The supplementary eye fields (SEFs) are located in dorsomedial frontal cortex and contribute to high-level control of eye movements. Recordings in the SEF reveal neural activity related to vision, saccades, and fixations, and electrical stimulation in the SEF evokes saccades and fixations. Inactivations and lesions of the SEF, however, cause minimal oculomotor deficits. The SEF thus processes information relevant to eye movements and influences critical oculomotor centers but seems unnecessary for generating action. Instead, the SEF has overarching, subtle functions that include limb-eye coordination, the timing and sequencing of actions, learning, monitoring conflict, prediction, supervising behavior, value-based decision making, and the monitoring of decisions.

Parking is often underpriced and expanding its capacity is expensive; universities need a better way of reducing congestion outside of building costly parking garages. Demand based pricing mechanisms, such as auctions, offer a possible solution to the problem by promising to reduce parking at peak times. However, faculty, students, and staff at universities have systematically different parking needs, leading to different parking valuations. In this study, I determine the impact university affiliation has on predicting bid values cast in three Dutch Auctions of on-campus parking permits sold at Chapman University in Fall 2010. Using clustering techniques crosschecked with university demographic information to detect affiliation groups, I ran a log-linear regression, finding that university affiliation had a larger effect on bid amount than on lot location and fraction of auction duration. Generally, faculty were predicted to have higher bids whereas students were predicted to have lower bids.

As Corporate Reputation (CR) evolves into an important asset for organizations, crises and disasters stand as threats to the preservation of the reputation capital since they usually result to negative projections to their audiences and to problematic evaluations by their stakeholders. Viewing CR as the accumulated trust and positive evaluations of the stakeholders, this paper proposes a conceptual and normative framework for Reputation Continuity, which enhances the ability of organizations to preserve their reputation, instead of working for its recovery in the post-crisis period. In our approach, we propose a process of maintaining trusted links, instead of restoring them and establishing a reputation resilient organization, instead of one struggling to recover from reputation losses, after the crisis has emerged. Working closely with stakeholders during the crisis, injecting a sense of normality continuity through effective leadership and mitigating image problems are seen as critical concerns, alongside a set of managerial practices to be followed. Ultimately, it is argued that, the value-based and strategically integrated view of Business Continuity must be enhanced and supported by Reputation Continuity activities.

Das vorgestellte Forschungsprojekt will einen Beitrag leisten, Möglichkeiten wertorientierten Lernens im Geographieunterricht zu reflektieren. Mit der dokumentarischen Methode wird hier erstmals eine Forschungsmethode in einer geographiedidaktischen Studie eingesetzt, die angemessen komplex ist, das Feld des wertorientierten Lernens evaluativ zu erfassen. Dominieren hier bislang ausschließlich kognitive Forschungsansätze, so können mit der dokumentarischen Methode nicht nur explizite Bewertungen, sondern auch implizite Wertorientierungen methodisch kontrolliert rekonstruiert werden, um so adäquate Schlussfolgerungen für wertorientierten Geographieunterricht zu ziehen. The study of maturation and spawning of the oyster is part of a research program to investigate the summer mortalities of the oysters, Crassostrea gigas in Marennes-Oléron Bay. Four maturity stages were simultaneously obtained by diet and thermal conditioning (immature, low maturation, mature and post-spawning stages). Measurements of clearance, filtration, absorption and respiration rates allowed a calculation of the scope for growth and hence an estimation of the oyster's energetic budget at various maturity stages. Male and female oysters had similar physiological responses. The filtration rate ranged from 2.4 to 2.6 1.h(-1) at the early stages of maturation and decreased to 1.8 1.h.' during the maturity stage. Growth rate resulting from gonad development did not induce filtration rate changes. Mature 2.5 and 1.5-year-old oysters showed a negative energy budget reaching -15 and -90 J.h(-1) respectively. By contrast, non-ripe oysters had scope for growth in the range 110 to 170 J.h(-1). A negative energy budget during the high maturation stage resulted from a reduced absorption efficiency. A new allometric relationship for the respiration model of C. gigas was defined during vitellogenesis with a 0.574 coefficient value. Based on Our results, the oyster's physiological weakness during vitellogenesis should be considered as a part of explanation for spring and summer mortalities of cultured oysters in Marennes-Oléron Bay.

Alcohol is one of the oldest and most widely used drugs on the planet, but the cellular mechanisms by which it affects neural function are still poorly understood. Unlike other drugs of abuse, alcohol has no specific receptor in the nervous system, but is believed to operate through GABAergic and serotonergic neurotransmitter systems. Invertebrate models offer circuits of reduced numerical complexity and involve the same cell types and neurotransmitter systems as vertebrate circuits. The well-understood neural circuits controlling crayfish escape behavior offer neurons that are modulated by GABAergic inhibition, thus making tail-flip circuitry an effective circuit model to study the cellular mechanisms of acute alcohol exposure. Crayfish are capable of two stereotyped, reflexive escape behaviors known as tail-flips that are controlled by two different pairs of giant interneurons, the lateral giants (LG) and the medial giants (MG). The LG circuit has been an established model in the neuroscience field for more than 60 years and is almost completely mapped out. In contrast, the MG is still poorly understood, but has important behavioral implications in social behavior and value-based decision making. In this dissertation, I show that both crayfish tail-flip circuitry are physiologically sensitive to relevant alcohol concentrations and that this sensitivity is observable on the single cell level. I also show that this ethyl alcohol (EtOH) sensitivity in the LG can be changed by altering the crayfish’s recent social experience and by removing descending inputs to the LG. While the MG exhibits similar physiological sensitivity, its inhibitory properties have never been studied before this research. Through the use of electrophysiological and pharmacological techniques, I show that the MG exhibits many similar inhibitory properties as the LG that appear to be the result of GABA-mediated chloride currents. Finally, I present evidence that the EtOH-induced changes in the MG are blocked through pre-treatment of the potent GABAA receptor agonist, muscimol, which underlines the role of GABA in EtOH’s effects on crayfish tail-flip circuitry. The work presented here opens the way for crayfish tail-flip circuitry to be used as an effective model for EtOH’s acute effects on aggression and value-based decision making.

Introducción: Siendo la desnutrición infantil, un indicador trazador en el perfil de salud de una población y prioridad establecida por los objetivos de desarrollo del milenio y el plan decenal de salud pública en Colombia - PDSP en su dimensión de seguridad alimentaria y nutricional, mantiene gran prevalencia a nivel nacional a pesar de presentar subregistro en la información reportada, por ende, es prioridad la medición, notificación y tratamiento de la misma. La OMS estandarizó los parámetros de medición y el gobierno nacional los adoptó mediante la resolución 2121 de 2010. Sin embargo, para disminuir el indicador de desnutrición que al año 2015 debería estar reducido en un 50% según el PDSP, es necesario identificar el sub registro que hay en el diagnóstico de la misma. Metodología: Se realizó un estudio poblacional, descriptivo y transversal, en el cual se analizó la base de datos de los niños menores de 5 años asistentes a consulta de crecimiento y desarrollo en una institución de salud del municipio de Puerto Inírida, con el fin de realizar una caracterización nutricional basados en mediciones antropométricas y contrastándolas realizadas por los profesionales de salud con las encontradas utilizando los patrones establecidos por la OMS. La información se analizó con el Software WHO Anthro propiedad de la OMS. Resultados: Se encontró que el 33,6% de los menores de 5 años registrados presentan desnutrición crónica, el 7,6% desnutrición aguda, el 13,2% de desnutrición global y el 13,9% tiene obesidad. Al discriminarlo por edad se encontró mayor prevalencia de desnutrición crónica en ambos sexos, siendo mayor en población de sexo masculino (40,1% masculino – 27,6% femenino); al igual que al realizar la comparación por pertenencia puesto que se encuentra la misma prevalencia en desnutrición crónica (29,1% en población indígena y 29% en población no indígena). Según los estándares de la OMS, en la población estudiada 12 se identificaron 243 casos de malnutrición, mientras que en la consulta de crecimiento y desarrollo fueron diagnosticados como casos de malnutrición por los profesionales de salud solo 99. Discusión: La malnutrición es un problema estructural, por ende, se deben tener en cuenta factores tanto intrínsecos como extrínsecos de la persona. Las medidas antropométricas son sólo una manera de medir, que se debe contextualizar con el entorno y las condiciones socioeconómicas, patológicas y culturales en las que se encuentre la población. El estado nutricional de los menores asistentes a los controles de crecimiento y desarrollo de la población estudiada, se encuentra mal registrado, de la misma manera se encontró una gran prevalencia de desnutrición crónica que es un determinante en la calidad de vida. Es imperante la implementación de políticas públicas adecuadas que permitan profundizar en las causas de este flagelo y así mismo en su tratamiento.

La propuesta de crear una nueva línea de investigación basada en temas de Administración en Salud nación de la necesidad de ampliar la fundamentación temática impartida en este tema, dado que hoy en día la Universidad del Rosario cuenta con cuatro especializaciones y una maestría enfocadas en la Administración en Salud. El proyecto inicia con una fundamentación teórica basada en temáticas impartidas en grandes escuelas de negocios a nivel mundial que tengan en sus enfoques la Administración en Salud. Esto permitió recolectar gran cantidad de información que serviría de base para posteriormente generar la propuesta de investigación. Seguido de esto se realizó el análisis de los trabajos de grado realizado tanto en la maestría como en las Especializaciones de la Universidad del Rosario enfocadas en este tema, generando así revisión temática de estos estudios y sus respectivos aportes. Esto con el fin de poder realizar una comparación temática entre las escuelas de negocios del mundo y los estudio impartidos por la Universidad del Rosario, lo cual abriría paso a generar una lista temática para la propuesta de la línea de investigación. Una vez realizada la fundamentación teórica y la revisión de los trabajos de grado tanto de Maestría como de Especialización, se definió la propuesta de la línea de investigación la cual se estableció en dos partes fundamentales: Concepción de la línea de investigación y construcción de la línea de investigación, en donde se definió un nombre, un objetivo, una jerarquía, una propuesta temáticas, unos lineamientos generales y se definieron unos entregables a realizar por parte de los integrantes de la línea de investigación. Concluyendo así la viabilidad de la creación de la línea de investigación en la Universidad del Rosario, dada la necesidad requerida

La atención hospitalaria en el costo global de la atención de los pacientes en diálisis es muy importante. Este estudio se realizó con el fin de evaluar resultados posteriores a la implementación de un modelo de gestión de la enfermedad y cuidado coordinado en una red de diálisis en Colombia, evaluando los cambios específicos en las tasas de hospitalización de una cohorte de pacientes renales con dos años de seguimiento. El modelo se enfoca básicamente en mejorar la atención de los pacientes en diálisis protocolizando en el manejo de comorbilidades (diabetes, riesgo cardiovascular, patologías infecciosas) y en el cuidado coordinado entre el tratamiento ambulatorio y hospitalario de los pacientes en diálisis asegurando la continuidad en el proceso de atención de los pacientes. El Estudio observacional analítico de cohortes compuesto por 2 fases una primera cohorte histórica retrospectiva y una segunda con dos cohortes prospectivas, incluyó pacientes mayores de 18 años, con más de 90 días en diálisis, con al menos tres meses de intervención con el modelo de gestión de enfermedad en la red Renal Therapy Services (RTS®). En conclusión, la realización de este estudio, se pudo asociar a la reducción en la atención hospitalaria de pacientes en diálisis y a una menor mortalidad, modelos como este y otras soluciones para mejorar los desenlaces en salud en los pacientes en diálisis deben seguir siendo implementados para aliviar la carga de la enfermedad y reducir los costos de la atención en salud de esta población.

The outcome of the inductive decision -making process of the leading project management group (PMG) was the proposal to develop three modules, Human Resource Management and Knowledge Management, Quality Management and Intercultural management, each for 10 ECTS credits. As a result of the theoretical and organisational framework and analytical phase of the project, four strategies informed the development and implemen- tation of the modules: 1. Collaboration as a principle stemming from EU collaborative policy and receiving it’s expression on all implementation levels (designing the modules, modes of learning, delivering the modules, evaluation process). 2. Building on the Bologna process masters level framework to assure ap- propriate academic level of outputs. 3. Development of value -based leadership of students through transforma- tional learning in a cross -cultural setting and continual reflection of theory in practice. 4. Continual evaluation and feedback among teachers and students as a strategy to achieve a high quality programme. In the first phase of designing the modules the collaborative strategy in particular was applied, as each module was led by one university, but members from all other universities participated in the discussions and development of the mod- ules. The Bologna process masters level framework and related standards and guidelines informed the form and method of designing the modules.

In many product categories, unit prices facilitate price comparisons across brands and package sizes; this enables consumers to identify those products that provide the greatest value. However in other product categories, unit prices may be confusing. This is because there are two types of unit pricing, measure-based and usage-based. Measure-based unit prices are what the name implies; price is expressed in cents or dollars per unit of measure (e.g. ounce). Usage-based unit prices, on the other hand, are expressed in terms of cents or dollars per use (e.g., wash load or serving). The results of this study show that in two different product categories (i.e., laundry detergent and dry breakfast cereal), measure-based unit prices reduced consumers’ ability to identify higher value products, but when a usage-based unit price was provided, their ability to identify product value was increased. When provided with both a measure-based and a usage-based unit price, respondents did not perform as well as when they were provided only a usage-based unit price, additional evidence that the measure-based unit price hindered consumers’ comparisons. Finally, the presence of two potential moderators, education about the meaning of the two measures and having to rank order the options in the choice set in terms of value before choosing, did not eliminate these effects.

This paper analyzes the potential of one-step transfer prices based on either variable or full costs for coordinating decentralized production and quality-improving investment decisions. Transfer prices based on variable costs fail to induce investments on the upstream stage. In contrast, transfer prices based on full costs provide strong investment incentives for the upstream divisions. However, they fail to coordinate the investment decisions. We show that negotiations prevent such coordination failure. In particular, we find that the firm benefits from a higher degree of decentralization so that total profit increases in the number of parameters being subject to negotiations.

Smart grid technologies have given rise to a liberalised and decentralised electricity market, enabling energy providers and retailers to have a better understanding of the demand side and its response to pricing signals. This paper puts forward a reinforcement-learning-powered tool aiding an electricity retailer to define the tariff prices it offers, in a bid to optimise its retail strategy. In a competitive market, an energy retailer aims to simultaneously increase the number of contracted customers and its profit margin. We have abstracted the problem of deciding on a tariff price as faced by a retailer, as a semi-Markov decision problem (SMDP). A hierarchical reinforcement learning approach, MaxQ value function decomposition, is applied to solve the SMDP through interactions with the market. To evaluate our trading strategy, we developed a retailer agent (termed AstonTAC) that uses the proposed SMDP framework to act in an open multi-agent simulation environment, the Power Trading Agent Competition (Power TAC). An evaluation and analysis of the 2013 Power TAC finals show that AstonTAC successfully selects sell prices that attract as many customers as necessary to maximise the profit margin. Moreover, during the competition, AstonTAC was the only retailer agent performing well across all retail market settings.
