In the face of dramatic declines in groundfish populations and a lack of sufficient stock assessment information, a need has arisen for new methods of assessing groundfish populations. We describe the integration of seafloor transect data gathered by a manned submersible with high-resolution sonar imagery to produce a habitat-based stock assessment system for groundfish. The data sets used in this study were collected from Heceta Bank, Oregon, and were derived from 42 submersible dives (1988–90) and a multibeam sonar survey (1998). The submersible habitat survey investigated seafloor topography and groundfish abundance along 30-minute transects over six predetermined stations and found a statistical relationship between habitat variability and groundfish distribution and abundance. These transects were analyzed in a geographic information system (GIS) by using dynamic segmentation to display changes in habitat along the transects. We used the submersible data to extrapolate fish abundance within uniform habitat patches over broad areas of the bank by means of a habitat classification based on the sonar imagery. After applying a navigation correction to the submersible-based habitat segments, a good correlation with major boundaries on the backscatter and topographic boundaries on the imagery were apparent. Extrapolation of the extent of uniform habitats was made in the vicinity of the dive stations and a preliminary stock assessment of several species of demersal fish was calculated. Such a habitat-based approach will allow researchers to characterize marine communities over large areas of the seafloor.

A novel method for on-line topographic analysis of rough surfaces in the SEM has been investigated. It utilises a digital minicomputer configured to act as a programmable scan generator and automatic focusing unit. The computer is coupled to the microscope through digital-to-analogue converters which enable it to generate ramp waveforms allowing the beam to be scanned over a small sub-region of the field under program control. A further digital-to-analogue converter regulates the current supply to the objective lens of the microscope. The video signal is sampled by means of an analogue-to-digital converter and the resultant binary code stored in the computer's memory as an array of numbers describing relative image intensity. Computations based on the intensity gradient of the image allow the objective lens current to be found for the in-focus condition, which may be related to the working distance through a previous calibration experiment. The sensitivity of the method for detecting small height changes is theoretically of the order of 1 μm. In practice the operator specifies features of interest by means of a mobile spot cursor injected into the SEM display screen, or he may scan the specimen at sub-regions corresponding to pre-determined points on a regular grid defined by him. The operation then proceeds under program control. | A novel method for on-line topographic analysis of rough surfaces in the SEM has been investigated. One feature of earthquake loading in regions containing sloping ground is a marked increase in accelerations at the crests of slopes. Many field cases exist where such increased accelerations were measured. The observed increase in the amount and severity of observed building damage near the edge of cliff-type topographies has been attributed to the topographic amplification. To counter this, it has been shown that anchoring the soil mass responsible for this to the rest of the stable soil mass can reduce the amount of topographic amplification. In this study, dynamic centrifuge modelling will be used to identify the region affected by topographic amplification in a model slope. The soil accelerations recorded will be compared to those measured in a comparable model treated by anchors. In addition, the tension measured in the anchors will be examined in order to better understand how the anchors are transferring the loads and mitigating these amplifications. © 2010 Taylor & Francis Group, London.

A time multiplexed rectangular Zernike modal wavefront sensor based on a nematic phase-only liquid crystal spatial light modulator and specially designed for a high power two-electrode tapered laser diode which is a compact and novel free space optical communication source is used in an adaptive beam steering free space optical communication system, enabling the system to have 1.25 GHz modulation bandwidth, 4.6° angular coverage and the capability of sensing aberrations within the system and caused by atmosphere turbulence up to absolute value of 0.15 waves amplitude and correcting them in one correction cycle. Closed-loop aberration correction algorithm can be implemented to provide convergence for larger and time varying aberrations. Improvement of the system signal-to-noise-ratio performance is achieved by aberration correction. To our knowledge, it is first time to use rectangular orthonormal Zernike polynomials to represent balanced aberrations for high power rectangular laser beam in practice. © 2014 IEEE.

A method for accurate determination of the curvature radius of semiconductor thin films is proposed. The curvature-induced broadening of the x-ray rocking curve (XRC) of a heteroepitaxially grown layer can be determined if the dependence of the full width at half maximum (FWHM) of XRC is measured as a function of the width of incident x-ray beam. It is found that the curvature radii of two GaN films grown on a sapphire wafer are different when they are grown under similar MOCVD conditions but have different values of layer thickness. At the same time, the dislocation-induced broadening of XRC and thus the dislocation density of the epitaxial film can be well calculated after the curvature correction.

In recognition-based user interface, users’ satisfaction is determined not only by recognition accuracy but also by effort to correct recognition errors. In this paper, we introduce a crossmodal error correction technique, which allows users to correct errors of Chinese handwriting recognition by speech. The focus of the paper is a multimodal fusion algorithm supporting the crossmodal error correction. By fusing handwriting and speech recognition, the algorithm can correct errors in both character extraction and recognition of handwriting. The experimental result indicates that the algorithm is effective and efficient. Moreover, the evaluation also shows the correction technique can help users to correct errors in handwriting recognition more efficiently than the other two error correction techniques.
