Animal communication often occurs in communication networks in which multiple signalers and receivers are within signaling range of each other. In such networks, individuals can obtain information on the quality and motivation of territorial neighbors by eavesdropping on their signaling interactions. In songbirds, extracting information from interactions involving neighbors is thought to be an important factor in the evolution of strategies of territory defense. In a playback experiment with radio-tagged nightingales Luscinia megarhynchos we here demonstrate that territorial males use their familiar neighbors' performance in a vocal interaction with an unfamiliar intruder as a standard for their own response. Males were attracted by a vocal interaction between their neighbor and a simulated stranger and intruded into the neighbor's territory. The more intensely the neighbor had interacted with playback, the earlier the intrusions were made, indicating that males eavesdropped on the vocal contest involving a neighbor. However, males never intruded when we had simulated by a second playback that the intruder had retreated and sang outside the neighbor's territory. These results suggest that territorial males use their neighbors' singing behavior as an early warning system when territorial integrity is threatened. Simultaneous responses by neighboring males towards unfamiliar rivals are likely to be beneficial to the individuals in maintaining territorial integrity.

The feasibility of using diatomite for the removal of the problematic reactive dyes as well as basic dyes from textile wastewater was investigated. Methylene blue, Cibacron reactive black and reactive yellow dyes were considered. Physical characteristics of diatomite such as pH(solution), pH(ZPC), surface area, Fourier transform infrared, and scanning electron microscopy were investigated. The surface area of diatomite was found to be 27.80 m(2) g(-1) and the pH(ZPC) occurred around pH of 5.4. The results indicated that the surface charge of diatomite decreased as the pH of the solution increased with the maximum methylene blue removal from aqueous solution occurring at basic pH of around (1011). Adsorption isotherms of diatomite with methylene blue, hydrolysed reactive black and yellow dyes were constructed at different pH values, initial dye concentrations and particle sizes. The experimental results were fitted to the Langmuir, Freundlich, and Henry models. The study indicated that electrostatic interactions play an important role in the adsorption of dyes onto diatomite. A model of the adsorption mechanism of methylene blue onto diatomite is proposed. The physical effect of high concentrations of reversibly dissolved SO2 on [C(2)mim][NTf2] was examined using cyclic voltammetry, chronoamperometry, and ESR spectroscopy. Cyclic voltammetry of the oxidation of solutions of ferrocene, N,N,N',N'-tetramethyl-p-phenylenediamine (TMPD), and chloride in the room temperature ionic liquid (RTIL) 1-ethyl-3-methylimidazolium bis(trifluoromethanesufonyl)imide ([C(2)mim][NTf2]) reveals an increase in limiting current of each species corresponding to the addition of increasing concentrations of sulfur dioxide. Quantitative chronoamperometry reveals an increase in each species' diffusion coefficient with SO2 concentration. When chronoamperometric data were obtained for ferrocene in [C(2)mim][NTf2] at a range of temperatures, the translational diffusion activation energy (29.0 +/- 0.5 kJ mol(-1)) was found to be in good agreement with previous studies. Adding SO2 results in apparent near-activationless translational diffusion. A significant decrease in the activation energy of rotational diffusion with the SO2 saturation of a 2,2,6,6-tetramethyl-1-piperidinyloxyl (TEMPO) solution in [C(2)mim][NTf2] (29.9 +/- 2.0 to 7.7 +/- 5.3 kJ mol(-1)) was observed using electron spin resonance (ESR) spectroscopy. The reversible physical absorption Of SO2 by [C(2)mim][NTf2] should have no adverse effect on the ability of that ionic liquid to be employed as a solvent in an electrochemical gas sensor, and it is possible that the SO2-mediated reduction of RTIL viscosity could have intrinsic utility.

Measures of self-reported health status are increasingly used in research and health policy. However, the inherent subjectivity of the responses gives rise to lingering concerns about their utility, especially across national and cultural boundaries. In this study we use religious denomination as a proxy for Scottish ancestry within Northern Ireland and demonstrate significant differences in levels of self-reported ill-health that are not fully reflected in mortality risks. These findings mirror the differences between Scotland and Northern Ireland previously shown in ecological studies and provide more definitive evidence that even within the United Kingdom factors other than morbidity levels influence the perception and reporting of health status. Possible explanations for the dissonance between morbidity and mortality levels are discussed and the reasons for a preference for socio-economic rather than cultural factors are described. In the complete genome sequences of Bacteroides fragilis NCTC9343 and 638R, we have discovered a gene, ubb, the product of which has 63% identity to human ubiquitin and cross-reacts with antibodies raised against bovine ubiquitin. The sequence of ubb is closest in identity (76%) to the ubiquitin gene from a Migratory Grasshopper entomopoxvirus, suggesting acquisition by inter-kingdom horizontal gene transfer. We have screened clinical isolates of B. fragilis from diverse geographical regions and found that ubb is present in some, but not all strains. The gene is transcribed and the mRNA translated in B. fragilis, but deletion of ubb did not have a detrimental effect on growth. BfUbb has a predicted signal sequence; both full length and processed forms were detected in whole cell extracts, while the processed form was found in concentrated culture supernatants. Purified recombinant BfUbb inhibited in vitro ubiquitination and was able to covalently bind the human E1 activating enzyme, suggesting it could act as a suicide substrate in vivo. B. fragilis is one of the predominant members of the normal human resident gastro-intestinal microbiota with estimates up to >1011 cells g-1 of faeces by culture. These data indicate that the gastro-intestinal tract of some individuals could contain a significant amount of aberrant ubiquitin with the potential to inappropriately activate the host immune system and/or interfere with eukaryotic ubiquitin activity. This discovery could have profound implications in relation to our understanding of human diseases such as inflammatory bowel and autoimmune diseases.

Theoretical emission-line ratios involving Fe xi transitions in the 257-407 A wavelength range are derived using fully relativistic calculations of radiative rates and electron impact excitation cross-sections. These are subsequently compared with both long wavelength channel Extreme-Ultraviolet Imaging Spectrometer (EIS) spectra from the Hinode satellite (covering 245-291 A) and first-order observations (similar to 235-449 A) obtained by the Solar Extreme-ultraviolet Research Telescope and Spectrograph (SERTS). The 266.39, 266.60 and 276.36 A lines of Fe xi are detected in two EIS spectra, confirming earlier identifications of these features, and 276.36 A is found to provide an electron density (N-e) diagnostic when ratioed against the 257.55 A transition. Agreement between theory and observation is found to be generally good for the SERTS data sets, with discrepancies normally being due to known line blends, while the 257.55 A feature is detected for the first time in SERTS spectra. The most useful Fe xi electron density diagnostic is found to be the 308.54/352.67 intensity ratio, which varies by a factor of 8.4 between N-e = 108 and 1011 cm-3, while showing little temperature sensitivity. However, the 349.04/352.67 ratio potentially provides a superior diagnostic, as it involves lines which are closer in wavelength, and varies by a factor of 14.7 between N-e = 108 and 1011 cm-3. Unfortunately, the 349.04 A line is relatively weak, and also blended with the second-order Fe x 174.52 A feature, unless the first-order instrument response is enhanced.

The detection of oxygen using optical sensors is of increasing interest, especially in modified atmosphere food packaging (MAP), in which the package, usually containing food, is flushed with a gas, such as carbon dioxide or nitrogen. This tutorial review examines the ideal properties of an oxygen optical sensor for MAP and compares them with those developed to date, including the most recent advances. The basic technologies underpinning the different indicator types are described, examples given and their potential for application in MAP assessed. This tutorial review should be of interest to the MAP industry and researchers in optical sensors and oxygen sensing.

5-HT-immunoreactivity in Entobdella soleae was found to be extensive throughout both the central and peripheral nervous systems, with the strongest staining occurring in the innervation of the forebody, most notably in the paired cerebral ganglia, pharynx and adhesive pads. In the reproductive system, staining was evident throughout the numerous cell bodies and fibres innervating the musculature of the egg-assembly apparatus. The haptor contained an extensive array of serotoninergic fibres derived from the main longitudinal cords; this array was associated with the haptoral muscles and sclerites, and possibly with the ventral sensory papillae.

This paper presents the design and implementation of a novel optical fiber temperature compensated relative humidity (RH) sensor device, based on fiber Bragg gratings (FBGs) and developed specifically for monitoring water ingress leading to the deterioration of building stone. The performance of the sensor thus created, together with that of conventional sensors, was first assessed in the laboratory where they were characterized under experimental conditions of controlled wetting and drying cycles of limestone blocks, before being employed “in-the-field” to monitor actual building stone in a specially built wall. Although a new construction, this was built specifically using conservation methods similar to those employed in past centuries, to allow an accurate simulation of processes occurring with wetting and drying in the historic walls in the University of Oxford.
