The resolution of the SSU rRNA gene for phylogenetic analysis in the diatoms has been evaluated by Theriot et al. who claimed that the SSU rRNA gene could not be used to resolve the monophyly of the three diatoms classes described by Medlin and Kaczmarska. Although they used both only bolidomonads and heterokonts as outgroups, they did not explore outgroups further away than the heterokonts. In this study, the use of the multiple outgroups inside and outside the heterokonts with the rRNA gene for recovering the three monophyletic clades at the class level is evaluated. Trees with multiple outgroups ranging from only bolidophytes to Bacteria and Archea were analyzed with Bayesian and Maximum Likelihood analyses and two data sets were recovered with the classes being monophyletic. Other data sets were analyzed with non-weighted and weighted maximum parsimony. The latter reduced the number of clades and lengthened branch lengths between the clades. One data set using a weighted analysis recovered the three classes as monophyletic. Taking only bolidophytes as the only outgroup never produced monophyletic clades. Multiple outgroups including many heterokonts and certain members of the crown group radiation recovered monophyletic clades. The three classes can be defined by clear morphological differences primarily based on auxospore ontogeny and envelope structure, the presence or absence of a structure (tube process or sternum) associated with the annulus and the location of the cribrum in those genera with loculate areolae. A cladistic analysis of some of these features is presented and recovers the three classes.

The transition from a positivist matrix to an idealistic one in Argentinean academic philosophy can be read as a result of a gradual and problematic pollution. It was, also, heavily traversed by considerations that exceeded the theoretical aspects. Based on the willingness to explore this transit, the article pays attention to one of the episodes of this contamination: how the Revista de Filosofía reads Croce and Gentile’s philosophy. Observing there some possibility of dialogue between positivist assumptions, with which the journal takes a position, and the idealism the article analyze how this dialogue and its limits were given from a political consideration. If the idealism was condemned, it is centrally owed to its performance during the first years of the government of Mussolini. If, meanwhile, it was some to rescue of that philosophy, it was that it contributed to think the revolutionary change.

Recent R-matrix calculations of electron impact excitation rates in N-like Si VIII are used to derive theoretical emission line intensity ratios involving 2s(2)2p(3)-2s2p(4) transitions in the 216 -320 Angstrom wavelength range. A comparison of these with an extensive dataset of solar active region, quiet- Sun, sub-flare and off-limb observations, obtained during rocket flights of the Solar EUV Research Telescope and Spectrograph (SERTS), indicates that the ratio R-1 = I(216.94 Angstrom)/I(319.84 Angstrom) may provide a usable electron density diagnostic for coronal plasmas. The ratio involves two lines of comparable intensity, and varies by a factor of about 5 over the useful density range of 10(8)-10(11) cm(-3). However R-2 = I(276.85 Angstrom)/I(319.84 Angstrom) and R-3 = I(277.05 Angstrom)/I(319.84 Angstrom) show very poor agreement between theory and observation, due to the severe blending of the 276.85 and 277.05 Angstrom lines with Si VII and Mg VII transitions, respectively, making the ratios unsuitable as density diagnostics. The 314.35 Angstrom feature of Si VIII also appears to be blended, with the other species contributing around 20% to the total line flux.

Effective collision strengths for electron-impact excitation of the nitrogen-like ion Si VIII are presented over the wide range of electron temperatures log T(K) = 4.0-6.5. All 231 fine- structure transitions among the 22 fine-structure levels arising from the lowest 11 LS target states (2s(2)2p(3), 2s2p(4), 2p(5), and 2s(2)2p(2)3s) are considered in the tabulation. The collision strengths are evaluated in a multi- channel R-matrix approach, and the corresponding effective collision strengths are obtained by averaging these over a Maxwellian distribution of electron velocities. Comparisons are made with recent distorted-wave results at high incident electron energies. Differences of up to 20% are found, particularly for some allowed transitions. (C) 2003 Elsevier Inc. We report calculations of energy levels, radiative rates and electron impact excitation rates for transitions in H-like N VII, O VIII, F IX, Ne X and Na XI. The general-purpose relativistic atomic structure package (grasp) is adopted for calculating energy levels and radiative rates, while the Dirac atomic R-matrix code (DARC) and the flexible atomic code (FAC) are used for determining the collision strengths and subsequently the excitation rates. Oscillator strengths, radiative rates and line strengths are listed for all E1, E2, M1 and M2 transitions among the lowest 25 levels of the above five ions. Collision strengths have been averaged over a Maxwellian velocity distribution, and the effective collision strengths so obtained are reported over a wide temperature range below 10(7) K. Additionally, lifetimes are also given for all the calculated energy levels of the above five ions.

Aims. In this paper we report on calculations of energy levels, radiative rates, oscillator strengths, line strengths, and effective collision strengths for transitions among the lowest 362 levels of the (1s22s22p6) 3s23p5, 3s3p6, 3s23p43d, 3s3p53d, 3s23p33d2, 3s3p43d2, 3p63d, and 3s23p44 configurations of Cr viii. Methods. The general-purpose relativistic atomic structure package (grasp) and flexible atomic code (fac) are adopted for the calculations. Results. Radiative rates, oscillator strengths, and line strengths are reported for all electric dipole (E1), magnetic dipole (M1), electric quadrupole (E2), and magnetic quadrupole (M2) transitions among the 362 levels. Comparisons are made with earlier available results and the accuracy of the data is assessed. Additionally, lifetimes for all 362 levels are listed, although comparisons with other theoretical results are limited to only a few levels. Our energy levels are estimated to be accurate to better than 3% (within 0.4 Ryd), whereas results for other parameters are probably accurate to better than 20%. Finally, electron impact collision strengths and excitation rates are computed for all transitions over a wide energy (temperature) range. For these calculations, FAC is adopted and results in the form of effective collision strengths are reported over a wide temperature range of 105.0−106.6 K.

A new linear equations method for calculating the R-matrix, which arises in the R-matrix-Floquet theory of multiphoton processes, is introduced. This method replaces the diagonalization of the Floquet Hamiltonian matrix by the solution of a set of linear simultaneous equations which are solved, in the present work, by the conjugate gradient method. This approach uses considerably less computer memory and can be readily ported onto parallel computers. It will thus enable much larger problems of current interest to be treated. This new method is tested by applying it to three-photon ionization of helium at frequencies where double resonances with a bound state and autoionizing states are important. Finally, an alternative linear equations method, which avoids the explicit calculation of the R-matrix by incorporating the boundary conditions directly, is described in an appendix.
