In this study, we measure the utilization costs of free trade agreement (FTA) tariff schemes. To do that, we use shipment-level customs data on Thai imports, which identify not only firms, source country, and commodity but also tariff schemes. We propose several measures as a proxy for FTA utilization costs. The example includes the minimum amount of firm-level savings on tariff payments, i.e., trade values under FTA schemes multiplied by the tariff margin, in all transactions. Consequently, the median costs for FTA utilization in 2008, for example, are estimated to be approximately US$2,000 for exports from China, US$300 for exports from Australia, and US$1,000 for exports from Japan. We also found that FTA utilization costs differ by rule of origin and industry.

ABSTRACT Mediterranean scattered oak woodlands have great ecological and socio-economic importance, supporting high environmental and amenity values, and relatively rich biological diversity while producing important ecosystem services. They have been witnesses of different and fast changes developed in the last century. Most of the research developed in this dissertation has conducted within dehesas. This thesis provides: i) the global change evidence of the tree layer and grazing management experienced in the land-use range of a Mediterranean scattered oak woodland (dehesa) over the last 60 years; ii) the important role of scattered trees and adequate management grazing in the improvement of grassland yield, quality and diversity - which it is important, in turn, for the system profitability - under different climate scenarios and site quality; and iii) the lack of oak regeneration evidence under some given representative management regimes and how is the growth development of these plants to assure the viability and persistence of Mediterranean scattered oak woodlands. Tree layer experienced a significant reduction in dehesas during 1950-1980 period where the highest human impacts took place. Sheep herd decreased drastically during the 1970s and, in contrast, cattle have been increasing gradually since then. On the other hand, same livestock grazing management (especially cattle) during long time (minimum 30 years) within Mediterranean scattered oak woodlands reduced strongly the density of young oak plants and showed high probability of herbivory occurrence and intensity. Young plant growth pattern was greatly modified by livestock. Cattle grazing generated stunted plants and sheep grazing generated slender plants favoring the height growth. Microsites created by large trees modified the herbaceous yield according the water availability of the year and generated high plant diversity within herbaceous communities. Especially, ecotone microsite supported high values of herbaceous diversity. The presence of livestock species increased the herbaceous yield and maintained a more diverse community under continuous grazing at both moderate and high intensities; especially cattle. Thus, around the influence of scattered trees there is a high amount of different interactions among livestock, trees and grasslands maintaining and enhancing the quality of whole dehesa system. The results of this thesis highlight how important is balancing management and preservation of Mediterranean scattered oak woodlands to obtain the optimum ecosystem services while the system conservation is assured for a long-term. It is crucial to design management plans with conservation goals that include appropriate silvopastoral practices in Mediterranean scattered oak woodlands.

The x-ray structure of a complex of sialic acid (Neu5Ac) with neuraminidase N9 subtype from A/tern/Australia/G70C/75 influenza virus at 4°C has revealed the location of a second Neu5Ac binding site on the surface of the enzyme. At 18°C, only the enzyme active site contains bound Neu5Ac. Neu5Ac binds in the second site in the chair conformation in a similar way to which it binds to hemagglutinin. The residues that interact with Neu5Ac at this second site are mostly conserved in avian strains, but not in human and swine strains, indicating that it has some as-yet-unknown biological function in birds.

The role and even the existence of myocyte proliferation in the adult heart remain controversial. Documentation of cell cycle regulators, DNA synthesis, and mitotic images has not modified the view that myocardial growth can only occur from hypertrophy of an irreplaceable population of differentiated myocytes. To improve understanding the biology of the heart and obtain supportive evidence of myocyte replication, three indices of cell proliferation were analyzed in dogs affected by a progressive deterioration of cardiac performance and dilated cardiomyopathy. The magnitude of cycling myocytes was evaluated by the expression of Ki67 in nuclei. Ki67 labeling of left ventricular myocytes increased 5-fold, 12-fold, and 17-fold with the onset of moderate and severe ventricular dysfunction and overt failure, respectively. Telomerase activity in vivo is present only in multiplying cells; this enzyme increased 2.4-fold and 3.1-fold in the decompensated heart, preserving telomeric length in myocytes. The contribution of cycling myocytes to telomerase activity was determined by the colocalization of Ki67 and telomerase in myocyte nuclei. More than 50% of Ki67-positive cells expressed telomerase in the overloaded myocardium, suggesting that these myocytes were the morphological counterpart of the biochemical assay of enzyme activity. Moreover, we report that 20–30% of canine myocytes were telomerase competent, and this value was not changed by cardiac failure. In conclusion, the enhanced expression of Ki67 and telomerase activity, in combination with Ki67-telomerase labeling of myocyte nuclei, support the notion that myocyte proliferation contributes to cardiac hypertrophy of the diseased heart.

Vein grafts are still the most commonly used graft material in cardiovascular surgery and much effort has been spent in recent years on investigating the optimal harvesting technique. One other related topic of similar importance remained more or less an incidental one. The storage solutions of vein grafts following procurement and prior to implantation are, despite their assumed impact, a relatively neglected theme. There is no doubt that the endothelium plays a key role in long-term patency of vein grafts, but the effects of the different storage solutions on the endothelium remain unclear : In a review of the literature, we could find 20 specific papers that addressed the question, of which the currently available preservation solutions are superior, harmless, damaging or ineffective. The focus lies on saline and autologous whole blood. Besides these two storage media, novel or alternative solutions have been investigated with surprising findings. In addition, a few words will be spent on potential alternatives and novel solutions on the market. As there is currently no randomized clinical trial regarding saline versus autologous whole blood available, this review compares all previous studies and methods of analysis to provide a certain level of evidence on this topic. In summary, saline has negative effects on the endothelial layers and therefore may compromise graft patency. Related factors, such as distension pressure, may outbalance the initial benefit of autologous whole blood or storage solutions and intensify the harmful effects of warm saline. In addition, there is no uniform consent on the superiority of autologous whole blood for vein graft storage. This may open the door to alternatives such as the University of Wisconsin solution or one of the specific designed storage solutions like TiProtec™ or Somaluthion™. Whether these preservation solutions are superior or advantageous remains the subject of further studies.

Enhanced Atlantic overturning during the Pliocene was first proposed almost 10 yrs ago. Evidence for this Pliocene super conveyor scenario has been collected using a number of proxies (e.g., benthic d13C, Nd isotopic composition of manganese crusts). The present study contributes to the existing evidences by using carbonate dissolution and current vigour history of early Pliocene sediments from the Ceará Rise (ODP Sites 927 and 929). In order to reveal carbonate dissolution history, a number of commonly used and newly established proxies were applied, i.e., sand and carbonate contents, foraminifer fragmentation index, Bulloides Dissolution Index and carbonate silt grain-size distributions. Terrigenous silt grain-size distributions were used to unravel variations in relative current strength and sediment input to the two sites. Overall good carbonate preservation at the shallow Site 927 (3314 m water depth) shows that this level was bathed in North Atlantic Deep Water throughout the early Pliocene. The contrastingly poor carbonate preservation record of the deeper Site 929 (4358 m water depth, at present exposed to Antarctic Bottom Water) is frequently interrupted by phases of good carbonate preservation. These results indicate that the depth of the calcite lysocline was mainly tied to present level (ab. 4200 m water depth), and sometimes even dropped to water depths greater than 4360 m due to even more enhanced circulation. Surprisingly the expansion of NADW is not clearly reflected by an increase in current speed as shown by continuously fine terrigenous grain size.

Records of mean sortable silt and planktonic foraminiferal preservation from the Ceará Rise (western equatorial Atlantic) and from the Caribbean are presented to analyze the Pliocene (3.5-2.2 Ma) to Pleistocene (1.6-0.3 Ma) evolution of near-bottom current strength and the carbonate corrosiveness of deep water. During the mid-Pleistocene climate transition (~1 Ma) a drastic decrease in glacial bottom current strength and an increase in carbonate corrosiveness is registered, demonstrating a substantial decrease in the glacial contribution of the Lower North Atlantic Deep Water (LNADW) to the Atlantic Ocean. Also, an increased sensitivity to eccentricity orbital forcing is registered after the MPT. By contrast, carbonate preservation increases considerably in the deep Caribbean in response to a strong and persistent stable contribution of Upper North Atlantic Deep Water (UNADW). We found evidence for the strongest and most stable circulation within the LNADW cell during the Northern Hemisphere cooling period between ~3.2 and 2.75 Ma. This is in agreement with the 'superconveyor model' which postulates that the highest NADW production took place prior to ~2.7 Ma. A considerable decrease in bottom current strength and planktonic foraminiferal preservation is observed synchronous with the first occurrence of large-scale continental ice sheets in the Northern Hemisphere. This documents the final termination of the 'superconveyor' at ca. 2.75 Ma. However, our data do not support a 'superconveyor' in the interval between 3.5 and 3.2 Ma when high-amplitude fluctuations in bottom current flow and preservation in planktonic foraminifera are observed. Because of the great sensitivity of NADW production to changes in surface water salinity, we assume that the high-amplitude fluctuations of LNADW circulation prior to ~3.2 Ma are linked to changes in the Atlantic salinity budget. After 2.75 Ma they are primarily controlled by ice-sheet forcing. In contrast to the stepwise deterioration of planktonic foraminiferal preservation in the western deep Atlantic, a trend toward better preservation from the Pliocene to Pleistocene is observed in the deep Caribbean. This indicates a long-term increase in the contribution of UNADW to the Atlantic Ocean.
