The effect of plasma taken from normotensive humans, while on a low and high sodium diet, on [Na + K]-ATPase and 3H-ouabain binding was measured in tubules from guinea-pig kidneys. Plasma from the high sodium, compared to the low sodium, diet period: (a) inhibited [Na + K]-ATPase activity; (b) decreased 3H-ouabain affinity for binding sites; (c) increased the number of available 3H-ouabain binding sites; (d) decreased [Na + K]-ATPase turnover (activity/3H-ouabain binding sites). The inhibition of [Na + K]-ATPase suggests an increase in a (possible) natriuretic factor. The decreased affinity of 3H-ouabain binding suggests an endogenous ouabainoid, which may be the natriuretic factor.

Construction and demolition (C&D) waste occupies the largest share of overall waste generation in many countries. However, waste management practices and outcomes may differ between countries. For instance, in Australia, C&D waste recovery is continuously improving during the last years but the amount of C&D waste increases every year, as there has been little improvement in waste avoidance and minimization. In contrast, in Germany, waste generation remains constant over many years despite the continuous economic growth. The waste recycling rate in Germany is one of the highest in the world. However, most waste recycled is from demolition work rather than from waste generated during new construction. In addition, specific laws need to be developed to further reduce landfill of non-recycled waste. Despite of the differences, C&D waste generation and recovery in both countries depend on the effectiveness of the statutory framework, which regulates their waste management practices. This is an issue in other parts of the world as well. Therefore countries can learn from each other to improve their current statutory framework for C&D waste management. By taking Germany and Australia as an example, possible measures to improve current practices of C&D waste management through better statutory tools are identified in this paper. After providing an overview of the statutory framework of both countries and their status in waste generation and recovery, a SWOT analysis is conducted to identify strengths, weaknesses, opportunities and threats of the statutory tools. Recommendations to improve the current statutory frameworks, in order to achieve less waste generation and more waste recovery in the construction industry are provided for the German and Australian government and they can also be transferred to other countries.

The adequacy of the UV Index (UVI), a simple measure of ambient solar ultraviolet (UV) radiation, has been questioned on the basis of recent scientific data on the importance of vitamin D for human health, the mutagenic capacity of radiation in the UVA wavelength, and limitations in the behavioral impact of the UVI as a public awareness tool. A working group convened by ICNIRP and WHO met to assess whether modifications of the UVI were warranted and to discuss ways of improving its effectiveness as a guide to healthy sun-protective behavior. A UV Index greater than 3 was confirmed as indicating ambient UV levels at which harmful sun exposure and sunburns could occur and hence as the threshold for promoting preventive messages. There is currently insufficient evidence about the quantitative relationship of sun exposure, vitamin D, and human health to include vitamin D considerations in sun protection recommendations. The role of UVA in sunlight-induced dermal immunosuppression and DNA damage was acknowledged, but the contribution of UVA to skin carcinogenesis could not be quantified precisely. As ambient UVA and UVB levels mostly vary in parallel in real life situations, any minor modification of the UVI weighting function with respect to UVA-induced skin cancer would not be expected to have a significant impact on the UV Index. Though it has been shown that the UV Index can raise awareness of the risk of UV radiation to some extent, the UVI does not appear to change attitudes to sun protection or behavior in the way it is presently used. Changes in the UVI itself were not warranted based on these findings, but rather research testing health behavior models, including the roles of self-efficacy and self-affirmation in relation to intention to use sun protection among different susceptible groups, should be carried out to develop more successful strategies toward improving sun protection behavior. This article focuses on problem solving activities in a first grade classroom in a typical small community and school in Indiana. But, the teacher and the activities in this class were not at all typical of what goes on in most comparable classrooms; and, the issues that will be addressed are relevant and important for students from kindergarten through college. Can children really solve problems that involve concepts (or skills) that they have not yet been taught? Can children really create important mathematical concepts on their own – without a lot of guidance from teachers? What is the relationship between problem solving abilities and the mastery of skills that are widely regarded as being “prerequisites” to such tasks? Can primary school children (whose toolkits of skills are limited) engage productively in authentic simulations of “real life” problem solving situations? Can three-person teams of primary school children really work together collaboratively, and remain intensely engaged, on problem solving activities that require more than an hour to complete? Are the kinds of learning and problem solving experiences that are recommended (for example) in the USA’s Common Core State Curriculum Standards really representative of the kind that even young children encounter beyond school in the 21st century? … This article offers an existence proof showing why our answers to these questions are: Yes. Yes. Yes. Yes. Yes. Yes. And: No. … Even though the evidence we present is only intended to demonstrate what’s possible, not what’s likely to occur under any circumstances, there is no reason to expect that the things that our children accomplished could not be accomplished by average ability children in other schools and classrooms.

MesoLite, a zeolite material manufactured by NanoChem Holdings Pty Ltd is made by caustic reaction of kaolin at temperatures between 80-95°C. This material has a moderate surface area (9~12 m2/g) and very high cation exchange capacity (500meq/100g). To measure the availability of K in K-MesoLite to plants, wheat was grown with K-MesoLite or a soluble fertiliser (e.g. KCl) in non-leached pots in a glasshouse. The weights and elemental compositions of the plants were compared after four weeks growth. Plants grown with K-MesoLite were slightly larger than those grown with KCl. The elemental compositions of the plants were similar except for Si, which was significantly higher in the plants grown with K-MesoLite than in those fertilised with KCl. K from K-MesoLite is readily available to plants.

Smartphones are getting increasingly popular and several malwares appeared targeting these devices. General countermeasures to smartphone malwares are currently limited to signature-based antivirus scanners which efficiently detect known malwares, but they have serious shortcomings with new and unknown malwares creating a window of opportunity for attackers. As smartphones become host for sensitive data and applications, extended malware detection mechanisms are necessary complying with the corresponding resource constraints. The contribution of this paper is twofold. First, we perform static analysis on the executables to extract their function calls in Android environment using the command readelf. Function call lists are compared with malware executables for classifying them with PART, Prism and Nearest Neighbor Algorithms. Second, we present a collaborative malware detection approach to extend these results. Corresponding simulation results are presented.

Background: Extracorporeal circulation (ECC), the diversion of blood flow through a circuit located outside of the body, has been one of the major advances in modern medicine. Cardio-pulmonary bypass (CPB), renal dialysis, apheresis and extracorporeal membrane oxygenation (ECMO) are all different forms of ECC. Despite its major benefits, when blood comes into contact with foreign material, both the coagulation and inflammation cascades are activated simultaneously. Short periods of exposure to ECC e.g. CPB (2 h duration), are known to be associated with haemolysis, coagulopathies, bleeding and inflammation which demand blood product support. Therefore, it is not unexpected that these complications would be exaggerated with prolonged periods of ECC such as in ECMO (days to weeks duration). The variability and complexities of the underlying pathologies of patients requiring ECC makes it difficult to study the cause and effect of these complications. To overcome this problem we developed an ovine (sheep) model of ECC. Method: Healthy female sheep (1–3 y.o.) weighing 40–50 kg were fasted overnight, anaesthetised, intubated and ventilated [1]. Half the group received smoke induced acute lung injury (S-ALI group) (n = 8) and the other half did not (healthy group) (n = 8). Sheep were subsequently cannulated (Medtronic Inc, Minneapolis, MN, USA) and veno-venous ECMO commenced using PLS ECMO circuit and Quadrox D oxygenator (Maquet Cardiopulmonary AG, Hechinger Straße, Germany). There was continuous physiological monitoring and blood was collected at specified time intervals for full blood counts, platelet function analysis (by Multiplate®), routine coagulation and assessment of clot formation and lysis (by ROTEM®). Preliminary results Full blood counts and routine coagulation results from normal healthy sheep were comparable to those of normal human adults. Within 15 min of initiating of ECMO, PT, PTT and EXTEM clot formation time increased, whilst EXTEM maximum clot firmness decreased in both cohorts. Discussion & Conclusions: Preliminary results of sheep from both 2 h ECMO cohorts showed that the anatomy, haematology and coagulation parameters of an adult sheep are comparable to that a human adult. Experiments are currently underway with healthy (n = 8) and S-ALI (n = 8) sheep on ECMO for 24 h. In addition to characterising how ECMO alters haematology and coagulation parameters, we hope that it will also define which blood components will be most effective to correct bleeding or clotting complications during ECMO support.

This research was undertaken on phosphophyllite sample from the Hagendorf Süd pegmatite, Bavaria, Germany. Chemical analysis was carried out by Scanning Electron Microscope in the EDS mode and indicates a zinc and iron phosphate with partial substitution of manganese, which partially replaced iron. The calculated chemical formula of the studied sample was determined to be: Zn2(Fe0.65, Mn0.35)P1.00(PO4)2- 4(H2O). The intense Raman peak at 995 cm1 is assigned to the m1 PO3 4 symmetric stretching mode and the two Raman bands at 1073 and 1135 cm1 to the m3 PO3 4 antisymmetric stretching modes. The m4 PO3 4 bending modes are observed at 505, 571, 592 and 653 cm1 and the m2 PO3 4 bending mode at 415 cm1. The sharp Raman band at 3567 cm1 attributed to the stretching vibration of OH units brings into question the actual formula of phosphophyllite. Vibrational spectroscopy enables an assessment of the molecular structure of phosphophyllite to be assessed.

The phosphate mineral leucophosphite K(Fe2)3þ(PO4)2(OH) · 2H2O has been characterized by SEM-EDS, Raman, and infrared spectro- scopic measurements. The mineral is predominantly a K and Fe phosphate with some minor substitution of Al in the Fe3þ site. Raman bands at 994 and 1058 cm-1 are assigned to the symmetric stretching modes of PO3- and HPO2- units. The Raman bands at 1104, 1135, and 1177 cm-1 are assigned to the PO3- and HPO2- antisymmetric stretching modes. Raman and infrared spectra in the 2600–3800 cm-1 region show a complex set of overlapping bands, which may be resolved into the component bands. The Raman bands observed at 3325, 3355, and 3456 cm-1 are attributed to water stretching vibrations, and in the infrared spectrum, bands at 3237, 3317, and 3453 cm-1 are assigned to water stretching bands.
