In this work, the essential oils of S. officinalis, S. sclarea, S. lavandulifolia and S. triloba were chemically analyzed by gas chromatography coupled to a mass spectrometry detector (GC/MSD), and their antimicrobial activity was tested against 10 microorganisms using the disk diffusion method and the Minimum Inhibitory Concentration (MIC) technique. The following major compounds were identified in the essential oils: α - and β-thujone, camphor and 1,8-cineole, except in S. sclarea, where linalool, linalyl acetate and α-terpineol were the major constituents. The antimicrobial activity showed significant differences (p < 0.05) only when obtained by the MIC method. Gram-positive microorganisms presented larger sensitivity for the essential oils. The lowest MIC was observed when Staphylococcus aureus was exposed to 2.31 mg.mL-1 of S. lavandulifolia essential oil, while the highest MIC value was obtained when Shigella flexneri was exposed to 9.25 mg.mL-1 of the same essential oil, thus demonstrating that this essential oil may be effective as a bacteriostatic agent against Gram-positive microorganisms.

This study aimed to evaluate the use of rosemary (Rosmarinus officinalis) extract (RE), celery (Apium graveolis), and low levels of NO3 and NO2 as natural agents to enhance the quality of colonial salami. Salami was produced according to three treatments: (A) Control: 0.1% curing salt; (B) Rosemary: 0.05% curing salt + 0.5% RE (rosemary extract); and (C) Rosemary+celery: 0.14% Veg 503 + 0.27% Veg 504 (sea salt plus celery) + 0.5% of RE (rosemary extract). There was no effect (P > 0.05) of the treatments on water activity, Na content, and residual NO3 and NO2. Fatty acids C18:2 and C20:4 were reduced (P < 0.05) during the ripening period in the Control treatment indicating possible oxidation. The use of celery resulted in lower pH values (P < 0.05) in the salami. Reduced addition of NO3 and NO2 resulted in salami lighter in color (higher L* values, P < 0.05) at the 12th day of ripening. In conclusion, celery-based products proved to be an effective source of NO2 and NO3 for color development, but the low pH of the product indicates the need for better evaluation of its use in fermented salami. The RE (rosemary extract) reduced fat oxidation in salami, but this needs further evaluation.

Spray drying is an important method used by the food industry in the production of microencapsulated flavors to improve handling and dispersion properties. The objective of this study was to evaluate the influence of the process conditions on the properties of rosemary essential oil microencapsulated by spray drying using gum Arabic as encapsulant. The effects of the wall material concentration (10-30%), inlet air temperature (135-195 ºC), and feed flow rate (0.5-1.0 L.h-1) on the moisture content, hygroscopicity, wettability, solubility, bulk and tapped densities, particle density, flowability, and cohesiveness were evaluated using a 2³ central composite rotational experimental design. Moisture content, hygroscopicity and wettability were significantly affected by the three factors analyzed. Bulk density was positively influenced by the wall material concentration and negatively by the inlet air temperature. Particle density was influenced by the wall material concentration and the inlet air temperature variables, both in a negative manner. As for the solubility, tapped density, flowability, and cohesiveness, the models did not fit the data well. The results indicated that moderate wall material concentration (24%), low inlet air temperature (135 ºC), and moderate feed flow rate (0.7 L.h-1) are the best spray drying conditions.

O comércio de sementes de plantas medicinais encontra-se em ascensão, estimulado pelo crescente consumo de ervas, seja para o preparo de infusões, ou mesmo para o preparo de fármacos industrializados. No entanto, o consumidor dessas sementes normalmente encontra dificuldades para o cultivo destas espécies. Dentre os problemas por eles enfrentados, encontra-se a baixa densidade populacional, decorrente da utilização de sementes de baixa qualidade, ou por seguirem as informações expressas nas embalagens, as quais nem sempre conferem com a realidade. Considerando estas dificuldades, desenvolveu-se o presente trabalho, com a finalidade de avaliar a qualidade das sementes de cinco espécies de plantas medicinais, verificar a autenticidade das informações impressas nas embalagens para utilização doméstica, especialmente quanto a reprodutibilidade do teste germinação e a eficiência dos métodos indicados nas Regras para Análise de Sementes (RAS), adotadas no Brasil, para a superação da dormência. Sementes de anis (Pimpinella anisum L.), funcho (Foeniculum vulgare Mill.), losna (Artemisia absinthium L.), melissa (Melissa officinalis L.) e hortelã (Mentha piperita L.) foram submetidas a tratamentos para superação de dormência sugeridos pelas RAS, avaliando-se posteriormente, a germinação e emergência em casa de vegetação. Conclui-se que: a percentagem de germinação indicada nas embalagens domésticas superestima a qualidade de todas as espécies avaliadas; o pré-esfriamento é um método eficiente para a superação da dormência de sementes de melissa; o KNO3 é apropriado para a superar da dormência de sementes de hortelã; nas embalagens de sementes de espécies medicinais, deveriam constar informações adicionais quanto a possível existência de dormência nas sementes, bem como, o método adicional a ser empregado para superá-la.

A calêndula (Calendula officinalis L.) é uma planta com propriedades medicinais utilizada na produção de fitoterápicos e na indústria de cosméticos. A semente é insumo básico, devendo atender aos requisitos de qualidade fisiológica para garantir o estabelecimento de cultivos com alta produtividade. Para avaliar a eficiência de métodos que permitam separar lotes de sementes de calêndula em níveis de vigor, foram utilizados quatro lotes com diferentes origens e tempos de armazenamento. Os lotes foram avaliados qualitativamente pelos testes de germinação, teor de água das sementes, peso de matéria seca das sementes, peso de 1000 sementes, primeira contagem da germinação, emissão de raiz primária, condutividade elétrica, emergência de plântulas, índice de velocidade de emergência das plântulas, comprimento de plântulas, peso de matéria verde e seca de plântulas. Os testes de primeira contagem da germinação, emissão da raiz primária e índice de velocidade de emergência das plântulas permitem a separação dos lotes de sementes de calêndula em níveis de vigor. A combinação das informações fornecidas pela comparação de médias e pela análise de correlação entre diferentes testes de vigor e o teste de emergência em campo possibilita melhor avaliação da qualidade de sementes.

O tempo para germinação e emergência das plântulas de aspargo é relativamente longo, podendo levar de quatro a seis semanas, justificando o uso de técnicas que acelerem a germinação, como o condicionamento osmótico das sementes. Este trabalho teve por objetivo avaliar o efeito de diferentes tratamentos de condicionamento osmótico na germinação e no crescimento das plântulas de aspargo. Sementes de quatro lotes de aspargo 'Mary Washington' foram condicionadas em soluções de polietileno glicol (PEG 6000) a -1,0 e -1,2 MPa por sete e 14 dias, em água do mar a -3,3 MPa por sete e 14 dias e em água destilada por três dias. Sementes não condicionadas foram utilizadas como testemunha. O efeito dos tratamentos na qualidade fisiológica das sementes foi avaliado pelos testes de germinação e primeira contagem da germinação, velocidade de emergência das plântulas e comprimento da radícula, da plântula e do epicótilo. O experimento foi instalado no delineamento inteiramente casualizado, com quatro repetições e oito tratamentos. O condicionamento em PEG foi o tratamento mais adequado para promover a melhoria no desempenho das sementes. O condicionamento osmótico permitiu aumentar a germinação apenas das sementes de menor qualidade fisiológica. Efeitos benéficos do condicionamento osmótico foram mais expressivos na velocidade de emergência e no crescimento das plântulas, independentemente do nível de qualidade fisiológica das sementes.

Como o aspargo apresenta a germinação da semente e a emergência da plântula lentas, justifica-se o uso de técnicas que acelerem a germinação, como o condicionamento osmótico das sementes. Inicialmente, para definir as melhores condições de condicionamento das sementes, é necessário conhecer os padrões de embebição dessas sementes para se ter um controle adequado da hidratação. Assim, este trabalho teve como objetivo conhecer o padrão de embebição das sementes de aspargo com vistas ao seu condicionamento osmótico. Utilizaram-se quatro lotes de sementes de aspargo, cultivar Mary Washington, determinando-se as curvas de embebição das sementes, para cada lote, em água destilada, em PEG 6000 a -1,0MPa e -1,2MPa e em água do mar a -3,3MPa, em BOD a 25(0)C. Para tanto, determinou-se o grau de umidade das sementes após 2, 4, 6, 8, 10, 12, 24, 48, 72, 96, 120, 144, 168, 336, 504 e 672 horas de embebição em PEG 6000 a -1,0MPa e -1,2MPa e em água do mar a -3,3MPa. Para o condicionamento em água destilada, o grau de umidade das sementes foi determinado após 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9, 10, 11, 12, 24, 48, 72, 96, 120, 144 e 168 horas de embebição. Para a determinação do grau de umidade, adotou-se o método da estufa a 130(0)C/1 hora. Verificou-se que em água destilada houve rápida hidratação das sementes, com a protrusão da raíz primária a partir das 120 horas (5º dia) de embebição. No condicionamento em PEG 6000 a -1,0MPa, a partir das 504 horas (21 dias) de embebição, houve lento incremento no grau de umidade das sementes, iniciando-se a protrusão da raiz primária. Um controle eficiente da hidratação foi obtido nas sementes embebidas em PEG 6000 a -1,2MPa e em água do mar a -3,3MPa, onde não ocorreu protrusão da raiz primária até 672 horas (28 dias) de embebição.

Mangroves are specialised ecosystems developed along estuarine sea coasts and river mouths in tropical and subtropical regions of the world, mainly in the intertidal zone. Hence, the ecosystem and its biological components is under the influence of both marine and freshwater conditions and has developed a set of physiological adaptations to overcome problems of anoxia, salinity and frequent tidal inundations. This has led to the assemblage of a wide variety of plant and animal species of special adaptations suited to the ecosystem. The path of photosynthesis in mangroves is different from other glycophytes. There are modifications or alterations in other physiological processes such as carbohydrate metabolism or polyphenol synthesis. As they survive under extreme conditions of salinity, temperature, tides and anoxic soil conditions they may have chemical compounds, which protect them from these destructive elements. Mangroves are necessarily tolerant of high salt levels and have mechanisms to take up water despite strong osmotic potentials. Some also take up salts, but excrete them through specialised glands in the leaves. Others transfer salts into senescent leaves or store them in the bark or the wood. Still others simply become increasingly conservative in their water use as water salinity increases. A usual transportation or biosynthetic path as other plants cannot be expected in mangrove plants. In India, the states like West Bengal, Orissa, Andhra Pradesh, Tamil Nadu, Andaman and Nicobar Islands, Kerala, Goa, Maharashtra, and Gujarat occupy vast area of mangroves. Kerala has only 6 km2 total mangrove area with Rhizophora apiculata, Rhizophora mucronata, Bruguiera gymnorrhiza, Bruguiera cylindrica, Avicennia officinalis, Sonneratia caseolaris, Sonneratia apetala and Kandelia candal, as the important species present, most of which belong to the family Rhizophoraceae.Rhizophoraceae mangroves are ranked as “major elements of mangroves” as they give the real shape of this unique and interesting ecosystem and these mangrove species most productive and typical characteristic ecosystem of World renowned. It was found that the Rhizophoraceae mangrove extracts exhibit several bioactive properties. Various parts of these mangroves are used in ethnomedicinal practices. Even though extracts from these mangroves possess therapeutic activity against humans, animal and plant pathogens, the specific metabolites responsible for these bioactivities remains to be elucidated. Various parts of these mangroves are used in ethnomedicinal practices. There is a gap of information towards the chemistry of Rhizophoraceae mangroves from Kerala. Thorough phytochemical investigation can achieve the validity of ethnomedicines as well as apply the use of mangrove plants in the development of new drugs. Such studies can pave a firm base for their use in biomarker and chemotaxonomic studies as well as for the better management of the existing mangrove ecosystem. In this study, the various chemical parameters including minerals, biochemical components, bioactive and biomarker molecules were used to classify and assess the possible potentials of the mangrove plants of the true mangrove family Rhizophoraceae from Kochi.

The dispersal of plants within botanically rich grassland is an important area of study if such swards are to be maintained. The application of farmyard manure provides a possible mechanism by which seeds contained within hay can be returned/introduced to grasslands. In this study, hay, dung and manure samples taken from farms with botanically rich meadows contained very limited quantities of seeds of desirable species. Digestion by cattle, and storage within a manure heap for 6 months or longer, further reduced seed germination. Samples were characterized by an abundance of the grass, Poa trivialis, with few forbs present. Confirmation of the negative effect of the digestive processes of cattle on seed viability was achieved using an in vitro laboratory experiment. However, this experiment did show that the perennial herbs, Filipendula ulmaria and Sanguisorba officinalis, were able to survive digestion at least as well as P. trivialis. The burial of known quantities of seeds in a manure heap also showed these perennial herbs to be at least as resistant to damage as P. trivialis. The results demonstrate that, given appropriate timing of the hay cut, seeds of species with high conservation value could become incorporated into manure for subsequent dispersal. However, manure dispersal would appear to be of limited value for many species desirable from a conservation viewpoint.

The Euro-Mediterranean region is an important centre for the diversity of crop wild relatives. Crops, such as oats (Avena sativa), sugar beet (Beta vulgaris), apple (Malus domestica), annual meadow grass (Festuca pratensis), white clover (Trifolium repens), arnica (Arnica montana), asparagus (Asparagus officinalis), lettuce (Lactuca sativa), and sage (Salvia officinalis) etc., all have wild relatives in the region. The European Community funded project, PGR Forum (www.pgrforum.org) is building an online information system to provide access to crop wild relative data to a broad user community; including plant breeders, protected area managers, policy-makers, conservationists, taxonomists and the wider public. The system will include data on uses, geographical distribution, biology, population and habitat information, threats (including IUCN Red List assessments) and conservation actions. This information is vital for the continued sustainable utilisation and conservation of crop wild relatives. Two major databases have been utilised as the backbone to a Euro-Mediterranean crop wild relative catalogue, which forms the core of the information system: Euro+Med PlantBase (www.euromed.org.uk) and Mansfeld’s World Database of Agricultural and Horticultural Crops (http://mansfeld.ipk-gatersleben.de). By matching the genera found within the two databases, a preliminary list of crop wild relatives has been produced. Around 20,000 of the 30,000+ species listed in Euro+Med PlantBase can be considered crop wild relatives, i.e. those species found within the same genus as a crop. The list is currently being refined by implementing a priority ranking system based on the degree of relatedness of taxa to the associated crop.

The antioxidant capacity of some herbs used in dietology practice was determined by the DPPH free radical method, which was calibrated with ascorbic acid. Partially hydrophilic phenolic compounds are the most active compounds in plants, and therefore water was used as the extraction agent. Besides antioxidant capacity, the content of total phenolic compounds was also measured and a strong correlation between these two variables was found. The extracts of lemon balm (Melissa officinalis L.), peppermint (Mentha x piperita L.), oregano (Origanum vulgare L.), Greek oregano (Origanum heracleoticum L.), sage (Salvia officinalis L.) and winter savory (Satureja montana L.) showed very significant activity. It was comparable with the activity of green tea in the case of oregano and peppermint. Lower activity was observed in the case of rosemary (Rosmarinus officinalis L.), marjoram (Majorana hortensis), hyssop (Hyssopus officinalis L.), sweet basil (Ocimum basilicum), and lovage (Levisticum officinale Koch.). The inhibitory activity of the herb extracts was monitored also during the autooxidation of lard. Very high antioxidant capacity was observed mainly in sage samples, but also in marjoram and Greek oregano. The extracts of peppermint, oregano, rosemary, winter savory, lemon balm and hyssop showed middle activity comparable to that of alpha-tocopherol. The antioxidant capacity of sweet basil and lovage was insignificant.

Mediterranean species are popular landscape plants in the UK and well suited to the predicted climate change scenarios of hotter, drier summers. What is less clear is how these species will respond to the more unpredictable rainfall patterns also anticipated, where soil water-logging may become more prevalent, especially in urban environments where soil sealing can restrict drainage. Pot experiments on flooding of four Mediterranean species (Cistus × hybridus, Lavandula angustifolia ‘Munstead’, Salvia officinalis and Stachys byzantina) showed that the effects of waterlogging were only severe when the temperature was high and flooding prolonged. All plants survived the flooding in winter, but during the summer a 17-day flood resulted in the death of 30-40% of the Salvia officinalis and Cistus × hybridus. To examine the response of roots to oxygen deprivation over a range of conditions from total absence of oxygen (anoxia), low oxygen (hypoxia) and full aeration, rooted cuttings of Salvia officinalis were grown in a hydroponic-based system and mixtures of oxygen and nitrogen gases bubbled through the media. Anoxia was found to reduce root development dramatically. When the plants were subjected to a period of hypoxia they responded by increasing the production of lateral roots close to the surface thus enabling them to acclimate to subsequent anoxia. This greatly increased their chances of survival.

Within a changing climate, Mediterranean ‘Garrigue’ xerophytes are increasingly recommended as suitable urban landscape plants in north-west Europe, based on their capacity to tolerate high temperature and reduced water availability during summer. Such species, however, have a poor reputation for tolerating waterlogged soils; paradoxically a phenomenon that may also increase in north-west Europe due to predictions for both higher volumes of winter precipitation, and short, but intensive periods of summer rainfall. This study investigated flooding tolerance in four landscape ‘Garrigue’ species, Stachys byzantina, Cistus × hybridus, Lavandula angustifolia and Salvia officinalis. Despite evolving in a dry habitat, the four species tested proved remarkably resilient to flooding. All species survived 17 days flooding in winter, with Stachys and Lavandula also surviving equivalent flooding duration during summer. Photosynthesis and biomass production, however, were strongly inhibited by flooding although the most tolerant species, Stachys quickly restored its photosynthetic capacity on termination of flooding. Overall, survival rates were comparable to previous studies on other terrestrial (including wetland) species. Subsequent experiments using Salvia (a species we identified as ‘intermediate’ in tolerance) clearly demonstrated adaptations to waterlogging, e.g. acclimation against anoxia when pre-treated with hypoxia. Despite anecdotal information to the contrary, we found no evidence to suggest that these xerophytic species are particularly intolerant of waterlogging. Other climatic and biotic factors may restrict the viability and distribution of these species within the urban conurbations of north-west Europe, but we believe increased incidence of flooding per se should not preclude their consideration.

Different extraction processes were employed to extract the polyphenolic compounds from pitanga (Eugenia uniflora L) leaves: a one-step process using water, ethanol or supercritical CO(2) as solvents, and a two-step process using supercritical CO(2) followed by either water or ethanol. The total polyphenolic compounds, total flavonoids and antioxidant activity were determined in all the extracts obtained. The process performance was evaluated with respect to three variables: global extraction yield, concentration and yield of both polyphenols and flavonoids in the extracts. For the one-step extraction, the results showed that the extraction yield increased with solvent polarity. For the two-step process, the results suggested that water was more efficient in extracting the phenolic compounds from E. uniflora when the matrix was previously extracted with scCO(2). With respect to the antioxidant activity, the ethanolic extracts obtained from both processes, using either the DPPH radical scavenging method or the beta-carotene bleaching method, presented high antioxidant activities. Os objetivos deste trabalho foram: fazer um levantamento das dez espécies vegetais que compõem o maior número de apresentações farmacêuticas de fitoterápicos simples registradas na ANVISA; realizar o diagnóstico da oferta e da qualidade das informações contidas nas bulas das apresentações contendo as cinco espécies vegetais mais utilizadas; e definir as informações técnicas que devem estar contidas na bula de especialidades farmacêuticas que contenham como ingredientes ativos unicamente extratos preparados a partir destas espécies. O levantamento das dez espécies vegetais abrangeu o período de 01/01/1998 a 30/06/2003 e foi realizado através de consulta ao OPTLINE (www.i-helps.com). Os medicamentos fitoterápicos representam 7,76% (1888) das apresentações de registro de medicamentos no Brasil, sendo 1311 (5,38 %) apresentações de medicamentos fitoterápicos simples. Cinqüenta e oito espécies vegetais constituíam os registros de medicamentos fitoterápicos simples, sendo as dez com maior número de apresentações Ginkgo biloba L.: 302 (23,04%); Hypericum perforatum L.: 126 (9,61%); Piper methysticum F.: 87 (6,64%); Cimicifuga racemosa Nutt: 79 (6,03%); Valeriana officinalis L.: 76 (5,80%); Vitis vinifera L.: 69 (5,26%); Echinacea purpurea L.: 58 (4,42%); Aesculus hippocastanum L.: 53 (4,04%); Panax ginseng C. A Mayer: 48 (3,66%) e Cynara scolymus L.: 31 (2,36%). O diagnóstico da oferta e da qualidade das informações contidas nos textos das bulas foi realizado comparando-se estas informações com aquelas apresentadas na base de dados Medline (PubMed - www.ncbi.nhm.nhi.gov) dos últimos 5 anos e em obras bibliográficas de referência aceitas pela ANVISA, além de outras, clássicas na área de farmacognosia e fitoterapia . Foram avaliadas vinte e oito bulas. As informações de todas as bulas apresentavam incompatibilidades com as informações da literatura consultada. Os problemas mais freqüentemente encontrados foram relativos à sinonímia popular, eficácia, via de administração, contra-indicações, uso em idosos, crianças e grupos de risco, reações adversas e interações medicamentosas. Para cada uma das cinco espécies mais citadas, as informações científicas e técnicas compiladas foram organizadas como uma proposta de bula para o Profissional de Saúde a ser incluída no Compêndio de Bulas de Medicamentos (CBM), conforme previsto na Resolução-RDC nº 140/03, o qual consiste em um conjunto de bulas de medicamentos comercializados, editado pelo órgão regulador e com conteúdo da bula para o paciente e da bula para o profissional de saúde.
