamarca" (1916) e os textos pedológicos dos anos 1930, com destaque para "A questão do meio na pedologia". Destacam-se as transformações das ideias do autor sobre vivências e sua contribuição metodológica à  análise da relação indivíduo-meio no desenvolvimento humano, articulada aos conceitos de consciência e sistema.

Este artigo visa explicitar as concepções freudiana e husserliana de “vivência” (Erlebnis). Por “vivência” entende-se genericamente um tipo fundamental de experiência do mundo. Esse tema, ainda que não diretamente explorado por Freud, tornou-se necessário em sua teoria desde a descoberta da etiologia da histeria no início dos anos 1890 à luz do método catártico: a da vivência traumática. Por outro lado, Husserl, a partir do problema filosófico de garantir a possibilidade do conhecimento universal e necessário, se viu obrigado a combater o naturalismo das ideias, em 1900, e o naturalismo da consciência, em 1913, em ambos os casos partindo de uma análise das vivências (intencionais). Mostrarei que a abordagem freudiana (natural-científica) visa explicar metapsicologicamente a vivência, ao passo que a abordagem husserliana pretende descrever a estrutura da vivência (intencional). Por fim, apontarei para algumas das grandes diferenças entre ambas as abordagens desse tema.

The political capital invested in Australia's engagement with Asia over the past decade has sparked a lively discussion in the Australian academic community. The back cover of the book under review suggests that there are 'few bigger contemporary issues facing Australia than its relationship with Asia'. If the volume of scholarly material being produced on this issue is any indication, they are right. Like a number of similar works covering the shift in Australian foreign, defence, and trade policies towards Asia over the last decade, this book acknowledges a particular debt of gratitude to the Keating government for establishing regional engagement at the forefront of our national consciousness. Unlike some others however, this book seeks to place Australia's more recent 'discovery' of Asia into a broader historical framework.

Two hundred long-term cannabis users (58% male) were interviewed on their characteristics and experience of use. Respondents had been regularly using cannabis for an average of 11 years and more than half used daily (56%). The most common route of administration was in a waterpipe, and nearly all (93%) smoked the flowering heads ot the plant. One in 5 (21%) had a cannabis-related conviction. The benefits of use were perceived to be its relaxing, mood-enhancing effects, and its ability to alter consciousness. The most commonly cited negative aspects of use were cost, negative psychological effects and legal status. Polydrug use was common, with alcohol and tobacco almost universally used on a regular basis. More than half the drinkers in the sample were consuming alcohol at hazardous or harmful levels.

This qualitative study explored how influences on recreational physical activity (RPA) were patterned by socioeconomic position. Face-to-face interviews were conducted with 10 males and 10 females in three socioeconomic groups (N = 60). Influences salient across all groups included previous opportunities, physical health, social assistance, safety, environmental aesthetics and urban design, physical and health benefits, and barriers of self-consciousness, low skill, and weather/time of year. Influences more salient to the high socioeconomic group included social benefits, achieving a balanced lifestyle, and the barrier of an unpredictable lifestyle. Influences more salient to the high and mid socioeconomic groups included efficacy, perceived need, activity demands, affiliation, emotional benefits, and the barrier of competing demands. Influences more salient to the low socioeconomic group included poor health and barriers of inconvenient access and low personal functioning. Data suggest that efforts to increase RPA in the population should include both general and socioeconomically targeted strategies.

Reflexivity involves turning one's reflexive gaze oil discourse-turning language back on itself to see the Work it does in constituting the world. The subject/researcher sees simultaneously the object of her or his gaze and the means by which the object (which may include oneself as subject) is being constituted. The consciousness of self that reflexive writing sometimes entails may be seen to slip inadvertently into constituting the very (real) self that seems to contradict a focus on the constitutive power of discourse. This article explores this site of slippage and of ambivalence. In a collective biography oil the topic of reflexivity, the authors tell and write stories about reflexivity and in a doubled reflexive arc, examine themselves at work during the workshop. Examining their own memories and reflexive practices, they explore this place of slippage and provide theoretical and practical insight into what is going on in reflexive research and writing.

The present study prospectively recorded the circumstances, incidence, mechanisms, injury detection and presentation of concussion in Rugby League. Forty-three consecutive concussions were recorded over three competitive seasons in 175 professional Rugby League players. Data showed (i) the incidence of concussion ranged from 5.9 to 9.8 injuries/1000 player hours across grades - except when age-group players were mismatched (18.4); (ii) 'head-high tackles' accounted for a significant number of concussions; (iii) concussion rarely involved a loss of consciousness with the most common indicators of concussion being amnesia, headache and unsteadiness, with the mechanism of injury often missed; and (iv) concussion often occurs concurrently with other injuries. Concussion (including repeated episodes) is a common injury in Rugby League. Systematic mental status questioning is warranted whenever concussion is suspected. Coaches, trainers and players need more education in the recognition and management of concussion. Stricter penalties for illegal 'head-high' tackling are strongly recommended.

This paper explores differences between men and women in levels of work satisfaction, employing data from the Australian component of the International Project on Class Structure and Class Consciousness. While moment tend to be concentrated in low-status, low-paid positions, that is the secondary labour market, the data suggest that, in general, they are more satisfied with paid employment than men. Employment constraints are found to be a key factor in the observed differences in levels of work satisfaction. For both groups, however, it is clear that work satisfaction derives primarily from work-related factors.

Introduction: mild head trauma (MHT) is defined as a transient neurological deficit after trauma with a history of impairment or loss of consciousness lasting less than 15 min and/or posttraumatic amnesia, and a Glasgow Coma Scale between 13 and 15 on hospital admission. We evaluated 50 MHT patients 18 months after the trauma, addressing signs and symptoms of post-concussion syndrome, quality of life and the presence of anxiety and depression. We correlate those findings with the S100B protein levels and cranial CT scan performed at hospital admission after the trauma. Method: patients were asked to fill out questionnaires to assess quality of life (SF36), anxiety and depression (HADS), and signs and symptoms of post-concussion syndrome. For the control group, we asked the patient`s household members, who had no history of head trauma of any type, to answer the same questionnaires for comparison. Results: total quality of life index for patients with MHT was 58.16 (+/-5), lower than the 73.47 (+/-4) presented by the control group. Twenty patients (55.2%) and four (11.1%) controls were depressed. Seventeen patients (47.2%) presented anxiety, whereas only eight (22.2%) controls were considered anxious. Victims of MHT complained more frequently of loss of balance, dry mouth, pain in the arms, loss of memory and dizziness than their respective controls (p < 0.05). We found no correlation between the presence of these signs and symptoms, quality of life, presence of anxiety and depression with S100B protein levels or with presence of injury in the cranial CT performed at hospital admission. Conclusion: MHT is associated with a higher incidence of post-concussion syndrome symptoms, lower quality of life and anxiety than their respective controls even 18 months after the trauma. Neurological findings in a three-year-old child with meroacrania provide new insights into how the nervous system develops and functions in the absence of superior levels of control from the time of origin. The girl is the first child of a non-consanguineous white Brazilian couple, born at term, weighing 2650 g and measuring 44 cm in length. Upon examination at 43 months, she had quadriplegia, global hypotonia with occasional body hypertonia in a decorticate posture, hyperreflexia, ankle clonus, and extensor plantar response. This case allowed us to verify that, in the absence of upper structures and subcortical nuclei, there are clear signs that suggest corticospinal primacy in motor functions without a substitute pathway. Sound orientation responses suggest the independence of the vestibular-acoustic-ocular system, and manifestations of responsiveness to the environment raise questions about consciousness. Background and Purpose-Diagnostic delay of cerebral vein and dural sinus thrombosis may have an impact on outcome. Methods-In the International Study on Cerebral Vein and Dural Sinus Thrombosis (ISCVT) cohort (624 patients with cerebral vein and dural sinus thrombosis), we analyzed the predictors and the impact on outcome of diagnostic delay. Primary outcome was a modified Rankin Scale score > 2 at the end of follow-up. Secondary outcomes were modified Rankin Scale score 0 to 1 at the end of follow-up, death, and visual deficits (visual acuity or visual field). Results-Median delay was 7 days (interquartile range, 3 to 16). Patients with disturbance of consciousness (P < 0.001) and of mental status (P = 0.042), seizure (< 0.001), and with parenchymal lesions on admission CT/MR (P < 0.001) were diagnosed earlier, whereas men (P = 0.01) and those with isolated intracranial hypertension syndrome (P = 0.04) were diagnosed later. Between patients diagnosed earlier and later than the median delay, no statistically significant differences were found in the primary (P = 0.33) and in secondary outcomes: modified Rankin Scale score 0 to 1 (P = 0.86) or deaths (P = 0.53). Persistent visual deficits were more frequent in patients diagnosed later (P = 0.05). In patients with isolated intracranial hypertension syndrome, modified Rankin Scale score > 2 at the end of follow-up was more frequent in patients diagnosed later (P = 0.02). Conclusions-Diagnostic delay was considerable in this cohort and was associated with an increased risk of visual deficit. In patients with isolated intracranial hypertension syndrome, diagnostic delay was also associated with death or dependency. (Stroke. 2009; 40: 3133-3138.)

In cattle, a neurological lesion similar to that produced in sheep and goats by Clostridium perfringens type D enterotoxaemia has been reported. However, no causal relationship has been established between this disease and the lesion in cattle. The effects of single and multiple intravenous injections of epsilon toxin in three calves aged 6 months were studied. A further calf was inoculated intravenously with saline solution and used as a control. Epsilon toxin invariably produced neurological signs within 2-60 min of the end of the injection process. Clinical signs consisted of loss of consciousness, recumbency, convulsions, paddling, opisthotonus, hyperaesthesia and dyspnoea. Gross changes consisted of severe acute pulmonary oedema, which was particularly marked in the interlobular septa. The histological lesions consisted of intra-alveolar and interstitial oedema of the lung and variable degrees of perivascular proteinaceous oedema in the internal capsule, thalamus and cerebellar white matter. No clinical or post-mortem changes were observed in the control calf. These results show that calves are susceptible to the intravenous injection of epsilon toxin, and that they can show at least some of the histological lesions produced in sheep and goats by this toxin. Are humans alone in their ability to reminisce about the past and imagine the future? Recent evidence suggests that food-storing birds (scrub jays) have access to information about what they have stored where and when. This has raised the possibility of mental time travel (MTT) in animals and sparked similar research with other species. Here we caution that such data do not provide convincing evidence for MTT. Examination of characteristics of human MTT (e.g. non-verbal declaration, generativity, developmental prerequisites) points to other avenues as to how a case for animal MTT could be made. In light of the current lack of evidence, however, we maintain that MTT is a uniquely human characteristic.

Realizamos uma análise da atividade da Consciência Infeliz (unglücklichesBewusstsein), tal como foi exposta por G.W.F. Hegel em sua obraFenomenologia do Espírito(PhänomenologiedesGeistes), de 1807.A Consciência Infeliz é uma denominação hegeliana referente a uma consciência religiosa que se cinde em duas; um destes seus lados, ela aliena de si e tem por sua essência que reside no além, o Imutável; ao outro lado, ela mesma, assevera como o Mutável, inessente, residente no aquém. Toda a sua atividade resume-se a unir isto que ela põe como o infinitamente desunido, a saber, ela e sua essência, pois a consciência ainda não é ciente de que esta essência absoluta que ela opôs a si mesma nada mais é do que ela mesma. Isto resulta num tender singular para seu objeto Universal absoluto e ao mesmo tempo não querer maculá-lo com esta sua singularidade; numa atividade que deve absolutamente ser e não-ser, busca de algo que não pode nem deve ser buscado. Enquanto herdeira do pensamento estóico e cético, a Consciência Infeliz aparece como consciência contraditória, curvada sobre si mesma e sempre dolorida, que além de efetivar um movimento de negação para com o mundo do aquém e tudo o que lhe diz respeito, busca se libertar da dor que é ser portadora desta contraditoriedade que surge justamente daquela sua atitude negativa. A fim de que possamos fundamentar esta atitude Infeliz, realizamos em nosso primeiro capítulo uma investigação acerca de suas características peculiares nas esferas anteriores ao seu aparecimento, a saber, a esfera do Entendimento (Verstand), a dialética do Senhor e do Escravo e do Estoicismo e Ceticismo. No segundo capítulo, discorremos acerca do conceito e da atividade da Consciência Infeliz, bem como procuramos investigar a necessidade de sua superação a partir de uma análise de sua suprassunção no momento da Razão (Vernunft). Por fim, em nosso terceiro e último capítulo, procuramos refletir sobre em que medida se poderia afirmar que as consciências contemporâneas continuam agindo de maneira infeliz, e para tanto, nos apoiamos em breves leituras de S. Freud, pensador do ―mal-estar‖ moderno e Z.Bauman, pensador do ―mal-estar‖ contemporâneo.

Esta dissertação parte das bases da crítica de Gadamer à consciência estética desde o contexto de fundamentação das ciências naturais e decorrente estabelecimento das ciências humanas. Considerando o posicionamento contrário de Gadamer quanto ao predomínio dos métodos das ciências naturais em todos os âmbitos da experiência humana no mundo, nosso esforço será no sentido de abordar a compreensão da experiência estética. Neste sentido, nos voltaremos para a aisthesis com vistas a caminhar focando na problemática em torno da arte a partir de Platão e Aristóteles, culminando no estabelecimento da estética como campo específico do saber filosófico no pensamento iluminista de Baumgarten. Destarte, o presente escrito voltar-se-á para as bases da consciência estética que se encontram na subjetivação decorrente dos efeitos do pensamento crítico de Kant. Com isso, abordaremos as perspectivas de Gadamer com vistas a liberar a experiência da arte do âmbito da consciência estética, o que, segundo este filósofo, pode ocorrer a partir da assunção de um tipo de experiência que pode ser tomado como verdade mesmo não estando restrito aos métodos das ciências naturais. Partindo desta prerrogativa,Gadamer lança mão da noção de jogo como experiência fora da centralidade subjetiva. Com o redirecionamento da experiência, o fenômeno artístico pode aparecer como parte constitutiva da experiência existencial humana sem estar restrito às faculdades subjetivas.
