Comparison of two measures of PSI electron transport in winter rye

The number of P700 (the reaction centre of Photosystem I) converted to P700+, in winter rye, was determined by measuring the absorbance change at 820nm . It was found, with a single turnover flash, that thylakoids isolated from cold grown plants have a 50% greater number of P700 oxidized than thylakoids isolated from warm grown plants. Incubation of thylakoids in the dark at 35 C did not change the number of P700 oxidized. The conversion of P700 to P700+ with a single flash can be compared to a steady state rate of electron transport using a Clark electrode. The results for P700 oxidation using the absorbance change at 820 nm measure effects within the PSI complex whereas the results obtained from a Clark electrode measures steady state electron transport between the cytochrome blf complex and the PSI complex. In contrast to the results for P700 oxidation it was shown, using a Clark electrode, that both thylakoids from cold grown plants and thylakoids incubated at in the dark 35 C exhibited 50% higher rates of electron transport than thylakoids from warm grown plants. The correlation between the higher rate of steady state PSI electron transport observed in thylakoids isolated from cold grown winter rye and number of active PSI reaction centres localizes the site of the increase to the PSI reaction centre. In contrast the lack of correlation after incubation at 35 C indicates the increase in the rate of light saturated electron transport in thylakoids isolated from cold grown plants and thylakoids incubated in the dark at 35 C occur by different mechanisms.

H.P. Lovecraft : étude comparative de récits des origines

Les différents commentateurs de Lovecraft se sont au fil du XXe siècle jusqu’à nos jours entendus sur un point : l’originalité de son oeuvre. Impossible à cataloguer dans un genre littéraire précis, offrant de multiples couches d’interprétation, celle-ci fut analysée à la fois sous l’angle psychanalytique et sous l’angle philosophique et scientifique. Cependant, la dimension purement esthétique semble, peut-être par négligence, avoir été oubliée. Notre mémoire propose une investigation de l’esthétique dans l’oeuvre de Lovecraft. Notre hypothèse de recherche repose sur les analogies évidentes et pourtant peu approfondies par la critique entre l’esthétique de celle-ci et l’esthétique cosmogonique de l’Antiquité. Dans un premier temps, nous situerons l’œuvre dans son contexte littéraire, c’est-à-dire que nous nous pencherons sur les rapports évidents qu’elle entretient avec des auteurs tels que J.R.R. Tolkien et Arthur Conan Doyle et sur les différences moins évidentes qui la distinguent d’autres d’auteurs tels que H.G. Wells et William Hope Hodgson. Ensuite, nous mettrons en perspective les différences qui la séparent logiquement de la cosmogonie hébraïque et de la tradition théologique et philosophique qu’elle inaugure, entre autres, tel qu’elle se cristallise dans La Divine Comédie de Dante. Finalement, nous démontrerons à partir d’une comparaison serrée de motifs analogues, présents dans la longue nouvelle de Lovecraft, At the Mountains of Madness et dans le poème d’Hésiode, La Théogonie, le parallèle révélateur entre leurs esthétiques respectives; leurs esthétiques qui découlent de paradigmes du réel historiquement et essentiellement distincts, mais non pas opposés ou contradictoires.

Synthesis of High Coercivity Cobalt Nanotubes with Acetate Precursors and Elucidation of the Mechanism of Growth

Cobalt nanotubes (CoNTs) with very high longitudinal coercivity were prepared by electrodeposition of cobalt acetate for the first time by using anodized alumina (AAO) template. They were then characterized with X-ray diffraction (XRD), a field emission scanning electron microscope (FESEM), and a transmission electron microscope (TEM). Formation of a highly ordered hexagonal cobalt phase is observed. Room temperature SQUID (superconducting quantum interference device) magnetometer measurements indicate that the easy axis of magnetization is parallel to the nanotube axis. These CoNTs exhibit very high longitudinal coercivity of ∼820 Oe. A very high intertubular interaction resulting from magnetostatic dipolar interaction between nanotubes is observed. Thick-walled nanotubes were also fabricated by using cobalt acetate tetrahydrate precursors. A plausible mechanism for the formation of CoNTs based on mobility assisted growth is proposed. The English novel in the time of Shakespeare

The rise of the English novel needs rethinking after it has been confined to the "formal realism" of Defoe, Richardson, and Fielding (Watt, 1957), to "antecedents, forerunners" (Schlauch, 1968; Klein, 1970) or to mere "prose fiction" (McKillop, 1951; Davis, Richetti, 1969; Fish, 1971; Salzman, 1985; Kroll, 1998). My paper updates a book by Jusserand under the same title (1890) by proving that the social and moral history of the long prose genre admits no strict separation of "novel" and "romance", as both concepts are intertwined in most fiction (Cuddon, Preston, 1999; Mayer, 2000). The rise of the novel, seen in its European context, mainly in France and Spain (Kirsch, 1986), and equally in England, was due to the melting of the nobility and high bourgeoisie into a "meritocracy", or to its failure, to become the new bearer of the national culture, around 1600. (Brink, 1998). My paper will concentrate on Euphues (1578), a negative romance, Euphues and His England (1580), a novel of manners, both by Lyly; Arcadia (1590-93) by Sidney, a political roman à clef in the disguise of a Greek pastoral romance; The Unfortunate Traveller (1594) by Nashe, the first English picaresque novel, and on Jack of Newbury (1596-97) by Deloney, the first English bourgeois novel. My analysis of the central values in these novels will prove a transition from the aristocratic cardinal virtues of WISDOM, JUSTICE, COURAGE, and HONOUR to the bourgeois values of CLEVERNESS, FAIR PLAY, INDUSTRY, and VIRGINITY. A similar change took place from the Christian virtues of LOVE, FAITH, HOPE to business values like SERVICE, TRUST, and OPTIMISM. Thus, the legacy of history proves that the main concepts of the novel of manners, of political romance, of picaresque and middle-class fiction were all developed in the time of Shakespeare.

Estudio crítico de la Ley 820 de 2003

Expedida la Ley 820 de 2003 la cual hace referencia al régimen de arrendamiento de vivienda urbana, se propusieron diferentes modificaciones en cuanto al régimen de servicios públicos domiciliarios, la solidaridad entre el arrendador y el arrendatario y se buscó reunir todas las normas que se encontraban a lo largo de la legislación colombiana que hacían alusión a dicho contrato. Habiendo transcurrido el lapso de seis años de su vigencia, existen varios problemas derivados de su aplicación que ameritan el estudio pertinente para encontrar la mejor manera de resolverlos legalmente o para proponer las reformas a la ley que sean necesarias para su perfeccionamiento.
