PURPOSE: To define the molecular pharmacology underlying the antiangiogenic effects of nonpeptide imidazolidine-2,4-dione somatostatin receptor agonists (NISAs) and evaluate the efficacy of NISA in ocular versus systemic delivery routes in ocular disease models. METHODS: Functional inhibitory effects of the NISAs and the somatostatin peptide analogue octreotide were evaluated in vitro by chemotaxis, proliferation, and tube-formation assays. The oxygen-induced retinopathy (OIR) model and the laser model of choroidal neovascularization (CNV) were used to test the in vivo efficacy of NISAs. Transscleral permeability of a candidate NISA was also measured. RESULTS: NISAs inhibited growth factor-induced HREC proliferation, migration and tube formation with submicromolar potencies (IC(50), 0.1-1.0 microM) comparable to octreotide. In the OIR model, systemic administration of the NISAs RFE-007 and RFE-011 inhibited retinal neovascularization in a dose-dependent manner, comparable to octreotide. In the CNV model, intravitreal RFE-011 resulted in a 56% reduction (P < 0.01) in CNV lesion area, whereas systemic administration resulted in a 35% reduction (P < 0.05) in lesion area. RFE-011 demonstrated transscleral penetration. CONCLUSIONS: Micromolar concentrations of octreotide and NISAs are necessary for antiangiogenic effects, whereas nanomolar concentrations are effective for endocrine inhibition. This suggests that the antiangiogenic activity of NISAs and octreotide is mediated by an overall much less efficient downstream coupling mechanism than is growth hormone release. As a result, the intravitreal or transscleral route of administration should be seriously considered for future clinical studies of SSTR2 agonists used for treatment of ocular neovascularization to ensure efficacious concentrations in the target retinal and choroidal tissue.

This article presents findings from a quantitative survey (N = 301) to evaluate the impact discriminatory incidents have on the attitudes of immigrants towards the majority society in Germany. The findings show that there is a strong relationship between experiences of discrimination and a hostile or alienated attitude towards German society. As an attempt to explain this generalization from single incidents to the macro relation between immigrants and autochthonous Germans in general a theory of framing, taken from developments in the field of rational choice theory, is applied. The reasoning is that a generalizing and rather hostile framing in terms of the attitude towards Germans can minimize psychic, emotional and social costs resulting from acts of discrimination.

Background. Increased incidence of cancer is documented in immunosuppressed transplant patients. Likewise, as survival increases for persons infected with the Human Immunodeficiency Virus (HIV), we expect their incidence of cancer to increase. The objective of this study was to examine the current gender specific spectrum of cancer in an HIV infected cohort (especially malignancies not currently associated with Acquired Immunodeficiency Syndrome (AIDS)) in relation to the general population.^ Methods. Cancer incidence data was collected for residents of Harris County, Texas who were diagnosed with a malignancy between 1975 and 1994. This data was linked to HIV/AIDS registry data to identify malignancies in an HIV infected cohort of 14,986 persons. A standardized incidence ratio (SIR) analysis was used to compare incidence of cancer in this cohort to that in the general population. Risk factors such as mode of HIV infection, age, race and gender, were evaluated for contribution to the development of cancer within the HIV cohort, using Cox regression techniques.^ Findings. Of those in the HIV infected cohort, 2289 persons (15%) were identified as having one or more malignancies. The linkage identified 29.5% of these malignancies (males 28.7% females 60.9%). HIV infected men and women had incidences of cancer that were 16.7 (16.1, 17.3) and 2.9 (2.3, 3.7) times that expected for the general population of Harris County, Texas, adjusting for age. Significant SIR's were observed for the AIDS-defining malignancies of Kaposi's sarcoma, non-Hodgkin's lymphoma, primary lymphoma of the brain and cancer of the cervix. Additionally, significant SIR's for non-melanotic skin cancer in males, 6.9 (4.8, 9.5) and colon cancer in females, 4.0 (1.1, 10.2) were detected. Among the HIV infected cohort, race/ethnicity of White (relative risk 2.4 with 95% confidence intervals 2.0, 2.8) or Spanish Surname, 2.2 (1.9, 2.7) and an infection route of male to male sex, with, 3.0 (1.9, 4.9) or without, 3.4 (2.1, 5.5) intravenous drug use, increased the risk of having a diagnosis of an incident cancer.^ Interpretation. There appears to be an increased risk of developing cancer if infected with the HIV. In addition to the malignancies routinely associated with HIV infection, there appears to be an increased risk of being diagnosed with non-melanotic skin cancer in males and colon cancer in females. ^

Historical approaches to the study of transitional justice are rare. In the process of its expansion to the dominating paradigm in dealing with past injustices, the field experienced far reaching changes. Scholarship about transitional justice, however, has hardly taken into account these shifts in appropriate ways. This article examines from a historical point of view how knowledge about transitional justice was generated and transferred across the borders of the national sites of dealing with the past, what were the groups of actors involved and what effects the transformations of the knowledge circulation as well as of the relationship between the actors since the late 1980s had on the development of the field. The focus of the analysis, thereby, is on the instrument of truth commissions.

Research of the ocean floor using the Mir submersibles carried out south of the Hawaiian Archipelago allowed to recover flows of recent picrite basalts. Lava vents are confined to a field of development of open fractures of a gjar type. Basalts represent initial lava flows in the structure of the Hawaiian volcanic archipelago. Considering contents of alkali and rare-earth elements in them, the picrite basalts of the bottom could be assigned to a series of island tholeiites. They are products of high level melting of asthenospheric matter at depth about 75-80 km as a result of decompression near a deep fracture that occurred in the lithosphere and asthenosphere. Similar picrite basalts were found in the base of the youngest volcano of the Hawaiian chain the Loihi Volcano. With respect to contents of alkali metals, these rocks are assigned to the subalkaline series of rocks formed during melting of garnet lherzolites. This could probably be explained by supply of melts from deeper levels of the asthenosphere after partial packing of an initial magma effluent fracture.
