Ovid, Remedia amoris 95: uerba dat omnis amor

Anagrams and syllabic wordplay of the kind championed by Frederick Ahl in his Metaformations have not always been favourably received by scholars of Latin poetry; I would hesitate to propose the following instance, were it not for the fact that its occurrence seems peculiarly apposite to the context in which it appears. That Roman poets were prepared to use such techniques to enhance the presentation of an argument by exemplifying its operation at a verbal level is demonstrated by the famous passage of Lucretius (DRN 1.907–14; also 1.891–2) in which the poet seeks to illustrate the tendency of semina … ardoris to create fire in wood by the literal presence of elements from the word for ‘fires’ (IGNes) in that denoting wood (lIGNum). A similar conception may underlie the association insinuated by the love elegists between amor and mors, suggesting that death is somehow ‘written into’ love: so Propertius declares laus in amore mori (2.1.47), while Tibullus appears to point to the lurking presence of death in the pursuit of love in the lines interea, dum fata sinunt, iungamus amores: | iam ueniet tenebris Mors adoperta caput (1.1.69–70) – so swift and unexpected is death's approach that it is already present in aMOReS in the preceding line. Ovid's awareness of the poetic potential of this kind of play (if that is the right word for it) is fully exhibited in his celebrated account of Echo and Narcissus in Metamorphoses 3, where the subject matter gives the poet ample scope to exploit the humorous and pathetic possibilities afforded by Echo's fragmented repetitions of the frustrated entreaties of her beloved.

L’illustration marginale d’un ouvrage profane : étude du manuscrit Paris, Bibliothèque nationale de France, français 95, xiiie siècle (1290)

BnF fr. 95 is a late 13th century manuscript containing Arthurian romances and other fictional and didactic texts. The Estoire del saint Graal and Merlin section is the most highly illuminated, with a rich marginal iconography, an unusual feature in the illustration of lay works and in these texts’ manuscript tradition. This article shows how in Merlin and its Vulgate Sequel marginal scenes overlap with widespread subjects in courtly and chivalric vernacular romances, in contrast with Latin and religious works. The reuse of similar patterns in principal and marginal miniatures, examined in the episode of the Battle of Danablaise, where King Arthur fights the Saxon King Rion, highlights the need for a comprehensive reading of text and images, taking into account the mise en page and the different levels of illustration in the manuscript.

Arginine vasopressin controls p27(KiP1) protein expression by PKC activation and irreversibly inhibits the proliferation of K-Ras-dependent mouse Y1 adrenocortical malignant cells

The neurohypophyseal hormone arginine vasopressin (AVP) is a classic mitogen in many cells. In K-Ras-dependent mouse Y1 adrenocortical malignant cells, AVP elicits antagonistic responses such as the activation of the PKC and the ERK1/2 mitogenic pathways to down-regulate cyclin D1 gene expression, which induces senescence-associated beta-galactosidase (SA-beta Gal) and leads to cell cycle arrest. Here, we report that in the metabolic background of Y1 cells, PKC activation either by AVP or by PMA inhibits the PI3K/Akt pathway and stabilises the p27(Kip1) protein even in the presence of the mitogen fibroblast growth factor 2 (FGF2). These results suggest that p27(Kip1) is a critical signalling node in the mechanisms underlying the survival of the Y1 cells. In Y1 cells that transiently express wild-type p27(Kip1), AVP caused a severe reduction in cell survival, as shown by clonogenic assays. However, AVP promoted the survival of Y1 cells transiently expressing mutant p27-S10A or mutant p27-T187A, which cannot be phosphorylated at Ser10 and Thr187, respectively. In addition, PKC activation by PMA mimics the toxic effect caused by AVP in Y1 cells, and inhibition of PKC completely abolishes the effects caused by both PMA and AVP in clonogenic assays. The vulnerability of Y1 cells during PKC activation is a phenotype conditioned upon K-ras oncogene amplification because K-Ras down-regulation with an inducible form of the dominant-negative mutant H-RasN17 has resulted in Y1 cells that are resistant to AVP`s deleterious effects. These data show that the survival destabilisation of K-Ras-dependent Y1 malignant cells by AVP requires large quantities of the p27(Kip1) protein as well as phosphorylation of the p27(Kip1) protein at both Ser10 and Thr187. Collective bargaining in Brazilian manufacturing, 1978-95

Collective bargaining, it is widely claimed, has been on the increase in Brazil since the late 1970s. This is seen as part of a broader change in Brazilian industrial relations towards a hybrid system of interest representation, in which elements of both the old state corporatism and pluralism now coexist. However, there is little or no systematic empirical evidence available to support this conclusion. This thesis addresses the question of the strengthening of collective bargaining as a method of job regulation in Brazil by providing a detailed empirical study. The questions of this study are: (a) how important has collective bargaining become in establishing provisions on the terms and conditions of the employment relationship which are not simply reproducing rules established via state regulation?; and (b) what factors accounted for changes in the content of these provisions? An analysis of 10,734 provisions in 287 collective agreements in manufacturing industries in the Metropolitan Area of Porto Alegre, the capital of the southernmost state of Rio Grande do Sul, was carried out for the period of 1978-95. This analysis offers support for the thesis that the significance of collective bargaining has increased. It shows that: (a) most substantive provisions created rules that were not established in other forms of regulation; (b) provisions that replicate the contents of regulatory legislation accounted for one out of seven substantive provisions, but in spite of being a copy of the law, these provisions are not entirely neutral for job regulation; (c) collective agreements also laid down substantive provisions benefiting employers, and not simply employees; and (d) the pace of change in bargaining outcomes oscillated with changes in the economic, legal and judicial contexts. This pace of change was mostly affected by (i) the rate of unemployment, (ii) the degree of openness of the economy to foreign competition, (iii) the capacity of employers to pass on costs to costumers, (iv) stabilisation policies aimed at curbing inflation, (v) the Federal Constitution made in 1988, (vi) the official rate of minimum wages, and (vii) the conduct of the labour judicial system in settling collective disputes.
