Catalytic cracking of butene to propene and ethene was investigated over HMCM-22 zeolite. The performance of HMCM-22 zeolite was markedly influenced by time-on-stream (TOS) and reaction conditions. A rapid deactivation during the first I h reaction, followed by a quasi-plateau in activity, was observed in the process along with significant changes in product distributions, which can be attributed to the fast coking process occurring in the large supercages of MCM-22.

The objective of this research was to investigate the synthesis of nitrile oxides and to study their reactivity in 1,3-dipolar cycloadditions with formamidines. Chapter one looks at the literature surrounding the 1,3-dipolar cycloaddition reaction. It explores the generation of 1,3-dipoles (mainly nitrile oxides) and dipolarophiles (predominantly amidines). It discusses the potential synthetic uses of the 1,3-dipolar cycloadducts. It examines both and inter- and intra-molecular cycloaddition reactions. It recognises the use of the 1,3-dipolar cycloadditions as a successful method in building natural products and oxadiazolines. The decomposition of oxadiazolines as a route to nitriles is also outlined in this chapter. Chapter two discusses the results of this research candidate. The preparation of nitrile oxide precursors - hydroximoyl halides - is outlined at first. The generation of nitrile oxides is then demonstrated, followed by the preparation of furoxans. Methods for preparing the reference materials (nitriles and ureas), which result from decomposition of oxadiazolines, then follow. The preparation of series of Δ2-1,2,4- oxadiazolines via the 1,3-dipolar cycloaddition reaction is illustrated in this chapter. The selectivity of the addition of nitrile oxides to dipolarophiles was tested by competition reactions, which are also described in this chapter. NMR techniques were used in the study of the kinetics of the 1,3-dipolar cycloadditions used for the preparation of a series of Δ2-1,2,4-oxadiazolines, which is addressed in this chapter. Chapter three charts the experimental procedures followed to gain results which are discussed in chapter two. It also outlines all analytical data produced during the course of this research.

The first definitive high-resolution single-crystal X-ray structure for the coordination of the 1-methylimidazole (Meimid) ligand to UO2(Ac)2 (Ac = CH3CO2) is reported. The crystal structure evidence is confirmed by IR, Raman, and UV-vis spectroscopic data. Direct participation of the nitrogen atom of the Meimid ligand in binding to the uranium center is confirmed. Structural analysis at the DFT (B3LYP) level of theory showed a conformational difference of the Meimid ligand in the free gas-phase complex versus the solid state due to small energetic differences and crystal packing effects. Energetic analysis at the MP2 level in the gas phase supported stronger Meimid binding over H2O binding to both UO2(Ac)2 and UO2(NO3)2. In addition, self-consistent reaction field COSMO calculations were used to assess the aqueous phase energetics of combination and displacement reactions involving H2O and Meimid ligands to UO2R2 (R = Ac, NO3). For both UO2(NO3)2 and UO2(Ac)2, the displacement of H2O by Meimid was predicted to be energetically favorable, consistent with experimental results that suggest Meimid may bind uranyl at physiological pH. Also, log(Knitrate/KAc) calculations supported experimental evidence that the binding stoichiometry of the Meimid ligand is dependent upon the nature of the reactant uranyl complex. These results clearly demonstrate that imidazole binds to uranyl and suggest that binding of histidine residues to uranyl could occur under normal biological conditions.

The hydroformylation of 1-octene under continuous flow conditions is described. The system involves dissolving the catalyst, made in situ from [ Rh(acac)(CO)(2)] (acacH = 2,4- pentanedione) and [RMIM][TPPMS] ( RMIM = 1-propyl (Pr), 1-pentyl (Pn) or 1-octyl (O)-3-methyl imidazolium, TPPMS = Ph2P(3-C6H4SO3)), in a mixture of nonanal and 1-octene and passing the substrate, 1-octene, together with CO and H-2 through the system dissolved in supercritical CO2 (scCO(2)). [PrMIM][TPPMS] is poorly soluble in the medium so heavy rhodium leaching (as complexes not containing phosphine) occurs in the early part of the reaction. [PnMIM][ PPMS] affords good rates at relatively low catalyst loadings and relatively low overall pressure (125 bar) with rhodium losses <1 ppm, but the catalyst precipitates at higher catalyst loadings, leading to lower reaction rates. [OMIM][ TPPMS] is the most soluble ligand and promotes high reaction rates, although preliminary experiments suggested that rhodium leaching was high at 5-10 ppm. Optimisation aimed at balancing flows so that the level within the reactor remained constant involved a reactor set up based around a reactor fitted with a sight glass and sparging stirrer with the CO2 being fed by a cooled head HPLC pump, 1-octene by a standard HPLC pump and CO/H-2 through a mass flow controller. The pressure was controlled by a back pressure regulator. Using this set up, [OMIM][ TPPMS] as the ligand and a total pressure of 140 bar, it was possible to control the level within the reactor and obtain a turnover frequency of ca. 180 h(-1). Rhodium losses in the optimised system were 100 ppb. Transport studies showed that 1-octene is preferentially transported over the aldehydes at all pressures, although the difference in mol fraction in the mobile phase was less at lower pressures. Nonanal in the mobile phase suppresses the extraction of 1-octene to some extent, so it is better to operate at high conversion and low pressure to optimise the extraction of the products relative to the substrate. CO and H2 in the mobile phase also suppress the extraction effciency by as much as 80%.

New low-cost ionic liquids containing methyl- and ethyl-sulfate anions can be easily and efficiently prepared under ambient conditions by the reaction of 1-alkylimidazoles with dimethyl sulfate and diethyl sulfate. The preparation and characterization of a series of 1,3-dialkylimidazolium alkyl sulfate and 1,2,3-trialkylimidazolium alkyl sulfate salts are reported. 1,3-Dialkylimidazolium salts containing at least one non-methyl N-alkyl substituent are liquids at, or below room, temperature. Three salts were crystalline at room temperature, the single crystal X-ray structure of 1,3-dimethylimidazolium methyl sulfate was determined and shows the formation of discrete ribbons comprising of two anion-cation hydrogen-bonded chains linked via intra-chain hydrogen-bonding, but little, or no inter-ribbon hydrogen-bonding. The salts are stable, water soluble, inherently 'chloride-free', display an electrochemical window of greater than 4 V, and can be used as alternatives to the corresponding halide salts in metathesis reactions to prepare other ionic liquids including 1-butyl-3-methylimidazolium hexafluorophosphate.

1,2-Cyclic sulfite xylosides offer facile access to 1,2-oxazolines upon reaction with aromatic and alkyl nitrites under Lewis or Bronsted acid conditions. Additionally, hydrophobic ionic liquids facilitate acid-catalysed formations of such oxazolines and C- and O-linked xylosides, providing means to carry out fast reactions at room temperature, and this in yields comparable to reactions conducted in xylene at high temperature for extended reaction time. Desmoplastic small round cell tumor is a rare malignant neoplasm mostly occurring in the vicinity of or within the peritoneal cavity, and is uncommon in the head and neck region. Tumor location within a major salivary gland is exceptional. We report a case of a 41-year-old Chinese man with a history of diabetes mellitus and end-stage renal failure on peritoneal dialysis with a desmoplastic small round cell tumor occurring in the left submandibular gland. Fine-needle aspiration cytology showed variably cohesive clusters of small cells with hyperchromatic nuclei and fine granular chromatin. On histology the neoplasm displayed classic features of a desmoplastic small round cell tumor with angulated nests of small round blue cells in a fibromyxoid/desmoplastic stroma. Neoplastic cells were immunoreactive for cytokeratins (AE1/3), desmin (paranuclear dot-like), WT-1 (nuclear), epithelial membrane antigen, and CD56. EWS gene translocation and EWS-WT1 gene fusion were detected by fluorescence in situ hybridization and reverse transcriptase polymerase chain reaction, respectively. The case presented is the sixth case of and the oldest reported patient with a desmoplastic small round cell tumor occurring in a major salivary gland to date. Desmoplastic small round cell tumor should be considered in the differential diagnosis of a salivary gland neoplasm with a basaloid or small cell pattern on fine-needle aspiration cytology.

Mechanistic analysis of the reaction between elemental sulfur or selenium and 1,3-dialkylimidazolium acetate ionic liquids, in the absence of an external base or solvent, affords evidence for the equilibrium presence of carbene species in these ionic liquids. It demonstrates the potential to control, through anion selection, the concentration of carbene in stable ionic liquids.

The electrochemical reduction of 1-bromo-4-nitrobenzene (p-BrC6H4NO2) at zinc microelectrodes in the [C(4)mPyrr][NTf2] ionic liquid was investigated via cyclic voltammetry. The reduction was found to occur via an EC type mechanism, where p-BrC6H4NO2 is first reduced by one electron, quasi-reversibly, to yield the corresponding radical anion. The radical anions then react with the Zn electrode to form arylzinc products. Introduction of carbon dioxide into the system led to reaction with the arylzinc species, fingerprinting the formation of the latter. This method thus demonstrates a proof-of-concept of the formation of functionalised arylzinc species.

Heterocyclic chalcogenones were prepd. by reaction of S, Se, or Te with ionic liqs. or salts [I; Ra = (substituted) alkyl, cycloalkyl, aryl, aralkyl, alkylaryl; Q = (unsatd.) (substituted) linker to form a ring of 5-10 members; X- = anion selected from conjugate bases of HX having a pKa value of >2.5]. Thus, 1-butyl-3-methylimidazolium acetate was heated with stoichiometric S at 75° for 48 h to give 1-butyl-3-methylimidazole-2-thione. [on SciFinder(R)]

Combining whole cell biocatalysis and chemocatalysis in a single reaction sequence avoids unnecessary separations, and the associated waste and energy consumption. Bacterial fermentation has been employed to convert waste glycerol from biodiesel production into 1,3-propanediol. This 1,3-propanediol can be extracted selectively from the aqueous fermentation broth using ionic liquids. 1,3-propanediol in ionic liquid solution was converted to propanal by hydrogen transfer initiated dehydration (HTID) catalysed by a Cp*IrCl2(NHC) (Cp* = pentamethylcyclopentadienyl; NHC = carbene ligand) complex. The use of an ionic liquid solvent enabled the reaction to be performed under reduced pressure, facilitating the isolation of the product, and improving the reaction selectivity. The Ir(III) catalyst in ionic liquid was found to be highly recyclable.

The work described in this thesis has been divided into seven sections. The first section involves the preparation of N'-acyl-N'-arylN- benzothiohydrazides by the acylation of N'-aryl-N-benzothiohydrazides and is followed by a brief discussion of their possible conformation in solution. The second section deals with the preparation of 1,3,4-thiadiazolium salts by the action of perchloric acid/acetic anhydride on N'-acylN'- aryl-N-benzothiohydrazides and also by the reaction of N'-arylN- benzothiohydrazides with nitriles in an acidic medium. The preparation of 2-methylthio-I,3,4-thiadiazolium methosulfate by methylating the corresponding thione is also described. The third section deals with the reaction of 2-phenyl- and 2-methyl-I,3,4-thiadiazolium salts with alcohols in the presence of base. The stability and spectra of these compounds are discussed. Treatment of the 2-methyl-I,3,4-thiadiazolium salt with base was found to give rise to a dimeric anhydrobase and evidence supporting its structure is given. The anhydrobase could be trapped by a variety of acylating and thioacylating agents before dimerization occurred. In the fourth section, the reaction of N'-acyl-N'-aryl-N-benzothiohydrazides with a variety of acid anhydrides is described. These compounds were found to be identical with those obtained by acylating the anhydrobase. The mass spectral fragmentation of these compounds is described and the anomolous product obtained upon thiobenzoylation of 3-methyl-l-phenyl-pyrazal-5-one is also discussed. The fifth section deals with thioacyl derivatives of the anhydrobase which were prepared by the action of phosphorus pentasulfide upon the oxygen analogues and also obtained as the major product of the reaction of thioacetic acid with compounds related to N'-aryl-N-benzothiohydrazides. The mass spectra and p.m.r. spectra of these compounds are discussed. In the sixth section, the reaction of the 2-methylthio-l,3,4- thiadiazolium salt with active methylene compounds to give acyl and diacyl derivatives of the anhydrobase is described. Some aspects of these compounds are discussed. The seventh section describes the synthesis of ncyanine~' type dyes incorporating the l,3,4-thiadiazole ring and their spectra are briefly discussed.

Boron tribalide complexes of 1,1-bis(dimethylamino)ethylene (DME) , t etramethylurea (TMU), tetramethylguanidine (TMG) , and pentamethylguanidine (PMG) and also mixed boron t r ihalide adducts of DME have been investigated by 1H and 19F NMR spectroscopy. Both nitrogen and the C-Q-H carbon of DME are possible donor a toms to boron trihal ides but complexation has been found to occur only at carbon of DME. The initial adduct acts as a Bronsted acid and gives up a proton to free DME in solut ion. A side reaction in the DME-BF, system gives rise to trace amounts of a complex aSSigned as (DME)2BF2+. (DME)2BF2+ is produced in much larger quantities in t he DME-BF3-BC13 and DME-BF,-BBr, systems by reaction of free DME with DME:BF2X (X = Cl, Br). Restricted r otation about the C-N bonds of TMUlBC13 and n1U:BBr3 has been observed at low temperatures. This complements previous work in this system and confirms oxygen donation of TMU to boron trihalides . Restricted rotation at low temperatures also has been observed in DMEboron trihalide systems
