Patients with Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease may have muscle dysfunction, which ultimately reduce the functional capacity. Neuromuscular electrical stimulation (NMES) is a technique that can be effective in these patients, and implies low overload to the cardiorespiratory system. The aim of this study was to investigate the effects of NMES on muscle strength and cardiorespiratory fitness in COPD patients. Five patients (2 men, 3 women) were evaluated, with a mean age of 70.40 ± 6.61 years, and underwent anamnesis, anthropometric measurements, spirometry, pulmonary function, cardiopulmonary functional capacity and muscle strength in the lower limbs. After the evaluations, the patients were enrolled in a program of electrical stimulation of the quadriceps muscles, performed 3 times per week for 5 weeks. Each session lasted for 30 minutes, being reassessed at the end of the 15 sessions. Statistically significant response is observed to gain strength in lower limb (p = 0.005), but no significant responses were observed for the distance in six minute walking test before and after the test protocol for electrical stimulation. Showing that with NMES was located just gain muscle strength without effects on functional capacity, and there are few studies that investigate these effects, so further studies are needed to investigate this relationship.

Inflammation is an immune complex-related tissue damage and / or cell caused by chemical, physical, immunological or microbial. The inflammatory process involves a complex cascade of biochemical and cellular events, including awareness and receptor activation, lysis and tissue repair. In general, tissue damage trigger a local inflammatory response by recruiting leukocytes, which release inflammatory mediators. These substances are able to sensitize nociceptors. After synaptic transmission and signal modulation by nociceptive sensory neurons, these signals are perceived as pain. Pain is an experience that involves multiple factors. The route of the supraspinal pain control originates in many brain regions, such as substance periarquedutal gray (PAG), median raphe nucleus and rostral ventromedial medulla (RVM) and have a critical role in determining the chronic and acute pain. Anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) are used to control inflammation, which inhibit the inflammatory mediators, but can cause side effects such as stomach ulcers and cardiovascular damage. An alternative for the treatment of pain and inflammation is the use of plant species. The genus Eugenia belongs to the family Myrtaceae, one of the largest botanical families of expression in the Brazilian ecosystems. From the pharmacological point of view, studies of similar species crude extracts showed the presence of anti-inflammatory, analgesic, antifungal, hypotensive, antidiabetic and antioxidant activity of some species. As a class of importance in therapeutic phytochemical, the flavonoids has represented an important group with significant anti-inflammatory and gastroprotective, and are present in a significant way in the chemical composition of genus Eugenia. The project´s overall objective is to evaluate the antinociceptive and anti-inflammatory activities from hydroalcoholic extract of leaves of Eugenia punicifolia (EHEP). In this work we performed acute toxicity ...

Pancreatitis is a predominantly disease of the exocrine pancreas, which occurs commonly in dogs. Acute pandreatitis is reversible, with the removal of the primary cause, whereas chronic pancreatitits is irreversible, with histopathological changes, such as atrophy and fibosis that occurs from persistent inflammation. In dogs, clinicl signs ranging among abdominal pain and anorexia until potential insufficiency of various organs and Disseminated Intravascular Coagulation. In general, dogs with acute illness presents vomiting, anorexia, abdominal pain and several degrees of dehydration, collapse and shock. The caim of this monograph is evaluate ultrassound changes in dogs with panceatitis. Ultrassound is a valuable technique to evaluate exocrine pancreas, with association with another diagnostic modalities will be able to increase the preciosion of the diagnosis

The presence of Candida and the production of histolytic enzyms by the isolated samples were observed in the saliva and gingival fluid in adult chronic periodontitis patients and health ones. It was also verified the quantity of antibodies against Candida (IgG, IgA, IgM and IgE) in the saliva and sera of the same patients through ELISA technique. Yeasts of the genus Candida mainly C. albicans were isolated from saliva in higher number from adult chronic periodontitis patients in relation to the controle with statistically significant difference. The meon of the quantity of isolated Candida (UFC/ml) were higher for periodontítis patients, although this difference was not statistically significative. Samples of Candida isolated from both groups produced hystolytic enzymes (hyaluronidase, condroitin sulfatase, proteinase, phospholipase) that are considered patogenicity factors in periodontol diseases. Only one sample of each group (C albicans) didn't produce the four analysed enzymes. The antibodies levels against Candida (IgG, IgM and IgA in saliva, IgG and IgA in sera and IgG and IgM in gingival Fluid), were statistically higher in adult chronic periodontitis patients in relation to periodontically health individuals, suggesting humoral immune response by periodontitis patients to the yeasts of the genus Candida
