OBJECTIVE To analyze the factors associated with stiffness of the great arteries in prepubertal children.METHODS This study with convenience sample of 231 schoolchildren aged 9-10 years enrolled in public and private schools in Vitória, ES, Southeastern Brazil, in 2010-2011. Anthropometric and hemodynamic data, blood pressure, and pulse wave velocity in the carotid-femoral segment were obtained. Data on current and previous health conditions were obtained by questionnaire and notes on the child’s health card. Multiple linear regression was applied to identify the partial and total contribution of the factors in determining the pulse wave velocity values.RESULTS Among the students, 50.2% were female and 55.4% were 10 years old. Among those classified in the last tertile of pulse wave velocity, 60.0% were overweight, with higher mean blood pressure, waist circumference, and waist-to-height ratio. Birth weight was not associated with pulse wave velocity. After multiple linear regression analysis, body mass index (BMI) and diastolic blood pressure remained in the model.CONCLUSIONS BMI was the most important factor in determining arterial stiffness in children aged 9-10 years.

A população portuguesa é cada vez mais envelhecida, devido ao aumento médio da esperança de vida e à baixa percentagem de natalidade. Os hábitos alimentares e sedentários são considerados um factor de risco da Hipertensão Arterial (HA), sendo que 1 em cada 3 indivíduos sofre de HA. A Retinopatia Hipertensiva (RH) é a manifestação visual da Hipertensão Arterial, com alterações manifestas na vascularização da coróide, da retina e da papila óptica. Objectivos: Descrever as alterações visuais características da RH e respectiva classificação. Identificar a epidemiologia, divulgar factores de risco, sinais e sintoma. Descrever os exames complementares que permitem o diagnóstico da RH e a sua prevenção.

Definição de doença arterial periférica - Doença caracterizada pela diminuição da circulação arterial,cujas manifestações clínicas são provocadas maioritariamente pela aterosclerose, que condiciona o surgimento de estenoses e oclusões nas artérias major dos membros inferiores. Factores de risco - Diabetes, tabagismo, dislipidémia, idade, HTA, sexo, sedentarismo, hiperviscosidade/hipercoagubilidade, fibrinogénio elevado, proteína C reativa (+), hiperhomocisteinémia, IRC.

Em inquérito realizado na zona urbana de Cáceres (Mato Grosso, Brasil) foram estudados 485 homens e 766 mulheres maiores de 10 anos de idade. Neles a prevalência de Hipertensão arterial foi de 12,2%. Os critérios utilizados foram os propostos pela OMS. As mulheres apresentaram prevalência maior que a dos homens, e em ambos os sexos a prevalência aumenta com a idade. Dentre os hipertensos poucos tinham consciência de seu estado e raros estavam em tratamento.

Performance evaluation increasingly assumes a more important role in any organizational environment. In the transport area, the drivers are the company’s image and for this reason it is important to develop and increase their performance and commitment to the company goals. This evaluation can be used to motivate driver to improve their performance and to discover training needs. This work aims to create a performance appraisal evaluation model of the drivers based on the multi-criteria decision aid methodology. The MMASSI (Multicriteria Methodology to Support Selection of Information Systems) methodology was adapted by using a template supporting the evaluation according to the freight transportation company in study. The evaluation process involved all drivers (collaborators being evaluated), their supervisors and the company management. The final output is a ranking of the drivers, based on their performance, for each one of the scenarios used.

Over the last fifty years mobility practices have changed dramatically, improving the way travel takes place, the time it takes but also on matters like road safety and prevention. High mortality caused by high accident levels has reached untenable levels. But the research into road mortality stayed limited to comparative statistical exercises which go no further than defining accident types. In terms of sharing information and mapping accidents, little progress has been mad, aside from the normal publication of figures, either through simplistic tables or web pages. With considerable technological advances on geographical information technologies, research and development stayed rather static with only a few good examples on dynamic mapping. The use of Global Positioning System (GPS) devices as normal equipments on automobile industry resulted in a more dynamic mobility patterns but also with higher degrees of uncertainty on road traffic. This paper describes a road accident georeferencing project for the Lisbon District involving fatalities and serious injuries during 2007. In the initial phase, individual information summaries were compiled giving information on accidents and its majour characteristics, collected by the security forces: the Public Safety Police Force (Polícia de Segurança Pública - PSP) and the National Guard (Guarda Nacional Republicana - GNR). The Google Earth platform was used to georeference the information in order to inform the public and the authorities of the accident locations, the nature of the location, and the causes and consequences of the accidents. This paper also gives future insights about augmented reality technologies, considered crucial to advances to road safety and prevention studies. At the end, this exercise could be considered a success because of numerous consequences, as for stakeholders who decide what to do but also for the public awareness to the problem of road mortality.

A hipertensão arterial e a obstrução brônquica são doenças muito comuns na população, não sendo raro portanto que coexistam no mesmo indivíduo. É fundamental tratar cada uma delas sem agravar a outra. No que respeita ao tratamento anti-hipertensor existem de facto medicamentos que agravam ou causam obstrução brônquica pelo que devem ser usados com precauções acrescidas ou ser contra-indicados. Consideramos neste trabalho que na obstrução brônquica os anti-hipertensores indicados são os antagonistas do cálcio, os antagonistas serotoninérgicos, os diuréticos e os antagonistas alfa-1-adrenérgicos. Os anti-hipertensores contra-indicados são os antagonistas beta-adrenérgicos. Os anti-hipertensores a usar com precauções acrescidas são os inibidores do enzima de conversão da angiotensina e os agonistas alfa-2-adrenérgicos.
