This layer is a georeferenced raster image of the historic paper map entitled: A chart of Nantucket shoals, surveyed by Paul Pinkham. Survey data was taken from "the light house on Nantucket Point in 1784." It was published and sold by John Norman, Feb. 10th, 1791. Scale [ca. 1:145,000]. Covers Nantucket Sound, Massachusetts and surrounding land. The image inside the map neatline is georeferenced to the surface of the earth and fit to the Massachusetts State Plane Coordinate System, Mainland Zone (in Feet) (Fipszone 2001). All map collar and inset information is also available as part of the raster image, including any inset maps, profiles, statistical tables, directories, text, illustrations, or other information associated with the principal map. This nautical chart shows coastal features such as lighthouses, rocks, shoals, currents, channels, points, coves, harbors, islands, and more. Depths are shown by soundings and shading. Land features include settlements, wind mills, and more. This layer is part of a selection of digitally scanned and georeferenced historic maps of Massachusetts from the Harvard Map Collection. A field study in three vineyards in southern Queensland (Australia) was carried out to develop predictive models for individual leaf area and shoot leaf area of two cultivars (Cabernet Sauvignon and Shiraz) of grapevines (Vitis Vinifera L.). Digital image analysis was used to measure leaf vein length and leaf area. Stepwise regressions of untransformed and transformed models consisting of up to six predictor variables for leaf area and three predictor variables for shoot leaf area were carried out to obtain the most efficient models. High correlation coefficients were found for log10 transformed individual leaf and shoot leaf area models. The significance of predictor variables in the models varied across vineyards and cultivars, demonstrating the discontinuous and heterogeneous nature of vineyards. The application of this work in a grapevine modeling environment and in a dynamic vineyard management context are discussed. Sample sizes for quantification of individual leaf areas and areas of leaves on shoots are proposed based on target margins of errors of sampled data.

In this paper the network problem of determining all-pairs shortest-path is examined. A distributed algorithm which runs in O(n) time on a network of n nodes is presented. The number of messages of the algorithm is O(e+n log n) where e is the number of communication links of the network. We prove that this algorithm is time optimal.

The present data compilation includes dinoflagellates growth rate, grazing rate and gross growth efficiency determined either in the field or in laboratory experiments. From the existing literature, we synthesized all data that we could find on dinoflagellates. Some sources might be missing but none were purposefully ignored. We did not include autotrophic dinoflagellates in the database, but mixotrophic organisms may have been included. This is due to the large uncertainty about which taxa are mixotrophic, heterotrophic or symbiont bearing. Field data on microzooplankton grazing are mostly comprised of grazing rate using the dilution technique with a 24h incubation period. Laboratory grazing and growth data are focused on pelagic ciliates and heterotrophic dinoflagellates. The experiment measured grazing or growth as a function of prey concentration or at saturating prey concentration (maximal grazing rate). When considering every single data point available (each measured rate for a defined predator-prey pair and a certain prey concentration) there is a total of 801 data points for the dinoflagellates, counting experiments that measured growth and grazing simultaneously as 1 data point.

In a context of climatic change, where high temperatures are frequent in the first phases of ripening, protecting bunches from solar radiation is essential to preserve berry colors. This thesis reports data collected in 2015 within a 3-year experiment conducted in Tebano (Faenza, Italy) in an organically-managed vineyard. Vines of cv Sangiovese submitted to post-veraison (15 Brix), pre-harvest late defoliation and post-veraison shoot positioning were compared with untreated controls. Treatments did not modify berry skin anthocyanins and flavonols, berry weight, soluble solids, pH, titratable acidity. Data are discussed in terms of the relevance of preserving berry skin anthocyanins and increasing berry skin flavonols through sustainable agronomic approaches for improving the color of young (co-pigmentation) and older (formation of polymeric pigments) wines. The benefits of late defoliations as an effective tool against Botrytis cluster rot are also discussed.

A atividade vitícola praticada na região do Douro é uma das mais importantes atividades agrícolas do país, não só devido a fatores socioculturais, como também pelo seu valor económico. A Região Demarcada do Douro (RDD) é uma das regiões vitícolas mais antiga do mundo, onde é produzido um dos vinhos generosos mais famosos do mundo, o Vinho do Porto. Contudo, no cultivo intensivo da vinha, o uso recorrente a pesticidas para o controlo de pragas das vinhas pode ter repercussões a nível da qualidade dos solos e dos cursos de água na envolvente às vinhas. O presente estudo foi desenvolvido numa área-piloto da sub-região Baixo Corgo da RDD, com o intuito de averiguar os possíveis efeitos e estimar os prováveis riscos ambientais promovidos pela viticultura. Foram selecionadas três vinhas, com idades de plantação distintas, onde foram recolhidas amostras de solos à superfície, tendo-se ainda feito uma recolha de amostras de água, sedimentos e águas intersticiais dos rios e da barragem na envolvente da área de estudo. Diferentes parâmetros químicos e físico-químicos foram analisados para uma avaliação global da área e prováveis fontes dos elementos. Especial destaque foi dado ao Cu, C, P, N, NO3 e S quer pelos teores anómalos e elevada variação espacial, quer pela sua importância como traçadores das atividades vitícolas e alguns como potenciais contaminantes. O Cu é o elemento potencialmente contaminante com mais destaque, visto que os seus teores são consideravelmente elevados nos solos e, a par, o P e N tendem a apresentar teores mais elevados na vinha mais velha, o que pode indicar efeitos de acumulação. Já os nitratos são mais elevados na vinha mais nova, visto que os processos de acumulação são mais difíceis neste caso devido à sua alta solubilidade e mobilidade. Apesar da elevada aplicação de S nas vinhas, os teores nestes solos são mais baixos do que nos solos sem atividades vitícolas, o que pode dever-se à sua baixa temperatura de sublimação e migração para níveis mais profundos dos solos. As baixas concentrações determinadas nos sedimentos e águas permitem concluir que as práticas vitícolas não parecem estar a interferir na qualidade dos mesmos. Contudo, novas campanhas de amostragem, abrangendo períodos sazonais distintos e próximos de épocas de aplicação de fertilizantes e pesticidas, deverão ser realizadas para validação temporal destes resultados.

The vineyard culture, in the Southwest of Paraná, has faced an evolution in recently years. However, some technical barriers has contained the expression of its full potential. Among which, the lack of scientific and technical support about the fertilization management and the fertility maintenance of production fields, is the most worrying. This fact, allied with the raising on the consumers demand for ecological correct products, are the motivations for the present study, whose main objective was to evaluate the effects of different fertilizer formulations, based on alternative nutrient sources, on grapevine yield and grape fruit quality, aiming at the improvement of those parameters and the maintenance of soil fertility. To achieve this goal, an experiment has been evaluated since 2008, at the experimental area of the Federal Technological University of Paraná, Campus Pato Branco, where ten treatments were being tested, combining or isolating shale derivates from other alternative nutrient sources. Those are the treatments: T1: Gafsa Rock Phosphate (GRP) + K2SO4; T2: GRP + RPB (Rock Powder Bioland®); T3: GRP + K2SO4 + LH (Laying Hen Litter); T4: GRP+ RPB + LH; T5: GRP + K2SO4 + MBR (Matrix Shale 3); T6: GRP + RPB + MBR; T7: GRP + K2SO4 + MBR + LH; T8: GRP + RPB + LH + MBR; T9: TSP (Triple Superphosphate) + Urea + KCl and T10: absolute control. The usage of fertilization, specially the alternative fertilization, improved soil fertility characteristics and also the yield on the last two evaluated harvests. The potassium sulfate improved the potassium availability on soil, while improved yield on the last three harvests. The MBR improved the phosphorus availability, improved post-harvest conservation and improved the yield on the last evaluated harvest.

Fungal fruit rots and insect pests are among the most important problems negatively affecting the yield and quality of mid-Atlantic wine. In pathogenicity trials of fungi recovered from diseased Chardonnay and Vidal blanc grapes, Alternaria alternata, Pestalotiopsis telopeae, and Aspergillus japonicus were found to be unreported fruit rot pathogens in the region. Additionally, P. telopeae and A. japonicus had comparable virulence to the region’s common fruit rot pathogens. Furthermore, a timed-exclusion field study was implemented to evaluate vineyard insect-fruit rot relationships. It was found that clusters exposed to early-season insect communities that included Paralobesia viteana had a significantly greater incidence of sour rot than clusters protected from insects all season. These results were contrary to the current assumption that fall insects are the primary drivers of sour rot in the region. This research provides diagnostic tools and information to develop management-strategies against fungal and insect pests for mid-Atlantic grape growers.

The aim of this work was to analyse the effects of leaf removal on Touriga Nacional berry temperature and consequent thermal efficiency for anthocyanins biosynthesis. The field experiment was located at Dão Wine Research Station, Nelas, Portugal in an adult vineyard planted with North-South oriented rows, with the red grape variety Touriga Nacional grafted on 110R rootstock. The vines were trained on a vertical shoot positioning, spur-pruned on a bilateral Royat cordon system and deficit irrigated (50% ETc). The experimental design was a randomized complete block design with four replications of twelve vines per elemental plot, and the following two treatments: basal leaf removal (LR) and a control non-defoliated (ND). Berry temperature (Tb) was measured continuously during the second half (3rd to 19th September) of the 2009 ripening period using two-junction, fine-wires copper-constantan thermocouples manually inserted into the berries and connected to a data logger. A sample of clusters located in different canopy positions (exposed and internal; facing East and West) of 4 vines per treatment were used. To quantify the effect of Tb on anthocyanins biosynthesis, the berry hourly mean temperatures were converted into normal heat hours (NHH) and accumulated per day (NHHd) and per monitoring period (NHHc). For quantification of thermal requirements for anthocyanins synthesis and accumulation, a minimum of 10°C, a maximum of 35°C, and an optimum of 26°C were used. Meteorological variables were measured at an automatic weather station installed within the experimental plot. For all days of the monitoring period, daily average berry temperature (dTb) of all monitored berries was lower in ND treatment than in LR, being the maximum differences between treatments registered on 11th September. The highest dTb differences between treatments were registered on the clusters located at the west side of the canopy on 7th September while dTb of the clusters located in the centre of the canopy was less affected by leaf removal. The control non-defoliated treatment (ND) presented a significantly higher NHHc than that of LR being the higher differences presented by the clusters located in the west side. The lowest differences in NHHc were obtained in the clusters located in the centre of the canopy. Our results show that the thermal efficiency for berry anthocyanins accumulation was significantly affected by leaf removal and that this effect was dependent of the meteorological conditions, time of the day and berry/cluster location into the vine canopy.
