Mapping journalism cultures across nations : a comparative study of 18 countries

This article reports key findings from a comparative survey of the role perceptions, epistemological orientations and ethical views of 1800 journalists from 18 countries. The results show that detachment, non-involvement, providing political information and monitoring the government are considered essential journalistic functions around the globe. Impartiality, the reliability and factualness of information, as well as adherence to universal ethical principles are also valued worldwide, though their perceived importance varies across countries. Various aspects of interventionism, objectivism and the importance of separating facts from opinion, on the other hand, seem to play out differently around the globe. Western journalists are generally less supportive of any active promotion of particular values, ideas and social change, and they adhere more to universal principles in their ethical decisions. Journalists from non-western contexts, on the other hand, tend to be more interventionist in their role perceptions and more flexible in their ethical views.

Journalism Across Cultures : An Introduction

In today's global digital world, journalists are required to be cognizant of ethical and cultural issues beyond usual national boundaries. Drawing on global examples, this text examines international journalism through the authors' wide variety of cultural, educational, teaching and learning backgrounds, including their professional and practical experiences. While existing books tend to be more focused on specific regions or specific aspects of journalism, this book addresses in a comprehensive way journalism across cultures from a truly global (and holistic) perspective. It analyzes media systems in Africa, Latin America, the Arab world and the Middle East, China, as well as North America and Western Europe. This text is truly interdisciplinary in theoretical and practical approaches because it draws on other fields such as media and cultural studies, anthropology, sociology, linguistics, as well as politics and international relations. It will provide an introduction to cross-cultural journalism and equip students with the skills and understanding they need today.

Active control of car suspension systems using IDA-PBC

This paper considers the design of active control for car suspension systems using a particular form of energy-based control called Interconnection-and-Damping-Assignment Passivity-Based Control (IDA-PBC). This approach allows one to shape the kinetic and potential energy as well as modify the power flow among different components of the system by changing the interconnection and dissipative structure in a meaningful way. Different controller parameterisations are considered to design a class of controllers for active suspension systems.

Contemporary cultures of service delivery to families : implications for music therapy

Family-centred and early intervention and prevention programs are a strong focus of current policy objectives within Australia, and a significant area of practice within the music therapy community. Recent shifts in the culture of policy and practice increasingly reflect ecological understandings by focussing on integrated and place-based approaches to service delivery. Further, current funding opportunities are strongly concerned with the extent to which interventions are able to reach out to highly vulnerable families that typically do not engage with services easily. Music therapy holds unique promise within these cultural shifts and thus advocates must develop a solid understanding of the concepts and related language in order to confidently engage with both funding and service systems. This paper uses an integrative review to first define and summarise current knowledge in three key areas relevant to contemporary Australian policy and practice: hard-to-reach families, home visiting as assertive outreach, and integrated or place-based service delivery. Evidence for the effectiveness of music therapy in relation to these key themes is then presented. Finally, the paper discusses the implications for the future of music therapy within the current Australian early intervention and prevention policy context and makes recommendations for moving forward on both practice and research fronts. While there is growing evidence and theory to suggest that music therapy may be uniquely efficacious in this area, greater Australian Journal of Music Therapy Vol 25, 2014 149 advocacy, documentation, research and adjustment of practices and language will further cement the position of the industry.

MT1-MMP-dependent and -independent regulation of gelatinase A activation in long-term, ascorbate-treated fibroblast cultures: Regulation by fibrillar collagen

Human skin fibroblasts were cultured long-term in the presence of ascorbic acid to allow formation of a three-dimensional collagen matrix, and the effects of this on activation of secreted matrix metalloproteinase-2 (MMP-2) were examined. Accumulation of collagen over time correlated with increased levels of both mature MMP-2 and cell-associated membrane type 1-MMP (MT1-MMP), and subsequently increased mRNA levels for MT1-MMP, providing temporal resolution of the "nontranscriptional" and "transcriptional" effects of collagen on MT-1MMP functionality. MMP-2 activation by these cultures was blocked by inhibitors of prolyl-4-hydroxylase, or when fibroblasts derived from the collagen α1(I) gene-deficient Mov-13 mouse were used. MMP-2 activation by the Mov-13 fibroblasts was rescued by transfection of a full-length α1(I) collagen cDNA, and to our surprise, also by transfection with an α1(I) collagen cDNA carrying a mutation at the C-proteinase cleavage, which almost abrogated fibrillogenesis. Although studies with ascorbate-cultured MT1-MMP-/- fibroblasts showed that MT1-MMP played a significant role in the collagen-induced MMP-2 activation, a residual MT1-MMP-independent activation of MMP-2 was seen which resembled the level of MMP-2 activation persisting when wild-type fibroblasts were cultured in the presence of both ascorbic acid and MMP inhibitors. We were also unable to block this residual activation with inhibitors specific for serinyl, aspartyl, or cysteinyl enzymes.

A different breed altogether? Distinctions between local and metropolitan journalism cultures

While a number of scholars have explored the special exigencies of local as opposed to metropolitan journalism, rarely have studies examined such differences in relation to journalism culture as constituted by journalists’ professional views. To address the gap in our knowledge, this study reports results from a representative survey of local and metropolitan newspaper journalists in Australia. Findings suggest that territorial context accounts for some significant differences in journalists’ demographics, as well as their role perceptions. In line with past research, local newspaper journalists exhibit much stronger support for the community forum and advocacy role. At the same time, and contrary to expectations, there is very little difference in their support of the watchdog role compared with metropolitan journalists. By combining questions about journalistic ideals and enactment in their work, and finding differences in the two, this study also has important implications for the methodological development of survey studies.

Effects of selective oestrogen receptor modulators on proliferation in tissue cultures of pre- and postmenopausal human endometrium

We characterised the effects of selective oestrogen receptor modulators (SERM) in explant cultures of human endometrium tissue. Endometrium tissues were cultured for 24 h in Millicell-CM culture inserts in serum-free medium in the presence of vehicle,17 beta-estradiol (17 beta-E2,1 nM), oestrogen receptor (ER) antagonist ICI 164.384 (40 nM), and 4-OH-tamoxifen (40 nM), raloxifene (4 nM), lasofoxifene (4 nM)and acolbifene (4 nM). Protein expression of ER alpha, ER beta 1 and Ki-67 were evaluated by immunohistochemistry (IHC). The proliferative fraction was assessed by counting the number of Ki-67 positive cells. Nuclear staining of ER( and ER(1 was observed in the glandular epithelium and stroma of pre- and postmenopausal endometrium. ER(1 protein was also localized in the endothelial cells of blood vessels. Treating premenopausal endometrium tissue with 17 beta-E2 increased the fraction of Ki-67 positive cells (p < 0.001) by 55% in glands compared to the control. Raloxifene (4 nM) increased (p < 0.05) the Ki-67 positive fraction. All other SERMS did not affect proliferation in this model. Treating postmenopausal endometrium with 17(-E2 increased (p < 0.001) the fraction of Ki-67 positive cells by 250% in glands compared to the control. A similar effect was also seen for 4-OH-tamoxifen, whereas the rest of SERMs did not stimulate proliferation. We demonstrated that oestradiol increases the fraction of proliferating cells in short term explant cultures of postmenopausal endometrium. In addition, we were able to reveal the agonistic properties of 4-OH-tamoxifen and confirm that raloxifene and next-generation SERMs acolbifene and lasofoxifene were neutral on the human postmenopausal endometrium. Shaping safe drinking cultures : evoking positive emotion to promote moderate-drinking behaviour

Social marketing by Western governments that use fear tactics and threatening information to promote anti-drinking messages has polarized ‘binge drinking’ and ‘moderate drinking’ through a continuum that implies benefits and harms for both individuals and society. With the goal of extending insights into social marketing approaches that promote safer drinking cultures in Australia, we discuss findings from a study that examines alcohol consumers' moderate-drinking intentions. By applying the theory of planned behaviour and emotions theory, we discuss survey results from a sample of alcohol consumers, which demonstrate that positively framed value propositions that evoke happiness and love are more influential in the processing of an alcohol moderation message for alcohol consumers. The key limitations of this study are the cross-sectional nature of the data and the focal-dependent variable being behavioural intentions rather than behaviours. Research insight into the stronger influence of positive emotions on processing an alcohol moderation message establishes an important avenue for future social marketing communications that moves beyond negative, avoidance appeals to promote behaviour change in drinkers. These research findings will benefit professionals involved in developing social change campaigns that promote and reinforce consumers' positive intentions, with messages about the benefits of controlled, moderate drinking.

Dewatering of microalgal cultures : a major bottleneck to algae-based fuels

Microalgae dewatering is a major obstruction to industrial-scale processing of microalgae for biofuel prodn. The dil. nature of harvested microalgal cultures creates a huge operational cost during dewatering, thereby, rendering algae-based fuels less economically attractive. Currently there is no superior method of dewatering microalgae. A technique that may result in a greater algal biomass may have drawbacks such as a high capital cost or high energy consumption. The choice of which harvesting technique to apply will depend on the species of microalgae and the final product desired. Algal properties such as a large cell size and the capability of the microalgae to autoflocculate can simplify the dewatering process. This article reviews and addresses the various technologies currently used for dewatering microalgal cultures along with a comparative study of the performances of the different technologies.

Developing a three-dimensional in-vitro cell culture model for studying breast and prostate cancer using starPEG-heparin hydrogels

Introduction Hydrogels prepared from poly(ethylene glycol) (PEG) and maleimide-functionalized heparin provide a potential matrix for use in developing three dimensional (3D) models. We have previously demonstrated that these hydrogels support the cultivation of human umbilical vein endothelial cells (HUVECs) (1). We extend this body of work to study the ability to create an extracellular matrix (ECM)-like model to study breast and prostate cancer cell growth in 3D. Also, we investigate the ability to produce a tri-culture mimicking tumour angiogenesis with cancer spheroids, HUVECs and mesenchymal stem cells (MSC). Materials and Methods The breast cancer cell lines, MCF-7 and MDA-MB-231, and prostate cancer cell lines, LNCaP and PC3, were seeded into starPEG-heparin hydrogels and grown for 14 Days to analyse the effects of varying hydrogel stiffness on spheroid development. Resulting hydrogel constructs were analyzed via Alamar Blue assays, light microscopy, and immunofluorescence staining for cytokeratin 8/18, Ki67 and E-Cadherin. Cancer cell lines were then pre-grown in hydrogels for 5-7 days and then re-seeded into starPEG-heparin hydrogels functionalised with RGD, SDF-1, bFGF and VEGF as spheroids with HUVECs and MSC and grown for 14 days as a tri-culture in Endothelial Cell Growth Medium (ECGM; Promocell). Cell lines were also seeded as a single cell suspension into the functionalised tri-culture system. Cultures were fixed in 4% paraformaldehyde and analysed via immunostaining for Von Willebrand Factor and CD31, as well as the above mentioned markers, and observed using confocal microscopy. Results Cultures prepared in MMP-cleavable starPEG-heparin hydrogels display spheroid formation in contrast to adherent growth on tissue culture plastic. Small differences were visualised in cancer spheroid growth between different gel stiffness across the range of cell lines. Cancer cell lines were able to be co-cultivated with HUVECs and MSC. HUVEC tube formation and cancer line spheroid formation occured after 3-4 days. Interaction was visualised between tumours and HUVECs via confocal microscopy. Slightly increased interaction was seen between cancer tumours and micro-vascular tubes when seeded as single cells compared with the pre-formed spheroid approach. Further studies intend to utilise cytokine gradients to further optimise the ECM environment of in situ tumour angiogenesis. Discussion and Conclusions Our results confirm the suitability of hydrogels constructed from starPEG-heparin for HUVECs and MSC co-cultivation with cancer cell lines to study cell-cell and cell-matrix interactions in a 3D environment. Strategies for the suspension and prevention of disconnection: Rendering disconnection as socioecenomic lubricant with Facebook

This paper attends to the idea of disconnection as a way of theorising people’s lived experience of social networking sites. Enrolling and extending a disconnective practice lens we suggest that the disconnective strategies of suspension and prevention are operational necessities for those we might see as the users and owners of sites such as Facebook. Indeed, our work demonstrates that disconnection in these contexts need not be associated only with modes of resistance and departure, but can also act as socioeconomic lubricant.
