An efficient organic light-emitting device using a trivalent europium (Eu) complex Eu(Tmphen)(TTA)(3) (TTA=thenoyltrifluoroacetone, Tmphen=3,4,7,8-tetramethyl-1,10-phenanthroline) as the dopant emitter was fabricated. The devices were a multilayer structure of indium tin oxide/N,N-diphenyl-N,N-bis(3-methylphenyl)-1,1-biphenyl-4,4-diamine (40 nm)/ Eu complex:4,4-N,N-dicarbazole-biphenyl (1%, 30 nm)/2,9-dimethyl,4,7-diphenyl-1,10phenanthroline (20 nm)/AlQ (30 nm)/LiF (1 nm)/Al (100 nm). A pure red light with a peak of 612 nm and a half bandwidth of 3 nm, which is the characteristic emission of trivalent europium ion, was observed. The devices show the maximum luminance up to 800 cd/m(2), an external quantum efficiency of 4.3%, current efficiency of 4.7 cd/A, and power efficiency of 1.6 lm/W. At the brightness of 100 cd/m(2), the quantum efficiency reaches 2.2% (2.3 cd/A).

The energy difference DeltaE between the spin-allowed and spin-forbidden states of Tb3+ in crystals is studied. The environmental factor he representing the character of the host is redefined by using the chemical band of complex crystals. The relationship between h(e) and DeltaE is found to be a linear relation. The results show that the energy difference between the spin-forbidden and spin-allowed states for Tb3+ ions in crystals can be predicted from the environmental factor.

A series of solid electrolytes Ce1-xSmxO2-y (x=0similar to0.6) were prepared by sol-gel method. XRD measurement showed that single-phase solid solution was formed in all investigated ranges at 160 degreesC, which is a significantly lower synthesis temperature compared to traditional solid state reaction. High temperature X-ray, ESR, and Raman scattering were used to characterize the samples. ESR measurement showed that ESR with sample irradiated by high-energy particle is an effective way to study the defect structure. These changes in the Raman spectrum are attributed to O vacancies, which are introduced into the lattice when tetravalent Ce4+ is substituted by trivalent Sm3+.

The coordination numbers for the samarium atoms and the Sm-O bond distances in SrB4O7:Sm and SrB6O10:Sm prepared in air were determined by means of Sm-L-3 edge EXAFS. The coordination. was found to be nine-folded for both these hosts and the bond distance was 2.40-2.42 Angstrom in SrB4O7:Sm and 2.42-2.44 Angstrom in SrB6O10:Sm. For SrB4O7:Sm the coordination number is coincident with that of the strontium. atoms suggesting the substitution of the samarium atoms at the strontium sites. The coordination number of the strontium atoms in SrB6O10 was also suggested to be nine assuming the same type of substitution. The valences of samarium were determined from the luminescent spectra. Both divalent and trivalent ions were present in both SrB4O7:Sm and SrB6O10:Sm, while the fraction of Sm2+ was higher in the former than in the latter. This difference has been assigned to the difference in rigidity between the B-O networks in these structures.

The optical properties of rare earth ions-activated barium orthophosphate phosphors, Ba-3(PO4)(2):RE (RE = Ce3+, Sm3+, Eu3+, Eu2+, and Tb3+), were investigated in vacuum ultraviolet (VLTV)-Vis range. A band-band transition Of PO43- in Ba-3(PO4)(2) is observed in the region of 150-170 nm. The partial reduction of Eu3+ to Eu2+ was observed and confirmed by luminescent spectra under the VUV-UV excitation. It is proposed that the electronegative defects that formed by aliovalent substitution of Eu3+ on the Ba2+ site in the host are responsible for the reduction process.

The VUV-UV spectra of rare earth ions activated calcium borophosphate, CaBPO5:RE (RE = Ce3+, sm(3+), Eu2+, Eu3+, Tb3+ and Dy3+) were determined. The bands at about 155 nm in the VUV excitation spectra are attributed to the host lattice absorptions. The bands at 166 and 190 nm for the sample CaBPO5:Sm have been considered as related to the f-d transition and the charge transfer band (CTB) of Sm3+ ions, and the band at 169 nm for the sample CaBPO5:Dy is assumed to be connected with the f-d transition of the Dy3+ ions in CaBPO5. The partial reduction of Eu3+ CaBPO5:Eu prepared by high temperature solid state reaction in air is confirmed by the VUV-UV spectra.

When alkaline earth ions in borates, phosphates or borophosphates [SrB4O7, SrB6O10, BaB8O13, MBPO5 (M=Ca,Sr)] are substituted partially and aliovalently by trivalent rare earth ions such as Sm3+, Eu3+, these rare earth ions can be reduced to divalent state by the produced negative charge vacancy V-M". The matrices must have appropriate structure containing a rigid three-dimensional network of tetragonal AO(4) groups (A=B,P). These groups can surround and isolate the produced divalent RE2+ ions from the reaction with oxygen. Therefore, this reduction reaction can be carried out even in air at high temperature. The produced divalent rare earth ions can be detected by luminescence and XANES methods and their spectroscopic properties are discussed.

The measurements of VUV-UV photoluminescence emission (PL) and photoluminescence excitation (PLE) spectra of rare earth ions activated strontium orthophosphate [Sr-3(PO4)(2):RE, RE = Ce, Sm, Eu, Tb] are performed. Whenever the samples are excited by VUV or UV light, the typical emission of Ce-3+,Ce- Sm3+, Eu3+, Eu2+ and Tb3+ ions can be observed in PL spectra, respectively. The charge transfer bands (CTBs) of Sm3+ and Eu3+ are found, respectively, peaking at 206 and 230nm. The absorption bands peaking in the region of 150-160 nm are assigned to the host lattice sensitization bands, i.e., the band-to-band transitions of PO43- grouping in Sr-3(PO4)(2). It is speculated that the first f-d transitions of Sm3+ (Eu3+), and the CTB of Tb3+ are, respectively, located around 165 (14 3) and 167 urn by means of VUV-UV PLE spectra and relational empirical formula, these f-d transitions or CT bands are included in the bands with the maxima at 150-160 nm, respectively. The valence change of europium from trivalent to divalent in strontium orthophosphate prepared in air is observe by VUV-UV PL and PLE spectra.

Monoclonal antibody technique was employed to detect the conformational change of calmodulin induced by metal ions. Bovine calmodulin was firstly modified by 2,4-dinitrofluorobenzene to improve its immunogenicity, then, the derived protein was saturated with trivalent europium ions and injected to Balb/c mice as antigen. After four times of immunization, a corresponding antibody was detected and its titer in serum was determined as 1 : 12 000. By fusing of the spleen cells with hybridoma cells, a europium induced conformation-specific anti-calmodulin monoclonal antibody cell strain named as 2C3 was produced successfully. The molecular recognition ability of antibody to apocalmodulin and holocalmodulin showed a significant difference, indicating that this antibody could be applied to the studies of different effects of metal ions on the conformational change of calmodulin and its interaction with target molecules.

The local structure and the valences of europium in SrBPO5:Eu prepared in air were checked by means of XAFS at Eu-L-3 edge. From the EXAFS results, it was discovered that the doped europium atoms were nine-coordinated by oxygen atoms and the distances of bond Eu-O were 2.42 Angstrom in the host. From the XANES data, it was found that the divalent and trivalent europium coexisted in the matrix. The emission spectra excited by VUV or UV exhibited a prominent broad band due to the 4f(6)5d-4f(7) transition of Eu2+ ions, which indicated that the trivalent europium ions were reduced in air in the matrix at high temperature by the defects [V-Sr]" formed by aliovalent substitution between Sr2+ and Eu3+ ions. The VUV excitation spectra in 100-200 nm range showed that the matrix had absorption bands with the maxima at about 130 and 150 nm, respectively.

XAFS (EXAFS and XANES) at Eu-L-3 edge were used to determine the local structure and the valences of europium in CaBPO5:Eu prepared in air. The results of EXAFS showed that the doped europium atoms were nine-coordinated by oxygen atoms and the distances of bond Eu-O were 2.39 Angstrom in the host lattice. XANES at Eu-L-3 edge exhibited that Eu2+ and Eu3+ coexisted in the matrix. The luminescent spectrum of the material excited by VUV at 147 nm presented a similar spectrum with that excited by f-f transition of Eu2+ at 396 nm and f-d transition of Eu2+ at 312 nm. The broad emission band due to both 4f(6)5d - 4f(7) transition of EU2+ and f - f transition of Eu3+ could be observed in emission spectra, which indicated that the trivalent europium ions were reduced in air in the matrix at high temperature by the defects [V-Cn]" formed by aliovalent substitution between Ca2+ and Eu3+ ions. The UV excitation spectrum showed the typical f-f transition of Eu3+ and f-d transition of Eu2+. The bands with the maxima at about 113 and 158 nm in VUV excitation spectrum were assigned to originate from the absorption of the host lattice.

The spectroscopic feature of divalent Sm2+, Eu2+, Tm2+ and Yb2+ is discussed in this paper. Especially the spectroscopic properties of some berates containing tetrahedral BO4 group such as SrB4O7, SrB6O10 and BaB8O13 doped with these divalent ions are reported. When the divalent alkaline earth ion in these berates is replaced partially by the above trivalent rare earth ion, the charge carried in the produced defects can be used as reductant to reduce the doped rare earth ion into divalent state at high temperature even in air. Therefore, a convenient and safe method is provided to prepared phosphors doped with these divalent rare earths.

By comparing the phosphorescence spectra of Gd(acac)(3) (acac=acetylacetone), Gd(TFacac)3 (TFacac=1,1,1-trifluoroacetylacetone), the effects of fluorine replacement of hydrogen on the triplet state energy of the ligands were revealed. Fluorine can lower the triplet state energy of Hacac and make it more suitable for energy transfer towards the D-5(4) state of terbium. Organic electroluminescent devices (OELDs) with the corresponding trivalent terbium complexes as emissive layers were fabricated. Triple-layer-type devices with a structure of glass substrate/ITO (indium tin oxide)/PVK [poly(N-vinylcarbazole)]/PVK : Tb complex: PBD [2-(4-biphenyl)-5-(4-tert-butylphenyl)-1,3,4-oxadiazole]/PBD/Al exhibit bright green luminescence upon applying a dc voltage. The luminance of a device with Tb(TFacac)(3)phen (1,10-phenanthroline) and Tb( TFacac) 3 as emissive layer is higher than that of the corresponding devices with Tb(acac)(3)(phen) and Tb(acac)(3) as emissive layers. The EL device with Tb(TFacac)(3)(phen) as emitter exhibits characteristic emission of Tb3+ ions with a maximum luminance of 58 cd m(-2) at 25 V.

The reduction process from trivalent to divalent state for Sm3+ and Yb3+ ions in barium berates (BaB8O13) prepared in air was observed. The luminescence properties of these divalent rare-earth ions were studied. Yb2+ shows an f-d broad emission band, due to the 4f(14) --> 4f(13)5d transition, while the Sm2+ ion shows an f --> f transition. From the spectra of Yb2+, and using the D-5(0) --> F-7(0) transition of Sm2+ as a structural probe, two crystallographic sites were found to be available for the cations in the host. Vibronic transitions of Sm2+ were observed at low temperature. BaB8O13 was found to be a good host for reducing the trivalent rare-earth ions to divalent state and to exhibit interesting spectroscopic properties,
