The clay mineral assemblages of upper Eocene to lower Miocene sediments recovered at the CIROS-1 and MSSTS-1 drill sites on the McMurdo Sound shelf, Antarctica, were analyzed in order to reconstruct the Cenozoic Antarctic paleoclimate and ice dynamics. The assemblages are dominated by smectite and illite, with minor amounts of chlorite and kaolinite. The highest smectite amounts and best smectite crystallinities occur in the upper Eocene part of CIROS-1, below 425-445 mbsf. They indicate that during their deposition, chemical weathering conditions prevailed on the nearby continent. Large parts of East Antarctica were probably ice-free at that time, but some glaciers reached the sea and contributed to the glaciomarine sedimentation. In contrast, only minor total amounts of smectite are present in Oligocene and younger sediments due to the shift to mainly physical weathering on an ice-covered Antarctic continent. However, relative smectite percentages rise to more than 60% during two late Oligocene intervals (ca. 27.5-26.2 and 25.0-24.5 Ma) and during one early Miocene interval starting at ca. 23.3 Ma. These intervals are characterized by ice masses coming probably from the south, where volcanic rocks acted as a source, as also indicated by the composition of the sand and gravel fractions. During the other intervals, the ice came from the west, where the physical erosion of basement rocks and sedimentary rocks of the Beacon Supergroup in the Transantarctic Mountains provided high illite concentrations. Because the two drill sites are only 4 km apart, their clay mineral records can be correlated. This led to a new interpretation of the Oligocene paleomagnetic data of the MSSTS-1 site and to a more detailed lithostratigraphic correlation of the Miocene parts of the cores.

This thesis focuses on tectonic geomorphology and the response of the Ken River catchment to postulated tectonic forcing along a NE-striking monocline fold in the Panna region, Madhya Pradesh, India. Peninsular India is underlain by three northeast-trending paleotopographic ridges of Precambrian Indian basement, bounded by crustal-scale faults. Of particular interest is the Pokhara lineament, a crustal scale fault that defines the eastern edge of the Faizabad ridge, a paleotopographic high cored by the Archean Bundelkhand craton. The Pokhara lineament coincides with the monocline structure developed in the Proterozoic Vindhyan Supergroup rocks along the Bundelkhand cratonic margin. A peculiar, deeply incised meander-like feature, preserved along the Ken River where it flows through the monocline, may be intimately related to the tectonic regime of this system. This thesis examines 41 longitudinal stream profiles across the length of the monocline structure to identify any tectonic signals generated from recent surface uplift above the Pokhara lineament. It also investigates the evolution of the Ken River catchment in response to the generation of the monocline fold. Digital Elevation Models (DEM) from Advanced Spaceborne Thermal Emission and Reflection Radiometer (ASTER) were used to delineate a series of tributary watersheds and extract individual stream profiles which were imported into MATLAB for analysis. Regression limits were chosen to define distinct channel segments, and knickpoints were defined at breaks between channel segments where there was a discrete change in the steepness of the channel profile. The longitudinal channel profiles exhibit the characteristics of a fluvial system in transient state. There is a significant downstream increase in normalized steepness index in the channel profiles, as well as a general increase in concavity downstream, with some channels exhibiting convex, over-steepened segments. Normalized steepness indices and uppermost knickpoint elevations are on average much higher in streams along the southwest segment of the monocline compared to streams along the northeast segment. Most channel profiles have two to three knickpoints, predominantly exhibiting slope-break morphology. These data have important implications for recent surface uplift above the Pokhara lineament. Furthermore, geomorphic features preserved along the Ken River suggest that it is an antecedent river. The incised meander-like feature appears to be the abandoned river valley of a former Ken River course that was captured during the evolution of the landscape by what is the present day Ken River.

The mineralogy of the lower Oligocene to Quaternary sediments of core CRP-2/2A drilled on the continental shelf of McMurdo Sound in Ross Sea, Antarctica, was examined by the X-ray diffraction method. Quartz, plagioclase feldspar and K-feldspar are the most important non-clay minerals. Pyroxene and amphibole occur in minor amounts throughout the core. The composition of the sediments points to an origin in the Transantarctic Mountains for the majority of the detrital components. There, the plutonic and metamorphic rocks of the basement, the sediments of the Beacon Supergroup and the volcanic rocks of the Ferrar Group could serve as possible source lithologies. The distribution of the detrital minerals reflects a long-term history of successive erosion and valley incision. During the deposition of the lower part of the core, the detrital minerals were probably mainly derived from the sediments of the Beacon Supergroup, as indicated by the high quartz but relatively low feldspar abundances. In the upper c. 350 m of the core, the influence of a source in the basement became stronger and results in lower quartz contents but increasing abundance of feldspar. Some diagenetic alteration of the sediments is indicated by the occurrence of zeolites below c. 320 mbsf and of opal-CT above c. 320 mbsf.

We present here a new geological map of Potter Peninsula (King George Island, South Shetland Islands). Like on adjacent Barton Peninsula, the morphology on Potter Peninsula is predominantly characterized by a glacial landscape with abrasion platforms offshore, in parts steep cliffs along the coast, and a rather smooth, hilly countryside in the interior. Potter Peninsula forms part of the downthrown Warszawa Block. The volcanic sequence cropping out here belongs to the King George Island Supergroup, with an observed local minimum thickness of approx. 90 m (Kraus 2005). The most prominent morphological feature is Three Brothers Hill (196 m), a well known andesitic plug showing conspicuous columnar jointing. It marks the final stage of activity of a Paleogene volcano, whose eruption products (lava flows and pyroclastic rocks), together with hypabyssal intrusions related to the volcanism, make up most of the lithology observed on Potter Peninsula (Kraus 2005). The Three Brothers Hill volcanic complex is eroded down to its deepest levels. Thus, the stratigraphically deepest units from the initial phase of volcanic activity are cropping out in some parts (Kraus & del Valle, in Wienke et al. 2008). The lithology on Potter Peninsula comprises lava flows (~50%), pyroclastic rocks (ash-fallout, pyroclastic flow deposits, volcanic breccia and agglomerates, ~30%) and hypabyssal intrusions (dykes, sills and small subvolcanic intrusive bodies, ~20%). 40Ar/39Ar datings carried out on magmatic dykes from Potter Peninsula indicate a short, but intense intrusive event during the Lutetian (Kraus et al. 2007).

One of the objectives of the Cape Roberts Project is to study the tectonic history of the western Ross Sea region. Timing of the uplift of the Transantarctic Mountains, which are adjacent to the drillsite, will be a component of the tectonic studies (International Steering Committee, 1994; Cale Roberts Science Team, 1998a). The study of the clast samples from the core will be an important means of providing insight into the timing of uplift of the Transantarctic Mountains. Tholeiitic igneous rocks of the Jurassic (180 Ma) Ferrar large igneous province (FLIP) are widespreaded along the Transantarctic Mountains and have the potential to provide distinct indicators of erosion during uplift of the mountains. In the Transantarctic Mountains adjacent to the Cape Roberts drill site the FLIP is represented by lavas and pyroclastic of the Kirkpatrick basalts and by thick Ferrar dolerite sills which intrude the Beacon Supergroup sediments and, occasionally, the granitic basement rocks. In the Prince Albert Mountains, the youngest Kirkpatrick basalt lava is over 150 m thick, and has a very distinct high TiO2 chemical composition which is unique in the FLIP. If such rocks can be identified in the core they may provide precise timing of the initiation of uplift and denudation of the Transantarctic Mountains. Here we report on an examination of 20 Ferrar dolerite clasts. This brief report is intended as a pilot study to the examination of FLIP clasts from older drillcore.

The mineralogy of the lower Miocene and Quaternary sediments of the drillcore CRP-1 (McMurdo Sound, Ross Sea, Antarctica) has been analysed using the X-ray diffraction method. There, the plutonic and metamorphic rocks of the basement, the sediments of the Beacon Supergroup and the volcanic rocks of the Ferrar Dolerite could serve as possible source lithologies. The quartz abundance is strongly linked to the gain size of the sediments with maxima correlating with coarse gain sizes. The downcore distribution of the other detrital minerals is relatively invariable, and does not indicate a major change in the source area during the time represented by the CRP-1 sediments. Some diagenetic alteration of the sediments is indicated by the occurrence of minor amounts of opal-CT and by some clinoptilolite below110 m depth.

Detrital modes determined on 68 sandstone samples from CRP-3 drillcore indicate a continuation of the dynamic history of uplift-related erosion and unroofing previously documented in CRP-1 and CRP-2/2A. The source area is identified very strongly with the Transantarctic Mountains (TAM) Dry Valleys block in southern Victoria Land. Initial unroofing of the TAM comprised removal of much of a former capping sequence of Jurassic Kirkpatrick basalts, which preceded the formation of the Victoria Land Basin. Erosion of Beacon Supergroup outcrops took place during progressive uplift of the TAM in the Oligocene. Earliest CRP-3 Oligocene samples above 788 metres below the sea floor (mbsf) were sourced overwhelmingly in Beacon Supergroup strata, including a recognisable contribution from Triassic volcanogenic Lashly Formation sandstones (uppermost Victoria Group). Moving up-section, by 500 mbsf, the CRP-3 samples are depauperate quartz arenites dominantly derived from the quartzose Devonian Taylor Group. Between c. 500 and 450 mbsf, the modal parameters show a distinctive change indicating that small outcrops of basement granitoids and metamorphic rocks were also being eroded along with the remaining Beacon (mainly Taylor Group) sequence. Apart from enigmatic fluctuations in modal indices above 450 mbsf, similar to those displayed by samples in CRP-2/2A, the CRP-3 modes are essentially constant (within a broad data scatter) to the top of CRP-3. The proportion of exposed basement outcrop remained at < 20 %, indicating negligible uplift (i.e. relative stability) throughout that period.

We present the proceedings from a two-day workshop held at Swinburne University on 2005 May 24-25. The workshop participants highlighted current Australian research on both theoretical and observational aspects of galaxy groups. These proceedings include short one-page summaries of a number of the talks presented at the workshop. The talks presented ranged from reconciling N-body simulations with observations, to the Hi content of galaxies in groups and the existence of 'dark galaxies'. The formation and existence of ultra-compact dwarfs in groups, and a new supergroup in Eridanus were also discussed.

Shale-normalised rare earth element and yttrium (REE + Y) patterns for siderite-jasper couples in a banded iron formation of the 3.45 Ga Panorama Formation, Warrawoona Group, eastern Pilbara Craton, display distinct positive Y and Eu anomalies and weak positive La and Gd anomalies, combined with depleted light REE relative to middle and heavy REE. Ambient seawater and hydrothermal fluids are identified as major sources of REE + Y for the BIF. In the case of siderites, strong correlations between incompatible trace elements and trace element ratios diagnostic of seawater indicate variable input from a terrigenous source (e.g. volcanic ash). We propose a volcanic caldera setting as a likely depositional environment where jasper and siderite precipitated as alternating bands in response to episodic changes in ambient water chemistry. The episodicity was either driven by fluctuations in the intensity of hydrothermal activity or changes in magma chamber activity, which in turn controlled relative sea level. In this context, precipitation of jasper probably reflects background conditions during which seawater was saturated in silica due to evaporative conditions, while siderites were deposited most likely during intermittent periods of enhanced volcanic activity when seawater was more acidic due to the release of exhalative phases (e.g. CO2). © 2005 Elsevier B.V. The strong couplings between different degrees of freedom are believed to be responsible for novel and complex phenomena discovered in transition metal oxides (TMOs). The physical complexity is directly responsible for their tunability. Creating surfaces/interfaces add an additional ' man-made' twist, approaching the quantum phenomena of correlated materials. ^ The dissertation focused on the structural and electronic properties in proximity of surface of three prototype TMO compounds by using three complementary techniques: scanning tunneling microscopy, angle-resolved photoelectron spectroscopy and low energy electron diffraction, particularly emphasized the effects of broken symmetry and imperfections like defects on the coupling between charge and lattice degrees of freedom. ^ Ca1.5Sr0.5RuO4 is a layered ruthenate with square lattice and at the boundary of magnetic/orbital instability in Ca2-xSrxRuO4. That the substitution of Sr 2+ with Ca2+ causing RuO6 rotation narrows the dxy band width and changes the Fermi surface topology. Particularly, the γ(dxy) Fermi surface sheet exhibited hole-like in Ca1.5Sr0.5RuO4 in contrast to electron-like in Sr2RuO4, showing a strong charge-lattice coupling. ^ Na0.75CoO2 is a layered cobaltite with triangular lattice exhibiting extraordinary thermoelectric properties. The well-ordered CoO2-terminated surface with random Na distribution was observed. However, lattice constants of the surface are smaller than that in bulk. The surface density of states (DOS) showed strong temperature dependence. Especially, an unusual shift of the minimum DOS occurs below 230 K, clearly indicating a local charging effect on the surface. ^ Cd2Re2O7 is the first known pyrochlore oxide superconductor (Tc ∼ 1K). It exhibited an unusual second-order phase transition occurring at TS1 = 200 K and a controversial first-order transition at TS2 = 120 K. While bulk properties display large anomalies at TS1 but rather subtle and sample-dependent changes at TS2, the surface DOS near the EF show no change at T s1 but a substantial increase below TS2---a complete reversal as the signature for the transitions. We argued that crystal imperfections, mainly defects, which were considerably enhanced at the surface, resulted in the transition at TS2. ^

Geometric frustration occurs in the rare earth pyrochlores due to magnetic rare earth ions occupying the vertices of the network of corner-sharing tetrahedra. In this research, we have two parts. In the first one we study the phase transition to the magnetically ordered state at low temperature in the pyrochlore Er₂Ti₂O₇. The molecular field method was used to solve this problem. In the second part, we analyse the crystal electric field Hamiltonian for the rare earth sites. The rather large degeneracy of the angular momentum J of the rare earth ion is lifted by the crystal electric field due to the neighboring ions in the crystal. By rewriting the Stevens operators in the crystal electric field Hamiltonian ᴴCEF in terms of charge quadruple operators, we can identify unstable order parameters in ᴴCEF . These may be related to lattice instabilities in Tb₂Ti₂O₇.

Aurivillius phase thin films of Bi5Ti3(FexMn1−x)O15 with x = 1 (Bi5Ti3FeO15) and 0.7 (Bi5Ti3Fe0.7Mn0.3O15) on SiO2-Si(100) and Pt/Ti/SiO2-Si substrates were fabricated by chemical solution deposition. The method was optimized in order to suppress formation of pyrochlore phase Bi2Ti2O7 and improve crystallinity. The structuralproperties of the films were examined by x-ray diffraction, scanning electron microscopy, and atomic force microscopy. Optimum crystallinity and pyrochlore phase suppression was achieved by the addition of 15 to 25 mol. % excess bismuth to the sols. Based on this study, 17.5 mol. % excess bismuth was used in the preparation of Bi2Ti2O7-free films of Bi5Ti3FeO15 on SrTiO3(100) and NdGaO3(001) substrates, confirming the suppression of pyrochlore phase using this excess of bismuth. Thirty percent of the Fe3+ ions in Bi5Ti3FeO15 was substituted with Mn3+ ions to form Bi2Ti2O7-free thin films of Bi5Ti3Fe0.7Mn0.3O15 on Pt/Ti/SiO2-Si, SiO2-Si(100), SrTiO3(100), and NdGaO3(001) substrates. Bi5Ti3FeO15 and Bi5Ti3Fe0.7Mn0.3O15thin films on Pt/Ti/SiO2-Si and SiO2-Si(100) substrates were achieved with a higher degree of a-axis orientation compared with the films on SrTiO3(100) and NdGaO3(001) substrates. Room temperature electromechanical and magnetic properties of the thin films were investigated in order to assess the potential of these materials for piezoelectric,ferroelectric, and multiferroic applications. Vertical piezoresponse force microscopy measurements of the films demonstrate that Bi5Ti3FeO15 and Bi5Ti3Fe0.7Mn0.3O15thin films are piezoelectric at room temperature. Room temperature switching spectroscopy-piezoresponse force microscopy measurements in the presence and absence of an applied bias demonstrate local ferroelectric switching behaviour (180°) in the films. Superconducting quantum interference device magnetometry measurements do not show any room temperature ferromagnetic hysteresis down to an upper detection limit of 2.53 × 10−3 emu; and it is concluded, therefore, that such films are not mutiferroic at room temperature. Piezoresponse force microscopy lithography images of Bi5Ti3Fe0.7Mn0.3O15thin films are presented.

Global niobium production is presently dominated by three operations, Araxá and Catalão (Brazil), and Niobec (Canada). Although Brazil accounts for over 90% of the world’s niobium production, a number of high grade niobium deposits exist worldwide. The advancement of these deposits depends largely on the development of operable beneficiation flowsheets. Pyrochlore, as the primary niobium mineral, is typically upgraded by flotation with amine collectors at acidic pH following a complicated flowsheet with significant losses of niobium. This research compares the typical two stage flotation flowsheet to a direct flotation process (i.e. elimination of gangue pre-flotation) with the objective of circuit simplification. In addition, the use of a chelating reagent (benzohydroxamic acid, BHA) was studied as an alternative collector for fine grained, highly disseminated pyrochlore. For the amine based reagent system, results showed that while comparable at the laboratory scale, when scaled up to the pilot level the direct flotation process suffered from circuit instability because of high quantities of dissolved calcium in the process water due to stream recirculation and fine calcite dissolution, which ultimately depressed pyrochlore. This scale up issue was not observed in pilot plant operation of the two stage flotation process as a portion of the highly reactive carbonate minerals was removed prior to acid addition. A statistical model was developed for batch flotation using BHA on carbonatite ore (0.25% Nb2O5) that could not be effectively upgraded using the conventional amine reagent scheme. Results showed that it was possible to produce a concentrate containing 1.54% Nb2O5 with 93% Nb recovery in ~15% of the original mass. Fundamental studies undertaken included FT-IR and XPS, which showed the adsorption of both the protonized amine and the neutral amine onto the surface of the pyrochlore (possibly at niobium sites as indicated by detected shifts in the Nb3d binding energy). The results suggest that the preferential flotation of pyrochlore over quartz with amines at low pH levels can be attributed to a difference in critical hemimicelle concentration (CHC) values for the two minerals. BHA was found to be absorbed on pyrochlore surfaces by a similar mechanism to alkyl hydroxamic acid. It is hoped that this work will assist in improving operability of existing pyrochlore flotation circuits and help promote the development of niobium deposits globally. Future studies should focus on investigation into specific gangue mineral depressants and inadvertent activation phenomenon related to BHA flotation of gangue minerals.

L’usine Niobec traite un minerai de pyrochlore porteur de niobium pour produire le ferro-niobium utilisé pour la fabrication d’acier. L’usine récupère environ 60% des minéraux de niobium. Les rejets contiennent du niobium et d’autres espèces minérales potentiellement valorisables. Les travaux présentés dans ce mémoire visent à identifier les espèces pouvant être valorisées dans les rejets de Niobec dont les plus prometteurs sont les éléments de terres rares, les minéraux de niobium et l’apatite. Dans le but de concentrer l’apatite des rejets de l’usine, une analyse chimique des rejets a permis de cibler comme flux d’intérêt les particules de dimension supérieure à 0,038mm dans le concentré de carbonates et les rejets du circuit de flottation du pyrochlore. La méthode utilisée pour valoriser les phosphates est la flottation. Les meilleurs résultats ont été obtenus par flottation directe des minéraux de phosphate du concentré de carbonates dans les rejets de Niobec. Le collecteur utilisé est un acide gras de type AERO 6493 avec un mélange d’amidon de tapioca et de NaOH utilisé comme déprimant pour les carbonates. Ces conditions ont permis de produire un concentré d’apatite titrant entre 30 à 32 % P2O5 avec un rendement de 50 à 60% du P2O5 contenue dans le concentré de carbonates. La teneur en MgO dans le concentré d’apatite est comprise entre 3 et 4% comparativement à 15% dans l’alimentation. Puisque le MgO est principalement associé à la dolomie ces résultats confirment une bonne dépression de ce minéral lors de la flottation de l’apatite du concentré de carbonates. La flottation de l’apatite à partir des rejets du pyrochlore n’a pas permis d’obtenir un concentré de valeur commerciale. Le meilleur résultat obtenu lors des essais de flottation sur les rejets pyrochlore correspond à une teneur de 14%avec un rendement de 53% P2O5. Les résultats obtenus montrent toutefois le potentiel associé à la récupération des minéraux de phosphates et justifient la poursuite des travaux, cette fois, moins exploratoires que les travaux rapportés dans ce mémoire.
