The chemistry of copper patination was investigated by two series of experiments. The chemistry of an aqueous copper-sulphate solution was studied at concentrations and pH values near those predicted in an electrolyte on copper exposed to the atmosphere. The electrochemical reactions in an electrolyte in contact with cuprite were investigated in a reaction vessel which used cuprite powder in artificial rainwater to study the electrochemistry of the atmospheric corrosion and patination of copper. Typical sulphate concentrations in rainwater are sufficient to precipitate posnjakite (Cu4SO4(OH)(6)2H(2)O)), a possible precursor to brochantite, within an hour of wetting a cuprite surface. Brochantite (Cu4SO4(OH)(6)), the most commonly found copper salt in natural patinas is responsible for their green appearance. Precipitation of brochantite from the electrolyte resulted from an increase in pH due to the cathodic reduction of oxygen and an increase in cupric ion concentrations by cuprite oxidation. The solution treatment stage of the T6 heat-treatment of Al-7%Si-Mg foundry alloys influences microstructural features such as Mg2Si dissolution, and eutectic silicon spheroidisation and coarsening. Microstructural and microanalytical studies have been conducted across a range of Sr-modified Al-7%Si alloys, with an Fe content of 0.12% and Mg contents ranging from 0.3-0.7wt%. Qualitative and quantitative metallography have shown that, in addition to the above changes, solution treatment also results in changes to the relative proportions of iron-containing intermetallic particles and that these changes are composition-dependent. While solution treatment causes a substantial transformation of pi phase to beta phase in low Mg alloys (0.3-0.4%), this change is not readily apparent at higher Mg levels (0.6-0.7%). The pi to beta transformation is accompanied by a release of Mg into the aluminum matrix over and above that which arises from the rapid dissolution of Mg2Si. Since the level of matrix Mg retained after quenching controls an alloy's subsequent precipitation hardening response, a proper understanding of this phase transformation is crucial if tensile properties are to be maximised.

2-Unsubstituted isoxazol-5(4H)-ones and -5(2N)-ones may be acylated by acid chlorides, anhydrides or carboxylic acids in the presence of carbodiimides, to give O- and N-acylated products, The solvent, the presence of base and the temperature are found to alter the product ratios dramatically, but the substituents present at C-3 have the greatest effect, Aliphatic acid anhydrides and chlorides generally react at nitrogen, but aroyl halides give significant proportions of O-acylated products, Limited success in converting O-aroyl to N-aroyl isoxazolones is reported.

N-Acylisoxazol-5-ones lose carbon dioxide under photochemical and thermal conditions affording iminocarbenes which undergo intramolecular cyclisation through the oxygen of the acyl group to give oxazoles. Under photochemical conditions those acylisoxazolones with electron withdrawing groups at C-4 usually give high yields of oxazoles, while those with electron donating groups at C-4 give only poor yields: the reverse is observed under thermal conditions.

5-Oxodihydroisoxazoles react with thiocarbonyl chlorides to afford N-thioacylisoxazol-5(2H)-ones which lose carbon dioxide under photochemical conditions and undergo intramolecular cyclisation of the iminocarbene to afford thiazoles, However, in some cases loss of carbon dioxide is accompanied by loss of sulfur, giving 1,3-oxazin-6-ones.

The reactions between novolac resins and hexamethylenetetramine (HMTA) which occur on curing have been studied by C-13 and N-15 high-resolution n.m.r. in both solution and the solid state. Strong evidence for the existence of many curing intermediates is obtained. New curing intermediates are reported along with experimental data to support previously postulated intermediates. The initial curing reactions between novolac and HMTA produce various substituted benzoxazines and benzylamines. Thermal decomposition/oxidation and further reactions of these initial intermediates generate methylene linkages between phenolic rings for chain extension and cross-linking. Among the three kinds of methylene linkages, the para-para methylene linkages are formed at relatively lower temperatures. Various imine, amide and imide side-products also concurrently appear during the process. The initial amount of HMTA plays a critical role in the curing reactivity and chemical structures of the cured resins. The lower the amount of HMTA, the lower the temperature at which curing occurs, and the lower the amount of the nitrogen-containing side-products in the finally cured resins. The ortho-linked intermediates are relatively stable, and can remain in the cured resins up to higher temperatures. The study provides an extensive description of the curing reactions of novolac resins. (C) 1997 Elsevier Science Ltd.

BACKGROUND: Previous studies have shown positive effects from noninvasive ventilation (NIV) or supplemental oxygen on exercise capacity in patients with COPD. However, the best adjunct for promoting physiologic adaptations to physical training in patients with severe COPD remains to be investigated. METHODS: Twenty-eight patients (mean +/- SD age 68 +/- 7 y) with stable COPD (FEV(1) 34 +/- 9% of predicted) undergoing an exercise training program were randomized to either NIV (n = 14) or supplemental oxygen (n = 14) during group training to maintain peripheral oxygen saturation (S(pO2)) >= 90%. Physical training consisted of treadmill walking (at 70% of maximal speed) 3 times a week, for 6 weeks. Patients were assessed at baseline and after 6 weeks. Assessments included physiological adaptations during incremental exercise testing (ratio of lactate concentration to walk speed, oxygen uptake [(V) over dot(O2)], and dyspnea), exercise tolerance during 6-min walk test, leg fatigue, maximum inspiratory pressure, and health-related quality of life. RESULTS: Two patients in each group dropped out due to COPD exacerbations and lack of exercise program adherence, and 24 completed the training program. Both groups improved 6-min walk distance, symptoms, and health-related quality of life. However, there were significant differences between the NIV and supplemental-oxygen groups in lactate/speed ratio (33% vs -4%), maximum inspiratory pressure (80% vs 23%), 6-min walk distance (122 m vs 47 m), and leg fatigue (25% vs 11%). In addition, changes in S(pO2)/speed, (V) over dot(O2), and dyspnea were greater with NIV than with supplemental-oxygen. CONCLUSIONS: NIV alone is better than supplemental oxygen alone in promoting beneficial physiologic adaptations to physical exercise in patients with severe COPD.

Introduction: This study evaluated in vitro the radiopacity, setting time, flow, film thickness, solubility, and dimensional changes of AH Plus sealer pure (Dentsply De Trey Gmbh, Konstanz, Germany) and containing 5% and 10% of calcium hydroxide. Methods: The study was performed according to the requirements of the ISO 6876:2001 standard and the American National Standards Institute/American Dental Association (ANSI/ADA)`s Specification No. 57. The following tests were performed: setting time, flow, film thickness, dimensional stability, radiopacity, and solubility. Data were analyzed statistically by analysis of variance and the Tukey tests with a significance level of 5%. Results: The addition of 5% or 10% calcium hydroxide to AH Plus sealer did not alter significantly the radiopacity or setting time values (p > 0.05). Adding 10% calcium hydroxide reduced the flow compared with pure AH Plus and AH Plus/5% calcium hydroxide. The addition of 5% and 10% calcium hydroxide increased the solubility and expansion of AH Plus. All materials presented expansion valued above those recommended by the ADA. The addition of calcium hydroxide to the sealer resulted in greater film thickness. Conclusions: The addition of 5% calcium hydroxide did not affect most physical properties of AH Plus sealer. Purpose: This study evaluated the effect of the incorporation of the antimicrobial monomer methacryloyloxyundecylpyridinium bromide (MUPB) on the hardness, roughness, flexural strength, and color stability of a denture base material. Materials and Methods: Ninety-six disk-shaped (14-mm diameter x 4-mm thick) and 30 rectangular (65 x 10 x 3.3 mm(3)) heat-polymerized acrylic resin specimens were divided into three groups according to the concentration of MUPB (w/w): (A) 0%, (B) 0.3%, (C) 0.6%. Hardness was assessed by a hardness tester equipped with a Vickers diamond penetrator. Flexural strength and surface roughness were tested on a universal testing machine and a surface roughness tester, respectively. Color alterations (Delta E) were measured by a portable spectrophotometer after 12 and 36 days of immersion in water, coffee, or wine. Variables were analyzed by ANOVA/Tukey HSD test (alpha = 0.05). Results: The following mean results (+/-SD) were obtained for hardness (A: 15.6 +/- 0.6, B: 14.6 +/- 1.7, C: 14.8 +/- 0.8 VHN; ANOVA: p = 0.061), flexural strength (A: 111 +/- 17, B: 105 +/- 12, C: 88 +/- 12 MPa; ANOVA: p = 0.008), and roughness (A: 0.20 +/- 0.11, B: 0.20 +/- 0.11, C: 0.24 +/- 0.08 mu m; ANOVA: p = 0.829). Color changes of immersed specimens were significantly influenced by solutions and time (A: 9.1 +/- 3.1, B: 14.8 +/- 7.5, C: 13.3 +/- 6.1 Delta E; ANOVA: p < 0.05). Conclusions: The incorporation of MUPB affects the mechanical properties of a denture base acrylic resin; however, the only significant change was observed for flexural strength and may not be critical. Color changes were slightly higher when resin containing MUPB was immersed in wine for a prolonged time; however, the difference has debatable clinical relevance.

Given the importance of protein complexes as therapeutic targets, it is necessary to understand the physical chemistry of these interactions under the crowded conditions that exist in cells. We have used sedimentation equilibrium to quantify the enhancement of the reversible homodimerization of alpha-chymotrypsin by high concentrations of the osmolytes glucose, sucrose, and raffinose. In an attempt to rationalize the ostuolyte-mediated stabilization of the a-chymotrypsin homodimer, we have used models based on binding interactions (transfer-free energy analysis) and steric interactions (excluded volume theory) to predict the stabilization. Although transfer-free energy analysis predicts reasonably well the relatively small stabilization observed for complex formation between cytochrome c and cytochrome c peroxidase, as well as that between bobtail quail lysozyme and a monoclonal Fab fragment, it underestimates the sugar-mediated stabilization of the alpha-chymotrypsin dimer. Although predictions based on excluded volume theory overestimate the stabilization, it would seem that a major determinant in the observed stabilization of the a-chymotrypsin homodimer is the thermodynamic nonideality arising from molecular crowding by the three small sugars.

Physical aging of amorphous anhydrous fructose at temperature 5 degreesC and at 22 degreesC was studied using differential scanning calorimetry (DSC). The dynamic glass transitions temperature, T-g0 for unaged samples was 16 degreesC and 13.3 degreesC for heating rate of 10 degreesC/min and 1 degreesC/min, respectively. The fictive temperature, T-f0 for unaged samples calculated by Richardson and Savill method was 12 degreesC, which is close to the dynamic value obtained from the lower DSC heating rate. The fictive temperature T-f of the aged fructose glasses at temperatures both below and above the transition region was fitted well by a non-exponential decay function (Williams-Watts form). Aging above the transition region (22 degreesC) for 18 d increased both the dynamic glass transition temperature T and the fictive temperature T-f. However, aging below the transition region (5 degreesC) for I d increased the dynamic glass transition temperature T-g but decreased the fictive temperature T-f.

The utilization of coal fly ash in the construction and non-construction areas has seen a rapid growth in the last decade. As production outweighs the utilization of fly ash, its disposal as a dilute or dense slurry is still practiced in coal fired power stations. In this review the surface chemistry of leaching coal fly ash is presented to highlight the role of mass transfer in providing resistance and consequently delayed leaching of elements, when fly ash is disposed or used for value addition.
