Pyrite is the most stable iron-sulfide in reduced environment, and plays an important role in geochemical iron-sulfur cycling of sediments. Thus, the presence of pyrite in sediments and rocks is an important indicator of sedimentary environments. Previous studies on the thermal products of pyrite showed that all of the products (e.g., pyrrhotite, magnetite, hematite) have strong capability of carrying remanence. To deepen our understanding of the environmental and paleomagnetic significances of pyrite, the mineral transformation processes of pyrite upon heating were systematically investigated in this study using intergrated rock magnetic experiments (in both argon and air atmospheres) and X-ray diffraction analysis. The room temperature susceptibility of the paramagnetic pyrite is about 2.68×10-5 SI. In argon atmosphere (reducing environment), pyrite was transformed into monoclinic stable single domain (SD) pyrrhotite above 440 C. The corresponding coercive force and remanence coercivity are about 20 mT and 30 mT, respectively. In contrast, in air atmosphere (oxidation environment), the intermediate thermal products of pyrite are magnetite and pyrrhotite, which were quickly further oxidated to SD hematite, which has coercivity of about 1400 mT. In addition, the hematite particles gradually grow from SD to PSD grain size region by multiple heating runs. The transformation processes of pyrite in oxidation atomosphere can be interpreted by three possible pathways: (1) pyrite→magnetite→hematite; (2) pyrite→pyrrhotite→magnetite→hematite; and (3) pyrite→pyrrhotite→hematite. Low-temperature magnetic experiments show no transitions for pyrite. Despite that low-temperature magnetic method is not suitable for identification of pyrite, it is clear in this study that the high-temperature thermomagnetic measurements (e.g., -T and J-T curves) are very sensitive to the presence of pyrite in sediments and rocks. Nevertheless, for the thermal treatment products, low-temperature magnetic measurements showed the 34 K transition of pyrrhotite and the 250 K Morine transition of hematite. Iron-sulfide has also been found on Martian meteorolites by other workers. Therefore, systematic study of rock magnetism of pyrite (and other iron-sulfides) and their products will have great significances for both paleomagnetism and planetary magnetism.

Chinese eolian deposits are especially suitable for the studies of paleoclimatic changes, environmental magnetism and remanence acquisition mechanisms. In the past two decades, many studies have documented their magnetic properties. However, some important problems, such as the origin of magnetic minerals, the mechanisms for enhancing magnetic susceptibility and the lock-in effect, remain debatable. Therefore, it is essential to detail the rock-magnetic properties of the eolian deposits. This study shows thermomagnetic analyses, petrographic measurements and soil chemistry methods can be combined to obtain a better understanding of the sequence of magnetic mineral alterations during thermal treatment and of the pedogenic mechanism responsible for the susceptibility enhancement. This helps to further develop the interpretation of paleoclimate records in the Holocene eolian deposits along a NW-SE transect of the loess plateau. A partial heating/cooling method and X-ray diffraction (XRD) analysis were performed on representative samples of the present-day loess, in order to investigate mineralogical changes during thermal treatment. The temperature-dependent susceptibility (TDS) and XRD results show complex alteration of magnetic phases during heating and cooling. The 300 ℃ susceptibility hump in heating curves might be due to the production of maghemite from less magnetic lepidocrocite during heating. Goethite is transformed into hematite when heating to above 300 ℃. The susceptibility decrease from 300 ℃ to 450 ℃ can be interpreted as the conversion of maghemite to hematite. This thermal instability makes it possible to quantatively estimate the maghemite contribution to the pedogenically-enhanced susceptibility in loess or paleosols. Minor occurrence of thermally-stable maghemite in the present-day loess is possible; nevertheless, the TDS measurements show that the degree of the thermally-induced alteration is closely related to pedogenesis. The TDS measurement and XRD analysis results demonstrate that although magnetite and hematite both exist in the Holocene loess eolian deposits and their modern source area, magnetite is the predominant contributor to magnetic susceptibility. Both magnetite and hematite are the primary carriers of the remanent magnetization. Fine-grained maghemite, mainly produced by pedogenesis, is significantly responsible for enhancement of the magnetic susceptibility in the Chinese loess and paleosols. Since the degree of oxidation of magnetite grains depends on climate, the presence of maghemite has paleoclimatic significance, and variations in climate could be reflected as variations in the amount of low-temperature oxidation. If that is the case, the TDS curves can be used to compare the effects of climate at different sampling sites. The TDS results along the studied NW-SE transect suggest that stronger pedogenesis results in higher content of maghemite and greater susceptibility decrease during thermal treatment. This behavior seems to indicate that the final product of pedogenic magnetite in Chinese loess and paleosols is maghemite, which makes significant contributions to the enhanced magnetic susceptibility of Chinese eolian deposits. It is interesting to note that the 510 ℃ Hopkinson/alteration peak is larger in the present-day loess than in the black loam for each section. Obiviously, the Hopkinson/alteration peak of the Holocene eolian deposits is closely related to the degree of pedogenesis, which is a function of climate, and thus the peak itself could be a useful climate indicator. There are three effects that may be important in producing this trend. First, low-temperature oxidation preferentially affects the finer single-domain magnetites responsible for the Hopkinson peak, which is therefore suppressed in the more oxidized loams. Second, the possible production of uniaxial magnetite with shape anisotropy can also lead to a relatively muted Hopkinson peak. There is, additionally, a third alternative, and the one preferred here, that the natural alteration processes involved in pedogenic susceptibility enhancement have probably depleted the supply of iron-bearing precursor phases, so that less new magnetite is formed on heating. In summary, the TDS method is very reliable and highly sensitive in detecting magnetic phase changes in eolian deposits during thermal treatment, which are closely related to pedogenic processes. Thus, the studied NW-SE transect clearly exhibits paleoclimatically-induced mineral- and rock-magnetic variations. It is suggested that TDS can be used as a new method for the analysis of pedogenesis and climatic change.

The TEM study of titanium-containing ZSM-5 zeolite before and after hydrothermal treatment was performed. The use of different TEM techniques, such as conventional TEM, HRTEM and EDX-line scans provides important information about the microscopic structure of the zeolite catalyst consisting from several phases. The hydrothermal treatment of zeolite powder leads to strong changes in the morphology of the constituting particles. They are characterized by a homogeneous structure before hydrothermal treatment while the occurrence of holes after thermal treatment was observed, These changes lead to the enrichment of zeolite with titanium which obviously enhance its catalytic activity. Some of the titanium surplus precipitates as TiO2 anatase nanoparticles within the holes. (C) 2001 Elsevier Science B.V. All rights reserved.

The structure and properties of Sm overlayer and Sm/Rh surface alloy have been investigated with Auger electron spectroscopy (AES), low energy electron diffraction (LEED), X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), and temperature programmed desorption spectroscopy (TDS). The growth of Sm on Rh(100) at room temperature (RT) appears following the Stranski-Krastanov growth mode and only the trivalent state Sm is observed from XPS results. Thermal treatment of the Sm film at 900 K leads to the formation of ordered surface alloy which shows the c(5 root2 x root2)R45 degrees and c(2 x 2) LEED patterns. Annealing the Sm film at temperature above 400 K makes the binding energy (B.E.) of Sm 3d(5/2) shift to higher energy by 0.7 eV, which indicates charge transfer from Sm to Rh(100) substrate, causing the increase of CO desorption temperature.

The silver catalyzed, selective catalytic reduction (SCR) of nitrogen oxides (NOx) by CH4, is shown to be a structure-sensitive reaction. Pretreatment has a great affect on the catalytic performances. Upon thermal treatment in inert gas stream, thermal induced changes in silver morphology lead to the formation of reduced silver species of clusters and particles. Catalysis over this catalyst indicates an initially higher activity but lower selectivity for the CH4-SCR of NOx Reaction induced restructuring of silver results in the formation of ill-defined silver oxides. This, in turn, impacts the adsorption properties and diffusivity of oxygen over silver catalyst, results in the decrease in activity but increase in selectivity of Ag-H-ZSM-5 catalyst for the CH4-SCR of NO.. Purpose. To study thermal stability of Aspirin and define thermal events that are associated with the thermal degradation of aspirin. Methods. Experiments were performed using a DSC 823e (Mettler Toledo, Swiss). Aspirin is prone to thermal degradation upon exposure to high temperatures. The melting point of aspirin is 140.1±0.4ºC (DSC). Aspirin has been examined by heating samples to 120ºC, 155ºC and 185ºC with subsequent cooling to -55ºC and a final heating to 155ºC. Although different heating and cooling ranges have been used, only results obtained at a rate of 10ºC/min will be presented. All runs where conducted in hermetically sealed pans. Results. Upon heating the sample to 120ºC no significant thermal event can be detected. After cooling the sample and reheating a glass transition can be observed at ~-8ºC, followed by the melting of aspirin at ~139ºC. By heating the sample to 155ºC melting of aspirin has been detected at ~139ºC. On cooling and subsequent heating a glass transition occurs at ~-32ºC, together with a broad crystallisation (onset at ~38ºC and peak maximum at ~57ºC) followed by a broad melting with an onset at 94ºC and peak maximum at ~112ºC. Finally, by heating the sample to 185ºC melting at ~ 139ºC was observed, and upon cooling and reheating a glass transition was detected at ~-26ºC and no further events could be recorded. Conclusions. This research demonstrates that the degradation steps of Aspirin depend on the thermal treatment. The main degradation products of different thermal treatments are currently unknown it is clear that acetic acid, which is one of the degradation products, acts as an antiplasticiser by lowering the glass transition temperature. In addition, due to the presence of the degradation products in liquid form (observed by hot stage microscopy), Aspirin is still present in the sample and recrystallises during the second heating step and melts at much lower temperatures.

After thermal treatment of a mixture of glucose and glycine for 2 h at 125 degreesC, about 60% of the starting material was converted into nonsoluble, black pigments, whereas 40% of the mixture was still water-soluble. Dialysis of the latter fraction revealed 30.4% of low molecular weight compounds (LMWs; MW <10 000 De) and 10.0% high-molecular weight products [HMWs; MW greater than or equal to 10000 Dal. The water-soluble Maillard reaction products (MRPs) were separated by gel permeation chromatography and ultrafiltration, revealing that 60% of the water-soluble products of the total carbohydrate/amino acid mixture had MWs <1 000 Da and consisted mainly of non-coloured reaction products. MRPs with MWs between 1000 and 30000 Da were Found in comparatively low yields (about 1.3%). In contrast, about 31.1% of the MRPs exhibited MWs > 30000 Da, amongst which 14.5% showed MWs > 100000 Da, thus indicating an oligomerisation of LMWs to melanoidins under roasting conditions. To investigate the physiological effects of these MRPs, xenobiotic enzyme activities were analysed in intestinal Caco-2 cells. For Phase-I NADPH-cytochrome c-reductase, the activity in the presence of the LMW and HMW fraction was decreased by 13% and 22%: respectively. Phase-II glutathione-S-transferase activity decreased by 15% and 18%, respectively, after incubation with the LMW and the HMW fractions. Considering the different yields, 30% and 10%, respectively, of the LMW and the HMW fractions, the total amount of the LMW fraction present in the glucose-glycine mixture is more active in modulating three enzyme activities than that of the HMW fraction.

The Maillard reaction causes changes to protein structure and occurs in foods mainly during thermal treatment. Melanoidins, the final products of the Maillard reaction, may enter the gastrointestinal tract, which is populated by different species of bacteria. In this study, melanoidins were prepared from gluten and glucose. Their effect on the growth of faecal bacteria was determined in culture with genotype and phenotype probes to identify the different species involved. Analysis of peptic and tryptic digests showed that low molecular mass products are formed from the degradation of melanoidins. Results showed a change in the growth of bacteria. This in vitro study demonstrated that melanoidins, prepared from gluten and glucose, affect the growth of the gut microflora.

An elegant way to prepare catalytically active microreactors is by applying a coating of zeolite crystals onto a metal microchannel structure. In this study the hydrothermal formation of ZSM-5 zeolitic coatings on AISI 316 stainless steel plates with a microchannel structure has been investigated at different synthesis mixture compositions. The procedures of coating and thermal treatment have also been optimized. Obtaining a uniform thickness of the coating within 0.5 mm wide microchannels requires a careful control of various synthesis variables. The role of these factors and the problems in the synthesis of these zeolitic coatings are discussed. In general, the synthesis is most sensitive to the H2O/Si ratio as well as to the orientation of the plates with respect to the gravity vector. Ratios of H2O/Si=130 and Si/template=13 were found to be optimal for the formation of a zeolitic film with a thickness of one crystal at a temperature of 130 degreesC and a synthesis time of about 35 h. At such conditions, ZSM-5 crystals were formed with a typical size of 1.5 mu mx1.5 mu mx1.0 mum and a very narrow (within 0.2 mum) crystal size distribution. The prepared samples proved to be active in the selective catalytic reduction (SCR) of NO with ammonia. The activity tests have been carried out in a plate-type microreactor. The microreactor shows no mass transfer limitations and a larger SCR reaction rate is observed in comparison with pelletized Ce-ZSM-5 catalysts; (C) 2001 Elsevier Science B.V. All rights reserved.

In the preparation of silica-supported nickel oxide from nickel nitrate impregnation and drying, the replacement of the traditional air calcination step by a thermal treatment in 1% NO/Ar prevents agglomeration, resulting in highly dispersed NiO. The mechanism by which NO prevents agglomeration was investigated by using combined in situ diffuse reflectance infrared fourier transform (DRIFT) spectroscopy and mass spectrometry (MS). After impregnation and drying, a supported nickel hydroxynitrate phase with composition Ni(3)(NO(3))(2)(OH)(4) had been formed. Comparison of the evolution of the decomposition gases during the thermal decomposition of Ni(3)(NO(3))(2)(OH)(4) in labeled and unlabeled NO and O(2) revealed that NO scavenges oxygen radicals, forming NO(2). The DRIFT spectra revealed that the surface speciation evolved differently in the presence of NO as compared with in O(2) or Ar. It is proposed that oxygen scavenging by NO depletes the Ni(3)(NO(3))(2)(OH)(4) phase of nitrate groups, creating nucleation sites for the formation of NiO, which leads to very small (similar to 4 nm) NiO particles and prevents agglomeration.

Ready-to-eat (RTE) foods can be readily consumed with minimum or without any further preparation; their processing is complex—involving thorough decontamination processes— due to their composition of mixed ingredients. Compared with conventional preservation technologies, novel processing technologies can enhance the safety and quality of these complex products by reducing the risk of pathogens and/ or by preserving related health-promoting compounds. These novel technologies can be divided into two categories: thermal and non-thermal. As a non-thermal treatment, High Pressure Processing is a very promising novel methodology that can be used even in the already packaged RTE foods. A new “volumetric” microwave heating technology is an interesting cooking and decontamination method directly applied to foods. Cold Plasma technology is a potential substitute of chlorine washing in fresh vegetable decontamination. Ohmic heating is a heating method applicable to viscous products but also to meat products. Producers of RTE foods have to deal with challenging decisions starting from the ingredients suppliers to the distribution chain. They have to take into account not only the cost factor but also the benefits and food products’ safety and quality. Novel processing technologies can be a valuable yet large investment for several SME food manufacturers, but they need support data to be able to make adequate decisions. Within the FP7 Cooperation funded by the European Commission, the STARTEC project aims to develop an IT decision supporting tool to help food business operators in their risk assessment and future decision making when producing RTE foods with or without novel preservation technologies.

The growth mechanism of epitaxial BaTiO3 films on vicinal Nb-doped SrTiO3 (srTiO(3):Nb) (001) substrate surfaces was studied in terms of surface morphology, crystalline orientation, microstructure, and film/substrate interface. Well-oriented BaTiO3 thin films were grown on SrTiO3 substrates with well-defined terraces by pulsed laser deposition. The regularly terraced TiO2-terminated surfaces of vicinal SrTiO3:Nb (001) substrates were prepared by a definite chemical and thermal treatment. Under our conditions, BaTiO3 seems to grow with a layer-then-island (Stranski-Krastanov) growth mechanism. In order to investigate the orientation and crystallinity of the BaTiO3 films, x-ray diffraction and high-resolution transmission election microscopy were performed. Ferroelectricity of the BaTiO3 films was proved by electrical measurements performed on Pt/BaTiO3/SrTiO3:Nb heterostructures.

In this paper, the processing and characterization of Polyamide 6 (PA6) nanocomposites containing graphite nanoplatelets (GNPs) is reported. PA6 nanocomposites were prepared by melt-mixing using an industrial, co-rotating, intermeshing, twin-screw extruder. A bespoke screw configuration was used that was designed in-house to enhance nanoparticle dispersion into a polymer matrix. The effects of nano-filler type (xGnPTM M-5 and xGnPTM C-500), nano-filler content, and extruder screw speed on the bulk properties of the PA6 nanocomposites were investigated. The crystalline structures of PA6 nanocomposites are related to thermal treatment, stress history and the presence of moisture and nanofillers. DSC, Raman and XRD studies show an increase in crystallinity with increasing GNP content and a phase transformation between α-form to γ-form crystals as a result of the heterophase nucleation effect. The effect of uniaxial stretching on PA6 nanocomposites was investigated by drawing specimens heated at temperatures below the melting temperature. DSC and Raman studies on the drawn samples show an increase in yield stress as the GNP content increases due to the strain induced crystallization and γ—β transition during stretching. The rheological response of the nanocomposites resemble that of a ‘pseudo-solid’, rather than a molten liquid, and analysis of the rheological data indicates that a percolation threshold was reached at GNP contents of between 10–15wt%. An increase in tensile modulus of as much as 412% was observed for PA6/C-500 xGnPTM composites, at a filler content of 20wt%. The enhancement of Young’s modulus and yield stress can be attributed to the reinforcing effect of GNPs and their uniform dispersion in the PA6 matrix. The electrical conductivity of the composite also increased with increasing GNP content, with an addition of 15wt% GNP resulting in a 6 order-of-magnitude increase in conductivity. The effects of uniaxial-drawing and the inclusion of multiple nano-filler varieties on the electrical and mechanical properties are currently under investigation.
