Heck coupling reactions of methyl acrylate with various aryl bromides have been investigated using a Pd/TPP catalyst in toluene under pressurized CO2 conditions up to 13 MPa. Although CO2 is not a reactant, the pressurization of the reaction liquid phase with CO2 has positive and negative impacts on the rate of Heck coupling depending on the structures of the substrates examined. In the case of either 2-bromoacetophenone or 2-bromocinnamate, the conversion has a maximum at a CO2 pressure of about 3 MPa; for the former, it is much larger by a factor of 3 compared with that under ambient pressure. For 2-bromobenzene, in contrast, the conversion is minimized at a similar CO2 pressure, being half compared with that at ambient pressure

Sodium polyacrylate was synthesized with acrylic acid as the monomer, and sodium bisulfate and ammonium persulfate as the initiator, by means of aqueous solution polymerization. The factors influencing the properties of moisture absorption, such as monomer concentration, dosage of initiator, and reaction temperature were systematically investigated. The experimental results indicate that the moisture-absorbing property of this polymer was better than other traditional material, such as silica gel, and molecular sieve. The best reaction condition and formula are based on the orthogonal experiment design. The optimum moisture absorbency of sodium polyacrylate reaches 1.01 g/g. The mathematical correlation of this polymer with various factors and moisture absorbency is obtained based on the multiple regression analysis. The moisture content intuitive analysis table shows that neutralization degree has the most significant influence on moisture absorbency, followed by monomer concentration and reaction temperature, while other factors have less influence.

According to their molecular mass and ESI-MSn data, the trace alkaloid isomers pseudostrychnine and strychnine N-oxide in extracts of the total alkaloids from Strychnos nux-vomical were qualitatively analyzed by electrospray ionization tandem mass spectrometry (ESI-MSn) method after rough silica gel-column chromatographic separation. We also investigated the relationship between their fragmentation mechanism and structures of the two alkaloid isomers. A new method for quickly and highly sensitively analyzing the two alkaloid isomers was proposed.

Quasi-reversible and direct electrochemistry of cytochrome c (cyt. c) has been obtained at a novel electrochemical interface constructed by self-assembling gold nanoparticles (GNPs) onto a three-dimensional silica gel network, without polishing or any modification of the surface. A cleaned gold electrode was first immersed in a hydrolyzed sol of the precursor (3-mercaptopropyl)-trimethoxysilane to assemble three-dimensional silica gel, then the GNPs were chemisorbed onto the thiol groups of the sol-gel network and modified the kinetic barrier of this self-assembled silicate film. Cyclic voltammetry and AC impendance spectroscopy were performed to evaluate electrochemical properties of the as prepared interface. These nanoparticle inhibits the adsorption of cyt. c onto bare electrode and acts as a bridge of electron transfer between protein and electrode.

Rare earth complex Eu(DBM)(3)phen (DBM: dibenzoylmethane, phen: 1.10-phenanthroline) hits been incorporated into unmodified MCM-41 and modified MCM-41s by aminopropyltriethoxysilane (APTES) or N-[(3-triethoxysilyl)propyl]ethylenediamine(TEPED). Thus, the assemblies of unmodified or modified MCM-41s with rare earth (RE) complex have been obtained. XRD spectra. NMR spectra. diffuse reflectance spectra. and the luminescence spectra were used to characterize the pure RE complex and the corresponding assemblies. The assemblies have better luminescence properties under UV irradiation. and their fluorescence lifetimes on the excited state are longer than that of the corresponding pure complex. The possible mechanisms are also discussed in the context.

poly(epsilon-caprolactone) (PCL) and silica (SiO2) organic-inorganic hybrid materials have been synthesized by sol-gel approach and the crystalline behavior of PCL in the silica networks has been investigated by differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) and wide angle X-ray diffraction (WAXD). The degree of PCL crystallinity in the PCL/SiO2 hybrid networks reduces with the increase of SiO2 content. PCL is in an amorphous state when the concentration of PCL is lower than 40wt% in the hybrid materials. The melting points of PCL in the networks are lower than that of pure PCL,but they almost have a same value. WAXD results show that when the PCL weight percentage is higher than 40wt% in the hybrid samples, part of PCL can crysatllize and the PCL crystallites are almost in a same size. That means the crystalline movement of PCL molecular chains is strictly confined by the porous gel. The crystalline PCL in the hybrid samples is relatively free from the composition of the materials, because the crystallization temperature and melting point of PCL of the samples are almost equal, and the crystalline PCL of different samples has the same crystalline structure and the same crystallite sizes L-110 and L-200, that means the crystalline part of PCL in the hybrid samples is unperturbed and the porous silica gel gives enough space for PCL to crystallize into the same crystalline structure and the same size crystallites.

The efficient synthesis of 5-(5-bromovaleramido)-1,10-phenanthroline, 5-(6-bromohexanamido)-1,10-phenanthroline, and 5-(11-bromoundecanamido)-1,10-phenanthroline are described, which reacted with cis-Ru(bpy)(2)Cl-2. 2H(2)O and sodium hexafluorophosphate to form Ru(bpy)(2)[phen-NHCO(CH2)(n)Br](PF6)(2) (n = 4, 5 or 10; phen = 1,10-phenanthroline). The intricate H-1 NMR spectra at low field of these complexes were completely assigned in virtue of H-1-H-1 COSY technique. Cyclic voltammetry was used to study electrochemical behaviours of these complexes, and their luminescent properties were investigated with fluorescent spectra.

Three cellulose derivatives were synthesized and used as chiral stationary phases based on silica gel. The effects of adsorbances on the column numbers and stabilities have been investigated. These stationary phases exhibited high chiral recognition for various racemates. At the same time, the on-line curves of polarimeter were obtained by high performance liquid chromatography with polarimeter as on-line detector.

A sample of the marine brown alga D. divaricata collected off the coast of Yantai (P. R. China) was dried, powdered, and extracted with the mixture of CHCl3 and MeOH (1: 1, v/v). By a combination of silica gel and Sephadex LH-20 column chromatography and preparative TLC, a new cadinane sesquiterpene 1,4-epoxymuurolan-5 beta-ol (1) was isolated from this species. Its structure was established by detailed MS and NMR spectroscopic analysis, as well as comparison with literature data.

The methanol-chloroform extract of the marine red alga, Rhodomela confervoides, was measured for antioxidant activity, using the alpha,alpha-diphenyl-beta-picrylhydrazyl radical-scavenging assay and the beta-carotene-linoleate bleaching assay systems, and compared with those of the positive Controls of butylated hydroxytoluene, gallic acid and ascorbic acid, The active extract was further purified by liquid-liquid partition to afford four fractions, of which the ethyl acetate-soluble (EA) fraction exhibited the strongest antioxidant activity in both assay systems. This fraction was further divided into seven subfractions, designated as EA1-EA7, by silica gel vacuum liquid chromatography. in most cases, EA1 and EM Were found to possess the strongest activity. The total phenolic contents and reducing powers of the extract, fractions, and subfractions were also determined. Significant associations between the antioxidant potency and the total phenolic content, as well as between the antioxidant potency and the reducing power, were found for the tested fractions and subfractions.
