Objectives: To compare hippocampal surface structure, using large deformation high dimensional mapping (HDM-LD), in subjects with temporal lobe epilepsy (TLE) with (HS+ve) and without (HS−ve) hippocampal sclerosis.

Methods
: The study included 30 HS−ve subjects matched with 30 HS+ve subjects from the previously reported epilepsy patient cohort. To control for normal right–left asymmetries of hippocampal surface structure, subjects were regrouped based on laterality of onset of epileptic seizures and presence of HS. Gender ratio, age, duration of epilepsy and seizure frequency were calculated for each of the four groups. Final HDM-LD surface maps of the right and left TLE groups were compared to define differences in subregional hippocampal involvement within the groups.

Results
: There were no significant differences in comparisons of the left TLE (left HS−ve compared with HS+ve) or right TLE (right HS−ve compared with HS+ve) groups with respect to age, duration of epilepsy or seizure severity scores. HDM-LD maps showed accentuated surface changes over the lateral hippocampal surface, in the region of the Sommer sector, in the hippocampi affected by HS. However, HS−ve hippocampi showed maximal surface changes in a different pattern, and did not involve the region of Sommer sector.

Conclusion
: We conclude that differences in segmental volume loss between the HS−ve and HS+ve groups are suggestive that the underlying pathophysiology of hippocampal changes in the two groups is different, and not related to chronic seizure duration or severity.

Characteristics of the “contraction” twins, formed close to the fracture surface in Mg–3Al–1Zn alloy deformed in tension approximately perpendicular to the grain c-axes, are investigated using transmission electron microscopy. The grain c-axis contractions were largely accommodated by {1011}-{1012} source double-twins in a variant characterized by 38° ⟨1210⟩ source twin/matrix misorientation in conjunction with dislocation slip. A possible interpretation of the observed preference for this variant formation is given and some crystal plasticity modelling is performed to elucidate the matter.

A strongly textured sheet of magnesium alloy AZ31 has been subjected to tensile testing at temperatures between ambient and 300°C. Structures have been examined by optical and transmission electron microscopy and also by atomic force microscopy to quantify surface displacements seen at grain boundaries. Plastic anisotropy varies strongly with test temperature as was observed previously by Agnew and Duygulu. The present findings do not support the view that crystallographic <c + a> becomes a major contributor to deformation at higher temperatures. Rather, the material behaviour reflects an increasing contribution from grain boundary sliding despite the relatively high strain rate (I 0-3 s-1) used in the mechanical tests.

The bond strength of various metal multilayers produced by cold rolling of metal foils with different thermal conductivity was investigated. Results indicated that under the same conditions of deformation and surface preparation, the metallic multilayer system with low thermal conductivity exhibited relative high bond strength while high thermal conductivity metal system may fail to be roll-bonded together. The relationship between the deformation-induced localized heating and the bond strength were discussed. The deformation-induced localized heating in the low thermal conductivity metal multilayer systems may provide opportunities for achieving a successful accumulative roll bonding or a “cold roll/heat treatment/cold roll” process to synthesize metallic multilayer materials.

In the automotive industry, press production rates often need to be reduced in order to minimize tool wear issues and successfully stamp advanced high strength steels. This indicates that heating affects may be important. This paper examines friction and deformational heating at the die radius during sheet metal stamping, using finite element analysis. The results show that high temperatures, of up to 130°C, can occur at the die radius surface. Such behavior has not been previously reported in the literature, for what is expected to be ‘cold’ sheet metal stamping conditions. It will be shown that the temperature rise is due to the increased contact stresses and increased plastic work, associated with stamping AHSS. Consequently, new insights into the local contact conditions in sheet metal stamping were obtained. The outcomes of this work may impact the wear models and tests employed for future tool wear analyses in sheet metal stamping.

This paper describes an experiment designed to measure surface and hydrodynamic forces between a mercury drop and a flat mica surface immersed in an aqueous medium. An optical interference technique allows measurement of the shape of the mercury drop as well as its distance from the mica, for various conditions of applied potential, applied pressure, and solution conditions. This enables a detailed exploration of the surface forces, particularly double-layer forces, between mercury and mica. A theoretical analysis of drop shape under the influence of surface forces shows that deformation of the drop is a sensitive indicator of the forces, as well as being a very important factor in establishing the overall interaction between the solid and the fluid.

Two curved surfaces of molecularly smooth mica are brought into contact under a controlled load, and their deformed shape is measured using optical interference fringes of equal chromatic order. This technique allows exceptionally accurate measurements of surface profiles at separations down to a molecular scale. Contact between the surfaces can be made either adhesive or nonadhesive by suitable choice of the medium between them. Results have been obtained in both cases and compared with the theories of Hertz (nonadhesive contact) and Johnson, Kendall, and Roberts (adhesive contact).

Surface mechanical attrition treatment (SMAT), a novel surface severe plastic deformation method, was carried out for titanium (Ti) to create a gradient-structured Ti (SMAT Ti). The tribological behaviour was studied under different loads and dry sliding conditions. The results showed that the deformation layer of SMAT Ti was about 160 μm. The friction and wear results showed that the wear resistance of SMAT Ti was enhanced compared to the coarse-grained (CG) counterpart. SMAT Ti showed abrasive wear under 1 and 5 N, and exhibited abrasive and adhesive wear under 2 N. While CG Ti showed abrasive and adhesive wear under 1-2 N, and exhibited abrasive wear under 5 N for the work hardening effects.

A nanocrystalline (NC) layer with the thickness of 30 µm was produced on pure titanium surface by surface mechanical attrition treatment (SMAT). Microstructure observation indicated that the grain size increases with depth from the treated surface. The friction coefficient decreases and the wear resistance increases with the SMAT sample as compared to its coarse-grained counterpart. The improvement of the wear properties could be attributed to the higher hardness of SMAT sample.

A modified axisymmetric forward spiral extrusion (AFSE) has been proposed recently to enhance the strain accumulation during the process. The new technique is called variable lead axisymmetric forward spiral extrusion (VLAFSE) that features a variable lead along the extrusion direction. To assess the effect of design modification on plastic deformation, a comprehensive study has been performed here using a 3D transient finite element (FE) model. The FE results established the shear deformation as the dominant mode of deformation which has been confirmed experimentally. The variable lead die extends strain accumulation in the radial and longitudinal directions over the entire grooved section of the die and eliminates the rigid body rotation which occurs in the case of a constant lead die, AFSE. A comparison of forming loads for VLAFSE and AFSE proved the advantages of the former design in the reduction of the forming load which is more pronounced under higher frictional coefficients. This finding proves that the efficiency of VLAFSE is higher than that of AFSE. Besides, the significant amount of accumulated shear strain in VLAFSE along with non-axisymmetric distribution of friction creates a surface feature in the processed sample called zipper effect that has been investigated. © 2012 Springer Science+Business Media New York.

IF steel sheets were processed by conventional symmetric and asymmetric rolling (ASR) at ambient temperature. The asymmetry was introduced in a geometric way using differential roll diameters with a number of different ratios. The material strength was measured by tensile testing and the microstructure was analyzed by optical and transmission electron microscopy as well as electron backscatter diffraction (EBSD) analysis. Texture was also successfully measured by EBSD using large surface areas. Finite element (FE) simulations were carried out for multiple passes to obtain the strain distribution after rolling. From the FE results, the velocity gradient along selected flow lines was extracted and the evolution of the texture was simulated using polycrystal plasticity modeling. The best mechanical properties were obtained after ASR using a roll diameter ratio of 2. The textures appeared to be tilted up to 12 deg around the transverse direction, which were simulated with the FE-combined polycrystal plasticity modeling in good agreement with measurements. The simulation work revealed that the shear component introduced by ASR was about the same magnitude as the normal component of the rolling strain tensor.

'Heterogeneous twinning' is defined as plastic deformation due to the formation and progress of twins resulting in surface wrinkles on the deforming part when the initial grain size is relatively large compared to the typical size of the part. In the case of a Twinning Induced Plasticity (TWIP) steel with an initial grain size of ~160. m, the heterogeneous twinning generated visible wrinkles, an orange peel effect, under medium uni-axial strains. The heterogeneous twinning did not occur in the material subjected to high shear strains. The complications resulting from this phenomenon on strain hardening characterization of the TWIP steels using two commonly used mechanical tests, tensile and torsion are discussed along with some experimental aspects of heterogeneous twinning. © 2014.

Purpose: This study used bovine ribs to comparatively assess the deformation, roughness, and mass loss for 3 different types of surface treatments with burs, used in osteotomies, for the installation of osseointegrated implants.Materials and Methods: The study used 25 bovine ribs and 3 types of helical burs (2.0 mm and 3.0 mm) for osteotomies during implant placement (a steel bur [G1], a bur with tungsten carbide film coating in a carbon matrix [G2], and a zirconia bur [G3]), which were subdivided into 5 subgroups: 1, 2, 3, 4, and 5, corresponding to 0, 10, 20, 30, and 40 perforations, respectively. The surface roughness (mean roughness [Ra], partial roughness, and maximum roughness) and mass (in grams) of all the burs were measured, and the burs were analyzed in a scanning electron microscope before and after use. Data were tabulated and statistically analyzed by use of the Kruskal-Wallis test, and when a statistically significant difference was found, the Dunn test was used. Results: There was a loss of mass in all groups (G1, G2, and G3), and this loss was gradual, according to the number of perforations made (1, 2, 3, 4, and 5). However, this difference was not statistically significant (P < .05). Regarding the roughness, G3 presented an increase in Ra, partial roughness, and maximum roughness (P < .05) compared with G2 and an increase in Ra compared with G1. There was no statistically significant difference (P > .05) between G1 and G2. The scanning electron microscopy analysis found areas of deformation in all the 2.0-mm samples, with loss of substrates, and this characteristic was more frequent in G3.Conclusions: The 2.0-mm zirconia burs had a greater loss of substrates and abrasive wear in the cutting area. They also presented an increased roughness when compared with the steel and the tungsten carbide coating film in carbon matrix. There was no statistically significant difference (P < .05) between G1 and G2 in any mechanical test carried out. Let f: M -> M be a fiber-preserving map where S -> M -> B is a bundle and S is a closed surface. We study the abelianized obstruction, which is a cohomology class in dimension 2, to deform f to a fixed point free map by a fiber-preserving homotopy. The vanishing of this obstruction is only a necessary condition in order to have such deformation, but in some cases it is sufficient. We describe this obstruction and we prove that the vanishing of this class is equivalent to the existence of solution of a system of equations over a certain group ring with coefficients given by Fox derivatives.
