This work describes the synthesis of highly conducting antimony-doped tin oxide (ATO) nanocrystals prepared via a nonaqueous sol–gel route in the size range of 4–6 nm and provides insights into its electrical properties. The antimony composition was varied from 1 to 18 mol% and the lowest resistivity (4.0 × 10−4Ω·cm) was observed at room temperature in the SnO2:8.8 mol% Sb composition. The samples were evaluated by X-ray diffraction, high-resolution transmission electron microscopy, energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy, and scanning electron microscope, and resistivity measurements were taken in the four-probe mode in the temperature range of 13–300 K. The results show highly crystalline nanoparticles in a monodisperse colloidal system, dependence on the shape of ATO nanoparticles as a function of Sb distribution, low resistivity, and semiconductor–metal transition.

Spatial data warehouses (SDWs) allow for spatial analysis together with analytical multidimensional queries over huge volumes of data. The challenge is to retrieve data related to ad hoc spatial query windows according to spatial predicates, avoiding the high cost of joining large tables. Therefore, mechanisms to provide efficient query processing over SDWs are essential. In this paper, we propose two efficient indices for SDW: the SB-index and the HSB-index. The proposed indices share the following characteristics. They enable multidimensional queries with spatial predicate for SDW and also support predefined spatial hierarchies. Furthermore, they compute the spatial predicate and transform it into a conventional one, which can be evaluated together with other conventional predicates by accessing a star-join Bitmap index. While the SB-index has a sequential data structure, the HSB-index uses a hierarchical data structure to enable spatial objects clustering and a specialized buffer-pool to decrease the number of disk accesses. The advantages of the SB-index and the HSB-index over the DBMS resources for SDW indexing (i.e. star-join computation and materialized views) were investigated through performance tests, which issued roll-up operations extended with containment and intersection range queries. The performance results showed that improvements ranged from 68% up to 99% over both the star-join computation and the materialized view. Furthermore, the proposed indices proved to be very compact, adding only less than 1% to the storage requirements. Therefore, both the SB-index and the HSB-index are excellent choices for SDW indexing. Choosing between the SB-index and the HSB-index mainly depends on the query selectivity of spatial predicates. While low query selectivity benefits the HSB-index, the SB-index provides better performance for higher query selectivity.

18 isotype Verbindungen M?Me’???X??? The topic of my thesis was focused on the synthesis of heteroatomic Rh clusters stabilized by carbonyl ligands. I studied the reactivity of [Rh7(CO)16]3- with different Sb3+ and Ge4+ salts, and tried to synthesize new species by changing the reaction conditions. Indeed, in order to obtain new Rh-Sb and Rh-Ge clusters, I employed different stoichiometric ratios, solvents and atmospheres (N2 or CO). As far as the Rh-Sb system is concerned, I successfully synthesized three new compounds through two different reactions, namely [Rh20Sb3(CO)36][NEt4]3, [Rh21Sb2(CO)38][NEt4]5 and [Rh12Sb(CO)24][NEt4]3. At the same time, I investigated the Rh-Ge system and succeeded in the isolation of the new cluster [Rh14Ge2(CO)30][NEt4]2, along with [Rh12SbGePh2(CO)26][NEt4]2, by treating [Rh7(CO)16]3- with both Ge4+ and Sb3+ salts. Each compound has been characterized by IR spectroscopy, ESI-MS spectrometry and single crystal X-ray diffractometry. Finally, I conduced chemical reactivity tests on some of the obtained compounds.

The constitution of the ternary mattes Cu2S PbS Sb2S3 has never been completely investigated nor has there been any attempt to draw the complete ternary diagram. The following work is intended to [be] a contribution towards completion of this diagram by determining the specific gravity of different mattes and by pointing out some which show peculiarities of structure.

Myotonic dystrophy (DM), an autosomal dominant disorder mapping to human chromosome 19q13.3, is the most common neuromuscular disease in human adults.^ Following the identification of the mutation underlying the DM phenotype, an unstable (CTG)$\sb{n}$ trinucleotide repeat in the 3$\prime$ untranslated region (UTR) of a gene encoding a ser/thr protein kinase named DM protein kinase (DMPK), the study was targeted at two questions: (1) the identification of the disease-causing mechanism(s) of the unstable repeat, and at a more basic level, (2) the identification of the origin and the mechanism(s) involved in repeat instability. The first goal was to identify the pathophysiological mechanisms of the (CTG)$\sb{n}$ repeat.^ The normal repeat is transcribed but not translated; therefore, initial studies centered on the effect on RNA transcript levels. The vast majority of DM affecteds are heterozygous for the mutant expansion, so that the normal allele interferes with the analysis of the mutant allele. A quantitative allele-specific RT-PCR procedure was developed and applied to a spectrum of patient tissue samples and cell lines. Equal levels of unprocessed pre-mRNA were determined for the wild type (+) and disease (DM) alleles in skeletal muscle and cell lines of heterozygous DM patients, indicating that any nucleosome binding has no effect at the level of transcriptional initiation and transcription of the mutant DMPK locus. In contrast, processed mRNA levels from the DM allele were reduced relative to the + allele as the size of the expansion increased. The unstable repeat, therefore, impairs post-transcriptional processing of DM allele transcripts. This phenomenon has profound effects on overall DMPK locus steady-state transcript levels in cells missing a wild type allele and does not appear to be mediated by imprinting, decreased mRNA stability, generation of aberrant splice forms, or absence of polyadenylation of the mutant allele.^ In Caucasian DM subjects, the unstable repeat is in complete linkage disequlibrium with a single haplotype composed of nine alleles within and flanking DMPK over a physical distance of 30 kb. A detailed haplotype analysis of the DM region was conducted on a Nigerian (Yoruba) DM family, the only indigenous sub-Saharan DM case reported to date. Each affected member of this family had an expanded (CTG)$\sb{n}$ repeat in one of their DMPK alleles. However, unlike all other DM populations studied thus far, disassociation of the (CTG)$\sb{n}$ repeat expansion from other alleles of the putative predisposing haplotype was found. Thus, the expanded (CTG)$\sb{n}$ repeat in this family was the result of an independent mutational event. Consequently, the origin of DM is unlikely the result of a single mutational event, and the hypothesis that a single ancestral haplotype predisposes to repeat expansion is not compelling. The development of strategies and policies aiming at the reduction of environmental exposure to air pollution requires the assessment of historical emissions. Although anthropogenic emissions from the extended territory of the Soviet Union (SU) considerably influenced concentrations of heavy metals in the Northern Hemisphere, Pb is the only metal with long-term historical emission estimates for this region available, whereas for selected other metals only single values exist. Here we present the first study assessing long-term Cd, Cu, Sb, and Zn emissions in the SU during the period 1935–1991 based on ice-core concentration records from Belukha glacier in the Siberian Altai and emission data from 12 regions in the SU for the year 1980. We show that Zn primarily emitted from the Zn production in Ust-Kamenogorsk (East Kazakhstan) dominated the SU heavy metal emission. Cd, Sb, Zn (Cu) emissions increased between 1935 and the 1970s (1980s) due to expanded non-ferrous metal production. Emissions of the four metals in the beginning of the 1990s were as low as in the 1950s, which we attribute to the economic downturn in industry, changes in technology for an increasing metal recovery from ores, the replacement of coal and oil by gas, and air pollution control.

The fine balance between proliferation and apoptosis plays a primary role in carcinogenesis. Proto-oncogenes that induce both proliferation and apoptosis provide a powerful inbuilt system to inhibit clonal expansion of cells with high proliferation rates. This provides a restraint to the development of neoplasms. C-myc expressing cells undergo apoptosis in low serum by an unknown mechanism. Several lines of evidence suggested that c-myc induces apoptosis by a transcriptional mechanism. However, the target genes of this program have not been fully defined. Protein synthesis inhibitors induce apoptosis in c-myc over-expressing cells at high serum levels suggesting that inhibition of synthesis of a survival factor may induce apoptosis. We show that the expression of c-myc directly correlates with an increase in the level of a survival protein, bcl-$\rm x\sb{L},$ and a decrease in the pro-apoptotic protein, bax, at both the protein and mRNA level. Furthermore, a significant decrease of the bcl-$\rm x\sb{L}$ protein levels is observed under low serum conditions. In order to investigate the mechanism of regulation of bcl-$\rm x\sb{L}$ and bax by c-myc, the bcl-x and bax promoters were cloned, sequenced and shown to contain c-myc binding sites. The chloramephenicol acetyl transferase (CAT) reporter assay was used to demonstrate activation of the bcl-x promoter by increasing levels of c-myc when co-transfected in COS cells. The bax promoter was also shown to be transrepressed in c-myc expressing cells. The role of bcl-$\rm x\sb{L}$ in apoptosis regulation in c-myc cell lines in normal and low serum was then investigated. Cells lines expressing c-myc and bcl-$\rm x\sb{L}$ were generated and were shown to be resistant to apoptosis induction in low serum. Furthermore, cell lines expressing c-myc, anti-sense bcl-$\rm x\sb{L}$ and $\beta$-galactosidase demonstrated significantly enhanced rates of apoptosis in high serum compared to c-myc Rat 1a cells. These findings suggest that c-myc activates a survival program involving bcl-$\rm x\sb{L}$ upregulation and bax downregulation. However, this survival signal is reduced under low serum conditions by the relative downregulation of bcl-$\rm x\sb{L}$ allowing for apoptosis to proceed. These data also directly demonstrates that downregulation in the level of bcl-$\rm x\sb{L}$ associated with low serum conditions is a critical determinant of c-myc induced apoptosis. ^
