Optical absorption and applications of the ABO4 (A=Ca, Pb and B= Mo, W) semiconductors

Ternary molybdates and tungstates ABO4 (A=Ca, Pb and B= Mo, W) are a group of materials that could be used for a variety of optoelectronic applications. We present a study of the optoelectronic properties based on first-principles using several orbitaldependent one-electron potentials applied to several orbital subspaces. The optical properties are split into chemical-species contributions in order to quantify the microscopic contributions. Furthermore, the effect of using several one-electron potentials and orbital subspaces is analyzed. From the results, the larger contribution to the optical absorption comes from the B-O transitions. The possible use as multi-gap solar cell absorbents is analyzed.

SNAP-25 and synaptotagmin involvement in the final Ca(2+)-dependent triggering of neurotransmitter exocytosis.

In neurons, depolarization induces Ca2+ influx leading to fusion of synaptic vesicles docked at the active zone for neurotransmitter release. While a number of proteins have now been identified and postulated to participate in the assembly and subsequent disengagement of a vesicle docking complex for fusion, the mechanism that ultimately triggers neuroexocytosis remains elusive. Using a cell-free, lysed synaptosomal membrane preparation, we show that Ca2+ alone is sufficient to trigger secretion of glutamate and furthermore that Ca(2+)-signaled exocytosis is effectively blocked by antibodies and peptides to SNAP-25, a key constituent of the vesicle docking complex. In addition, Ca2+ inhibits the ability of synaptotagmin, a synaptic vesicle protein proposed as a calcium sensor and triggering device, to associate with this docking complex. These results support a model in which Ca(2+)-dependent triggering of neurotransmission at central synapses acts after ATP-dependent potentiation of the docking-fusion complex for membrane fusion.

Draft of the Rules, Directions, and Statutes of the Boylston Professorship of Rhetoric and Oratory in Harvard College, [ca. 1804]

This original draft was probably written by Eliphalet Pearson (1752-1826) as a member of the committee charged with the task of establishing the rules, directions, and statutes for the Boylston Professorship by the Harvard Corporation and the Board of Overseers. This draft is heavily edited and contains many cross outs through the text.

I. Calculation of the length of printed lines of all the volumes in the Harvard Library, ca. 1789

This series contains one small leaf with handwritten calculations related to the number of volumes in the Harvard College Library. The verso has the note: "No. of Vol: in Harvard College 11465 vol. making one line 15380 miles long. The document is in the hand of Loammi Baldwin Sr., and may have been created in 1789 while the Library was compiling a catalog of its holdings.

Mathematics notebook, ca. 1714-1718, with chronology of the reign of Augustus

The first two pages of this notebook contain a comparative chronology of the reign of Augustus, outlined in two columns. One column outlines the chronology according to ecclesiastical scholar Laurence Echard, and the other column outlines the chronology according to William Cave. The rest of the notebook contains extensive entries on the following subjects, with related rules, problems, and illustrations: fractions, decimals, arithmetical progression, geometrical progression, "disjunct proportion, or ye Golden Rule," signs and symbols, integers, geometrical definitions, and Euclidian geometry.

Sundry extracts on the subject of the taxation of College &c., ca. 1798-1801

Notebook with brown paper cover containing handwritten extracts from the charters and related legislation of New England academic, charitable, and commercial institutions regarding their ability to hold real estate and related tax exemptions. Most of the listed documents are dated in the 1780s and 1790s. The notebook also contains extracts from "Argument in the case of Poor's rate, charged on the College of Christ & Emmanuel in the University of Cambridge 1768." The item title is transcribed from a handwritten inscription on the back cover.

[Notes from the minutes of the Board of Overseers, ca. 1799]

Small notebook containing handwritten entries of actions for the years 1718-1799 recorded in Volumes I-IV of the Harvard Board of Overseers formal meeting minutes. The entries note the appointment of Committees of inquiry and votes related to salary increases and allowances.

"A list of the books belonging to the late Library of Harvard College that were in the hands of the Overseers, Governors, & Students of the College & escap'd the flames," ca. 1764

This list appears to be the most comprehensive in this series. Although its contents are very similar to those of the list in Folder 2, there are some discrepancies. Entries are arranged by format (folio, quarto, octavo) and include the date the book was "delivered" (loaned), the name of the individual who borrowed it, and its author, title, and volume number. Many of the books had been out of the library for decades prior to the fire, with some loaned out since as early as 1742.

This list appears to be a draft of the list in Folder 1. Although most of the entries match, there are some discrepancies.

This list appears to be in the hand of Andrew Eliot, Librarian from 1763 to 1767. Books are listed according to format (folio, quarto, octavo) and entries indicate the surname of the student who checked the book out, its author and title, and whether or not the book had since been "returned and sent down." Some entries indicate unusual locations, including "says he returned it to the Pres[ident]" and "Dr. Marsh has it."
