Improvements in the structural performance of glulam timber beams by the inclusion of reinforcing materials can increase both the service performance and ultimate capacity. This paper describes a series of four-point bending tests conducted, under service loads and to failure, on unreinforced, reinforced and post-tensioned glulam timber beams, where the reinforcing tendon used is 12 mm dia. basalt fibre-reinforced polymer. The research is designed to evaluate the benefits offered by including an active reinforcement in contrast to the passive reinforcement typically used within timber strengthening works, in addition to establishing the effect that bonding the reinforcing tendon has on the material's performance. Further experimental tests have also been developed to investigate the long-term implications of this research, with emphasis placed upon creep and loss of post-tensioning; however, this is ongoing and is not presented in this paper. The laboratory investigations establish that the flexural strength and stiffness increase for both the unbonded and bonded post-tensioned timbers compared to the unreinforced and reinforced beams. Timber that is post-tensioned with an unbonded basalt fibre-reinforced polymer tendon shows a flexural strength increase of 2ṡ8% and an increase in stiffness of 8ṡ7%. Post-tensioned beams with a bonded basalt fibre-reinforced polymer tendon show increases in flexural strength and stiffness of 15ṡ4% and 11ṡ5% respectively.

This paper presents a study on the bond behaviour of FRP-concrete bonded joints under static and dynamic loadings, by developing a meso-scale finite element model using the K&C concrete damage model in LS-DYNA. A significant number of single shear experiments under static pull-off loading were modelled with an extensive parametric study covering key factors in the K&C model, including the crack band width, the compressive fracture energy and the shear dilatation factor. It is demonstrated that the developed model can satisfactorily simulate the static debonding behaviour, in terms of mesh objectivity, the load-carrying capacity and the local bond-slip behaviour, provided that proper consideration is given to the selection of crack band width and shear dilatation factor. A preliminary study of the effect of the dynamic loading rate on the debonding behaviour was also conducted by considering a dynamic increase factor (DIF) for the concrete strength as a function of strain rate. It is shown that a higher loading rate leads to a higher load-carrying capacity, a longer effective bond length, and a larger damaged area of concrete in the single shear loading scenario.

As an alternative to externally bonded FRP reinforcement, near-surface mounted (NSM) FRP reinforcement can be used to effectively improve the flexural performance of RC beams. In such FRP strengthened RC beams, end cover separation failure is one of the common failure modes. This failuremode involves the detachment of the NSM FRP reinforcement together with the concrete cover along the level of the tension steel reinforcement. This paper presents a new strength model for end cover separation failure in RC beams strengthened in flexure with NSM FRP strips (i.e. rectangular FRP bars with asectional height-to-thickness ratio not less than 5), which was formulated on the basis of extensive numerical results from a parametric study undertaken using an efficient finite element approach. The proposed strength model consists of an approximate equation for the debonding strain of the FRP reinforcement at the critical cracked section and a conventional section analysis to relate this debondingstrain to the moment acting on the same section (i.e. the debonding strain). Once the debonding strain is known, the load level at end cover separation of an FRP-strengthened RC beam can be easily determined for a given load distribution. Predictions from the proposed strength model are compared with those of two existing strength models of the same type and available test results, which shows that the proposed strength model is in close agreement with test results and is far more accurate than the existing strength models.

Timber engineering has advanced over recent decades to offer an alternative to traditional materials and methods. The bonding of fibre reinforced plastics (FRP) with adhesives to timber structures for repair and strengthening has many advantages. However, the lack of established design rules has strongly restrained the use of FRP strengthening in many situations, where these could be a preferable option to most traditional techniques. A significant body of research has been carried out in recent years on the performance of FRP reinforced timber and engineered wood products. This paper gives a State of the Art summary of material formulations, application areas, design approaches and quality control issues for practical engineers to introduce on-site bonding of FRP to timber as a new way in design for structural repair and rehabilitation.

This paper is concerned with the finite element simulation of debonding failures in FRP-strengthened concrete beams. A key challenge for such simulations is that common solution techniques such as the Newton-Raphson method and the arc-length method often fail to converge. This paper examines the effectiveness of using a dynamic analysis approach in such FE simulations, in which debonding failure is treated as a dynamic problem and solved using an appropriate time integration method. Numerical results are presented to show that an appropriate dynamic approach effectively overcomes the convergence problem and provides accurate predictions of test results.

The technique of externally bonding fiber-reinforced polymer (FRP) composites has become very popular worldwide for retrofitting existing reinforced concrete (RC) structures. Debonding of FRP from the concrete substrate is a typical failure mode in such strengthened structures. The bond behavior between FRP and concrete thus plays a crucial role in these structures. The FRP-to-concrete bond behavior has been extensively investigated experimentally, commonly using a single or double shear test of the FRP-to-concrete bonded joint. Comparatively, much less research has been concerned with numerical simulation, chiefly due to difficulties in the accurate modeling of the complex behavior of concrete. This paper presents a simple but robust finite-element (FE) model for simulating the bond behavior in the entire debonding process for the single shear test. A concrete damage plasticity model is proposed to capture the concrete-to-FRP bond behavior. Numerical results are in close agreement with test data, validating the model. In addition to accuracy, the model has two further advantages: it only requires the basic material parameters (i.e., no arbitrary user-defined parameter such as the shear retention factor is required) and it can be directly implemented in the FE software ABAQUS.

A meso-scale finite element model is presented for investigating the FRP-concrete bond behaviour under static and dynamic loadings. It adopts a local concrete damage model. A large number of single shear tests under static pull-off loading were modeled. In this study, 21 small beam specimens with a pre-set through-crack were tested with FRP strips bonded to the sides to study the bond behavior between shear-strengthening FRP and concrete (referred to as "the interface" for simplicity hereafter). The test parameters included the bond length, width, thickness of FRP strip and the angle between fiber orientation and crack opening direction (referred to as "fiber tensile angle" θ hereafter) on the bond behavior of the interface. Test results showed that: 1) the small beam test setup with a pre-set crack is suitable for studying the bond behavior between FRP and concrete; 2) the bond length, width, and thickness of the FRP as well as the fiber angle have significant effects on the bond strength; 3) the distribution of FRP strains along the direction perpendicular to the fiber orientation (FRP width direction) is non-uniform; this is mainly attributed to the progressive debonding of the FRP strips in the width direction, with the FRP at the location of larger crack width debonding earlier.

Externally bonding of FRP composites is an effective technique for retrofitting historical masonry arch structures. A major failure mode in such strengthened structures is the debonding of FRP from the masonry. The bond behaviour between FRP and masonry thus plays a crucial role in these structures. Major challenges exist in the finite element modelling of such structures, such as modelling of mixed Mode-I and Mode-II bond behaviour between the FRP and the curved masonry substrate, modelling of existing damages in the masonry arches, consideration of loading history in the unstrengthened and strengthened structure etc. This paper presents a rigorous FE model for simulating FRP strengthened masonry arch structures. A detailed solid model was developed for simulating the masonry and a mixed-mode interface model was used for simulating the FRP-to-masonry bond behaviour. The model produces results in very close agreement with test results.

Existing studies have shown conclusively that the measured fibre reinforced polymer (FRP) rupture strain in FRP wrapped concrete columns is usually significantly smaller than the rupture strain obtained from flat coupon tests. One of the main causes for this phenomenon is the existence of geometrical discontinuities at both ends of the FRP sheets. This study proposes a new strengthening method in which continuous FRP spiral wrapping is used to eliminate strain concentrations due to the geometrical discontinuities and thus increase the FRP rupture strain at column failure. The effect of the spiral angle of FRP on the FRP rupture strain in FRP wrapped specimens was experimentally investigated. The test results indicate that the spiral wrapping with a small angle with respect to the column circumference can significantly increase the strain efficiency of FRP and thus enhance the axial compression capacity of the strengthened cylinders.

Strengthening reinforced concrete (RC) structures by externally bonded FRP composites has been widely used for static loading and seismic retrofitting since 1990s. More recently many studies on strengthening concrete and masonry structures with externally bonded FRP for improved blast and impact resistance in protective engineering have also been conducted. The bond behaviour between the FRP and concrete plays a critical role in a strengthening system with externally bonded FRP. However, the understanding of how the bond between FRP and concrete performs under high strain rate is severely limited. Due to the dynamic characteristics of blast and impact loading, the bond behaviour between FRP and concrete under such loading is very different from that under static loading. This paper presents a study on the dynamic bond-slip behaviour based on both the numerical analysis and test results. A dynamic bond-slip model is proposed in this paper.
