The time series of abundance indices for many groundfish populations, as determined from trawl surveys, are often imprecise and short, causing stock assessment estimates of abundance to be imprecise. To improve precision, prior probability distributions (priors) have been developed for parameters in stock assessment models by using meta-analysis, expert judgment on catchability, and empirically based modeling. This article presents a synthetic approach for formulating priors for rockfish trawl survey catchability (qgross). A multivariate prior for qgross for different surveys is formulated by using 1) a correction factor for bias in estimating fish density between trawlable and untrawlable areas, 2) expert judgment on trawl net catchability, 3) observations from trawl survey experiments, and 4) data on the fraction of population biomass in each of the areas surveyed. The method is illustrated by using bocaccio (Sebastes paucipinis) in British Columbia. Results indicate that expert judgment can be updated markedly by observing the catch-rate ratio from different trawl gears in the same areas. The marginal priors for qgross are consistent with empirical estimates obtained by fitting a stock assessment model to the survey data under a noninformative prior for qgross. Despite high prior uncertainty (prior coefficients of variation ≥0.8) and high prior correlation between qgross, the prior for qgross still enhances the precision of key stock assessment quantities.

The Silent Aircraft airframe has a flying wing design with a large wing planform and a propulsion system embedded in the rear of the airframe with intake on the upper surface of the wing. In the present paper, boundary element calculations are presented to evaluate acoustic shielding at low frequencies. Besides the three-dimensional geometry of the Silent Aircraft airframe, a few two-dimensional problems are considered that provide some physical insight into the shielding calculations. Mean flow refraction effects due to forward flight motion are accounted for by a simple time transformation that decouples the mean-flow and acoustic-field calculations. It is shown that significant amount of shielding can be obtained in the shadow region where there is no direct line of sight between the source and observer. The boundary element solutions are restricted to low frequencies. We have used a simple physically-based model to extend the solution to higher frequencies. Based on this model, using a monopole acoustic source, we predict at least an 18 dBA reduction in the overall sound pressure level of forward-propagating fan noise because of shielding.

In this paper we explore the possibility of using the equations of a well known compact model for CMOS transistors as a parameterized compact model for a variety of FET based nano-technology devices. This can turn out to be a practical preliminary solution for system level architectural researchers, who could simulate behaviourally large scale systems, while more physically based models become available for each new device. We have used a four parameter version of the EKV model equations and verified that fitting errors are similar to those when using them for standard CMOS FET transistors. The model has been used for fitting measured data from three types of FET nano-technology devices obeying different physics, for different fabrication steps, and under different programming conditions. © 2009 IEEE NANO Organizers.

A steady-state, physically-based analytical model for the Trench Insulated Gate Bipolar Transistor which accounts for a combined PIN diode - PNP transistor carrier dynamics is proposed. Previous models (i.e. PIN model and PNP transistor model) cannot account properly for the carrier dynamics in Trench IGBT since neither the PNP transistor nor the PIN diode effect can be neglected. An optimized Trench IGBT with a large ratio between the accumulation layer and the cell size leads to substantially improved on-state characteristics, which makes the Trench IGBT potentially the most attractive device in the area of high voltage fast switching devices.

In the fluid simulation, the fluids and their surroundings may greatly change properties such as shape and temperature simultaneously, and different surroundings would characterize different interactions, which would change the shape and motion of the fluids in different ways. On the other hand, interactions among fluid mixtures of different kinds would generate more comprehensive behavior. To investigate the interaction behavior in physically based simulation of fluids, it is of importance to build physically correct models to represent the varying interactions between fluids and the environments, as well as interactions among the mixtures. In this paper, we will make a simple review of the interactions, and focus on those most interesting to us, and model them with various physical solutions. In particular, more detail will be given on the simulation of miscible and immiscible binary mixtures. In some of the methods, it is advantageous to be taken with the graphics processing unit (GPU) to achieve real-time computation for middle-scale simulation.

许多基于物理机制的水文和作物模型需要日序列气象数据来驱动,CLIGEN是为WEPP等模型产生气候输入文件的天气发生器,可以产生10个日序列气象变量来满足这种需要,但是其在中国的适用性需要进行评估。研究的目标是利用黄土高原陕西长武1957~2001年的气象数据评估CLIGEN产生非降水要素(最高温度、最低温度、露点温度、太阳辐射和风速)的能力。结果表明,CLIGEN对最高温度、最低温度和露点温度的模拟效果较好,对太阳辐射和极端气候事件的模拟效果较差,对风速的模拟效果最差。相关性检验表明CLIGEN很好地保持了气象要素的季节性,这对模拟农业生产是非常重要的;但是没有保留气象要素逐日的自相关和互相关性,进而导致产生的温度变化不符合连续渐变的规律。

文中提供了一种对植物叶子造型的新方法,可以非常真实地展现叶子在干枯、老化过程中几何形态的变化.基于植物学和物理原理,文中引入了双层结构模型表达叶子的力学结构,很好地模拟了不同种类植物叶子形状的多样性.文中首先分析了叶子形状变化的原因,即在叶子枯萎过程中,叶肉和叶脉由于各自不同的组织结构,导致了收缩比例不同,从而在物理模拟中,通过建立关于叶子基本结构的双层质点-弹簧模型,并对上下两层的不同参数的合理设置,很好地表现了叶肉和叶脉的不同力学特性.双层模型的相互作用,决定了叶子最终变形的方式和效果,由此可以得到非常接近真实树叶的各种叶子形态.

采用基于Visual C++和OpenGL的建模和运动仿真方法,对可重构星球探测机器人系统的三维运动仿真实验平台进行了研究,建立了一个多机器人系统的仿真实验平台。开发的实验平台可用于探索和验证机器人系统的工作原理、工作空间、多机器人协调算法、重构方法、系统集成技术等。在该平台上进行了机器人的运动学仿真和协调运动研究,验证了该仿真平台的有效性和机器人系统体系结构的合理性。

This dissertation presents a series of irregular-grid based numerical technique for modeling seismic wave propagation in heterogeneous media. The study involves the generation of the irregular numerical mesh corresponding to the irregular grid scheme, the discretized version of motion equations under the unstructured mesh, and irregular-grid absorbing boundary conditions. The resulting numerical technique has been used in generating the synthetic data sets on the realistic complex geologic models that can examine the migration schemes. The motion equation discretization and modeling are based on Grid Method. The key idea is to use the integral equilibrium principle to replace the operator at each grid in Finite Difference scheme and variational formulation in Finite Element Method. The irregular grids of complex geologic model is generated by the Paving Method, which allow varying grid spacing according to meshing constraints. The grids have great quality at domain boundaries and contain equal quantities of nodes at interfaces, which avoids the interpolation of parameters and variables. The irregular grid absorbing boundary conditions is developed by extending the Perfectly Matched Layer method to the rotated local coordinates. The splitted PML equations of the first-order system is derived by using integral equilibrium principle. The proposed scheme can build PML boundary of arbitrary geometry in the computational domain, avoiding the special treatment at corners in a standard PML method and saving considerable memory and computation cost. The numerical implementation demonstrates the desired qualities of irregular grid based modeling technique. In particular, (1) smaller memory requirements and computational time are needed by changing the grid spacing according to local velocity; (2) Arbitrary surfaces and interface topographies are described accurately, thus removing the artificial reflection resulting from the stair approximation of the curved or dipping interfaces; (3) computational domain is significantly reduced by flexibly building the curved artificial boundaries using the irregular-grid absorbing boundary conditions. The proposed irregular grid approach is apply to reverse time migration as the extrapolation algorithm. It can discretize the smoothed velocity model by irregular grid of variable scale, which contributes to reduce the computation cost. The topography. It can also handle data set of arbitrary topography and no field correction is needed.

Numerous problems exist that can be modeled as traffic through a network in which constraints exist to regulate flow. Vehicular road travel, computer networks, and cloud based resource distribution, among others all have natural representations in this manner. As these networks grow in size and/or complexity, analysis and certification of the safety invariants becomes increasingly costly. The NetSketch formalism introduces a lightweight verification framework that allows for greater scalability than traditional analysis methods. The NetSketch tool was developed to provide the power of this formalism in an easy to use and intuitive user interface.

The effectiveness of vaccinating males against the human papillomavirus (HPV) remains a controversial subject. Many existing studies conclude that increasing female coverage is more effective than diverting resources into male vaccination. Recently, several empirical studies on HPV immunization have been published, providing evidence of the fact that marginal vaccination costs increase with coverage. In this study, we use a stochastic agent-based modeling framework to revisit the male vaccination debate in light of these new findings. Within this framework, we assess the impact of coverage-dependent marginal costs of vaccine distribution on optimal immunization strategies against HPV. Focusing on the two scenarios of ongoing and new vaccination programs, we analyze different resource allocation policies and their effects on overall disease burden. Our results suggest that if the costs associated with vaccinating males are relatively close to those associated with vaccinating females, then coverage-dependent, increasing marginal costs may favor vaccination strategies that entail immunization of both genders. In particular, this study emphasizes the necessity for further empirical research on the nature of coverage-dependent vaccination costs.

This study presents a fully coupled temperature–displacement finite element modelling of the injection stretch-blow moulding (ISBM) process of polyethylene terephthalate (PET) bottles using ABAQUS with a view to optimising the process conditions. A physically-based material model (Buckley model) was used to predict the mechanical behaviour of PET at temperatures slightly above its glass transition temperature. A model incorporating heat transfer between the stretch rod, the preform and the mould was built using axisymmetric solid elements. Extensive finite element analyses were carried out to predict the deformation, the distribution and history of strain and temperature during ISBM of a 20 g–330 ml bottle, which was made in an in situ test on a Sidel SB06 machine. Comparisons of numerical results with the measurements demonstrate that the model can satisfactorily model the sidewall thickness and material distributions. It is also shown that significant non-linear differentials exist in temperature and strain in both bottle thickness and length directions during the process. This justifies the employment of a volume approach to accurately predict the final mechanical properties of the bottles governed by the orientation and crystallinity which are highly temperature and strain dependent.

The contribution of electron-phonon scattering and grain boundary scattering to the mid-IR (lambda = 3.392 mum) properties of An has been assessed by examining both bulk, single crystal samples-Au(1 1 1) and Au(1 1 0)-and thin film, polycrystalline An samples at 300 K and 100 K by means of surface plasmon polariton excitation. The investigation constitutes a stringent test for the in-vacuo Otto-configuration prism coupler used to perform the measurements, illustrating its strengths and limitations. Analysis of the optical response is guided by a physically based interpretation of the Drude model. Relative to the reference case of single crystal Au at 100 K (epsilon = - 568 + i17.5), raising the temperature to 300 K causes increased electron-phonon scattering that accounts for a reduction of similar to40 nm in the electron mean free path. Comparison of a polycrystalline sample to the reference case determines a mean free path due to grain boundary scattering of similar to 17 nm, corresponding to about half the mean grain size as determined from atomic force microscopy and indicating a high reflectance coefficient for the An grain boundaries. An analysis combining consideration of grain boundary scattering and the inclusion of a small percentage of voids in the polycrystalline film by means of an effective medium model indicates a value for the grain boundary reflection coefficient in the range 0.55-0.71. Current high temperature superconducting (HTS) wires exhibit high current densities enabling their use in electrical rotating machinery. The possibility of designing high power density superconducting motors operating at reasonable temperatures allows for new applications in mobile systems in which size and weight represent key design parameters. Thus, all-electric aircrafts represent a promising application for HTS motors. The design of such a complex system as an aircraft consists of a multi-variable optimization that requires computer models and advanced design procedures. This paper presents a specific sizing model of superconducting propulsion motors to be used in aircraft design. The model also takes into account the cooling system. The requirements for this application are presented in terms of power and dynamics as well as a load profile corresponding to a typical mission. We discuss the design implications of using a superconducting motor on an aircraft as well as the integration of the electrical propulsion in the aircraft, and the scaling laws derived from physics-based modeling of HTS motors.

This paper describes a collaborative practice, between an architect (the author) and a textile designer; its outcomes and the critical theoretical and feminist contexts from which the practice evolved and to which it still responds. The practice advocates the interweaving of more than the yarns, material and cultures on which it is physically based, but also the intertwining of theory and technology as a means to advance architectural practice. This is done in response to Ahrentzen’s charge to feminist scholars and practitioners to ‘embrace not only the abstract conceptual nature of much postmodernist theorizing but also that derived from the serious “hanging out”, looking at, listening to, scrutinising and theorizing lived experiences of the everyday’, in this instance the everyday practice of combining concrete and textiles.
