During Leg 198 of the Ocean Drilling Program (ODP), Paleogene sediments were recovered form 10 holes at four sites along a bathymetric transect from the Southern High of Shatsky Rise. In terms of age, the Paleogene successions span from the Cretaceous/Paleocene boundary to the early Oligocene. Sediments are mainly composed of tan nannofossil ooze with scattered darker layers richer in clay. This data report concerns planktonic foraminiferal biostratigraphy from three holes, specifically Hole 1209A (water depth = 2387 m), Hole 1210A (water depth = 2573 m), and Hole 1211A (water depth = 2907 m). The thickness of Paleogene sediments is 105.90 m in Hole 1209A, 95.05 m in Hole 1210A, and 56.11 m in the deepest Hole 1211A. Preliminary investigations conducted on board revealed that at Site 1209 the succession was mostly complete, whereas the succession was more condensed at Site 1211.

The loss of seed dormancy can occur by exposing the seed at low moisture storage conditions (afterripening; AR). Since a positive GA:ABA ratio play a key role in the reactivation of germination of non-dormant seeds, it seems obvious that a remarkable effect of AR is the decreasing of both ABA levels and sensitivity, as well as the increment of GA synthesis and sensitivity. ABA levels are regulated by control both of its biosynthesis thorough the 9-cis-epoxycarotenoid dioxygenase (NCED) encoding genes and its catabolism mediated mainly by ABA-8¿-hydroxylases (CYP707A). On the other hand, the last steps of the GA biosynthesis pathway should be involved to control its levels. Namely, GA20ox and GA3ox catalyzing the biosynthesis of active GA and GA2ox which catalyzes the GA inactivation. The presence of nitrate accelerates the sensu stricto germination of non-AR S. officinale seeds. Here, we demonstrate that in AR seeds nitrate also alters the expression pattern of key genes involved in ABA and GA metabolism and signalling (i.e. SoNCED6, SoNCED9, SoCYP707A2, SoABI5, SoGA3ox2, SoGA20ox6, SoGA2ox6 and SoRGL2). These results suggest that the nitrate signalling is also operative during imbibition of AR S. officinale seeds.

Immunolocalization of mannans in the seeds of Brachypodium distachyon reveals the presence of these polysaccharides in the root embryo and in the coleorhiza in the early stages of germination (12h), decreasing thereafter to the point of being hardly detected at 27h. Concurrently, the activity of endo-β-mannanases (MANs; EC 3.2.1.78) that catalyse the hydrolysis of β-1,4 bonds in mannan polymers, increases as germination progresses. The MAN gene family is represented by six members in the Brachypodium genome, and their expression has been explored in different organs and especially in germinating seeds. Transcripts of BdMAN2, BdMAN4 and BdMAN6 accumulate in embryos, with a maximum at 24–30h, and are detected in the coleorhiza and in the root by in situ hybridization analyses, before root protrusion (germination sensu stricto). BdMAN4 is not only present in the embryo root and coleorhiza, but is abundant in the de-embryonated (endosperm) imbibed seeds, while BdMAN2 and BdMAN6 are faintly expressed in endosperm during post-germination (36–42h). BdMAN4 and BdMAN6 transcripts are detected in the aleurone layer. These data indicate that BdMAN2, BdMAN4 and BdMAN6 are important for germination sensu stricto and that BdMAN4 and BdMAN6 may also influence reserve mobilization. Whether the coleorhiza in monocots and the micropylar endosperm in eudicots have similar functions, is discussed.

Hydrothermal deposits "sensu stricto" have been recovered during the FAMOUS cruise and Leg 54 of the Deep Sea Drilling Project near the Galapagos Spreading Centre. The studied sediments, mainly composed of clay material, have very poor REE concentrations, below about ten ppm. The shale-normalized patterns are characterized by a significant enrichment in heavy rare earths and show a negative Ce anomaly. The magnitude of this anomaly fluctuates but is generally lower than the seawater Ce anomaly. The geochemical characteristics of these hydrothermal deposits are in contrast with those of metalliferous sediments which are more enriched in trace elements, especially in REE.

Temporal and spatial patterns in eastern North Atlantic sea-surface temperatures (SST) were reconstructed for marine isotope stage (MIS) 11c using a submeridional transect of five sediment cores. The SST reconstructions are based on planktic foraminiferal abundances and alkenone indices, and are supported by benthic and planktic stable isotope measurements, as well as by ice-rafted debris content in polar and middle latitudes. Additionally, the larger-scale dynamics of the precipitation regime over northern Africa and the western Mediterranean region was evaluated from iron concentrations in marine sediments off NW Africa and planktic d13C in combination with analysis of planktic foraminiferal abundances down to the species level in the Mediterranean Sea. Compared to the modern situation, it is revealed that during entire MIS 11c sensu stricto (ss), i.e., between 420 and 398 ka according to our age models, a cold SST anomaly in the Nordic seas co-existed with a warm SST anomaly in the middle latitudes and the subtropics, resulting in steeper meridional SST gradients than during the Holocene. Such a SST pattern correlates well with a prevalence of a negative mode of the modern North Atlantic Oscillation. We suggest that our scenario might partly explain the longer duration of wet conditions in the northern Africa during MIS 11c compared to the Holocene.

To reconstruct the still poorly understood thermocline fluctuations in the western tropical Indian Ocean, a sediment core located off Tanzania (GeoB12610-2; 04°49.00'S, 39°25.42'E, 399?m water depth) covering the last 35 ka was analysed. Mg/Ca-derived temperatures from the planktonic foraminifera Globigerinoides ruber (white) and Neogloboquadrina dutertrei indicate that the last glacial was ~2.5 °C colder in the surface waters and ~3.5 °C colder in the thermocline compared with the present day. The depth of the thermocline and thus the stratification of the water column were shallower during glacial periods and deepened during the deglaciation and Holocene. The increased inflow of Southern Ocean Intermediate Waters via 'ocean tunnels' appears to cool the thermocline from below, leading to a similarity between the thermocline record of GeoB12610-2 with the Antarctic EDML temperature curve during the glacial. With rising sea level and the corresponding greater inflow of Red Sea Waters and Indonesian Intermediate Waters, the proportion of Southern Ocean Intermediate Water within the South Equatorial Current is reduced and, by Holocene time, the correlation to Antarctica is barely traceable. Comparison with the eastern Indian Ocean reveals that the thermocline depth reverses from the last glacial to present.

Predatory mites (Acari: Mesostigmata) on tree trunks without significant epiphytic growth in a subtropical rainforest in Eastern Australia were assessed for habitat specificity (i.e. whether they are tree trunk specialists or occupying other habitats) and the influence of host tree and bark structure on their abundance, species richness and species composition. The trunks of nine tree species from eight plant families representing smooth, intermediate and rough bark textures were sampled using a knockdown insecticide spray. In total, 12 species or morphospecies of Mesostigmata (excluding Uropodina sensu stricto) were collected, most of which are undescribed. Comparison with collections from other habitats indicates that epicorticolous Mesostigmata are mainly represented by suspended soil dwellers (six species), secondarily by generalists (four species) and a bark specialist (one species). A typical ground-dwelling species was also found but was represented only by a single individual. In terms of abundance, 50.5% of individuals were suspended soil dwellers, 40.7% bark specialists, and 8.3% generalists. Host species and bark roughness had no significant effect on abundance or species richness. Furthermore, there was no clear effect on species composition. The distribution of the most frequently encountered species suggests that most mesostigmatid mites living on bark use many or most rainforest tree species, independent of bark roughness. These findings support the hypothesis that some epicorticolous Mesostigmata use tree trunks as 'highways' for dispersing between habitat patches, while others use it as a permanent habitat.

An historical review of the literature relating to placoderm scales preserved in association with articulated dermal plates, or as isolated units in microvertebrate assemblages, is followed by a discussion of their relevance in phylogenetic analyses of the Placodermi. The dentinous tissue forming the tubercles of Early Devonian acanthothoracid scales and dermal bone is similar to that of the dermal bone ornament of some osteostracans, and denticles of the vertebrate Skiichthys from the Ordovician Harding Sandstone. This similarity supports the proposition that the gnathostomes are the sister-group of the Osteostraci, with the Placodermi branching earliest within the gnathostomes, and the Acanthothoraci branching earliest within the Placodermi. The meso-semidentine in acanthothoracid tubercles, rather than semidentine (sensu stricto), is most likely to be synapomorphic for the Placodermi.

Core-top samples from the eastern tropical Pacific (10°N to 20°S) were used to test whether the ratio between Globorotalia menardii cultrata and Neogloboquadrina dutertrei abundance (Rc/d) and the oxygen isotope composition (?18O) of planktonic foraminifera can be used as proxies for the latitudinal position of the Equatorial Front. Specifically, this study compares the ?18O values of eight species of planktonic foraminifera (Globigerinoides ruber sensu stricto (ss) and sensu lato (sl), Globigerinoides sacculifer, Globigerinoides triloba, Pulleniatina obliquiloculata, Neogloboquadrina dutertrei, Globorotalia menardii menardii, Globorotalia menardii cultrata and Globorotalia tumida) with the seasonal hydrography of the region, and evaluates the application of each species or combination of species for paleoceanographic reconstructions. The results are consistent with sea surface temperature and water column stratification patterns. We found that in samples north of 1°N, the Rc/d values tend to be higher and d18O values of G. ruber, G. sacculifer, G. triloba, P. obliquiloculata, N. dutertrei, and G. menardii cultrata tend to be lower than those from samples located south of 1°N. We suggest that the combined use of Rc/d and the d18O difference between G. ruber and G. tumida or between P. obliquiloculata and G. tumida are the most suitable tools for reconstructing changes in the latitudinal position of the Equatorial Front and changes in the thermal stratification of the upper water column in the eastern tropical Pacific.
