Organic light emitting diodes using a mixed layer of electron acceptor 3, 4, 9, 10 perylenetetracarboxylic dianhydride and electron donor copper phthalocyanine (PTCDA:CuPc) on indium tin oxide (ITO) anodes were fabricated. The device properties were found to be strongly dependent on the thickness of the PTCDA:CuPc film: both the power efficiency and the driving voltage of the device were optimized with a thickness of PTCDA:CuPc ranging from 10 to 20 nm. As compared to the conventional ITO/CuPc hole injection structure, the ITO/PTCDA:CuPc hole injection structure could remarkably enhance both the luminance and the power efficiencies of devices. A mechanism of static-induced, very efficient hole-electron pairs generation in mixed PTCDA:CuPc films was proposed to explain the experimental phenomena. The structural and optical properties of PTCDA:CuPc film were examined as well. (c) 2007 American Institute of Physics.

Silicon nanocrystals in SiO2 matrix are fabricated by plasma enhanced chemical vapor deposition followed by thermal annealing. The structure and photoluminescence (PL) of the resulting films is investigated as a function of deposition temperature. Drastic improvement of PL efficiency up to 12% is achieved when the deposition temperature is reduced from 250 degreesC to room temperature. Low-temperature deposition is found to result in a high quality final structure of the films in which the silicon nanocrystals are nearly strain-free, and the Si/SiO2 interface sharp. The demonstration of the superior structural and optical properties of the films represents an important step towards the development of silicon-based light emitters. Nanocrystalline silicon (nc-Si) embedded SiO2 matrix has been formed by annealing the SiOx films fabricated by plasma-enhanced chemical vapor deposition (PECVD) technique. Absorption coefficient and photoluminescence of the films have been measured at room temperature. The experimental results show that there is an "aUrbach-like" b exponential absorption in the spectral range of 2.0-3.0 eV. The relationship of (alpha hv)(1/2) proportional to(hv - E-g) demonstrates that the luminescent nc-Si have an indirect band structure. The existence of Stokes shift between photoluminescence and absorption edge indicates that radiative combination can take place not only between electron states and hole states but also between shallow trap states of electrons and holes. We have investigated the dependence on hydrostatic pressure of the photoluminescence of an InAs submonolayer embedded in a GaAs matrix at 15 K and for pressure up to 8 GPa. Strong InAs-related emissions are observed in all three samples at ambient pressure. The temperature dependence of the emission intensity for these Peaks can be well characterized by the thermal activation of excitons from the InAs layer to the GaAs matrix. With increasing pressure, the InAs-related peaks shift to. higher energies. The pressure coefficients of these peaks are very close to that of the free exciton in bulk GaAs. Some weak peaks observed at pressures above 4.2 GPa are attributed to indirect transitions involving X states in the InAs layer. These results are similar to the pressure behaviour observed in the InAs/GaAs monolayer structures. A group of new lines has been observed in the spectra when pressure is increased beyond 2.5 GPa, which is attributed to the N isoelectronic traps in the GaAs matrix.

InAs quantum dots grown on InAlAs lattice-matched to (0 0 1) InP substrates by molecular beam epitaxy are investigated by double-crystal X-ray diffraction, photoluminescence and transmission electron microscopy. The growth process is found to follow the Stranski-Krastanow growth mode. The islands formation is confirmed by the TEM measurements. Strong radiative recombination from the quantum dots and the wetting layer is observed, with room temperature PL emission in the 1.2-1.7 mu m region, demonstrating the potential of the InAs/InAlAs QDs for optoelectronic device applications. InAs self-organized quantum dots in InAlAs matrix lattice-matched to exactly oriented (001) InP substrates were grown by solid source molecular beam epitaxy (MBE) using the Stranski-Krastanow mode. Preliminary characterizations have been performed using photoluminescence and transmission electron microscopy. The geometrical arrangement of the quantum dots is found to be strongly dependent on the amount of coverage. At low deposition thickness. InAs QDs are arranged in chains along [1(1) over bar0$] directions. Luminescence from the quantum dots and the wetting layer consisting of quantum wells with well widths of 1, 2, and 3 monolayers is observed. (C) 1998 American Institute of Physics.

The interface state recombination effect from the quantum confinement effect in PL signals from the SRO material system was studied. The results show that the larger the size of Si NCs, the more beneficial for the interface state recombination process to surpass the quantum confinement process, in support of Qin's model.

In this study, silicon nanocrystals embedded in SiO2 matrix were formed by conventional plasma enhanced chemical vapor deposition (PECVD) followed by high temperature annealing. The formation of silicon nanocrystals (nc-Si), their optical and micro-structural properties were studied using various experimental techniques, including Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, micro-Raman spectra, high resolution transmission electron microscopy and x-ray photoelectron spectroscopy. Very strong red light emission from silicon nanocrystals at room temperature (RT) was observed. It was found that there is a strong correlation between the PL intensity and the substrate temperature, the oxygen content and the annealing temperature. When the substrate temperature decreases from 250degreesC to RT, the PL intensity increases by two orders of magnitude.

The influence of dielectric surface energy on the initial nucleation and the growth of pentacene films as well as the electrical properties of the pentacene-based field-effect transistors are investigated. We have examined a range of organic and inorganic dielectrics with different surface energies, such as polycarbonate/SiO2, polystyrene/SiO2, and PMMA/SiO2 bi-layered dielectrics and also the bare SiO2 dielectric. Atomic force microscopy measurements of sub-monolayer and thick pentacene films indicated that the growth of pentacene film was in Stranski-Kranstanow growth mode on all the dielectrics. However, the initial nucleation density and the size of the first-layered pentacene islands deposited on different dielectrics are drastically influenced by the dielectric surface energy. With the increasing of the surface energy, the nucleation density increased and thus the average size of pentacene islands for the first mono-layer deposition decreased. The performance of fabricated pentacene-based thin film transistors was found to be highly related to nucleation density and the island size of deposited Pentacene film, and it had no relationship to the final particle size of the thick pentacene film. The field effect mobility of the thin film transistor could be achieved as high as 1.38 cm(2)/Vs with on/off ratio over 3 x 10(7) on the PS/SiO2 where the lowest surface energy existed among all the dielectrics. For comparison, the values of mobility and on/off ratio were 0.42 cm(2)/Vs and 1 x 10(6) for thin film transistor deposited directly on bare SiO2 having the highest surface energy.
Broadband short-range surface plasmon structures for absorption enhancement in organic photovoltaics
Resumo:
We theoretically demonstrate a polarization-independent nanopatterned ultra-thin metallic structure supporting short-range surface plasmon polariton (SRSPP) modes to improve the performance of organic solar cells. The physical mechanism and the mode distribution of the SRSPP excited in the cell device were analyzed, and reveal that the SRSPP-assisted broadband absorption enhancement peak could be tuned by tailoring the parameters of the nanopatterned metallic structure. Three-dimensional finite-difference time domain calculations show that this plasmonic structure can enhance the optical absorption of polymer-based photovoltaics by 39% to 112%, depending on the nature of the active layer (corresponding to an enhancement in short-circuit current density by 47% to 130%). These results are promising for the design of organic photovoltaics with enhanced performance.

It has been experimentally found that molybdenum oxide (MoO3) as the interfacial modification layer on indium-tin-oxide (ITO) in organic light-emitting diodes (OLEDs) significantly improves the efficiency and lifetime. In this paper, the role of MoO3 and MoO3 doped N,N '-di(naphthalene-1-yl)-N,N '-diphenyl-benzidine (NPB) as the interface modification layer on ITO in improvement of the efficiency and stability of OLEDs is investigated in detail by atomic force microscopy (AFM), polarized optical microscopy, transmission spectra, ultraviolet photoemission spectroscopy (UPS) and X-ray photoemission spectroscopy (XPS).

Negative differential resistance (NDR) and memory phenomenon have been realized in current-voltage (I-V) characteristics of indium tin oxide/tris(8-hydroxyquinoline) aluminum/aluminum devices. The I-V curves have been divided into three operational regions that are associated with different working regimes of the devices: (i) bistable region, (ii) NDR region, and (iii) monotonic region. The bistable region disappeared after a couple of voltage sweeps from zero to a positive voltage. The bistable nature can be reinstated by applying a suitable negative voltage.
