Synthesis based on cyclohexadienes .23. Total synthesis of 5-epi-pupukean-2-one

A new strategy for the construction of the isotwistane skeleton is reported from easily available cyclohexadienes which involves stereoselective alkylation of a bicyclooctenone derivative and a decarboxylative 5-exo-trig radical cyclisation as the key steps in the total synthesis of 5-epi-pupukean-2-one.

Reactivity switching and selective activation of C-1 or C-3 in 2,3-unsaturated thioglycosides

Reactivity switching and selective activation of C-1 or C-3 in 2,3-unsaturated thioglycosides, namely, 2,3-dideoxy-1-thio-D-hex-2-enopyranosides are reported. The reactivity switching allowed activation of either C-1 or C-3, with the use of either N-iodosuccinimide (NIS)/triflic acid (TfOH) or TfOH alone. C-1 glycosylation with alcohol acceptors occurred in the presence of NIS/TfOH, without the acceptors reacting at C-3. On the other hand, reaction of 2,3-unsaturated thioglycosides with alcohols mediated by triflic acid led to transposition of C-1 ethylthio-moiety to C-3 intramolecularly, to form 3-ethylthio-glycals. Resulting glycals underwent glycosylation with alcohols to afford 3-ethylthio-2-deoxy glycosides. However, when thiol was used as an acceptor, only a stereoselective addition at C-3 resulted, so as to form C-1, C-3 dithio-substituted 2-deoxypyranosides. (C) 2011 Elsevier Ltd. On the Magnetic Ground State of La(0.85)Sr(0.15)CoO(3) Single Crystals

We present an extensive study on magnetic and transport properties of La(0.85)Sr(0.15)CoO(3) single crystals grown by a float zone method to address the issue of phase separation versus spin-glass (SG) behavior. The dc magnetization study reveals a kink in field-cooled magnetization, and the peak in the zero-field-cooling curve shifts to lower temperature at modest dc fields, indicating the SG magnetic phase. The ac susceptibility study exhibits a considerable frequency-dependent peak shift (similar to 4 K) and a time-dependent memory effect below the freezing temperature. In addition, the characteristic time scale tau(0) estimated from the frequency-dependent ac susceptibility measurement is found to be similar to 10(-13) s, which matches well with typical values observed in canonical SG systems. The transport relaxation study evidently demonstrates the time-dependent glassy phenomena. In essence, all our experimental results corroborate the existence of SG behavior in La(0.85)Sr(0.15)CoO(3) single crystals.

Synthesis of new (Bi, La)(3)MSb(2)O(11) phases (M = Cr, Mn, Fe) with KSbO(3)-type structure and their magnetic and photocatalytic properties

Synthesis and structure of new (Bi, La)(3)MSb(2)O(11) phases (M = Cr, Mn, Fe) are reported in conjunction with their magnetic and photocatalytic properties. XRD refinements reflect that Bi(3)CrSb(2)O(11), Bi(2)LaCrSb(2)O(11), Bi(2)LaMnSb(2)O(11) and Bi(2)LaFeSb(2)O(11) adopt KSbO(3)-type structure (space group, Pn (3) over bar). The structure can be described through three interpenetrating networks where the first is the (M/Sb)O(6) octahedral network and other two are the identical networks having Bi(6)O(4) composition. The magnetic measurements on Bi(2)LaCrSb(2)O(11) and Bi(2)LaMnSb(2)O(11) show paramagnetic behaviour with magnetic moments close to the expected spin only magnetic moments of Cr(+3) and Mn(+3). The UV-Visible diffuse reflectance spectra are broad and indicate that these materials possess a bandgap of similar to 2 eV. The photocatalytic activity of these materials has been investigated by degrading Malachite Green (MG) under exposure to UV light.

Effect of oxygen pressure on the grain and domain structure of polycrystalline 0.85PbMg(1/3)Nb(2/3)O(3)-0.15PbTiO(3) thin films studied by scanning probe microscopy

0.85PbMg(1/3)Nb(2/3)O(3)-0.15PbTiO(3) ferroelectric-relaxor thin films have been deposited on La(0.5)nSr(0.5)CoO(3)/(1 1 1) Pt/TiO(2)/SiO(2)/Si by pulsed laser ablation at various oxygen partial pressures in the range 0.05 to 0.4 Torr. All the films have a rhombohedral perovskite structure. The grain morphology and orientation are drastically affected by the oxygen pressure, studied by x-ray diffraction and scanning electron microscopy. The domain structure investigations by dynamic contact electrostatic force microscopy have revealed that the distribution of polar nanoregions and their dynamics is influenced by the grain morphology, orientation and more importantly, oxygen vacancies. The correlation length extracted from autocorrelation function images has shown that the polarization disorder decreases with oxygen pressure up to 0.3 Torr. The presence of polarized domains and their electric field induced switching is discussed in terms of internal bias field and domain wall pinning. Film deposited at 0.4 Torr presents a curious case with unique triangular grain morphology and large polarization disorder.

Tuning of phonon anharmonicity in pyrochlore titanates: temperature-dependent Raman studies of Sm2Ti2-xZrxO7 (x=0, 1/2, 3/4, and 2)and stuffed spin-ice Ho2+xTi2-xO7-x/2 (x=0, 1/3, and 2/3)

Anomalous temperature dependence of Raman phonon wavenumbers attributed to phononphonon anharmonic interactions has been studied in two different families of pyrochlore titanates. We bring out the role of the ionic size of titanium and the inherent vacancies of pyrochlore in these anomalies by studying the effect of replacement of Ti4?+ by Zr4?+ in Sm2Ti2O7 and by stuffing Ho3?+ in place of Ti4?+ in Ho2Ti2O7 with appropriate oxygen stoichiometry. Our results show that an increase in the concentration of the larger ion, i.e. Zr4?+ or Ho3?+, reduces the phonon anomalies, thus implying a decrease in the phononphonon anharmonic interactions. In addition, we find signatures of coupling between a phonon and crystal field transition in Sm2Ti2O7, manifested as an unusual increase in the phonon intensity with increasing temperature. Studies on Field Dependent Domain Structures in Multi-Grained 0.85PbMg(1/3)Nb(2/3)O3-0.15PbTiO(3) Thin Films by Scanning Force Microscopy

0.85PbMg(1/3)Nb(2/3)O(3)-0.15PbTiO(3) (0.85PMN-0.15PT) ferroelectric relaxor thin films have been deposited on La0.5Sr0.5CoO3/(111) Pt/TiO2/SiO2/Si by pulsed laser ablation by varying the oxygen partial pressures from 50 mTorr to 400 mTorr. The X-ray diffraction pattern reveals a pyrochlore free polycrystalline film. The grain morphology of the deposited films was studied using scanning electron microscopy and was found to be affected by oxygen pressure. By employing dynamic contact-electrostatic force microscopy we found that the distribution of polar nanoregions is majorly affected by oxygen pressure. Finally, the electric field induced switching in these films is discussed in terms of domain wall pinning.

The exploration of Kemp's triacid (KTA) as the core for the synthesis of 3-fold symmetric 2(3)-cyclophane, 2(2)-cyclophane and novel linker directed designs

For the first time, two units of KTA have been linked to three units of cyst-di-OMe. The reaction is noteworthy since it involves the formation of six amide bonds leading to a three-fold symmetric 23-cyclophane (3) harboring a cluster of three S-S bridges. The major product is a di-imide (4), arising from the interaction of a cystine NH with a neighbouring activated ester. A third reaction of tethering KTA with a single cyst-di-OMe unit afforded the flexible compound 6 and, with benzidine, the novel linker directed 7 with orthogonally disposed anchor modules.

An encaged sigma* orbital in 3-methoxy-2,4,10-trioxaadamantane. Preferred exo-anomeric effect as revealed by the crystal structure

In the titled tricyclic orthocarbonate derivative, the three endocyclic C-O bonds are longer than the exo-cyclic C-O bond (similar to 4.40 angstrom vs. similar to 1.37 angstrom). This indicates an anomeric-type interaction between the two electron lone pairs on the exocyclic oxygen atom and the antibonding orbitals of the two antiperiplanar endocyclic C-O bonds. The remaining endocyclic C-O bond - marginally shorter than the other two apparently adds to this effect. Intriguingly, the antibonding orbital of the exocyclic C-O bond extends into the interior of the adamantyl cage, and is stereoelectronically prevented from overlapping with any of the six adjacent lone pairs. The results also seem to indicate a preference for interaction between a single donor oxygen atom and multiple acceptor antibonding orbitals rather than vice versa. The results add insightfully to the substantial body of evidence favouring the antiperiplanar lone pair hypothesis (ALPH). (C) 2014 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

Novel triethylamine mediated thermal reactions of 3-aryl-2-cyanoprop-2-enoic acid derivatives-demethylation, reduction and vinylogation

3-Aryl-2-propenoic acid derivatives undergo interesting reactions with hot triethylamine. Substrates like 6 having a methoxyl with a nitro in the ortho and cyanoacrylic derivatives in the para positions give O-demethylated products, for example, entacapone 7. On the other hand compounds like 16 having the NO2 in the para and cyanoacrylic in the ortho position undergo reduction and vinylogation.
