Promoting Success in the Introduction of Health Information Systems

The significant number of publications describing unsuccessful cases in the introduction of health information systems makes it advisable to analyze the factors that may be contributing to such failures. However, the very notion of success is not equally assumed in all publications. Based in a literature review, the authors argue that the introduction of systems must be based in an eclectic combination of knowledge fields, adopting methodologies that strengthen the role of organizational culture and human resources in this project, as a whole. On the other hand, the authors argue that the introduction of systems should be oriented by a previously defined matrix of factors, against which the success can be measured.

Esta é a primeira primeira versão em inglês da obra de J.H. da Cunha Rivara A Conjuração de 1787 em Goa e várias cousas desse tempo: Memória Histórica (Panjim, 1875) em que compilou a documentação sobre a chamada Conjuração dos Pintos. A Introdução analisa os motivos que teriam levado Cunha Rivara para se dedicar a este assunto. Como secretário de Estado, Cunha Rivara estava preocupado com a Revolta dos Cipaios que abalara a Índia vizinha, e foi obrigado a prestar ajuda à administração da Companhia das Indias Orientais nesta crise nas fronteiras do Estado da Índia. Havia também militares católicos de Goa (Pintos de Candolim) que estavam envolvidos na Revolta como funcionários ao sedrviço dos Maratas. O motivo mais imediato para investigar a Conjuração de 1787 eram as provocações dos goeses que referiam a aquele evento nos discursos eleitorais como "aborto da justiça". Estes discursos irritavam Cunha Rivara que estava mais inclinado a apoiar os candidatos dos descendentes portugueses para deputados na camara dos pares em Lisboa. Esta investigação e publicação de Cunha Rivara não favorece a imagem de Cunha Rivara como um historiador insuspeito de predilecções. Também as suas publicações sobre os problemas enfrentados pelo Padroado português na Índia são igualmente marcadas por emocionalismo.

n-Hexane hydroisomerisation over bifunctional Pt/MCM-22 catalysts. Influence of the mode of Pt introduction

Three different methods were used to introduce 1.0 wt.% of Pt in bifunctional Pt/MCM-22 zeolite catalysts: ion exchange with Pt(NH3)(4)(2+), incipient wetness impregnation with PtCl6H2 and mechanical mixture with Pt/Al2O3. The Pt dispersion was estimated by transmission electron microscopy and the hydrogenating activity with toluene hydrogenation at 110 degrees C. From these experiments, it can be concluded that with the ion exchanged sample, platinum was located within the inner micropores and on the outer surface, whereas with the impregnated one, platinum was essentially on the outer surface under the form of large particles. With all the samples there is a fast initial decrease in the activity for n-hexane hydroisomerisation at 250 degrees C. With exchanged and impregnated samples, this decrease is followed by a plateau, the activity value being then higher with impregnated sample. For the sample prepared by mechanical mixture a continuous decrease in activity can be observed. All these differences can be related with the distinct locations of Pt.

Study of Pt/MCM-22 based catalysts in the transformation of n-hexane: effect of rare earth elements and mode of platinum introduction

The bifunctional transformation of n-hexane was carried out over Pt/MCM-22 based catalysts. MCM-22 was synthesized and submitted to ion exchange with rare earth nitrate solutions of La, Nd and Yb, followed by Pt introduction. Three different methods were used to introduce about 1 wt% of Pt in the zeolite: ion exchange, incipient wetness impregnation and mechanical mixture with Pt/Al(2)O(3). The bifunctional catalysts were characterized by transmission electron microscopy and by the model reaction of toluene hydrogenation. These experiments showed that, in the ion exchanged sample, Pt is located both within the inner micropores and on the outer surface, whereas in the impregnated one, the metal is essentially located on the outer surface under the form of large particles. The presence of RE elements increases the hydrogenating activity of Pt/MCM-22 since the location of these species at the vicinity of metal particles causes modification on its electronic properties. Whatever the mode of Pt introduction, a fast initial decrease in conversion is observed for n-hexane transformation, followed by a plateau related to the occurrence of the catalytic transformations at the hemicages located at the outer surface of the crystals. The effect of rare earth elements on the hydrogenating function leads to a lower selectivity in dibranched isomers and increased amounts of light products.

Introduction to the special issue on real world applications of intelligent tutoring systems

The idea behind creating this special issue on real world applications of intelligent tutoring systems was to bring together in a single publication some of the most important examples of success in the use of ITS technology. This will serve as a reference to all researchers working in the area. It will also be an important resource for the industry, showing the maturity of ITS technology and creating an atmosphere for funding new ITS projects. Simultaneously, it will be valuable to academic groups, motivating students for new ideas of ITS and promoting new academic research work in the area.

An introduction to the fractional continuous-time linear systems

A brief introduction to the fractional continuous-time linear systems is presented. It will be done without needing a deep study of the fractional derivatives. We will show that the computation of the impulse and step responses is very similar to the classic. The main difference lies in the substitution of the exponential by the Mittag-Leffler function. We will present also the main formulae defining the fractional derivatives.
