This paper gives a new iterative algorithm for kernel logistic regression. It is based on the solution of a dual problem using ideas similar to those of the Sequential Minimal Optimization algorithm for Support Vector Machines. Asymptotic convergence of the algorithm is proved. Computational experiments show that the algorithm is robust and fast. The algorithmic ideas can also be used to give a fast dual algorithm for solving the optimization problem arising in the inner loop of Gaussian Process classifiers.

Main chain and segmental dynamics of polyisoprene (PI) and poly(methyl methacrylate)(PMMA) chains in semi IPNs were systematically studied over a wide range of temperatures (above and below T-g of both polymers) as a function of composition, crosslink density, and molecular weight. The immiscible polymers retained most of its characteristic molecular motion; however, the semi IPN synthesis resulted in dramatic changes in the motional behavior of both polymers due to the molecular level interpenetration between two polymer chains. ESR spin probe method was found to be sensitive to the concentration changes of PMMA in semi IPNs. Low temperature spectra showed the characteristics of rigid limit spectra, and in the range of 293-373 K.complex spectra were obtained with the slow component mostly arisingout of the PMMA rich regions and fast component from the PI phase. We found that the rigid PMMA chains closely interpenetrated into thehighly mobile PI network imparts motional restriction in nearby PI chains, and the highly mobile PI chains induce some degree of flexibility in highly rigid PMMA chains. Molecular level interchain mixing was found to be more efficient at a PMMA concentration of 35 wt.%. Moreover, the strong interphase formed in the above mentionedsemi IPN contributed to the large slow component in the ESR spectra at higher temperature. The shape of the spectra along with the data obtained from the simulations of spectra was correlated to the morphology of the semi IPNs. The correlation time measurement detected the motional region associated with the glass transition of PI and PMMA, and these regions were found to follow the same pattern of shifts in a-relaxation of PI and PMMA observed in DMA analysis. Activation energies associated with the T-g regions were also calculated. T-50G was found to correlate with the T-g of PMMA, and the volume of polymer segments undergoing glass transitional motion was calculated to be 1.7 nm(3).C-13 T-1 rho measurements of PMMA carbons indicate that the molecular level interactions were strong in semi IPN irrespective of the immiscible nature of polymers. The motional characteristics of H atoms attached to carbon atoms in both polymers were analyzed using 2D WISE NMR. Main relaxations of both components shifted inward, and both SEM and TEM analysis showed the development of a nanometer sized morphology in the case of highly crosslinked semi IPN. Single-step low-temperature solution combustion (LCS) synthesis was adopted for the preparation of LaMnO3+ (LM) nanopowders. The powders were well characterized by powder X-ray diffraction (PXRD), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), energy dispersive spectroscopy (EDS),surface area and Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR). The PXRD of as-formed LM showed a cubic phase but, upon calcination (900degrees C, 6 h), it transformed into a rhombohedral phase. The effect of fuel on the formation of LM was examined, and its structure and magnetoresistance properties were investigated. Magnetoresistance (MR) measurements on LM were carried out at 0, 1, 4 and 7 T between 300 and 10 K. LM (fuel-to-oxidizer ratio; = 1) showed an MR of 17% at 1 T, whereas, for 4 and 7 T, it exhibited an MR of 45 and 55%, respectively, near the TM-I. Metallic resistivity data below TM-I showed that the double exchange interaction played a major role in this compound. It was interesting to observe that the sample calcined at 1200 degrees C for 3 h exhibited insulator behavior.

Denoising of images in compressed wavelet domain has potential application in transmission technology such as mobile communication. In this paper, we present a new image denoising scheme based on restoration of bit-planes of wavelet coefficients in compressed domain. It exploits the fundamental property of wavelet transform - its ability to analyze the image at different resolution levels and the edge information associated with each band. The proposed scheme relies on the fact that noise commonly manifests itself as a fine-grained structure in image and wavelet transform allows the restoration strategy to adapt itself according to directional features of edges. The proposed approach shows promising results when compared with conventional unrestored scheme, in context of error reduction and has capability to adapt to situations where noise level in the image varies. The applicability of the proposed approach has implications in restoration of images due to noisy channels. This scheme, in addition, to being very flexible, tries to retain all the features, including edges of the image. The proposed scheme is computationally efficient.

Recent studies have shown that changes in global mean precipitation are larger for solar forcing than for CO2 forcing of similar magnitude. In this paper, we use an atmospheric general circulation model to show that the differences originate from differing fast responses of the climate system. We estimate the adjusted radiative forcing and fast response using Hansen's ``fixed-SST forcing'' method.Total climate system response is calculated using mixed layer simulations using the same model. Our analysis shows that the fast response is almost 40% of the total response for few key variables like precipitation and evaporation. We further demonstrate that the hydrologic sensitivity, defined as the change in global mean precipitation per unit warming, is the same for the two forcings when the fast responses are excluded from the definition of hydrologic sensitivity, suggesting that the slow response (feedback) of the hydrological cycle is independent of the forcing mechanism. Based on our results, we recommend that the fast and slow response be compared separately in multi-model intercomparisons to discover and understand robust responses in hydrologic cycle. The significance of this study to geoengineering is discussed.

Energy harvesting sensors (EHS), which harvest energy from the environment in order to sense and then communicate their measurements over a wireless link, provide the tantalizing possibility of perpetual lifetime operation of a sensor network. The wireless communication link design problem needs to be revisited for these sensors as the energy harvested can be random and small and not available when required. In this paper, we develop a simple model that captures the interactions between important parameters that govern the communication link performance of a EHS node, and analyze its outage probability for both slow fading and fast fading wireless channels. Our analysis brings out the critical importance of the energy profile and the energy storage capability on the EHS link performance. Our results show that properly tuning the transmission parameters of the EHS node and having even a small amount of energy storage capability improves the EHS link performance considerably.

Lactose is probably the most used tablet excipient in the field of pharmacy. Although lactose is thoroughly characterized and available in many different forms there is a need to find a replacer for lactose as a filler/binder in tablet formulations because it has some downsides. Melibiose is a relatively unknown disaccharide that has not been thoroughly characterized and not previously used as an excipient in tablets. Structurally melibiose is close to lactose as it is also formed from the same two monosaccharides, glucose and galactose. Aim of this research is to characterize and to study physicochemical properties of melibiose. Also the potential of melibiose to be used as pharmaceutical tablet excipient, even as a substitute for lactose is evaluated. Current knowledge about fundamentals of tableting and methods for determinating of deformation behavior and tabletability are reviewed. In this research Raman spectroscopy, X-ray powder diffraction (XRPD), near-infrared spectroscopy (NIR) and Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR) were used to study differences between two melibiose batches purchased from two suppliers. In NIR and FT-IR measurements no difference between materials could be observed. XPRD and Raman however found differences between the two melibiose batches. Also the effects of moisture content and heating to material properties were studied and moisture content of materials seems to cause some differences. Thermal analytical methods, differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) and thermogravimetry (TG) were used to study thermal behaviour of melibiose and difference between materials was found. Other melibiose batch contains residual water which evaporates at higher temperatures causing the differences in thermal behaviour. Scanning electron microscopy images were used to evaluate particle size, particle shape and morphology. Bulk, tapped and true densities and flow properties of melibiose was measured. Particle size of the melibiose batches are quite different resulting causing differences in the flowability. Instrumented tableting machine and compression simulator were used to evaluate tableting properties of melbiose compared to α-lactose monohydrate. Heckel analysis and strain-rate sensitivity index were used to determine deformation mechanism of melibiose monohydrate in relation to α–lactose monohydrate during compaction. Melibiose seems to have similar deformation behaviour than α-lactose monohydrate. Melibiose is most likely fragmenting material. Melibiose has better compactibility than α – lactose monohydrate as it produces tablets with higher tensile strength with similar compression pressures. More compression studies are however needed to confirm these results because limitations of this study.
Synthesis, characterization, and thermal degradation studies on group VIA derived weak-link polymers

Polymers containing group VIA derived weak links, viz. poly(styrene disulfide) (PSD), poly- (styrene tetrasulfide) (PST), and poly(styrene diselenide) (PSDSE), have been synthesized. The polymers PSD and PST were characterized by NMR, IR, UV, TGA, and fast atom bombardment m w spectrometric (FABMS) techniques. The presence of different configurational sequences in PSD and PST were identified by *3C NMR spectroscopy. PSDSE, being insoluble in common organic solvents, was characterized using solid-state lac NMR (CP-MAS) spectroscopy. Thermal degradation of polymers under direct pyrolysis-mass spectrometric (DP-MS) conditions revealed that all the polymers undergo degradation through the weaklink scission. A comparative study of the pyrolysis products of these polymers with that of poly(styrene peroxide) (PSP) revealed a smooth transformation down the group with no monomer (styrene or oxygen) formation in PSP to only styrene and selenium metal in PSDSE. This trend of group VIA is explained from the energetics of the C-X bond (X = 0, S, and Se) which also seems to be important in addition to the weak X-X bond cleavage. In PSP and PSD, the behavior is also explained from the energetics of the alkoxy and thiyl radicals. The unique exothermic degradation in PSP compared to endothermic degradation in PSD and PSDSE is explained from the nature of the producta of degradation.

The use of a number of perovskite phases M MO3-x, as the only forming additive in ZnO ceramics, produces a high nonlinearity index, ?(up to 45), where M is a multivalent transition?metal ion and M is an alkaline earth or a rare?earth ion. From this study, the formation parameters crucial to high nonlinearity, such as nonstoichiometry in the as?received ZnO powder, low x values of the additives and fast cooling rate after the sintering, are explainable on the basis of a depletion layer formation at the presintering stage. This is because of the surface states arising out of the chemisorbed oxygen. The depletion layer is retained during sintering as a result of the higher valence state of M ions, preferentially present at the grain?boundary regions. The fast cooling freezes in the high?temperature concentration of donor?type defects, thereby decreasing the depletion layer width.

The mechanism of folding of the small protein barstar in the pre-transition zone at pH 7, 25 degrees C has been characterized using rapid mixing techniques. Earlier studies had established the validity of the three-state U-S reversible arrow U-F reversible arrow N mechanism for folding and unfolding in the presence of guanidine hydrochloride (GdnHCl) at concentrations greater than 2.0 M, where U-S and U-F are the slow-refolding and fast-refolding unfolded forms, respectively, and N is the fully folded form. It is now shown that early intermediates, I-S1 and I-S2 as well as a late native-like intermediate, I-N, are present on the folding pathways of U-S, and an early intermediate I-F1 on the folding pathway of U-F, when bars tar is refolded in concentrations of GdnHCl below 2.0 M. The rates of formation and disappearance of I-N, and the rates of formation of N at three different concentrations of GdnHCl in the pre-transition zone have been measured. The data indicate that in 1.5 M GdnHCl, I-N is not fully populated on the U-S --> I-S1 --> I-N --> N pathway because the rate of its formation is so slow that the U-S reversible arrow U-F reversible arrow N pathway can effectively compete with that pathway. In 1.0 M GdnHCl, the U-S --> I-S1 --> I-N transition is so fast that I-N is fully populated. In 0.6 M GdnHCl, I-N appears not to be fully populated because an alternative folding pathway, U-S --> I-S2 --> N, becomes available for the folding of U-S, in addition to the U-S --> I-S1 --> I-N --> N pathway Measurement of the binding of the hydrophobic dye 1-anilino-8-naphthalenesulphonate (ANS) during folding indicates that ANS binds to two distinct intermediates, I-M1 and I-M2, that form within 2 ms on the U-S --> I-M1 --> I-S1 --> I-N --> N and U-S --> I-M2 --> I-S2 --> N pathways. There is no evidence for the accumulation of intermediates that can bind ANS on the folding pathway of U-F.

CuO nanowires are synthesized by heating Cu foil, rod and grid in ambient without employing a catalyst or gas flow at temperatures ranging from 400 to 800 degrees C for a duration of 1-12 h. Scanning electron microscopy (SEM) investigation reveals the formation of nanowires. The structure, morphology and phase of the as-synthesized nanowires are analyzed by various techniques such as X-ray diffraction (XRD), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), thermogravimetric analysis (TGA) and Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR). It is found that these nanowires are composed of CuO phase and the underlying film is of Cu2O. A systematic study is carried out to find the possibilities for the transformation of one phase to another completely. A possible growth mechanism for the nanowires is also discussed. A simple, novel, and fast method of preparation of metal nitride powders (GaN, TiN, and VN) using microwave-assisted carbothermal reduction and nitridation has been demonstrated. The procedure uses the respective oxides and amorphous carbon powder as the starting materials. Ammonia gas is found to be more effective in nitridation than high-purity N-2 gas. Complete nitridation is achieved by the use of a slight excess of amorphous carbon. Metals themselves are not found to be effectively nitrided. The products were characterized using XRD, TEM, and SAED and found to possess good crystallinity and phase purity. The method can be of general applicability for the preparation of metal nitrides.

We review the current status of various aspects of biopolymer translocation through nanopores and the challenges and opportunities it offers. Much of the interest generated by nanopores arises from their potential application to third-generation cheap and fast genome sequencing. Although the ultimate goal of single-nucleotide identification has not yet been reached, great advances have been made both from a fundamental and an applied point of view, particularly in controlling the translocation time, fabricating various kinds of synthetic pores or genetically engineering protein nanopores with tailored properties, and in devising methods (used separately or in combination) aimed at discriminating nucleotides based either on ionic or transverse electron currents, optical readout signatures, or on the capabilities of the cellular machinery. Recently, exciting new applications have emerged, for the detection of specific proteins and toxins (stochastic biosensors), and for the study of protein folding pathways and binding constants of protein-protein and protein-DNA complexes. The combined use of nanopores and advanced micromanipulation techniques involving optical/magnetic tweezers with high spatial resolution offers unique opportunities for improving the basic understanding of the physical behavior of biomolecules in confined geometries, with implications for the control of crucial biological processes such as protein import and protein denaturation. We highlight the key works in these areas along with future prospects. Finally, we review theoretical and simulation studies aimed at improving fundamental understanding of the complex microscopic mechanisms involved in the translocation process. Such understanding is a pre-requisite to fruitful application of nanopore technology in high-throughput devices for molecular biomedical diagnostics.

Wireless networks transmit information from a source to a destination via multiple hops in order to save energy and, thus, increase the lifetime of battery-operated nodes. The energy savings can be especially significant in cooperative transmission schemes, where several nodes cooperate during one hop to forward the information to the next node along a route to the destination. Finding the best multi-hop transmission policy in such a network which determines nodes that are involved in each hop, is a very important problem, but also a very difficult one especially when the physical wireless channel behavior is to be accounted for and exploited. We model the above optimization problem for randomly fading channels as a decentralized control problem – the channel observations available at each node define the information structure, while the control policy is defined by the power and phase of the signal transmitted by each node.In particular, we consider the problem of computing an energy-optimal cooperative transmission scheme in a wireless network for two different channel fading models: (i) slow fading channels, where the channel gains of the links remain the same for a large number of transmissions, and (ii) fast fading channels, where the channel gains of the links change quickly from one transmission to another. For slow fading, we consider a factored class of policies (corresponding to local cooperation between nodes), and show that the computation of an optimal policy in this class is equivalent to a shortest path computation on an induced graph, whose edge costs can be computed in a decentralized manner using only locally available channel state information(CSI). For fast fading, both CSI acquisition and data transmission consume energy. Hence, we need to jointly optimize over both these; we cast this optimization problem as a large stochastic optimization problem. We then jointly optimize over a set of CSI functions of the local channel states, and a corresponding factored class of control policies corresponding to local cooperation between nodes with a local outage constraint. The resulting optimal scheme in this class can again be computed efficiently in a decentralized manner. We demonstrate significant energy savings for both slow and fast fading channels through numerical simulations of randomly distributed networks.
