EXTRACT (SEE PDF FOR FULL ABSTRACT): Since 1986, the U.S. Geological Survey and National Weather Service have operated a warning system for debris flows triggered by severe rainstorms in the San Francisco Bay region. The NWS tracks storm systems as they approach the region, forecasts precipitation, and observes rainfall with a network of radiotelemetered rain gauges (ALERT). The USGS also monitors ALERT data and compares the observed and forecast rainfall to thresholds for debris-flow initiation. Both groups jointly assess debris-flow hazards and issue public advisories when rainfall conditions reach or approach critical levels.

EXTRACT (SEE PDF FOR FULL ABSTRACT): The 1977 climate shift was characterized by low chlorophyll a concentrations and a shift in phytoplankton community composition throughout the upper San Francisco Bay estuary. ... For climate to be a driving force in phytoplankton communities, it must affect mechanisms that control biomass and community composition. The influence of climate on environmental conditions and phytoplankton community composition among water-year types was examined using 19 years of physical, chemical, and phytoplankton data collected monthly at 15 stations throughout the estuary.

The rotifer Brachionus plicatilis plays an important role in prawn hatcheries. It tolerates a wide range of salinities. The present experiments were conducted to find the optimum salinity for its mass culture. Experiments conducted on various ranges of salinities starting from 0 to 40 ppt at an interval of 5 ppt revealed that Brachionus plicatilis did not survive at salinities 0 and 40 ppt. Optimum salinity studies conducted at 5-15 ppt with an interval of 1 ppt showed that the production of 70 individuals/ml was highest at 10 ppt salinity and the doubling time ranged from 1.728 to 1.317 days.

The influence of ice on the bacteriological quality of the processed fishery products has been discussed. In almost all the cases ice has been traced to be a major source of contamination depending on the nature of water used for preparing it. The sources of contamination of ice and its remedies have been described.

Adequate data on the Wadge Bank fishery relating to several groups of fish, including Carangids, taken in bottom trawls are available for study. Analysis of this data indicated that the variation in Carangid catches was related to the time of day. In this paper, the available Wadge Bank fishery data is analysed and discussed to show the diurnal changes in Carangid catches and the probable influence of light in affecting these changes.

The purpose of this communication is to bring out the influence of season on the chemical composition of crab, covering a period of 2 years. Changes in moisture, protein, water extractable nitrogen, non-protein nitrogen, glycogen, lactic acid, fat and free amino acid composition of crab meat have been reported on a monthly basis.

A study of the influence of tunnelling on piled foundations was recently completed at the University of Cambridge. The study focussed on tunnelling near driven piles in dense sand and was carried out by means of centrifuge modelling. This paper presents a summary of the main findings, describing the mechanism controlling tunnelling-induced pile behaviour, a zone of influence around the tunnel where piles might be affected and recommendations for tunnelling near piles in practice. Both single piles and pile groups are considered.

Our recent efforts of using large-eddy simulation (LES) type methods to study complex and realistic geometry single stream and co-flow nozzle jets and acoustics are summarized in this paper. For the LES, since the solver being used tends towards having dissipative qualities, the subgrid scale (SGS) model is omitted, giving a numerical type LES (NLES). To overcome near wall streak resolution problems a near wall RANS (Reynolds averaged Navier-Stokes) model is smoothly blended in the LES making a hybrid RANS-NLES approach. Several complex nozzle geometries including the serrated (chevron) nozzle, realistic co-axial nozzles with eccentricity, pylon and wing-flap are discussed. The hybrid RANS-NLES simulations show encouraging predictions for the chevron jets. The chevrons are known to increase the high frequency noise at high polar angles, but decrease the low frequency noise at lower angles. The deflection effect of the potential core has an important mechanism of noise reduction. As for co-axial nozzles, the eccentricity, the pylon and the deployed wing-flap are shown to influence the flow development, especially the former to the length of potential core and the latter two having a significant impact on peak turbulence levels and spreading rates. The studies suggest that complex and real geometry effects are influential and should be taken into count when moving towards real engine simulations. © 2012 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

We report the effects of thermal annealing performed in N2 or O2 ambient at 1200 °C on the structural and optical properties of Er silicate films having different compositions (Er2Si O 5,Er2 Si2 O7, and their mixture). We demonstrate that the chemical composition of the stoichiometric films is preserved after the thermal treatments. All different crystalline structures formed after the thermal annealing are identified. Thermal treatments in O 2 lead to a strong enhancement of the photoluminescence intensity, owing to the efficient reduction of defect density. In particular the highest optical efficiency is associated to Er ions in the α phase of Er 2 Si2 O7. © 2008 American Institute of Physics.

The structural properties and the room temperature luminescence of Er2O3 thin films deposited by RF magnetron sputtering have been studied. Films characterized by good morphological properties have been obtained by using a SiO2 interlayer between the film and the Si substrate. The evolution of the properties of the Er2O3 films due to rapid thermal annealing processes in O2 ambient performed at temperatures in the range 800-1200 °C has been investigated in details. The existence of well-defined annealing conditions (temperature of 1100 °C or higher) allowing to avoid the occurrence of extensive chemical reactions with the oxidized substrate has been demonstrated and an increase of the photoluminescence (PL) intensity by about a factor of 40 with respect to the as deposited material has been observed. The enhanced efficiency of the photon emission process has been correlated with the longer lifetime of the PL signal. The same annealing processes are less effective when Er2O3 is deposited on Si. In this latter case interfacial reactions and pit formation occur, leading to a material characterized by stronger non-radiative phenomena that limit the PL efficiency. © 2006 Elsevier B.V.
