The mathematical models that describe the immersion-frying period and the post-frying cooling period of an infinite slab or an infinite cylinder were solved and tested. Results were successfully compared with those found in the literature or obtained experimentally, and were discussed in terms of the hypotheses and simplifications made. The models were used as the basis of a sensitivity analysis. Simulations showed that a decrease in slab thickness and core heat capacity resulted in faster crust development. On the other hand, an increase in oil temperature and boiling heat transfer coefficient between the oil and the surface of the food accelerated crust formation. The model for oil absorption during cooling was analysed using the tested post-frying cooling equation to determine the moment in which a positive pressure driving force, allowing oil suction within the pore, originated. It was found that as crust layer thickness, pore radius and ambient temperature decreased so did the time needed to start the absorption. On the other hand, as the effective convective heat transfer coefficient between the air and the surface of the slab increased the required cooling time decreased. In addition, it was found that the time needed to allow oil absorption during cooling was extremely sensitive to pore radius, indicating the importance of an accurate pore size determination in future studies.

Transport of pollution and heatout of streets into the boundary layer above is not currently understood and so fluxes cannot be quantified. Scalar concentration within the street is determined by the flux out of it and so quantifying fluxes for turbulent flow over a rough urban surface is essential. We have developed a naphthalene sublimation technique to measure transfer from a two-dimensional street canyon in a wind tunnel for the case of flow perpendicular to the street. The street was coated with naphthalene, which sublimes at room temperature, so that the vapour represented the scalar source. The transfer velocity wT relates the flux out of the canyon to the concentration within it and is shown to be linearly related to windspeed above the street. The dimensionless transfer coefficient wT/Uδ represents the ventilation efficiency of the canyon (here, wT is a transfer velocity,Uδ is the wind speed at the boundary-layer top). Observed values are between 1.5 and 2.7 ×10-3 and, for the case where H/W→0 (ratio of buildingheight to street width), values are in the same range as estimates of transfer from a flat plate, giving confidence that the technique yields accurate values for street canyon scalar transfer. wT/Uδ varies with aspect ratio (H/W), reaching a maximum in the wake interference regime (0.3 < H/W < 0.65). However, when upstream roughness is increased, the maximum in wT/Uδ reduces, suggesting that street ventilation is less sensitive to H/W when the flow is in equilibrium with the urban surface. The results suggest that using naphthalene sublimation with wind-tunnel models of urban surfaces can provide a direct measure of area-averaged scalar fluxes.

The [Ru(3)O(H(3)CCO(2))(6)(py)(2)(L)]PF(6) clusters, where L=methanol or dimethyl sulfoxide, can be activated by peroxide or oxygen donor species, such as tert-butyl hydroperoxide (TBHP) or iodosylbenzene (PhIO), respectively, generating reactive intermediates of the type [Ru(3)(IV,IV,III)=0](+). In this way, they catalyse the oxidation of cyclohexane or cyclohexene by TBHP and PhIO, via oxygen atom transfer, rather than by the alternative oxygen radical mechanism characteristic of this type of complexes. In addition to their ability to perform efficient olefin epoxydation catalysis, these clusters also promote the cleavage of the C-H bond in hydrocarbons, resembling the oxidation catalysis by metal porphyrins. Annular flow is the prevailing pattern in transport and energy conversion systems and therefore, one of the most important patterns in multiphase flow in ducts. The correct prediction of the pressure gradient and heat transfer coefficient is essential for optimizing the system s capacity. The objective of this work is to develop and implement a numerical algorithm capable of predicting hydrodynamic and thermal characteristics for upflow, vertical, annular flow. The numerical algorithm is then complemented with the physical modeling of phenomena that occurs in this flow pattern. These are, turbulence, entrainment and deposition and phase change. For the development of the numerical model, axial diffusion of heat and momentum is neglected. In this way the time-averaged equations are solved in their parabolic form obtaining the velocity and temperature profiles for each axial step at a time, together with the global parameters, namely, pressure gradient, mean film thickness and heat transfer coefficient, as well as their variation in the axial direction. The model is validated for the following conditions: fully-developed laminar flow with no entrainment; fully developed laminar flow with heat transfer, fully-developed turbulent flow with entrained drops, developing turbulent annular flow with entrained drops, and turbulent flow with heat transfer and phase change

This work depicts a study of the adsorption of carbon dioxide on zeolite 13X. The activities were divided into four stages: study batch adsorption capacity of the adsorbent with synthetic CO2 (4%), fixed bed dynamic evaluation with the commercial mixture of gases (4% CO2, 1.11% CO, 1 2% H2, 0.233% CH4, 0.1% C3, 0.0233% C4 argon as inert closing balance), fixed bed dynamic modeling and evaluation of the breakthrough curve of CO2 originated from the pyrolysis of sewage sludge. The sewage sludge and the adsorbent were characterized by analysis TG / DTA, SEM, XRF and BET. Adsorption studies were carried out under the following operating conditions: temperature 40 °C (for the pyrolysis of the sludge T = 600 °C), pressures of 0.55 to 5.05 bar (batch process), flow rate of the gaseous mixture between 50 - 72 ml/min and the adsorbent masses of 10, 15 and 20 g (fixed bed process). The time for the adsorption batch was 7 h and on the fixed bed was around 180 min. The results of this study showed that in batch adsorption process step with zeolite 13X is efficient and the mass of adsorbed CO2 increases with the increases pressure, decreases with temperature increases and rises due the increase of activation temperature adsorbent. In the batch process were evaluated the breakthrough curves, which were compared with adsorption isotherms represented by the models of Langmuir, Freündlich and Toth. All models well adjusted to the experimental points, but the Langmuir model was chosen in view of its use in the dynamic model does not have implications for adsorption (indeterminacy and larger number of parameters such as occurred with others) in solving the equation. In the fixed bed dynamic study with the synthetic gas mixture, 20 g of mass adsorbent showed the maximum adsorption percentage 46.7% at 40 °C temperature and 50 mL/min of flow rate. The model was satisfactorily fitted to the three breakthrough curves and the parameters were: axial dispersion coefficient (0.0165 dm2/min), effective diffusivity inside the particle (dm2/min 0.0884) and external transfer coefficient mass (0.45 dm/min). The breakthrough curve for CO2 in the process of pyrolysis of the sludge showed a fast saturation with traces of aerosols presents in the gas phase into the fixed bed under the reaction process

In this study were projected, built and tested an electric solar dryer consisting of a solar collector, a drying chamber, an exhaust fan and a fan to promote forced hot air convection. Banana drying experiments were also carried out in a static column dryer to model the drying and to obtain parameters that can be used as a first approximation in the modeling of an electric solar dryer, depending on the similarity of the experimental conditions between the two drying systems. From the banana drying experiments conducted in the static column dryer, we obtained food weight data as a function of aqueous concentration and temperature. Simplified mathematical models of the banana drying were made, based on Fick s and Fourier s second equations, which were tested with the experimental data. We determined and/or modeled parameters such as banana moisture content, density, thin layer drying curves, equilibrium moisture content, molecular diffusivity of the water in banana DAB, external mass transfer coefficient kM, specific heat Cp, thermal conductivity k, latent heat of water evaporation in the food Lfood, time to heat food, and minimum energy and power required to heat the food and evaporate the water. When we considered the shrinkage of radius R of a banana, the calculated values of DAB and kM generally better represent the phenomenon of water diffusion in a solid. The latent heat of water evaporation in the food Lfood calculated by modeling is higher than the latent heat of pure water evaporation Lwater. The values calculated for DAB and KM that best represent the drying were obtained with the analytical model of the present paper. These values had good agreement with those assessed with a numeric model described in the literature, in which convective boundary condition and food shrinkage are considered. Using parameters such as Cp, DAB, k, kM and Lfood, one can elaborate the preliminary dryer project and calculate the economy using only solar energy rather than using solar energy along with electrical energy

The complex reaction between VO2+ ((1)A(1)/(3)A) and C2H4 (Ag-1(g)/(3)A(1)) to yield VO+ ((1)Delta/(3)Sigma) and CH3CHO ('A'/(3)A) has been studied by means of B3LYP/6-31G* and B3LYP/6-311G(2d,p) calculations. The structures of all reactants, products, intermediates, and transition structures of this reaction have been optimized and characterized at the fundamental singlet and first excited triplet electronic states. Crossing points are localized, and possible spin inversion processes are discussed by means of the intrinsic reaction coordinate approach. Relevant stationary points along the most favorable reaction pathways have been studied at the CCSD/6-311G(2d,p)//B3LYP/6-311G(2d,p) calculation level. The theoretical results allow the development of thermodynamic and kinetic arguments about the reaction pathways of the title process. In the singlet state, the first step is the barrierless obtention of a reactant complex associated with the formation of a V-C bond, while in the triplet state a three-membered ring addition complex with the V bonded to the two C atoms is obtained. Similar behavior is found in the exit channels: the product complexes can be formed from isolated products without barriers. The reactant and product complexes are the most stable stationary points in the singlet and triplet electronic states. From the singlet state reactant complex, two reaction pathways are posssible to reach the triplet state product complex. (i) A mechanism in which a hydrogen transfer process is the first and rate limiting step and the second step is an oxygen transfer between vanadium and carbon atoms with a concomitant change in the spin state. The crossing point between singlet and triplet spin states is not kinetically relevant because it takes place at a later stage occurring in the exit channel. (ii) A mechanism in which the first stage renders a four-membered ring between vanadyl cation and the ethylene fragment and an oxygencarbon bond is formed; on going from this minimum to the second transition structure, associated with a carbon-vanadium bond breaking process, the crossing point between singlet and triplet spin states is reached. The final step is the hydrogen transfer between both carbon atoms to yield the product complex. In this case the spin change opens a lower barrier pathway. The transition structures with larger values of relative energies for both reactive channels of VO2+ ((1)A(1)) + C2H4 (Ag-1) --> VO+ ((3)Sigma) + CH3CHO ((1)A') present similar energies, and the two reaction pathways can be considered as competitive.

The feasibility of using Streptomyces clavuligerus ATCC 27064 bioparticles supported on alginate gel containing alumina to produce clavulanic acid (CA) was investigated. To this end, effectiveness factors for spherical bioparticles, relating respiration rates of immobilised and free cells, were experimentally determined for various dissolved oxygen (DO) levels and bioparticle radii. Monod kinetics was assumed as representative of the oxygen consuming reaction, while internal oxygen diffusion was considered the limiting step. A comparison was made of the results from a tower bioreactor operating under batch, repeated-batch and continuous conditions with immobilised bioparticles. The theoretical curve of the effectiveness factor for the zero-order reaction model, considering an inert nucleus - the dead core model - was very well fitted to the experimental data. The results of the bioprocess indicated that the batch operation was the most efficient and productive, requiring a do concentration in the reactor above 60% of the saturation value. This article presents empirical correlations to predict the density, specific heat, thermal conductivity and rheological power-law parameters of liquid egg yolk over a temperature range compatible with its industrial thermal processing (0-61 C). Moreover, a mathematical model for a pasteurizer that takes into account the spatial variation of the overall heat transfer coefficient throughout the plate heat exchanger is presented, as are two of its simplified forms. The obtained correlations of thermophysical properties are applied for the simulation of the egg yolk pasteurization, and the obtained temperature profiles are used for evaluating the extent of thermal inactivation. A detailed simulation example shows that there is a considerable deviation between the designed level of heat treatment and that this is predicted through process simulation. It is shown that a reliable mathematical model, combined with specialized thermophysical property correlations, provide a more accurate design of the pasteurization equipment that ensures effective inactivation, while preserving nutritional and sensorial characteristics.

Groups of Wistar rats were fed with ration doped with uranyl nitrate at concentration A ranging from 0.5 to 100 ppm, starting after the weaning period and lasting until the postpuberty period when the animals were sacrificed. Uranium in the ashes of bones was determined by neutron activation analysis. It was found that the uranium concentration in the bones. as a function of A, exhibits a change in its slope at similar to20 ppm-a probable consequence of the malfunctioning of kidneys. The uranium transfer coefficient was obtained and an analytical expression was fitted into the data. thus allowing extrapolation down to low doses. Internal and localized doses were calculated. Absorbed doses exceeded the critical dose. even for the lowest uranium dosage.

Calculations based on density functional theory have been carried out to investigate the free energy profiles at singlet and triplet electronic states associated with the gas-phase ion/molecule reactions of VO2++ ((1)A(1)/(3)A) with propene. The complex potential energy Surfaces, including Six reaction pathways (three dehydrogenation and three oxygen transfer processes), have been explored and analyzed. Along dehydrogenation reactive channels, three final products can be obtained: V(OH)(2)(+) ((1)Sigma(+)/(3)Sigma(-)) and allene (path Dehl), being the most kinetically and thermodynamically favorable reaction pathway, V(OH)(2)(+) ((1)Sigma(+)/(3)Sigma(-)) and propyne (path Deh2),and VO2+ ((1)A(1)/(3)A) and H-2 plus allene (path Deh3). The oxyoenation processes can yield its final products Vo(+) ((1)Delta/(3)Sigma) and acetone (path Ox1), VO+ ((1)Delta/(3)Sigma 2) and propanaldehyde (path Ox2), and VO+ ((1)Delta/(3)Sigma) and H-2 and propenaldehyde (path Ox3). Both paths Deh1 and Deh2 are associated with two consecutive hydrogen transfer processes from carbon atoms of the propene fragment to vanadyl oxygen atoms, while in path Deh3 the second hydrogen migration takes place to the vanadiurn atorn followed by the formation ola hydrogen molecule. Both paths Ox1 and Ox2 comprise an intramolecular hydrogen transfer between the ethylenic moiety of the propene fragment, while two consecutive hydrogen transfer processes take place from the propene fragment to oxygen and vanadium atoms of the vanadyl moiety along path Ox3. Three crossing points between both electronic states take place along path Deh1 (CP-Deh1) and path Deh2 (CP-Deh2) and in the entrance channel of oxidation processes (CP-Ox). A comparison with previous works on related reactions VO2+ + C2H4, VO2 + C2H6, and VO2+ + C3H8 allows us to rationalize the different reactivity patterns.

Water waves generated by a solid mass is a complex phenomenon discussed in this paper by numerical and experimental approaches. A model based on shallow water equations with shocks (Saint Venant) has developed. It can reproduce the amplitude and the energy of the wave quite well, but because it consistently generates a hydraulic jump, it is able to reproduce the profile, in the case of high relative thickness of slide, but in the case of small relative thickness it is unable to reproduce the amplitude of the wave. As the momentum conservation is not verified during the phase of wave creation, a second technique based on discharge transfer coefficient α, is introduced at the zone of impact. Numerical tests have been performed and validated this technique from the experimental results of the wave's height obtained in a flume.

Despite its importance for designing evaporators and condensers, a review of the literature shows that heat transfer data during phase change of carbon dioxide is very limited, mainly for microchannel flows. In order to give a contribution on this subject, an experimental study of CO 2 evaporation inside a 0.8 mm-hydraulic diameter microchannel was performed in this work. The average heat transfer coefficient along the microchannel was measured and visualization of the flow patterns was conducted. A total of 67 tests were performed at saturation temperature of 23.3°C for a heat flux of 1800 W/(m2°C). Vapor qualities ranged from 0.005 to 0.88 and mass flux ranged from 58 to 235 kg/(m2s). An average heat transfer coefficient of 9700 W/(m2°C) with a standard deviation of 35% was obtained. Nucleate boiling was found to characterize the flow regime for the test conditions. The dryout of the flow, characterized by the sudden reduction in the heat transfer coefficient, was identified at vapor qualities around 0.85. Flow visualization results showed three flow patterns. For low vapor qualities (up to about 0.25), plug flow was predominant, while slug flow occurred at moderated vapor qualities (from about 0.25 to 0.50). Annular flow was the flow pattern for higher vapor qualities. Copyright © 2006 by ABCM.
