Mapania sapuaniana, a spectacular new sedge species from Lanjak Entimau, Sarawak, is described and illustrated. It is closely related to M. richardsii and M. bomeensis but differs in having broad leaves with a distinct pseudopetiole, reddish purple or maroon coloration on the underside of the leaf and petiole and an inflorescence composed of several spikes.

A new species of cubozoan jellyfish has been discovered in shallow waters of Bonaire, Netherlands ( Dutch Caribbean). Thus far, approximately 50 sightings of the species, known commonly as the Bonaire banded box jelly, are recorded, and three specimens have been collected. Three physical encounters between humans and the species have been reported. Available evidence suggests that a serious sting is inflicted by this medusa. To increase awareness of the scientific disciplines of systematics and taxonomy, the public has been involved in naming this new species. The Bonaire banded box jelly, Tamoya ohboya, n. sp., can be distinguished from its close relatives T. haplonema from Brazil and T. sp. from the southeastern United States by differences in tentacle coloration, cnidome, and mitochondrial gene sequences. Tamoya ohboya n. sp. possesses striking dark brown to reddish-orange banded tentacles, nematocyst warts that densely cover the animal, and a deep stomach. We provide a detailed comparison of nematocyst data from Tamoya ohboya n. sp., T. haplonema from Brazil, and T. sp. from the Gulf of Mexico.

A new species of Neotropical freshwater stingray, family Potamotrygonidae, is described from the Rio Nanay in the upper Rio Amazonas basin of Peru. Potamotrygon tigrina, n. sp., is easily distinguished from all congeners by its conspicuous dorsal disc coloration, composed of bright yellow to orange vermiculations strongly interwoven with a dark-brown to deep-black background. Additional features that in combination diagnose P. tigrina, n. sp., include the presence of a single angular cartilage, low and not closely grouped dorsal tail spines, and coloration of tail composed of relatively wide and alternating bands of creamy white and dark brown to black. Potamotrygon tigrina is closely related to Potamotrygon schroederi Fernandez-Yepez, 1958, which occurs in the Rio Negro (Brazil) and Rio Orinoco (Venezuela, Colombia). Both species are very similar in proportions and counts, and share features hypothesized to be derived within Potamotrygonidae, related to their specific angular cartilage morphology, distal tail color, dorsal tail-spine pattern, and ventral lateral-line system. To further substantiate the description of P. tigrina, n. sp., we provide a redescription of P. schroederi based on material from the Rio Negro (Brazil) and Rio Orinoco (Venezuela). Specimens from the two basins differ in number of vertebral centra and slightly in size and frequency of rosettes on dorsal disc, distinctions that presently do not warrant their specific separation. Potamotrygon tigrina is frequently commercialized in the international aquarium trade but virtually nothing is known of its biology or conservation status.

Philodryas laticeps Werner, 1900 was previously known only from the holotype, which was believed to be lost during the World Wars. We found the holotype to be housed in the Museum fur Naturkunde, Berlin and here redescribe it and report on three additional specimens from the collections of the Instituto Butantan, Sao Paulo and Museum fur Naturkunde, Berlin. We conclude that Philodryas oligolepis Gomes, 1921 and P. affinis Muller, 1928 are junior synonyms of Philodryas laticeps Werner, 1900. All specimens share the presence of a black mucosa surrounding the larynx and trachea in the floor of the mouth and distal rows of middle sized spines disposed in a typical ""V-shaped"" configuration on the asulcate surface of the hemipenial body, two uniquely derived features absent in all other species of the genus Philodryas. Intraspecific variation of external morphology, hemipenes, and coloration are documented.

Hemiancistrus pankimpuju, new species, and Panaque bathyphilus, new species, are described from the main channel of the upper (Maranon) and middle (Solimoes)Amazon River, respectively. Both species are diagnosed by having a nearly white body, long filamentous extensions of both simple caudal-fin rays, small eyes, absence of an iris operculum and unique combinations of morphometrics. The coloration and morphology of these species, unique within Loricariidae, are hypothesized to be apomorphies associated with life in the dark, turbid depths of the Amazon mainstem. Extreme elongation of the caudal filaments in these and a variety of other main channel catfishes is hypothesized to have a mechanosensory function associated with predator detection.

A new species of the tree toad genus Dendrophryniscus is described from a rainforest habitat at Parque Nacional de Serra das Lontras, municipality of Arataca, southern Bahia, Brazil. Dendrophryniscus oreites sp. nov. is related to the Atlantic forest brevipollicatus group by hand morphology, skin texture, ventral coloration and bromelicolous habits. The new species differs from related species by having a larger size, warty skin, inner finger reduced with presence of a dark nuptial pad in males, and a yellowish coloration with discrete dorsal pattern. This discovery highlights the importance of southern Bahia in terms of conservation, and for our understanding of the evolution of the frog diversity within the Atlantic Rainforest.

In the last ten to fifteen years, there has been a predominant belief that the linear-supralinear-sublinear behaviour of the TL response of alkali halides to the radiation dose necessarily occurs in the heating stage for TL reading. It is based on the assumption that coloration in these crystals grows linear-sublinearly with the dose during irradiation. Since both colour centre and TL centre are based on the same point defects the TL response should also grow linear-sublinearly with dose. In 1950, half a dozen authors showed that the coloration of F-centres in KCl takes place in two stages, the second one being responsible for non-linear behaviour. In this paper, we show that indeed in NaCl both F-centre and TL grow linear-supralinear-sublinearly with the dose during irradiation.

Vitreous samples containing high concentrations of WO3 (above 40% M) have been used as a target to prepare thin films. Such films were deposited using the electron beam evaporation method onto soda-lime glass substrates. These films were characterized by X-ray diffraction (XRD), perfilometry, X-ray energy dispersion spectroscopy (EDS), M-Lines and UV-vis absorption spectroscopy. In this work, experimental parameters were established to obtain stable thin films showing a chemical composition close to the glass precursor composition and with a high concentration of WO3. These amorphous thin films of about 4 mu m in thickness exhibit a deep blue coloration but they can be bleached by thermal treatment near the glass transition temperature. Such bleached films show several guided modes in the visible region and have a high refractive index. Controlled crystallization was realized and thus it was possible to obtain WO3 microcrystals in the amorphous phase. (C) 2007 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

Schistosoma mansoni is a well-adapted blood-dwelling parasitic helminth, persisting for decades in its human host despite being continually exposed to potential immune attack. Here, we describe in detail micro-exon genes (MEG) in S. mansoni, some present in multiple copies, which represent a novel molecular system for creating protein variation through the alternate splicing of short (<= 36 bp) symmetric exons organized in tandem. Analysis of three closely related copies of one MEG family allowed us to trace several evolutionary events and propose a mechanism for micro-exon generation and diversification. Microarray experiments show that the majority of MEGs are up-regulated in life cycle stages associated with establishment in the mammalian host after skin penetration. Sequencing of RT-PCR products allowed the description of several alternate splice forms of micro-exon genes, highlighting the potential use of these transcripts to generate a complex pool of protein variants. We obtained direct evidence for the existence of such pools by proteomic analysis of secretions from migrating schistosomula and mature eggs. Whole-mount in situ hybridization and immunolocalization showed that MEG transcripts and proteins were restricted to glands or epithelia exposed to the external environment. The ability of schistosomes to produce a complex pool of variant proteins aligns them with the other major groups of blood parasites, but using a completely different mechanism. We believe that our data open a new chapter in the study of immune evasion by schistosomes, and their ability to generate variant proteins could represent a significant obstacle to vaccine development.

Layer-by-layer (LbL) films from K(2)Nb(6)O(17)(2-) and polyallylamine (PAH) and dip-coating films of H(2)K(2)Nb(6)O(17) were prepared on a fluorine-doped tin-oxide (FTO)-coated glass. The atomic force microscopy (AFM) images were carried out for morphological characterization of both materials. The real surface area and the roughness factor were determined on the basis of pseudocapacitive processes involved in the electroreduction/electrooxidation of gold layers deposited on these films. Next, lithium ion insertion into these materials was examined by means of electrochemical and spectroelectrochemical measurements. More specifically, cyclic voltammetry and current pulses under visible light beams were used to investigate mass transport and chromogenic properties. The lithium ion diffusion coefficient (D(Li)) within the LbL matrix is significantly higher than that within the dip-coating film, ensuring high storage capacity of lithium ions in the self-assembled electrode. Contrary to the LbL film, the potentiodynamic profile of absorbance change (Delta A) as a function of time is not similar to that obtained in the case of current density for the dip-coating film. Aiming at analyzing the rate of the coloration front associated with lithium ion diffusion, a spectroelectrochemical method based on the galvanostatic intermittent titration technique (GITT) was employed so as to determine the ""optical"" diffusion coefficient (D(op)). In the dip-coating film, the method employed here revealed that the lithium ion rate is higher in diffusion pathways formed from K(2)Nb(6)O(17)(2-) sites that contribute more significantly to Delta A. Meanwhile, the presence of PAH contributed to the increased ionic mobility in diffusion pathways in the LbL film, with low contribution to the electrochromic efficiency. These results aided a better understanding of the potentiodynamic profile of the temporal change of absorbance and current density during the insertion/deinsertion of lithium ions into the electrochromic materials.

The present paper describes the immobilization of nanoparticles onto conducting substrates by using both electrostatic layer-by-layer and electrophoretic deposition (EPD) methods. These two techniques were compared in high-performance electrochromic electrodes based on mixed nickel hydroxide nanoparticles. In addition to easy handling, EPD seems to be the most suitable method for the immobilization of nanoparticles, leading to higher electrochromic efficiencies, lower response times and higher stability upon coloration and bleaching cycling. Schistosomiasis is one of the world`s greatly neglected tropical diseases, and its control is largely dependent on a single drug, praziquantel. Here, we report the in vitro effect of piplartine, an amide isolated from Piper tuberculatum (Piperaceae), on Schistosoma mansoni adult worms. A piplartine concentration of 15.8 mu M reduced the motor activity of worms and caused their death within 24 h in a RPMI 1640 medium. Similarly, the highest sub-lethal concentration of piplartine (6.3 mu M) caused a 75% reduction in egg production in spite of coupling. Additionally, piplartine induced morphological changes on the tegument, and a quantitative analysis carried out by confocal microscopy revealed an extensive tegumental destruction and damage in the tubercles. This damage was dose-dependent in the range of 15.8-630.2 mu M. At doses higher than 157.6 mu M, piplartine induced morphological changes in the oral and ventral sucker regions of the worms. It is the first time that the schistosomicidal activity has been reported for piplartine. Published by Elsevier Inc.

6 x 8cm(2) electrochromic devices (ECDs) with the configuration K-glass/EC-layer/electrotype/ion-storage (IS) layer/K-glass, have been assembled using Nb2O5:Mo EC layers, a (CeO2)(0.81)-TiO2 IS-layer and a new gelatin electrolyte containing Li+ ions. The structure of the electrolyte is X-ray amorphous. Its ionic conductivity passed by a maximum of 1.5 x 10(-5) S/CM for a lithium concentration of 0.3g/15ml. The value increases with temperature and follows an Arrhenius law with an activation energy of 49.5 kJ/mol. All solid-state devices show a reversible gray coloration, a long-term stability of more than 25,000 switching cycles (+/- 2.0 V/90 s), a transmission change at 550 nm between 60% (bleached state) and 40% (colored state) corresponding to a change of the optical density (Delta OD = 0. 15) with a coloration efficiency increasing from 10cm(2)/C (initial cycle) to 23cm(2)/C (25,000th cycle). O objetivo do estudo foi avaliar as características da dentina cariada remanescente de molares decíduos quanto à coloração, consistência e microdureza, após um período médio de 3 anos e 8 meses da realização do capeamento pulpar indireto. O estudo clínico constou de 27 dentes que apresentavam lesões cariosas ativas com expressão radiográfica em metade interna de dentina. Aleatoriamente, foi realizado o capeamento pulpar indireto e utilizado como material capeador o hidróxido de cálcio (HC) e o cimento de ionômero de vidro resinoso modificado (CIVRM). As crianças foram acompanhadas através de exames clínicos e radiográficos, e ao longo de um período médio de 3 anos e 8 meses, observou-se um índice de sucesso de 89% para o grupo do HC e de 93% para o CIVRM, não havendo diferença estatisticamente significante entre os dois grupos (p=0,62). Os dentes considerados como sucesso no estudo clínico foram agrupados em um único grupo (grupo teste), que constou de 13 dentes que sofreram esfoliação natural ou exodontia por motivos ortodônticos. Além disso, foram selecionados 15 molares decíduos hígidos (grupo controle positivo) e 15, portadores de lesões cariosas ativas em metade interna de dentina (grupo controle negativo). As amostras do grupo teste tiveram suas respectivas restaurações removidas, a profundidade medida e a dentina remanescente avaliada por um operador calibrado, seguindo critérios descritivos, quanto à consistência e a coloração. Nos dentes do grupo controle positivo, foram realizados preparos cavitários oclusais em até 4 mm de profundidade, enquanto que, no grupo controle negativo, o mesmo operador do estudo clínico realizou a remoção parcial de tecido cariado in vitro. A partir daí, todos os dentes foram preparados para análise de microdureza, que foi realizada por um examinador calibrado, que empregou o princípio de cegamento. Na análise da consistência, todos os dentes do grupo teste (n=13) apresentaram-se endurecidos, enquanto que 9, apresentaram coloração amarela-clara (8 do CIVRM e 1 do HC) e 4, castanho-escura (1 do CIVRM e 3 do HC). Para o teste de microdureza no grupo teste, obteve-se uma média KHN de 40,81 (±16,28) MPa, enquanto que nos grupos controles positivo e negativo, foram alcançados valores médios de 62,73 (±11,24) MPa e 19,15 (±6,99) MPa, respectivamente. A análise estatística mediante o teste ANOVA indicou que houve diferença significativa entre os 3 grupos. Foi constatada a remineralização da dentina de dentes decíduos em que foi realizada a técnica do capeamento pulpar indireto após um período médio de 3 anos e 8 meses, através de critérios clínico (consistência) e laboratorial (análise da microdureza).

A cinza de casca de arroz é um resíduo agro-industrial decorrente do processo de queima da casca de arroz, sendo largamente encontrada no Rio Grande do Sul, pois, historicamente, este Estado é o maior produtor de arroz no Brasil, com cerca de 45% da produção nacional. Empregada como fonte de energia, a casca de arroz é queimada em diversas empresas; algumas, devido à sua natureza, incorporam a cinza ao produto, mas a maioria não encontra outro destino que não o descarte em forma de aterro, criando, assim, um problema ambiental de poluição do solo, do ar e de rios e córregos. No entanto, devido à presença de elevado percentual de sílica (SiO2) na sua constituição, a cinza de casca de arroz pode ter vários empregos. Na construção civil, pode ser empregada como pozolana, conforme vários estudos já vêm demonstrando. Porém, encontra restrições por motivos como sua cor escura, que confere aos cimentos, argamassas e concretos aos quais é adicionada, uma coloração também escura, e a falta de uniformidade apresentada em termos de características químicas e, principalmente, mineralógicas. A cor escura não é um problema de ordem técnica, mas estética e de aceitação no mercado. Já a composição mineralógica está associada à atividade pozolânica e a falta de uniformidade do material disponível implica na incerteza do grau de reatividade. Este trabalho teve o objetivo de verificar a viabilidade técnica do emprego de cinzas de casca de arroz residuais na confecção de cimentos Portland composto e/ou pozolânico, a partir de beneficiamentos das mesmas, que associam tratamentos físicos, químicos e/ou térmicos, os quais têm como finalidade reverter e/ou minimizar os aspectos negativos citados. Para tanto, foram empregadas três cinzas de casca de arroz, oriundas de diferentes processos de produção e com composições mineralógicas distintas. Após definidos os tratamentos a serem aplicados, através de seleção pelos critérios de cor e composição mineralógica, as cinzas tratadas foram avaliadas quanto à sua pozolanicidade, pelo Índice de Atividade Pozolânica (IAP) da NBR 5752 e também por um IAP alterado, proposto neste trabalho. A produção de cimentos com CCA beneficiada se deu a partir de um cimento base com substituição por CCA, em massa e em diferentes percentuais. Tais cimentos foram avaliados quanto à resistência à compressão, aos tempos de pega, à pozolanicidade e à expansibilidade a quente. A análise dos dados obtidos indica que os tratamentos propostos e/ou a associação deles resultam em beneficio no desempenho das cinzas, em pelo menos um dos vários aspectos considerados. A presente pesquisa permite concluir que as CCA residuais têm potencial para serem empregadas na produção de cimentos, tanto aquelas menos cristalinas, quanto as mais cristalinas. Para tanto, devem ser beneficiadas, sendo pelo menos submetidas a tratamento físico para redução de sua granulometria. Se outros objetivos forem pretendidos, como coloração clara, os tratamentos térmico ou químico podem ser empregados.
