Clay-containing nanocomposites of polystyrene-b-poly(ethylene-co-butylene)-b-polystyrene (SEBS) copolymers having cylindrical domains were obtained by melt extrusion using a tape die. One type of sample (SEBS-MA) had maleic anhydride attached to the middle block. Two types of organoclays were added, namely Cloisite 20A and Cloisite 30B. Small angle X-ray scattering and transmission electron microscopy (TEM) analyses showed that the addition of 20A clay to SEBS and SEBS-MA resulted in nanocomposites with intercalated and partially exfoliated structures, respectively. The addition of 30B clay to SEBS and SEBS-MA promoted the formation of composites containing relatively large micron-sized and partially exfoliated clay particles, respectively. Our TEM analysis revealed that clay particles embedded in SEBS are preferably in contact with the polystyrene cylindrical domains, while in SEBS-MA they are in contact with the maleated matrix. The extrusion processing promoted alignment of the axes of the polystyrene cylinders along the extrusion direction in all samples, and the basal planes of the clay particles were mostly parallel to the main external surfaces of the extruded tapes. © 2013 Society of Chemical Industry.

For the last few decades, the interest in functional nanomaterials is steadily increasing. Especially, in biomedicine the range of possible applications of multifunctional nanoparticles including dye-labeled makers and drug loaded carrier systems is extraordinary large. The incorporation of magnetic nanoparticles allows for an additional magnetic detection and manipulation. One promising system on the way to multifunctional nanomaterials is the polyorganosiloxane system. Via polycondensation of silan monomers in aqueous dispersion polyorganosiloxane nanoparticles with particle diameter between 10 and 150 nm can be synthesized. The versatile silane chemistry allows for the design of multifunctional network structures. In this work, hydrophilic iron oxide nanoparticles could be encapsulated into the polymeric particles in a highly efficient process whereat the superparamagnetic nature of the inorganic particles was restrained. The influence of different sized particles as well as the amount of the incorporated material was investigated. Using a core-shell architecture, controlled core and surface modifications could be achieved. An effective fluorescent labeling was performed via incorporation of dye-labeled monomers. Additionally, a hydrophilic surface modification was carried out via a grafting onto process of poly(ethylene glycol). Individual core and surface functionalization was achieved and the influence of the modification on the efficiency of the magnetic loading was tested. The applicability of the multifunctional particles in biological systems was proved via cellular uptake and toxicity testings. Furthermore, biofunctionalized particles were synthesized by EDC coupling using biotin and insulin.rnrn

In this communication, solid-state/melt extrusion (SSME) is introduced as a novel technique that combines solid-state shear pulverization (SSSP) and conventional twin screw extrusion (TSE) in a single extrusion system. The morphology and property enhancements in a model linear low-density polyethylene/organically modified clay nanocomposite sample fabricated via SSME were compared to those fabricated via SSSP and TSE. The results show that SSME is capable of exfoliating and dispersing the nanofillers similarly to SSSP, while achieving a desirable output rate and producing extrudate similar in form to that from TSE.

Organic-inorganic hybrid nanocomposites are widely studied and applied in broad areas because of their ability to combine the flexibility, low density of the organic materials with the hardness, strength, thermal stability, good optical and electronic properties of the inorganic materials. Polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) due to its excellent elasticity, transparency, and biocompatibility has been extensively employed as the organic host matrix for nanocomposites. For the inorganic component, titanium dioxide and barium titanate are broadly explored as they possess outstanding physical, optical and electronic properties. In our experiment, PDMS-TiO2 and PDMS-BaTiO3 hybrid nanocomposites were fabricated based on in-situ sol-gel technique. By changing the amount of metal precursors, transparent and homogeneous PDMS-TiO2 and PDMS-BaTiO3 hybrid films with various compositions were obtained. Two structural models of these two types of hybrids were stated and verified by the results of characterization. The structures of the hybrid films were examined by a conjunction of FTIR and FTRaman. The morphologies of the cross-sectional areas of the films were characterized by FESEM. An Ellipsometer and an automatic capacitance meter were utilized to evaluate the refractive index and dielectric constant of these composites respectively. A simultaneous DSC/TGA instrument was applied to measure the thermal properties. For PDMS-TiO2 hybrids, the higher the ratio of titanium precursor added, the higher the refractive index and the dielectric constant of the composites are. The highest values achieved of refractive index and dielectric constant were 1.74 and 15.5 respectively for sample PDMS-TiO2 (1-6). However, when the ratio of titanium precursor to PDMS was as high as 20 to 1, phase separation occurred as evidenced by SEM images, refractive index and dielectric constant decreased. For PDMS-BaTiO3 hybrids, with the increase of barium and titanium precursors in the system, the refractive index and dielectric constant of the composites increased. The highest value was attained in sample PDMS-BaTiO3 (1-6) with a refractive index of 1.6 and a dielectric constant of 12.2. However, phase separation appeared in SEM images for sample PDMS-BaTiO3 (1-8), the refractive index and dielectric constant reduced to lower values. Different compositions of PDMS-TiO2 and PDMS-BaTiO3 hybrid films were annealed at 60 °C and 100 °C, the influences on the refractive index, dielectric constant, and thermal properties were investigated.

Silicon has long been considered as one of the most promising anode material for lithium-ion batteries. However, the poor cycle life due to stress during charge/discharge cycling has been a major concern for its practical applications. In this report, novel Si-metal nanocomposites have been explored to accommodate the stress generated in the intercalation process. Several approaches have been studied with the aim of getting uniform mixing, good mechanical stability and high Si content. Among the three approaches being investigated, Si- Galinstan nanocomposite based on electrophoretic deposition showed the best promise by achieving at least 32.3% Si theoretical weight percentage, and our in current experiments we’ve already get 13% Silicon weight percentage, which gave us an anode material 46% more capacity than the current commercial product.

Indocyanine green (ICG) is a chemically labile compound which needs to be stabilized in aqueous media to be used in biomedical applications. In the present study, poly(ε-caprolactone) (PCL), a semi-crystalline polyester, was used to encapsulate and stabilize ICG in a hydrophobic environment. A hydrophobic and biocompatible nanocomposite was obtained by the process of encapsulating inorganic silica. ICG was embedded in the hydrophobic polymer coating by starting from a well-defined silica (Si) core of either 80 nm or 120 nm diameter, which served as a template for a ‘grafting from’ approach using ε-caprolactone. The obtained nanocomposite Si grafted PCL/ICG was based on silica nanoparticles grafted with PCL, in which ICG was adsorbed. The nanoparticles were characterized by IR spectroscopy, thermogravimetric analysis (TGA) and scanning electron microscopy (SEM). The change in the surface charge and the colloidal stability of the nanoparticles was followed by zeta potential measurements. This approach of synthesizing nanocomposite-based ICG demonstrates a new route to stabilize ICG. We synthesized biocompatible nanoparticles containing a high ICG concentration and exhibiting excellent stability to aqueous decomposition.

In layered silicate-epoxy nanocomposites organic modification of the silicates makes them compatible with the epoxy which intercalates into the clay galleries. The effect of clay dispersion on epoxies of high Tg is not clear. Decreases of the epoxy Tg have been frequently reported. The presence of clay may cause stoichiometry imbalances that conduces to the formation of imperfect networks

Environmentally friendly molybdenum disulfide (INT-MoS2) inorganic nanotubes were introduced into an isotactic polypropylene (iPP) polymer matrix to generate novel nanocomposite materials through an advantageous melt-processing route. The effects of INT-MoS2 content on the thermal, mechanical and tribological properties were investigated. The incorporation of INT-MoS2 generates notable performance enhancements through reinforcement effects, highly efficient nucleation activity and excellent lubricating ability in comparison with other nanoparticle fillers such as nanoclays, carbon nanotubes, silicon nitrides and halloysite nanotubes. It was shown that these INT-MoS2 nanocomposites can provide an effective balance between performance, cost effectiveness and processability, and should be of some interest in the area of multifunctional polymer nanocomposite materials.

Novel poly(phenylene sulphide) (PPS) nanocomposites reinforced with an aminated derivative (PPS-NH2) covalently attached to acid-treated single-walled carbon nanotubes (SWCNTs) were prepared via simple melt-blending technique. Their morphology, viscoelastic behaviour, electrical conductivity, mechanical and tribological properties were investigated. Scanning electron microscopy revealed that the grafting process was effective in uniformly dispersing the SWCNTs within the matrix. The storage and loss moduli as a function of frequency increased with the SWCNT content, tending to a plateau in the low-frequency regime. The electrical conductivity of the nanocomposites was considerably enhanced in the range 0.1?0.5 wt% SWCNTs; electrical and rheological percolation thresholds occurred at similar nanotube concentrations. Mechanical tests demonstrated that with only 1.0 wt% SWCNTs the Young's modulus and tensile strength of the matrix improved by 51 and 37%, respectively, without decrement in toughness, ascribed to a very efficient load transfer. A moderate decrease in the friction coefficient and a 75% reduction in wear rate were found for the abovementioned nanotube loading, indicating that PPS-NH2-g-SWCNTs are good tribological additives for thermoplastic polymers. Based on the promising results obtained in this work, it is expected that these nanofillers will be used to develop high-performance thermoplastic/CNT nanocomposites for structural applications.

High-temperature nanoindentation was used to reveal nano-layer size effects on the hardness of two-dimensional metallic nanocomposites. We report the existence of a critical layer thickness at which strength achieves optimal thermal stability. Transmission electron microscopy and theoretical bicrystal calculations show that this optimum arises due to a transition from thermally activated glide within the layers to dislocation transmission across the layers. We demonstrate experimentally that the atomic-scale properties of the interfaces profoundly affect this critical transition. The strong implications are that interfaces can be tuned to achieve an optimum in high temperature strength in layered nanocomposite structures.

Polymer/inorganic nanoparticle nanocomposites have garnered considerable academic and industrial interest over recent decades in the development of advanced materials for a wide range of applications. In this respect, the dispersion of so-called inorganic fullerene-like (IF) nanoparticles, e.g., tungsten disulfide (IF-WS2) or molybdenum disulfide (IF-MoS2), into polymeric matrices is emerging as a new strategy. The surprising properties of these layered metal dichalcogenides such as high impact resistance and superior tribological behavior, attributed to their nanoscale size and hollow quasi-spherical shape, open up a wide variety of opportunities for applications of these inorganic compounds. The present work presents a detailed overview on research in the area of IF-based polymer nanocomposites, with special emphasis on the use of IF-WS2 nanoparticles as environmentally friendly reinforcing fillers. The incorporation of IF particles has been shown to be efficient for improving thermal, mechanical and tribological properties of various thermoplastic polymers, such as polypropylene, nylon-6, poly(phenylene sulfide), poly(ether ether ketone), where nanocomposites were fabricated by simple melt-processing routes without the need for modifiers or surfactants. This new family of nanocomposites exhibits similar or enhanced performance when compared with nanocomposites that incorporate carbon nanotubes, carbon nanofibers or nanoclays, but are substantially more cost-effective, efficient and environmentally satisfactory. Most recently, innovative approaches have been described that exploit synergistic effects to produce new materials with enhanced properties, including the combined use of micro- and nanoparticles such as IF-WS2/nucleating agent or IF-WS2/carbon fiber, as well as dual nanoparticle systems such as SWCNT/IF-WS2 where each nanoparticle has different characteristics. The structure–property relationships of these nanocomposites are discussed and potential applications proposed ranging from medicine to the aerospace, automotive and electronics industries.
