Methanol has been shown to promote the hydrocarbon selective catalytic reduction of NO with octane and toluene over 2wt% Ag/AlO catalyst for the first time. In order to understand its role in the reaction fast transient kinetic methods and in situ DRIFTS analysis have been used. The catalytic activity tests showed that the addition of methanol to the HC-SCR reaction results in a significant improvement in the low temperature activity of a Ag/AlO catalyst, despite the fact that methanol on its own is not reactive for the HC-SCR reaction. This promotional effect of methanol is dependent on the concentration of added methanol and is not necessarily associated with a higher concentration of reductant in the SCR feed. The fast transient kinetic analysis has shown that at each temperature the addition of methanol enhances the conversions of both NO and octane and the production of N with high selectivity in comparison with those observed with n-octane or toluene alone. This phenomenon is similar to the effect of H which may be associated with the release of hydrogen and ammonia during the transient switches at 250 and 300°C. Together with the fast transient experiments, the DRIFTS results showed that NCO species are formed when introducing methanol to the n-octane-SCR feed while CN species are removed/consumed from the surfaces of the Ag catalyst. These NCO species formed by adding methanol may play a vital role in promoting the catalytic activity of NO reduction and methanol itself can be an in situ source for hydrogen formation, which subsequently enhances the SCR reaction. © 2014 Elsevier B.V.

While the benefits of renewable energy are well known and used to influence government policy there are a number of problems which arise from having significant quantities of renewable energies on an electricity grid. The most notable problem stems from their intermittent nature which is often out of phase with the demands of the end users. This requires the development of either efficient energy storage systems, e.g. battery technology, compressed air storage etc. or through the creation of demand side management units which can utilise power quickly for manufacturing operations. Herein a system performing the conversion of synthetic biogas to synthesis gas using wind power and an induction heating system is shown. This approach demonstrates the feasibility of such techniques for stabilising the electricity grid while also providing a robust means of energy storage. This exemplar is also applicable to the production of hydrogen from the steam reforming of natural gas.

Gas-to-liquid processes are generally used to convert natural gas or other gaseous hydrocarbons into liquid fuels via an intermediate syngas stream. This includes the production of liquid fuels from biomass-derived sources such as biogas. For example, the dry reforming of methane is done by reacting CH4 and CO2, the two main components of natural biogas, into more valuable products, i.e., CO and H2. Nickel containing perovskite type catalysts can promote this reaction, yielding good conversions and selectivities; however, they are prone to coke laydown under certain operating conditions. We investigated the addition of high oxygen mobility dopants such as CeO2, ZrO2, or YSZ to reduce carbon laydown, particularly using reaction conditions that normally result in rapid coking. While doping with YSZ, YDC, GDC, and SDC did not result in any improvement, we show that a Ni perovskite catalyst (Na0.5La0.5Ni0.3Al0.7O2.5) doped with 80.9 ZrO2 15.2 CeO2 gave the lowest amount of carbon formation at 800 °C and activity was maintained over the operating time.

Nickel catalysts with a load of 5 wt% Ni, supported on pure ZrO(2) and ZrO(2) stabilized with 4, 8 and 14 mol% CaO, were prepared by the polymerization method. The samples were characterized by X-ray diffraction (XRD), temperature-programmed reduction with hydrogen (TPR-H(2)), specific surface area (BET) and impedance spectroscopy (IS) and tested in the carbon dioxide reforming of methane. The XRD patterns showed the presence of the oxide precursor (NiO) and the tetragonal phase of CaO-ZrO(2) solid solutions. According to the TPR-H(2) analysis, the reduction of various NiO species was influenced by the support composition. The electrical properties of the support have a proportional effect on the catalytic activities. Catalytic tests were done at 800 degrees C for 6 h and the composition of the gaseous products and the catalytic conversion depended on the CaO-ZrO(2) solid solution composition and its influence on supported NiO species. A direct relation was found between the variation in the electrical conductivity of the support, the nickel species supported on it and the performance in the catalytic tests. (C) 2009 Elsevier B.V. Nickel catalysts with a load of 5 wt.% Ni, supported on pure ZrO(2) and ZrO(2) stabilized with 4 mol%, 8 mol% and 12 mol% of Y(2)O(3), were prepared by the polymerization method. The samples were characterized by X-ray diffraction (XRD), temperature-programmed reduction with hydrogen (TPR-H(2)), specific surface area (BET) and electronic paramagnetic resonance (EPR) and tested as catalysts for carbon dioxide reforming of methane. The XRD patterns showed the presence of the oxide precursor (NiO) and the tetragonal phase of a Y(2)O(3)-ZrO(2) solid solution. According to the TPR-H(2) analysis, the reduction of various NiO species was influenced by the composition of the support. Catalytic tests were conducted at 800 degrees C for 6 h, and the composition of the gaseous products and the catalytic conversion rate depended on the composition of the Y(2)O(3)-ZrO(2) solid solution and its influence on the supported NiO species. A direct relation was observed between the variation in the support, the nickel species supported on it and the performance in the catalytic tests. (C) 2008 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

The electro-oxidation of methanol at supported tungsten carbide (WC) nanoparticles in sulfuric acid solution was studied using cyclic voltammetry, potentiostatic measurements, and differential electrochemical mass spectroscopy (DEMS). The catalyst was prepared by a sonochemical method and characterized by X-ray diffraction. Over the WC catalyst, the oxidation of methanol (1 M in a sulfuric acid electrolyte) begins at a potential below 0.5 V/RHE during the anodic sweep. During potentiostatic measurements, a maximum current of 0.8 mA mg(-1) was obtained at 0.4 V. Measurements of DEMS showed that the methanol oxidation reaction over tungsten carbide produces CO2 (m/z=44); no methylformate (m/z=60) was detected. These results are discussed in the context of the continued search for alternative materials for the anode catalyst of direct methanol fuel cells.

Catalysts containing NiO/MgO/ZrO(2) mixtures were synthesized by the polymerization method in a single step. They were characterized by X-ray diffraction (XRD), temperature programmed reduction (TPR) and physisorption of N(2) (BET) and then tested in the reforming of a model biogas (1.5CH4:1CO(2)) in the presence of air (1.5CH(4) + 1CO(2) + 0.25O(2)) at 750 degrees C for 6h. It was observed that the catalyst Ni20MZ performed better in catalytic processes than the well known catalysts, Ni/ZrO(2) and Ni/MgO, synthesized under the same conditions. The formation of solid solutions, MgO-ZrO(2) and NiO-MgO, increased the rate of conversion of reactants (CH(4) and CO(2)) into synthesis gas (H(2) + CO). The formation of oxygen vacancies (in samples containing ZrO(2) and MgO) seems to promote removal of the coke deposited on the nickel surface. The values of the H(2)/CO ratio were generally found to be slightly lower than stoichiometric, owing to the reverse water gas shift reaction occurring in parallel. (C) 2011 Elsevier B.V. Supported nickel catalysts of composition Ni/Y(2)O(3)-ZrO(2) were synthesized in one step by the polymerization method and compared with a nickel catalyst prepared by wet impregnation. Stronger interactions were observed in the formed catalysts between NiO species and the oxygen vacancies of the Y(2)O(3)-ZrO(2) in the catalysts made by polymerization, and these were attributed to less agglomeration of the NiO during the synthesis of the catalysts in one step. The dry reforming of ethanol was catalyzed with a maximum CO(2) conversion of 61% on the 5NiYZ catalyst at 800 degrees C, representing a better response than for the catalyst of the same composition prepared by wet impregnation. The effect of variations in the composition for ternary catalysts of the type Pt-x(Ru-Ir)(1-x)/C on the methanol oxidation reaction in acid media for x values of 0.25, 0.50 and 0.75 is reported. The catalysts were prepared by the sol-gel method and characterized by X-ray diffraction (XRD), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), atomic absorption spectroscopy (AAS) and energy dispersive X-ray (EDX) analyses. The nanometric character (2.8-3.2 nm) of the sol-gel deposits was demonstrated by XRD and TEM while EDX and AAS analyses showed that the metallic ratio in the compounds was very near to the expected one. Cyclic voltammograms for methanol oxidation revealed that the reaction onset occur at less positive potentials in all the ternary catalysts tested here when compared to a Pt-0.75-Ru-0.25/C (E-Tek) commercial composite. Steady-state polarization experiments (Tafel plots) showed that the Pt-0.25(Ru-Ir)(0.75)/C catalyst is the more active one for methanol oxidation as revealed by the shift of the reaction onset towards lower potentials. In addition, constant potential electrolyses suggest that the addition of Ru and Ir to Pt decreases the poisoning effect of the strongly adsorbed species generated during methanol oxidation. Consequently, the Pt-0.25 (Ru-Ir)(0.75)/C Composite catalyst is a very promising one for practical applications. (c) 2007 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

One of the key objectives in fuel-cell technology is to improve the performance of the anode catalyst for the alcohol oxidation and reduce Pt loading. Here, we show the use of six different electrocatalysts synthesized by the sol -gel method on carbon powder to promote the oxidation of methanol in acid media. The catalysts Pt-PbO(x) and Pt-(RuO(2)-PbO(x)) with 10% of catalyst load exhibited significantly enhanced catalytic activity toward the methanol oxidation reaction as compared to Pt-(RuO(2))/C and Pt/C electrodes. Cyclic voltammetry studies showed that the electrocatalysts Pt-PbO(x)/C and Pt-(RuO(2)-PbO(x))/C started the oxidation process at extremely low potentials and that they represent a good novelty to oxidize methanol. Furthermore, quasi-stationary polarization experiments and cronoamperometry studies showed the good performance of the Pt-PbO(x), Pt-(RuO(2)-PbO(x))/C and Pt-(RuO(2)-IrO(2))/C catalysts during the oxidation process. Thus, the addition of metallic Pt and PbO(x) onto high-area carbon powder, by the sol -gel route, constitutes an interesting way to prepare anodes with high catalytic activity for further applications in direct methanol fuel cell systems.

The oscillatory electro-oxidation of methanol was studied by means of in situ infrared (IR) spectroscopy in the attenuated total reflection (ATR) configuration using a platinum film on a Si prism as working electrode. The surface-enhanced infrared absorption (SEIRA) effect considerably improves the spectroscopic resolution, allowing at following the coverage of some adsorbing species during the galvanostatic oscillations. Carbon monoxide was the main adsorbed specie observed in the induction period and within the oscillatory regime. The system was investigated at two distinct time-scales and its dynamics characterized accordingly. During the induction period the main transformation observed as the system move through the phase space towards the oscillatory region was the decrease of the coverage of adsorbed carbon, coupled to the increase of the electrode potential. Similar transition characterizes the evolution within the oscillatory region, but at a considerably slower rate. Experiments with higher time resolution revealed that the electrode potential oscillates in-phase with the frequency of the linearly adsorbed CO vibration and that the amount of adsorbed CO oscillates with small amplitude. Adsorbed formate was found to play, if any, a very small role. Results are discussed and compared with other systems. (C) 2010 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

Instead of a time-invariant voltammetric profile, many electrochemical systems display a cycle-dependent current-potential response. This phenomenon has been referred to as complex voltammetric response and it has been observed during the electro-oxidation of several molecules such as methanol, ethanol, propanol and hydrogen. There are currently two explanations for the surface mechanism underlying this behavior. In one scenario, the complex voltammogram would result from the specific kinetic pathway taken during the forward sweep. In the other explanation, the phenomenon is discussed in terms of the interplay among the surface roughening and subsequent relaxation, and the ohmic drop coupled to a negative differential resistance. We report in this paper a nanogravimetric investigation of the complex voltammetric response in the electro-oxidation of methanol on platinum electrode in both acidic and alkaline media. Different periodic patterns composed of intercalated small and large hysteresis cycles were observed as a function of the applied voltage and the series resistance between the working electrode and the potentiostat. Independently, nanogravimetric results indicated no detectable difference in the delta-frequency versus voltage profile between small and large hysteresis cycles. These findings were interpreted as experimental evidence of the secondary, if any, role played by the very electrochemical reaction on the emergence of complex voltammetric response. Various reports concerning catalytic reaction of glycerol for hydrogen production is available. However, economic analyses of this activity are not found yet. The objective of this work is to evaluate the process of hydrogen production via steam reforming of glycerol obtained through transesterification process of bio-oils. The thermochemical process of steam reforming process was determined due to high efficiency, feasibility and lower cost of design, development, operation and maintenance. These bio-oils come from feedstocks largely encountered in Brazil such as soybean, palm, castor bean, peanut and cotton seed as also come from residues such as defective coffee, tallow beef, wastewater (scum) and others. Various findings were obtained such as potential of production of glycerol utilizing residues (considering available amounts in the Brazilian states) and some vegetable feedstocks (considering production of harvested feedstock per hectare). Subsequently, production of hydrogen via steam reforming of generated glycerol, and foreseen electricity production via fuel cells were also determined. An additional estimation was paid for production of H-BIO, an innovative fuel developed by PETROBRAS (Petroleo Brasileiro S.A.), where hydrogen and bio-fuel are utilized and generates propane as co-product. About this work, it was concluded that high amounts of hydrogen and electricity could be produced considering an enormous potential from each cited feedstock being an attractive alternative as distributed electricity source and as an additional source for some activities, inclusively those that produce their own feedstocks such as abattoirs (beef tallow), and wastewater treatment plants. A nickel modified boron doped diamond (Ni-BDD) electrode and nickel foil electrode were used in the determination of methanol in alkaline solutions. The Ni-BDD electrode was electrodeposited from a 1 mM Ni(NO(3))(2) solution (pH 5), followed by repeat cycling in KOH. Subsequent analysis utilised the Ni(OH)(2)/NiOOH redox couple to electrocatalyse the oxidation of methanol. Methanol was determined to limits of 0.3 mM with a sensitivity of 110 nA/mM at the Ni-BDD electrode. The foil electrode was less sensitive achieving a limit of 1.6 mM and sensitivity of 27 nA/mM. SEM analysis of the electrodes found the Ni-BDD to be modified by a quasi-random microparticle array.
