The luminescence of Ce3+ and Ce3+, Mn2+ co-doped BaB8O13 and SrB4O7 prepared in air is studied. The results show that tetravalent cerium ion can he reduced to trivalent state in the hosts and gives rise to efficient luminescence. Energy transfer between Ce3+ and Mn2+ is possible. Mn2+ ions can be efficiently sensitized by Ce3+ and exhibit green and red emissions which implied that Mn2+ occupied the crystallographic sites of cations and boron sites of the anoins, respectively. The intensity ratio of red to Been emission in matrix increases with the increasing of manganese concentration.

A method was developed for the determination of total mercury in biological samples. The effects of aqueous ammonia, ethylenediamine and triethanolamine on Hg signal intensity by inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry has been evaluated and the possible mechanisms discussed. It has been proved that the signal intensity of Hg significantly increases with adding, in the presence of small amounts of aqueous ammonia, ethylenediamine or triethanolamine. The normalized intensity (the signal intensity ratio with amine and without amine) of Hg increases as the concentration of aqueous ammonia, ethylenediamine or triethanolamine increases, but the degree of enhancement of aqueous ammonia was smaller than that of ethylenediamine and triethanolamine. The normalized intensity of Hg with aqueous ammonia, ethylenediamine and triethanolamine decreases as the nebulizer flow rate increases, but decreasing degree of aqueous ammonia was smaller than that of ethylenediamine and triethanolamine. The higher the RF powers the higher the normalized intensity of Hg at the same nebulizer flow rate. The addition of aqueous ammonia, ethylenediamine and triethanolamine into analytical solutions significantly improved the transport efficiency of Hg. The detection limit of Hg is improved about ten times by the addition of ethylenediamine or triethanolamine under the optimum experimental parameters. The method has been used to determine mercury in biological standard reference materials (SRM). The analytical results are very close to the certified values and the determined values for similar samples.

The UV-visible absorption and fluorescence spectra of a soluble polyimide, YS-30, in several organic solvents were measured over a wide range of concentration. The experimental results show that there exist both intramolecular and intermolecular electron donor acceptor interactions for YS-30 molecules. The fluorescence behavior of YS-30 in N,N-dimethylacetamide and in chloroform solutions is similar in general, except that its ground-state intermolecular charge transfer emission is more obvious in N,N-dimethylacetamide solution. This difference is attributed to the greater extent of disruption of the chain packing by solvent or/and the more efficient radiationless energy dissipation process from the excited state complexes to chloroform. The intensity ratio of intermolecular charge transfer emission to intramolecular charge transfer emission is used to characterize the state of aggregation of YS-30 molecules in solutions. The plot of this ratio versus concentration indicates the existence of two critical concentrations. It is also found from the same plot that the decrease of coil size is very pronounced during the initial stage of shrinkage.

Six new compounds, alpha,beta-KaHb[GeW(9)M(3)(H2O)(3)O-37]. xH(2)O(M = Al, Ga, In; a + b = 7) and alpha-K9H5[Ge2W18Ga6(H2O)(3)O-74]. 20H(2)O, were synthesized from the lacunary precursors a and beta-GeW9O3410- and characterized by elemental analysis, spectroscopy and electrochemistry. Tungsten-183 NMR spectra of the title complexes consist of two lines with intensity ratio 2:1 as expected for trisubstituted heteropoly anions. The intensity ratio of alpha-Ga compound is 1:2, which is different from others(a:1). With the help of FAB mass spectrum, we concluded that it is a dimer with D-3h structure in aqueous, and the others exist by monomers with C-3v structures.

In this paper, the luminescence properties of Eu3+ and Dy3+ in the oxyapatites M(2)RE(8)(SiO4)(6)O-2 (M=Mg, Ca; RE=Y, Gd, La) were studied. The spectral characters of Eu3+ were discussed in relation to the crystal structure. The dependence of the red-to-orange intensity ratio and the position of the charge transfer band of Eu3+ and the yellow-to-blue intensity ratio of Dy3+ together with their fluorescence intensities (I-R for Eu3+ and I-Y for Dy3+) On the M(2+) and the substitution of BO45- and PO43- for SiO44- was discussed. Finally, the concentration quenching of Dy3+ luminescence was reported.

Ca4Y6(SiO4)(6)O:A (A = Pb2+, Eu3+, Tb3+, Dy3+) phosphors have been prepared by two methods: the sol-gel method and the conventional dry method. The crystallization processes and the luminescence characteristics of the phosphors were studied, The sol-gel method features low-temperature formation of the phosphor, leading to successful preparation of Pb2+-activated phosphors which could not be prepared by the dry method at high temperature. The (4f)(8-)(4f)(7)(5d)(1) absorption band of Tb3+ and the charge-transfer (CT) band of Eu3+ have higher energies and narrower half-widths in the sol-gel-derived phosphors than in the phosphors prepared by the dry method, respectively. The Tb3+ and Dy3+ ions show stronger emission in the former than in the latter. Both the yellow-to-blue intensity ratio (Y:B) of Dy3+ and the red-to-orange intensity ratio (R:O) of Eu3+ in the sol-gel-derived phosphors are smaller than those for the phosphors derived by the dry method.

Miscibility in blends of three styrene-butadiene-styrene and one styrene-isoprene-styrene triblock copolymers containing 28%, 30%, 48%, and 14% by weight of polystyrene, respectively, with poly(vinyl methyl ether) (PVME) were investigated by FTIR spectroscopy and differential scanning calorimetry (DSC). It was found from the optical clarity and the glass transition temperature behavior that the blends show miscibility for each kind of triblock copolymers below a certain concentration of PVME. The concentration range to show miscibility becomes wider as the polystyrene content and molecular weight of PS segment in the triblock copolymers increase. From the FTIR results, the relative peak intensity of the 1100 cm-1 region due to COCH3 band of PVME and peak position of 698 cm-1 region due to phenyl ring are sensitive to the miscibility of SBS(SIS)/PVME blends. The results show that the miscibility in SBS(SIS)/PVME blends is greatly affected by the composition of the copolymers and the polystyrene content in the triblock copolymers. Molecular weights of polystyrene segments have also affected the miscibility of the blends. (C) 1995 John Wiley & Sons, Inc.

The excimer fluorescence of a triblock copolymer, styrene-butadiene-styrene (SBS) containing 48 wt% polystyrene was used to investigate its miscibility with poly(vinyl methyl ether) (PVME). The excimer-to-monomer emission intensity ratio I(M)/I(E) can be used as a sensitive probe to determine the miscibility level in SBS/PVME blends: I(M)/I(E) is a function of PVME concentration, and reaches a maximum when the blend contains 60% PVME. The cloud point curve determined by light scattering shows a pseudo upper critical solution temperature diagram, which can be attributed to the effect of PB segments in SBS. The thermally induced phase separation of SBS/PVME blends can be observed by measuring I(M)/I(E), and the phase dissolution process was followed by measuring I(M)/I(E) at different times.

In this paper, the yellow-to-blue intensity ratio of Dy3+ (Y/B) and the red-to-orange intensity ratio of Eu3+ (R/O) were studied in relation to the compositions and structures of alkaline-earth borates. The dependence of the energy of the Eu3+ charge-transfer band (CTB) and of the emission intensity of Dy3+ on the alkaline-earth ions and the boron content of the hosts is discussed.

Fluorescence excitation-emission spectroscopy (EEMS) was employed to analyze the 3-dimensional fluorescence of dissolved organic matter in the East China Sea after diatom red tide dispersion. The relationships between fluorescence peak intensity, and salinity and chlorophyll-a were discussed. The centers of protein-like fluorescence peaks dispersed at Ex(max)/Em(max) = 270-280/290-315 nm (Peak B), 220-230/290-305 nm (Peak D), 230-240/335-350 nm(Peak S)and 280/320 nm(Peak T). Two humic-like peaks appeared at 255-270/435-480 nm (Peak A) and 330-350/420-480 nm(Peak C). High tyrosine-like intensity was observed in diatom red tide dispersion area, and tryptophan-like fluorescence was also found which was lower. High FIB/FIS showed that diatom red tide produced much tyrosine-like matter during dispersion. Peaks S, A and C had positive correlation with one another, and their distributions were similar, which decreased with distance increasing away from the shore. Good negative correlations between peaks S, A and C and salinity suggested that Jiangsu-Zhejiang coastal water was the same source of then-L Correlations between fluorescence peak intensity and chlorophyll-a were not remarkable enough to clear the relationship between fluorescence and living algal matter. It was supposed that the living algal matter contributed little to the fluorescence intensity of algal dispersion seawater.

Capillary zone electrophoresis was used to monitor the interaction between bilirubin and human serum albumin. Cord blood serum samples were injected directly into an uncoated fused-silica capillary (30 cm x 50 mu m i.d.) and separation was accomplished within 4 min without extensive sample pretreatment. The most suitable running buffer to separate free bilirubin from albumin bound bilirubin was found to contain 1.0 mmol/L EDTA, 5% acetonitrile and 15 mmol/L phosphate with pH adjusted to 8.4. Approximately two bilirubin dianions could be bound per human serum albumin molecule in the cord blood serum. The binding constant was estimated to be 1.1 x 10(5) (L/mol) at 25 degrees C and pH 8.4. The peak area ratio of free bilirubin to total bilirubin can be used to determine the bilirubin binding capacity of cord blood serum for the concentration range of total bilirubin from 204 to 340 mu mol/L using 1:5 diluted cord blood seras. The titanium species in four kinds of titanium-containing MFI zeolites have been studied by ultraviolet (UV)-Raman and ultraviolet visible (UV-Vis) absorption spectroscopies and by the epoxidation of propylene with diluted H2O2 solution (30%). UV-Raman spectroscopy is proved to be a suitable means to estimate qualitatively the framework titanium in TS-l zeolites. Based on the comparison of the relative intensity ratio I-1125/I-380 of UV-Raman spectra, the TS-1(conv.) sample synthesized hydrothermally by the conventional procedure shows the highest amount of framework titanium. UV-Vis spectroscopy reveals that besides minor anatase. titanium species are mainly tetrahydrally coordinated into the framework for TS-l(conv.) or the Ti-ZSM-5 sample prepared by gas-solid reaction between deboronated B-ZSM-5 and TiCl4 vapor at elevated temperatures. For the TS-1(org.) and TS-1(inorg.) samples synthesized hydrothermally using tetrapropylammonium bromide (TPABr) as template and tetrabutylorthotitanite (TBOT) and TiCl3 as titanium source, respectively, the presence of mononuclear and isolated TiOx species which are proposed to bond to the zeolite extraframework is observed. In addition to the framework titanium species, these isolated TiOx species are assumed to be also active for propylene epoxidation.

Some results of the Bay of Biscay regional oceanography presented at ISOBAY are summarized including contributions to physical oceanography, chemical and biological oceanography, marine geology, deep water ecology, marine pollution, fisheries research and cetacean studies. A long-term analysis of the spring bloom of phytoplankton in the area during the last 17 years (1997–2014) is presented as an example of Bay of Biscay climate research. The Spring Bloom presents cycles of 4–6 years reflecting probably the availability of nutrients from the previous winter and has increased in peak intensity during the last decades.
