Open skull fractures have been traditionally managed in 2 stages: urgent craniotomy and elevation of the fracture with removal of contaminated bone, debridement, and delayed cranioplasty. Primary, single-stage repair of these injures has been said to entail risks such as infections. Recent experience, however, disproved these concerns.We used a primary single-stage reconstruction for patients presenting with open depressed skull fractures. All patients received antibiotic prophylaxis. The patients underwent elevation of the compound fracture and craniotomy if necessary. Debridement was performed, followed by skull reconstruction using a 0.6-mm titanium mesh.We present 5 consecutive male patients (age, 32.2 +/- 15.6 years) who underwent primary reconstruction of open depressed skull fractures. Clinical and radiologic follow-up was performed 2 months after surgery. The duration of the surgery was 2 +/- 1.6 hours. The size of the implanted mesh was 13 +/- 13.1 cm. No infection was detected in our series, with a follow-up period of 22 +/- 6.5 months (range, 16-29 months). The cosmetic result was defined in 4 patients as "excellent" and in 1 patient as "good."Primary reconstruction of open skull fractures with titanium mesh is feasible, safe, and cosmetically preferable than the conventional staged approach. The introduction into clinical practice can be warranted.

This study reports on 15 mandibular reconstructions using the Dumbach Titan Mesh-System and particulate cancellous bone and marrow harvested from bilateral posterior ilia. All cases showed segmental defects. Eleven cases involved patients with malignant tumor. Six patients had received irradiation of 40-50 Gy. Reconstructions were performed immediately in 1 patient and secondarily in the remaining 14 patients. In 13 cases, mandibles were successfully reconstructed. Of these 13 patients, 9 reconstructions were completed without complications, whereas the other 4 cases showed complications. In 2 cases, reconstruction failed completely. Wireless Mesh Networks (WMN) have proven to be a key technology for increased network coverage of Internet infrastructures. The development process for new protocols and architectures in the area of WMN is typically split into evaluation by network simulation and testing of a prototype in a test-bed. Testing a prototype in a real test-bed is time-consuming and expensive. Irrepressible external interferences can occur which makes debugging difficult. Moreover, the test-bed usually supports only a limited number of test topologies. Finally, mobility tests are impractical. Therefore, we propose VirtualMesh as a new testing architecture which can be used before going to a real test-bed. It provides instruments to test the real communication software including the network stack inside a controlled environment. VirtualMesh is implemented by capturing real traffic through a virtual interface at the mesh nodes. The traffic is then redirected to the network simulator OMNeT++. In our experiments, VirtualMesh has proven to be scalable and introduces moderate delays. Therefore, it is suitable for predeployment testing of communication software for WMNs.

During decades Distance Transforms have proven to be useful for many image processing applications, and more recently, they have started to be used in computer graphics environments. The goal of this paper is to propose a new technique based on Distance Transforms for detecting mesh elements which are close to the objects' external contour (from a given point of view), and using this information for weighting the approximation error which will be tolerated during the mesh simplification process. The obtained results are evaluated in two ways: visually and using an objective metric that measures the geometrical difference between two polygonal meshes.

This paper proposes a new compression algorithm for dynamic 3d meshes. In such a sequence of meshes, neighboring vertices have a strong tendency to behave similarly and the degree of dependencies between their locations in two successive frames is very large which can be efficiently exploited using a combination of Predictive and DCT coders (PDCT). Our strategy gathers mesh vertices of similar motions into clusters, establish a local coordinate frame (LCF) for each cluster and encodes frame by frame and each cluster separately. The vertices of each cluster have small variation over a time relative to the LCF. Therefore, the location of each new vertex is well predicted from its location in the previous frame relative to the LCF of its cluster. The difference between the original and the predicted local coordinates are then transformed into frequency domain using DCT. The resulting DCT coefficients are quantized and compressed with entropy coding. The original sequence of meshes can be reconstructed from only a few non-zero DCT coefficients without significant loss in visual quality. Experimental results show that our strategy outperforms or comes close to other coders.

Neural Networks as Cybernetic Systems is a textbox that combines classical systems theory with artificial neural network technology. This third edition essentially compares with the 2nd one, but has been improved by correction of errors and by a rearrangement and minor expansion of the sections referring to recurrent networks. These changes hopefully allow for an easier comprehension of the essential aspects of this important domain that has received growing attention during the last years.
