Dunite, wehrlite and websterite xenoliths occur amongst a large abundance of mantle xenoliths in kimberlites of the Kimberley cluster in South Africa. Up to know they have mostly been neglected. On the basis of texture, major and trace elements, oxygen isotopes as well as Re-Os isotope characteristics, they can be subdivided into two groups. A coarse-grained mantle peridotite group, comprising dunite, wehrlite and websterite xenoliths, that are similar to fertile peridotites and represent upper mantle assemblages that are differently influenced by mantle metasomatism. And a cumulate group, containing fine-grained Fe-rich dunite xenoliths that represent cumulates of flood basalt magmatism related to ~183 Ma Karoo and ~2.7 Ga Ventersdorp events in southern Africa. Dunite, wehrlite and websterite xenoliths have preserved a complex history of melt depletion and metasomatic re-enrichment events, which gives information about the different re-enrichment stages of the subcratonic lithospheric mantle and the spatial differences within the Kaapvaal craton upper mantle. Websterite xenoliths comprise orthopyroxene (40-85 Vol. %), clinopyroxene (5-42 Vol. %), garnet (4-10 Vol. %) and subordinately olivine, while dunite and wehrlite xenoliths contain predominantly olivine (65-100 Vol %) and subordinately orthopyroxene, clinopyroxene and garnet. High melt depletion and a dunitic to harzburgitic protolith composition are reflected by high forsterite (Fo90-92) and high olivine NiO contents (2800-5000 ppm) and high orthopyroxene Mg# (Mg/(Mg+Fe)) of 0.91-0.93. Re-depletion ages of predominantly 2.9 Ga reflect a minimum age of melt depletion. Melt depletion ceased in conjunction with collision of the Kimberley block with the Witwatersrand block ~2.9 Ga ago. Subduction related re-fertilisation of the previously depleted mantle xenoliths is documented by i) amoeboid textured orthopyroxene, clinopyroxene and garnet, which crystallized in schlieren along olivine grain boundaries, ii) high whole-rock SiO2, Al2O3, CaO, TiO2, FeO contents, iii) low oxygen isotope ratios in clinopyroxene and garnet of 4.8-5.4 ‰ and 4.7-5.3 ‰, respectively and iv) trace element compositions of wehrlitic clinopyroxene and garnet in equilibrium with high-pressure partial melts of eclogite. Trace element disequilibrium of orthopyroxene with clinopyroxene and garnet indicates a separate origin for orthopyroxene, on one side as primary mantle orthopyroxene in dunite and wehrlite xenoliths and on the other side as reaction product with Si-rich melts produced by partial melting of eclogite. This reaction triggered replacement of olivine by orthopyroxene in the surrounding mantle and produced the typical Si-rich composition of Kaapvaal mantle peridotites. Partial melting of eclogite at higher temperatures produced a second metasomatic melt with lower SiO2, but higher Al2O3, CaO, FeO, Ti, Zr, Hf and a low oxygen isotope ratio. This melt triggered clinopyroxene and locally garnet and rutile crystallization in percolation veins, replacing olivine and orthopyroxene in the Kaapvaal upper mantle. Additionally, websterite xenoliths have experienced late stage cryptic metasomatism by the host kimberlite melt, changing the trace element composition of clinopyroxene, orthopyroxene and garnet to different extent. Hence websterite and most fertile lherzolite xenoliths have experienced three metasomatic events: i) reaction with high-Si melt, ii) percolation of subduction related silica melt with lower SiO2 content and iii) cryptic metasomatism by kimberlite. In contrast, dunite and wehrlite xenoliths have only experienced the second metasomatic event. They represent mantle lithologies further away from metasomatising agents. The Fe-rich dunites comprise olivine neoblasts with subordinate olivine porphyroclasts and parallel-orientated needles of ilmenite, which may enclose spinel. The lower forsterite and NiO contents of olivine in Fe-rich dunites compared to mantle peridotite xenoliths (Fo87-89 vs. Fo93-95 and 1300-2800ppm vs. 2200-3900 ppm, respectively), rules out a restitic origin. Cr-rich spinels are remnants of the original cumulate mineralogy that survived a late stage metasomatic overprint related to the production of the host kimberlite, producing ilmenite and phlogopite in some samples. Olivine porphyroclasts and neoblasts have different trace element compositions, the latter having high Ti, V, Cr and Ni and low Zn, Zr and Nb contents, indicating contrasting origins for neoblasts and porphyroclasts. The dunites have high 187Os/188Os ratios (0.11-0.15) indicating young (Phanerozoic) model ages for most samples, whereas three samples show isotopic mixtures between Phanerozoic neoblasts and ancient porphyroclastic material. Most Fe-rich dunite xenoliths can be interpreted as cumulates of fractional crystallization of Karoo magmatism, whereas the porphyroclasts are interpreted to be remnants from the much earlier Archaean Ventersdorp magmatism.

Postmortem computed tomography (pmCT) and pmCT angiography (pmCTA) provide a minimally invasive method to determine the cause of death. Postmortem image-guided biopsy allows for precise sampling of histological specimens. This case study describes the findings of lethal systemic fat embolism (FE) on whole-body unenhanced pmCT, pmCTA, and image-guided biopsy, with autopsy and histopathologic correlation. Unenhanced pmCT revealed a distinct fat level on top of sedimented layers of corpuscular blood particles and serum in the arterial system and pulmonary trunk. Subsequent pmCTA showed reproducible results, and image-guided biopsy confirmed fatal FE. pm CT/pmCTA combined with image-guided biopsy established the cause of death as right heart failure as a result of systemic fatal FE prior to autopsy. All imaging findings were consistent with traditional autopsy and histological specimens. This unique case demonstrates new imaging findings in massive, fatal FE and highlights that postmortem imaging, supplemented by image-guided biopsy, may detect the cause of death prior to traditional autopsy.

This doctoral thesis presents the computational work and synthesis with experiments for internal (tube and channel geometries) as well as external (flow of a pure vapor over a horizontal plate) condensing flows. The computational work obtains accurate numerical simulations of the full two dimensional governing equations for steady and unsteady condensing flows in gravity/0g environments. This doctoral work investigates flow features, flow regimes, attainability issues, stability issues, and responses to boundary fluctuations for condensing flows in different flow situations. This research finds new features of unsteady solutions of condensing flows; reveals interesting differences in gravity and shear driven situations; and discovers novel boundary condition sensitivities of shear driven internal condensing flows. Synthesis of computational and experimental results presented here for gravity driven in-tube flows lays framework for the future two-phase component analysis in any thermal system. It is shown for both gravity and shear driven internal condensing flows that steady governing equations have unique solutions for given inlet pressure, given inlet vapor mass flow rate, and fixed cooling method for condensing surface. But unsteady equations of shear driven internal condensing flows can yield different “quasi-steady” solutions based on different specifications of exit pressure (equivalently exit mass flow rate) concurrent to the inlet pressure specification. This thesis presents a novel categorization of internal condensing flows based on their sensitivity to concurrently applied boundary (inlet and exit) conditions. The computational investigations of an external shear driven flow of vapor condensing over a horizontal plate show limits of applicability of the analytical solution. Simulations for this external condensing flow discuss its stability issues and throw light on flow regime transitions because of ever-present bottom wall vibrations. It is identified that laminar to turbulent transition for these flows can get affected by ever present bottom wall vibrations. Detailed investigations of dynamic stability analysis of this shear driven external condensing flow result in the introduction of a new variable, which characterizes the ratio of strength of the underlying stabilizing attractor to that of destabilizing vibrations. Besides development of CFD tools and computational algorithms, direct application of research done for this thesis is in effective prediction and design of two-phase components in thermal systems used in different applications. Some of the important internal condensing flow results about sensitivities to boundary fluctuations are also expected to be applicable to flow boiling phenomenon. Novel flow sensitivities discovered through this research, if employed effectively after system level analysis, will result in the development of better control strategies in ground and space based two-phase thermal systems.

BACKGROUND: Recent studies have shown that a low clinical pretest probability may be adequate for excluding heparin-induced thrombocytopenia. However, for patients with intermediate or high pretest probability, laboratory testing is essential for confirming or refuting the diagnosis. Rapid assessment of anti-PF4/heparin-antibodies may assist clinical decision-making. OBJECTIVES: To evaluate the performance of rapid ID-H/PF4-PaGIA. In particular, we verified reproducibility of results between plasma and serum specimens, between fresh and frozen samples, and between different ID-H/PF4-polymer lots (polystyrene beads coated with heparin/PF4-complexes). PATIENTS/METHODS: The samples studied were 1376 plasma and 914 corresponding serum samples from patients investigated for suspected heparin-induced thrombocytopenia between January 2000 and October 2008. Anti-PF4/heparin-antibodies were assessed by ID-H/PF4-PaGIA, commercially available ELISAs and heparin-induced platelet aggregation test. RESULTS: Among 914 paired plasma/serum samples we noted discordant results (negative vs. low-titre positive) in nine instances (1%; 95%CI, 0.4-1.6%). Overall, agreement between titres assessed in plasma vs. serum was highly significant (Spearman correlation coefficient, 0.975; P < 0.0001). Forty-seven samples tested both fresh and after freezing/thawing showed a good agreement, with one discordant positive/negative result (Spearman correlation coefficient, 0.970; P < 0.0001). Among 1376 plasma samples we noted a strikingly variable incidence of false negative results (none - 82%; 95%CI, 66-98%), depending on the employed ID-H/PF4-polymer lot. Faulty lots can be recognized by titrating commercial positive controls and stored samples of HIT-patients. CONCLUSION: Laboratories performing the assay should implement stringent internal quality controls in order to recognize potentially faulty ID-H/PF4-polymer lots, thus avoiding false negative results.

Fragmentation and vegetative regeneration from small fragments may contribute to population expansion, dispersal and establishment of new populations of introduced plants. However, no study has systematically tested whether a high capacity of vegetative regeneration is associated with a high degree of invasiveness. For small single-node fragments, the presence of internodes may increase regeneration capacity because internodes may store carbohydrates and proteins that can be used for regeneration. We conducted an experiment with 39 stoloniferous plant species to examine the regeneration capacity of small, single-node fragments with or without attached stolon internodes. We asked (1) whether the presence of stolon internodes increases regeneration from single-node fragments, (2) whether regeneration capacity differs between native and introduced species in China, and (3) whether regeneration capacity is positively associated with plant invasiveness at a regional scale (within China) and at a global scale. Most species could regenerate from single-node fragments, and the presence of internodes increased regeneration rate and subsequent growth and/or asexual reproduction. Regeneration capacity varied greatly among species, but showed no relationship to invasiveness, either in China or globally. High regeneration capacity from small fragments may contribute to performance of clonal plants in general, but it does not appear to explain differences in invasiveness among stoloniferous clonal species

INTRODUCTION Erectile dysfunction (ED) is an increasing health problem that demands effective treatment. There is evidence that phosphodiesterase-5 inhibitors (PDE5-Is) and psychological intervention (PI) are effective treatment options; however, little is known about their comparative efficacy and the efficacy of combined treatments. AIM The aim of this systematic review and meta-analysis is to evaluate the comparative efficacy of PI, PDE5-Is, and their combination in the treatment of ED. MAIN OUTCOME MEASURES Primary outcome was ED symptoms, and secondary outcome was sexual satisfaction of the patient. METHODS A systematic literature search was conducted in order to identify relevant articles published between 1998 and 2012. We included randomized controlled trials and controlled trials comparing PI with PDE5-I treatment or one of them against a combination of both. RESULTS Eight studies with a total number of 562 patients were included in the meta-analysis. The results of the included studies are inconclusive, though they show a trend towards a larger effect of combined treatment compared with PI or PDE5-I treatment alone. The meta-analysis found that, overall, combined treatment was more efficacious for ED symptoms than PDE5-I treatment or PI alone. Combined treatment was more efficacious than PDE5-I use alone on sexual satisfaction. No differences were found between PDE5-Is and PI as stand-alone treatments. None of the moderators (treatment duration, methodological quality, or researcher allegiance) altered the effects. CONCLUSIONS The combination of PI and PDE5-Is is a promising strategy for a favorable outcome in ED and can be considered as a first-choice option for ED patients. Stronger RCTs are required to confirm this initial finding. Schmidt HM, Munder T, Gerger H, Frühauf S, and Barth J. Paleogeographic reconstructions of India and Madagascar before their late Cretaceous rifting juxtapose the Antongil Block of Madagascar against the Deccan Traps of India, indicating that the Western Dharwar Craton extends below the Deccan lavas. Some recent studies have suggested that the South Maharashtra Shear Zone along the northern Konkan coast of India limits the northern extent of the Western Dharwar Craton, implying that the craton does not extend below the Deccan Traps, raising a question mark on paleogeographic reconstructions of India and Madagascar. The continuity of the Western Dharwar Craton north of the South Maharashtra Shear Zone below the Deccan Traps—or its lack thereof—is critical for validating tectonic models correlating Madagascar with India. In this study, zircons in tonalitic basement xenoliths hosted in Deccan Trap dykes were dated in situ, using the U-Pb isotope system. The data furnish U-Pb ages that define three populations at 2527 ± 6, 2456 ± 6, and 2379 ± 9 Ma. The 2527 ± 6 Ma ages correspond to the igneous crystallization of the tonalites, whereas the 2456 ± 6 and 2379 ± 9 Ma ages date metamorphic overprints. The results help to establish for the first time that the basement is a part of the Neoarchean granitoid suite of the Western Dharwar Craton, which extends northward up to at least Talvade in central and Kihim beach in the western Deccan. By implication, the South Maharashtra Shear Zone cannot be the northern limit of the Western Dharwar Craton. The granitoids are correlated with the Neoarchean felsic intrusions (2.57–2.49) of the Masaola suite in the Antongil Block of Madagascar, supporting the existence of a Neoarchean Greater Dharwar Craton comprising the Western Dharwar Craton and the Antongil-Masora Block.
