The Sillon du Talbert is a natural thin 3-km long tongue made of "galets" (pebbles about 5 to 20 cm) and sand. It is located at the tip of a peninsula between the estuaries of the rivers Jaudy (Le Jaudy) and Trieux (Le Trieux) next to Ile de Bre´hat. At the end of the Sillon, there is an archipel of small islands and rocks called "Archipel d'Ollone" (Ollone archipel), also called the Talbert islands (Iles de Talbert) by the locals. The Sillon du Talbert (or Sillon de Talbert) is an important reserve of flora and fauna. The Sillon was damaged by locals using stones for construction until 1928, and by the Germans, who used stones for the Ile Blanche bunker system construction in 1943 as part of the WWII Atlantic wall. Demonic Possession and Exorcism in Early Modern France

This is a highly original study of possession by demons and their exorcism, which was rife in early modern times, focussing on the place where they were most prevalent, France. Catholics at the time believed that the devil was present everywhere, in the rise of the heretics, in the activities of witches, and even in the bodies of the pious young women. The rite of exorcism was intended to heal the possessed and show the power of the church - but it generated as many problems as it resolved. Possessed nuns endured frequently violent exorcisms, exorcists were suspected of conjuring devils, and possession itself came to be seen as a form of holiness, elevating several women to the status of living saints. The structure of worker compensation in Brazil, with a comparison to France and the United States

We employ comprehensive linked employer-employee data for Brazil to analyze wage determinants and compare results to Abowd et al. (2001) for French and U.S. manufacturing. While returns to human capita in Brazilian manufacturing exceed those of the other countries, occupation and gender differentials are similar. The worker-characteristics component accounts for much of the greater wage inequality in Brazil, but the establishment-fixed component has scant explanatory power. Thus, firm-or industry-level factors offer little scope for explaining the differences in wage inequality. Brazil`s wage structure resembles that of France, a country with some similarity in labor market institutions.

Aluminum Concentrations in Water of Elderly People`s Houses and Retirement Homes and Its Relation with Elderly Health

The purpose of this study was to determine the concentrations of aluminum (Al) and other metals in water samples from elderly people`s houses and retirement homes. Forty-six duplicate water samples from kitchen taps were collected in Ribeiro Preto/SP, Brazil. Metal levels were measured by atomic absorption spectrophotometer. Aluminum concentration exceeded the maximum allowed values in 26% of samples according to the Decree 518/2004 of the Brazilian Health Ministry. It was noted that 11% of elderly living at monitored houses, as well as 19% living at retirement homes presented Alzheimer disease diagnostic. These results suggest taking into account Al risks among vulnerable elderly population groups.

The Relative Frequency of the Synthetic End Composite Futures in the Newspaper Quest-France and some Observations on Distribution

Figures on the relative frequency of synthetic and composite future forms in Ouest-France are presented and compared with those of earlier studies on the passé simple and passé composé. The synthetic future is found to be dominant. Possible formal explanations for distribution are found to be inconclusive. Distribution across different text-types is found to be more promising, since contrastive functions of the two forms can be identified in texts where they co-occur. The composite future typically reports new proposals or plans as current news, while the synthetic future outlines details that will be realised at the time of implementation. Both functions are important in dailies, but current news is more often expressed in the present tense at the expense of the composite future.

Influência do tipo de parto e do sexo no desempenho e nas características da carcaça de cordeiros cruza Ile de France x Texel

O experimento foi realizado no Setor de Ovinocultura do Departamento de Zootecnia da Universidade Federal de Santa Maria (UFSM), com o objetivo de avaliar o efeito do tipo de parto e do sexo sobre o desempenho e as características da carcaça de cordeiros cruza Ile de France x Texel. Foram utilizados 12 cordeiros não castrados e seis cordeiras. O delineamento experimental adotado foi o inteiramente casualizado, com seis repetições. Os tratamentos foram: cordeiros de parto simples, cordeiros de parto duplo e cordeiras de parto duplo. O ganho de peso médio diário do nascimento aos 21 dias dos cordeiros de parto simples foi superior (P < 0,05) em relação aos cordeiros e cordeiras de parto duplo. Entretanto, após a fase inicial de amamentação, em que o leite deixa de ser o principal componente da dieta, verificou-se que os cordeiros de parto simples apresentaram desempenho semelhante ao dos de parto duplo. Os cordeiros tiveram ganho de peso superior (P < 0,05) aos das cordeiras após os 42 dias de vida. As características da carcaça de cordeiros de parto simples e cordeiros e cordeiras de parto duplo são similares, com exceção do peso de carcaças quente e fria e do comprimento interno de carcaça e perna, em que o dos machos são superiores ao das fêmeas.

Performance of european socially responsible funds during market crises: evidence from France

This paper investigates the performance, investment styles andmanagerial abilities of French socially responsible investment (SRI) funds investing in Europe during crisis and non-crisis periods. Our results show that SRI funds significantly underperformcharacteristics-matched conventional funds during non-crisis periods, but match the performance of their peers duringmarket downturns. The underperformance of SRI funds during good economic states is driven by funds that use negative screens, since funds that use only positive screens performsimilarly to conventional funds across differentmarket conditions. SRI and conventional funds showsignificant differences in risk exposures during non-crisis periods but exhibit much more similar investment styles during crises. Furthermore,we find little evidence of significant differences inmanagerial abilities during bad economic states. Yet, during non-crisis periods, SRI and conventional fund managers exhibit significantly different style-timing abilities and these differences are also related to screening strategies.

Activités d’écriture approchée et entrée dans l’écrit des jeunes enfants: analyse comparative de démarches didactiques en première primaire en france

Nous présentons le suivi d’une cohorte d’élèves, de la grande section (troisième année de maternelle en France -5 ans) à la fin du CE1 (deuxième année de primaire –7/8 ans). La population est constituée d’un groupe contrôle et d’un groupe expérimental pratiquant des séances hebdomadaires d’écriture approchée, observées et filmées à différentes périodes de l’année (octobre, mars et juin). Dans notre contribution, nous analysons les séances filmées en fin de CP (première primaire), dans une perspective essentiellement comparatiste. L’objectif est de décrire la démarche didactique mise en œuvre par les enseignantes lors de séances d’enseignement de l’écriture. L'analyse des productions d'écrit et des verbalisations des élèves nous permet également d'évaluer ces démarches d’enseignement et de caractériser celle qui semble le plus propice au développement de compétences métalinguistiques des apprentis scripteurs
